Default Favourite Weapons in an FPS

Here are a some of my favourites:

The Reaper from Perfect Dark, nothing like cutting down your enemies if you know what I mean. The Needler from Halo 2, just a great all round weapon much improved over its Halo counterpart. The Chainsaw from DOOM, just nice and evil. The Gravity Gun from Half-Life 2 which is just a cool weapon. The Farsight from Perfect Dark, good for killing things through walls. The RC-P120 from Perfect Dark or the RC-P90 from Goldeney and the Golden Gun. And of course the BFG-9000 can't be without that ridiculously awesome gun.
Why don't you go play in the other room. Why don't you BURN IN HELL!! - Stewie.

    Timesplitters3: Harpoooon gun!
I'm a big fan of ammo that 'sticks' in things.
And what's better is that, when you miss,
you can pick up the ammo and reload it!
    Fantastic!

Well, pretty much the cast of weapons from RotT, one of the things the game has going for it That would be - the Drunk and Split missiles, and the special weapons were good too (God Mode, dyslexic Dog Mode, the Excallibat, and other things). Also, the regular pistols are nice, though you lose a bonus (not to mention the BONUS BONUS!) if you use them.

Unreal Tournament 2K4...well, Ion Painter and such are great; the flak cannon, the link gun, and the classic sniper rifle.

Quake III had a nice selection of weapons indeed, but it's been so long...I somewhat remember what the machine gun looked like. Man, visiting the official iD site back in the day, just to wait a minute while their pages of new screenshots loaded...that was awesome. So much more advanced than anything I'd seen before (that was the game that, in my view, really broke the barrier towards realistic looking levels).

Half-Life/HL^2...I've always liked the selection of weapons here. Awesome looking rocket launcher, too.

Aliens vs. Predator (original for PC) - VERY nice selection of weapons; the regular assault rifle was good, the grenades made it better. The Smart Gun? Hell yes. The flamethrower was alright And the minigun...gamer's dream come true, with green alien goo splashing all about the place

Turok 2 - The shotgun packs one hell of a punch, in terms of its audio impact. Very nice.

Team Fortress Classic - again, the minigun. Love that thing, unless I'm on the recieving end. Like all the other weapons, cheesy but lovable.

Holy Wars Half-Life: Ah, here's a mod I'd like to see picked up again (and the classic "Sinners vs. Saints" gameplay type put back in), though the team was siphoned off for Deathmatch Classic. Right, this was an awesome mod and the weapons were even crazier: a rocket launcher with barrels that swiveled around, a minigun that had two SETS of barrels firing at once, and a triple barrelled shotgun (all straight across). My favorite, though, would be the railgun that dings at you when it's finished its firing cycle and is ready to be fired again

Poke 646 - another Half-Life mod; I liked the pipe bombs and nail guns.

Yeah, I'm heading further and further back into the past here...

Duke Nukem 3D invented the pipe bomb/FPS combo, but I've really always liked the RPG. Humorously enough, it was even bigger in the alphas (taking up nearly 1/3 of the screen)! The ripper cannon and shotgun were great, though I wasn't really too impressed with the freezing/shrinking guns.

    DOOM: Yeah...classic lineup here.

Heretic II: I loved the weapons from the original, but they were even better in the (sadly, unplayable under Windows XP) sequel.

Deus Ex: The sniper rifle..hmm...never did get that far into this one.

System Shock 2: Anybody can tell you that the triple barreled shotgun hauls. In a game like this where every weapon owned is equivalent to three item slots lost, though, the assault rifle becomes even more important (especially given that it is decidedly more powerful than the neat-looking pistol). Fusion cannon was alright, but slow. The melee weapons (wrench, laser rapier, crystal shard, and even the PSI Sword) remain among my favorites, though. No ammo required, and as the guys I SS2'd with (Calthaer and SoulBlazer...others too I think?) can tell you, Ed loves putting the smack down on mutants and cyborg ninjas.

Right, here's one that's not quite as well known (saw it at an area Goodwill, too, amazing!) - CyClones, by Raven/SSI. Very interesting targeting system (somewhat like Operation Flashpoint, and this was one of the FIRST FPS games with mouse control...actually, maybe THE first, though you couldn't use the mouse to change your facing easily), and many of the weapons were awesome - it's been a while since I played it, though.

