I liked that article alot. I was most suprised by the fact that you can play in ANY part of the game basicaly, and also being able to play as the master hand and giga bowser.

Just so you know, I write for N-Philes, and the guy who did that article is great and really put a lot of time into that article. Cool to see people are apprecitating it.

I find this sort of debug code fascinating. I'd love to know where that background tavern photo came from. Excellent article and thanks a million for the link!

Not bad, but "Clearly the deepest fighting game ever" inserted throughout the entire article over and over is really ridiculous. Not only is it NOT considered the "deepest fighting game ever" saying it that many times puts so much fanboism into the article it detracts from the entire thing IMO.

    Pretty interesting.
I've always wanted to enter a Melee or a Super Smash Bros. cometition somewhere just to see how good I really was. Like everybody else, I think I'm the best.

You bring up a good point. Like Madden and Tetris, everybody thinks they are awesome at SSBM. I think thats a sign of great game design.

my friend used my cube to work on these very codes, he was one of the main code makers for the pal game. so this is old news to me, we were the first people to use this menu on a pla game outside nintendo's walls.. i feel special:P

that guy doesnt really know what he's talking about in half of that article, 150 hours is nothing for a smash player.. we have over a thousand hours versus time on my game.. plus his explainations of many things in the menus is bs, plus he makes it sound really easy to use.. it's not, we wrote up a document via trial and error just to be able to work the thing without freezing the cube.. versus matches are easy with all the exta crap, but the other stuff is the difficult stuff.
theres another such menu devoted to sound tests, like the small one in the debug menu, but it has more in it.. ALOT more.. theres a bunch of sounds and music not in the actual game, including what sounds like a 'history of nintendo' style video clip, starts with 8 bit sounds and works its way up.. theres also pokemon noises which arent in the game and stuff like that..
    anyway, it's late.. 'night

I don't know if it's the DEEPEST, but it's pretty damn deep. There's a lot of character specific things to know, tricks upon tricks each individual character can do to help them win, level specifics, ridiculous customization, and the fact that it's held up for almost 4 years now as the most popular fighting game in the US(look at the turnout for all the tournaments that get held for it!), as well the first fighter in a long while that did the SF2 thing of bringing in casual players...

It's no VF4, but it's far more accessible, and still better than dreck like Soul Calibur 2. or Capcom Fighting Evolution.

Oh yeah, what the hell does Ditto do?

Supposedly, if you got a Ditto out of a Pokeball, it would copy your fighter and fight your opponents aside you. Apparently, it was taken out late in the game, most likely due to programming problem. Ditto is actually mentioned as an Item Pokemon in the official Nintendo guide for the game, which shows you that it was in there until the very last minute.

I personally thought SC2 was the best fighting game I've ever witnessed.

Here's the problem with SC2, and the inherent difference between it and say, Smash Bros, or Marvel 2.

Whereas all three games catered to the casual fighting game player, the latter two stood up, more or less, to the hardcore players, having enough depth and character balance(well, marvel 2 had SOME), to keep things interesting.

Soul Calibur 2 on the other hand, was a very boring game once you started tourney playing. It's a very defensive game that seems to be built largely around sidestepping attacks and punishing the offensive movemaker. This says to me bad game design, similar to Capcom vs SNK 2.

This is why I'll never be able to call Soul Calibur 2 a good fighting game. A fun game, sure, but hell, even KOF Maximum Impact or Mortal Kombat are fun.

I've witnessed experienced players in SCII get whooped by children as young as 5-6 years old. I can safely say that the same situation would never happen in SSBM. It goes to show that the SC series is a failed attempt at pseudo-strategy by a means of button mashing, IMO. I enjoyed the original Soul Calibur much better on the Dreamcast, but overall I find the series to be very boring.

Now the Super Smash Bros. games are among my favorite in the fighting genre. I'd definitely say SSBM is up there in terms of depth compared to VF4.

I didn't find Virtua Fighter 4 to be all that deep, and Soul Calibur 2's about as shallow as they come. SSBM may not be the deepest fighting game ever (Tobal No. 2, perhaps?) but it's pretty damn deep.

As far as the debug menu goes, anyone figure out a way to turn off the bombs that fall during sudden death, or environmental hazards like the ships in the Starfox level or the cars in the Earthbound level? Those are the main obstacles that can really ruin any fair fight in SSBM. I can't believe Nintendo didn't include an option to turn them off. There's nothing worse than a tense sudden death match, dodging and countering each other perfectly, only to have a bomb drop out of the sky and steal any satisfaction of victory from the winner. If I could turn those off, I'd buy a Pro Aciton Replay tomorrow, expressly for that purpose.

Also, SSBM shows that Nintendo STILL can't code a good "difficult" AI without cheating. Just like in Super Mario Kart, try playing All-star on Very Hard and watch the coms cheat away. ...sigh...

We have a couple thousand hours worth of VS. time racked up on my copy....kind of embarassing when I really think about it.
