The only one I'm really looking forward to is Konami's Suikoden III. I just checked out a beta yesteday and it's pretty sweet. It's due to hit America in November. The import version is out.
Kingdom Hearts is coming out in a month or two.

yeah. everyone is saying that Kingdom Hearts is gonna suck because disney is involved. They're all wrong!!! That game will KICK ASS!!!
Somebody once told me to get a life.
I told them I sold it for money to buy video games.
Kingdom Hearts just may be the single game I am looking forward to most right now.
Dark Cloud got good reviews and is cheap now too (I think it's about 20 bucks). There seem to be aa few that are just on the horizon, there's ".hack" and XenoSaga, Breath of Fire, etc.
KH has some great voice acting and I've seen some the great movies from it too.

Hasn't anyone played Shadow Hearts? That was a great RPG for the PS2
I have Shadow Hearts, and don't think much of it about 10 hours in. Not awful, but seems pretty average all-around.
really? I really got into Shadow hearts. Dug the story, liked the graphics and the gameplay. It wasn't DEEP or moving or powerful, but it was good.
I think the poor dialogue writing / characterizations and repetitive battles hurt it most for me. I dunno, maybe my standards are too high these days, but it seemed really unspecial. ;)
I have seen other Shadow Hearts fans out there, though, so you're not alone in liking it.
I like ShadowHearts too, even though its biggest weakness is the voice acting. For those unfamiliar with the game, it's a horror/gothic RPG in which you play a young man that has transforming powers that he gets from the beasts he kills. He protects a young woman who has powers of her own. In the meanwhile, he's being run after by a sinister and mysterious fellow who's out to get him. I particularly like the circle of decision (or whatever it's called) that's used to determine whether a particular action (such as opening a resisting door) is successful or not. It's also used in battle to determine whether you have hit the target or not. Only thing: its use could be better explained in the manual.
Regarding other RPGs for the PS2: don't forget that you have access to the PSX's game library as well. There's Lunar 1 and 2 (remakes of the Sega CD classics), the rest of the Final Fantasy series (7 to 9, plus FF Tactics; never mind FF Anthology and Chronicles unless they're really unexpensive), Ogre Battle/Ogre Tactics (good luck finding it!), unless tactical RPGs are not your cup of tea.
I'm surprised no one said Baldurs Gate?
Disney/Square's Kingdom Hearts looks and sounds cool. I pre-ordered it from amazon.com... unusual for me. NormallyI wait for the other people to try it first and give feedback. But I like Square's RPGs and Disney's animation, so I figure Iwill love this game!
BTW, here's a 15-hour playtest:

"Now here's the hard part. This game has so many awesome things I would love to talk about but they are things better left unsaid so as not to spoil. The fact that Disney has such a LARGE amount of characters in their evergrowing world is not ignored here, and any person of age will recognize at least some of the one's I've encountered thus far."

I bought Dark Cloud back when it was first released, and I can't give it a great recommendation. It was fun at first but after awhile I just wanted it to end. I actually loaned it to a friend before finishing it (he's still playing it).
I thought Baldur's Gate was fantastic, but it's not an RPG in the FF X sense in my eyes. If you like hack and slash gameplay though (with RPG elements thrown in) then I'd definitely recommend it.
Kindom Hearts is getting really good reviews. I'm seriously thinking of picking it up after I pick up FF X (I'm too big of an FF fan to skip that and go straight to KH).
I also tried Summoner back when it was first released and was underwhelmed by it. I pretty much go to my PSX when I'm in an RPG mood (it helps when you haven't played hardly any of them outside of FF - there's a lot of good stuff to choose from there).
Time will be when the broadest river dries
And the great cities wane and last descend
Into the dust, for all things have an end
