Default STEAM HEARTS Saturn vs PCE (warning- mild adult content)

    Hello, all...

Can anyone give me some in-depth info on the differances between the original PC-Engine game and the Saturn version of Steam Hearts? I've got the Saturn game and I just finished it (cheat codes... it's a hard shooter!) I understand the Saturn version was censored compared to the PC-Engine game. What parts were censored? Any PC-Engine fans with the knowledge? What is the plot? What the hell are these characters talking about? I've been Googling and have so far come up short.

For those of you who don't know, Steam Hearts is a traditional 2-D horizontal shooter like Xevious or Raiden that first appeared on the PC-Engine and was later ported to the Saturn. It's very hard but fairly short and really not that great.

It's claim to (limited) fame are the hentai cutscenes that appear between each boss battle. The game goes something like this...

Your characters (I believe the two are together and comprise the "Steam Hearts") are a male and a catlike female. They are the two in front/center. The chick with the white hair on the bottom is the final boss and much hotter (in an anime-way) than the cover would lead you to believe...

You fight in traditional shooter style until you reach the boss, which I assume is a mech ship manned by a female character. Upon defeating her, the Steam Hearts get to have sex with the boss character (the other females shown on the cover.)

You generally get to watch three or four still cutscenes (no movement) featuring some light lesbian imagery, some bondage, and some implied rape. There's a lot of moaning and howling (this is true of what little hentai I've seen.) There's a lot of Japanese spoken during these scenes, and I have no clue as to what's going on. There's some sound effects of an ocean wave breaking (this is accompanied by the moans of the boss character, whom I assume is having an orgasm) and then followed by the last scene where she is looking either 1) satisfied or 2) embarrassed and blushing yet still satisfied. The male character is never shown doing anything sexual... just the female. He might just stand there and watch.

Here's the back cover... I couldn't get it to display do I just linked to it. It shows one shooter scene and two cut scenes.

This stuff isn't really raunchy... there's some stuff you'd see in any Sports Illustrated, plus a few bare boobs (with no nipples, at least in the Saturn version.) The other scenes are PG-13 rated or possibly soft R for the bondage/suggested rape (the boss character seems to dislike the bondage/rape yet has a fine time anyway and ends up finishing with a yowling orgasm... is this true of most hentai?)

And NO I'm not a pervert (not a big one, anyway ) but the idea of a shooter combined with some light bondage sounded great until I actually played it. The shooter part is only mediocre, and the cutscenes are LONG and full of screeching dialogue. Was the PC engine game any better? What was cut???

    Cheers

I think the Saturn version is suppose to be harder than the PC Engine version assuming your playing the same skill level. I think both vesions are kind of censored compared to the original PC version.

There was a PC version? I hadn't heard of that one. I HAD heard the Saturn game was an edited version of the PCE game. Have you played any of the three games Azazel? Insights on any of them?

    Thanks

Usually between $60 and $80... it doesn't come up for auction much and the online shops charge a lot for it.

The net provides no mention of a PC version, though many Japanese PC games are very hard to find, so that's not surprising.

I've found several instances where the Saturn game is described as an edited version of the PCE game, especially regarding the hentai scenes.

    Perhaps JapanGaming knows...

Only played the PC Engine and Saturn ones. The only real major differences I remember was the saturn version was harder and it's graphics were a little better obviously. I only played the first 2 or 3 levels and didn't have either of them at the same time so I can't do comparisons. Also the PC Engine goes for almost twice as much as the Saturn one does. Yes there was a PC version but I forgot which PC system it was on now.

I'd love to see the PC game! Is it true that a lot of Japanese PC software won't run on our computers? I read that on wolfgames or something.

The Saturn version is certainly quite hard. There's NO WAY I'd beat it without a cheat. The graphics are decent, but it has A LOT of slowdown. Loads. Just crawls at times. Anyone who has seen Batsugun or Battle Garrega in action knows the Saturn can throw around multiple objects like nobody's business, so this port is not only edited, bit its also fairly slack.

    Still cool, though.

    Cheers

after clearing the stage you go to the main(?) part but the screen kind of faded into black and just sound before it's over. PC Engine version shows you more stuff in this regard...

don't expect any hentai stuff though... you need underground unofficial PC Engine release titles for that...

I paid equivalent to $43 for my SS SH and $70 for PCE SH last year and early this year on my trip to Japan...

    cheers

Don't know about most but sounds like GIGA's style. TGL being their more family friendly branch.
