I tinker around with video game repair from time to time and I just encountered a problem I haven't seen before. This PS2 will only play one certain game and all the rest I try will not work on it (even DVDs). Any ideas on a cause and a fix?

some more info would be helpful
like what version of the unit
is it chipped? what chip if yes
what game do work
any other ordinary things like been an old chip etc..
Broken? fix it.
I can't recall the version, but I know the power/reset button are connected by a mass of wires and not one of those flat ribbons that are too short (thank god). And as far as I can tell its not chipped, I didn't think to look while it was open. And the only game that works is Simpson's Road Rage. I can find this stuff out later.

It's a V.1 or V.2. that's out of 11 versions.
Try cleaning the laser. If that doesn't do it, it's trash IMO. I don't even buy those for parts anymore. I won't sell v.1 or V.2's.

Its a very strange build, too compact to put a chip in it seems. I cleaned the laser and I adjusted the height to about every possible elevation. So I guess its scrap parts now.
You are correct, its a V2. 10 screw model.

I have a broken PS2. I thought it was a version 1, but it does NOT have a mass of wires to the power/eject buttons. It has a ribbon cable. 10 screws. Is that still a version 1?

Nope. It's a 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or an 8.

or even a 9 10 11 12 or 13
cause they all have ribbon cables (even the slim ones)
and yes even 9-10 but the buttons are molded to the CD-ROM assembly
Broken? fix it.
Is there any reliable guide that tells how to find out what version you have? The sites I checked all said that 10 screw versions (like mine) were either 1, 2, or 3. Its broke and Id like to get a better idea of whether its worth it to fix.

depending on the someone's fix point components you can read out what version.(not sure about this one)
of course this applys to pal units as i dont know much about US units
oh and you can read out the version from looking at the PCB also.. but its more of a hustle if you arent used to the different version.

Hey Mr. Kitt! Even PSP's have ribbon cables, but I don't think that makes them a PS2.
