Supergrafx Games...how many? what are they?

Hi Folks,

I've heard conflicting stories on this. I've heard 5 games, I've heard 6. Joe mentioned he didn't consider Darius Alpha one of them (could you explain, Joe?) And what the hell ever happenned to Strider? Anyone found a proto? They must be out there....I think some mags might have reviewed it even.

There's also a ton of info about the SuperGrafx and various PC Engine versions in our book, which I'm quite sure you own. Check out the hardware section and all will become clear =)

The answer is 5 or 7 depending on how you want to look at it. Five games were made specifically for the Supergrafx:

1941: Counter Attack
Aldynes
Battle Ace
Ghouls n Ghosts
Granzort

There were also two games that took advantage of the Supergrafx system, but also played on a regular PC Engine:

Darius Plus
Darius Alpha

If you're getting confused after reading the DP list, he means Diamakaimura. The SuperGrafx is a Japanese system, and Daimakaimura is the Japanese name (actually the original name) of Ghouls n Ghosts.

Is the SuperGrafx fully emulated by Magic Engine, other emus? NEC is sitting on a mountain of TG games they could've released as classic collections, emulated on modern consoles. I wonder why they don't.

Ok, cool. I knew there were at least 5. How do the Dariuses take advantage of the Supergrafx? Were some graphics more detailed (a lot of them or just a negligible amount?)?

And what about Strider?

Oh, and Joe, I checked the guide first, but not the onlne lists...didn't see it in the book.

Are we talking Strider for Supergrafx? Doesn't exist unless it's a proto, I guarantee it. There is a pretty damned rare one for the Duo CD system that's aracade card compatible though.

I believe it adds an extra layer of scrolling and reduces the flicker (due to it being able to handle more sprites). Nothing too interesting.

That IS the one they're talking about, but there HAS been a rumor that a prototype exists. There's also a rumor that the reason it wasn't released is because the programmer committed suicide about 70% into the project. I don't if either is true, but it surely wasn't released.

Magic Engine has full Super Grafx support. The games run perfectly on it. Woohoo!

Ok, I know this is an ancient thread, but the topic came up on another site. I was hoping to find out Tempest and Slapdash's sources for the suicide and nervous breakdown rumors. It's all urban legend at this point, and it would be cool to find out something more definitive. Does anyone have anything on this topic?

A bit of an off-topic question but: is Granzort based on the Anime by the same name? Does anyone know where can I find info about it?

Yes Granzort is based on Anime of the same name.
It's a nice platformer where you can switch your robot between the 3 ones of the anime.