Elite Force series - A bummer that Raven stopped making fantasy FPS games, but their first entry in the series fulfilled some FPS/Star Trek fans' wildest wet dreams (well...I'm sure not their WILDEST, but you know) in letting people use a fed phaser. Other good weapons to be had. The last iteration was apparently handled by Ritual, so...still good, though.

Soldier of Fortune II: Running under the Quake III engine, this one has some great looking levels and awesome weaponry - I've been meaning to buy it recently.

Counter-Strike: Source/Regular: The selection of guns here IS awesome.

Goldeneye: The first console FPS that really hooked me, and to this day one of the games I've spent the most time with. Love the Magnum, and even the silly Spyder/Klobb, but the Phantom was the coolest weapon when I first heard/saw it in action - that said, good ol' Dual RCP-90s do wonders. Probably the game that single-handedly introduced a generation to the P90 submachine gun. The game's also notable for having so many one-off items/weapons, such as the Watch Laser (useful for killing, too!)

Nod here to Splinter Cell - using that sniper rifle is quite a task!

Halo/Halo 2...hmm, the funny thing here is that nothing really strikes me as being incredibly awesome...strange.

Something also should be said for vehicles (especially as seen in the Battlefield series, but also in Half-Life/HL^2, and UT2K4).

    Of course there's more, but

Right...so the best one, for me? Half-Life^2's gravity gun, by far. It makes the game infinitely more versatile and makes your environment much more interesting.

    Haven't tried Perfect Dark yet...

ive always been partial to the railgun in quake 2 and 3. not only does it look cool, but it requires lots of finesse to be effective

Ahhhh...good times, Ed, good times in SS2 multiplayer. I have to say I like the Fusion Cannon in that, because it is just so awesome to go BOOM and lay waste to things. We never did finish that game I believe.

But my favorites go out to:
-"Goop" gun and 8-ball ("stick of six fires") from original Unreal. That razor gun (#7) was also cool when you shredded a head off with it.

-Most, if not all, of the alien weapons from Half Life: Natural Selection. Xenocide is just plain awesome (esp. with cloaking), and I love laying down fields of gas (Spore + Umbra). It's also fun to swallow marines whole as an Onos.
You are startled by a grim snarl. Before you, you see 1 Red dragon. Will your stalwart band choose to (F)ight or (R)un?

Rise of the Triad has had the best assortment of weapons in my opinion. Those missiles just ruled. And a flame thrower... wow. way ahead of its time. Also, Perfect Dark really impressed me with the quantity of weapons available. But as for the best weapon ever? Come on.. Chainsaw from Doom. Hands Down.

Original UT sniper rifle. Holy shit i used to be awesome with that thing, just run aruond deck 17 headshotting left and right without even using the damn zoom. Too bad they are replaced / suck ever since. then again if *I* was good with them maybe they were unbalaced.

    Default hmm

grenades, because i'm such a lousy shot with guns. i'm also pretty shitty with the halo 2 sword -never taps the trigger hard enough to get the stab instead of swipe, and has horrible timing-

Nope...got darn close, though. I had to uninstall it just a week ago as the graphics were glitching up badly on me, though (i.e. seeing polygons through walls, and lots of tearing in general) - plus I tried to set up a SS2 game with somebody else, only to have my hopes dashed by the router :p

Anyhow...back to the topic at hand. Yes, I've often regretted having passed up Blood and Shadow Warrior, even though I've known of them for at least eight years...I'll change that soon enough. Those probably kick the living daylights out of RotT, but I've never gotten around to playing them. I hear that a lighter is a very useful item!

Speaking of grenades...the Goldeneye grenade launchers were awesome.

Also, I just have to say that I'm a complete Half-Life (yes, even original) weapons nut. It's not so much what the weapon DOES as it is about simply seeing a new one, figuring out its characteristics, listening to it go "bang," you see. This is one of the reasons I've supported (well, as much as a fan does) the Brainbread mod in all their insanity such as making a sawn-off shotgun pinpoint accurate, more so than a pump (that mod also happens to have the best-looking minigun I've seen to date in a Half-Life mod, and I daresay it looks much better than those featured in many later games, i.e. UT2K4).

The tech bow from Turok, loaded with the poison arrows is my all time favorite.

    I also love nail guns.

And there's FAR too many PSO weapons to mention.....but I love the Spread Needle and Heaven's Punisher....especially for the people who pipe to town.

Thats why I love Resident Evil 4's Mine Thrower! I just wish you could detonate the mine with a bullet you fired in slow-motion whilst diving for cover. Amen to that thought.
