Default Poor Family: (Gameboy Edition) Games I was forced to love

As a teen I never had very much money. Instead of them going out to buy the SNES version of Mortal Kombat I was forced to trade in Wario Land GB for Mortal Kombat for the GB. I remember sitting on the floor behind my house with 2 friends looking at the small screen of the Gameboy trying to see my friends fight. Even though the characters did not have all their moves, there were only 6 players, the characters did not jump, there was no color, the sound sucked, the fight words were not said, it was slow as hell, it's fatalities sucked, and I did not have reptile I still adored it. It had it's faults, but it also had some good things, moves were easier to remember because of the 2 buttons, you could play as Goro and it was portable. One thing I will never forget is when I found the code to preform fatalities during fights with the game genie. Mortal Kombat on gameboy was my first "Mature Game".

I had it for GG, and it was surprisingly complete, even if it only had a couple of backgrounds.

For some reason, I've always had this fascination with 8bit fighters. Fatal Fury Special and bootleg SFII on GG were two of my most sought after games when I was a kid.

I always wanted to check out GB fighters, but I haven't come across any for cheap, and I haven't gotten into the GB emulation yet.

I have three comments to this:

    1.)

wow... that's kinda odd, since I traded in my copy of mortal kombat for a warioland cart just a few years back. weird...

2.) that game sucked major donkey balls (mk, I mean :P)

    3.)

    OMFG!!! WHAT IS IT?!?!?!

My friend bought the GG version of the game 2 months later and I fell in love with it as well. It's weird how the GB version had 3 backgrounds and the GG version only had 2. The GB version was missing Jonny Cage and the GG version was missing Kano. Good times.

I'm sorry I've already lost all my Game Genie Codes. However, I can tell you about it. During the game if you pressed foward and B your fighter would preform the fatality. However if you were not the right distance away from your apponent on the Scorpion one you would not be able to move any more and who ever had the least damage until that time would win.

, Just kidding about the SOB smiley. nothing worse than being a poor kid forced to play the dated/lame stuff :/ while the kids up the block play the good stuff at the time.

I remember still playing PONG while other kids were playing their atari 2600's and Intellivsions, dang those were tuff times as the 2600 was a major step over the pong unit.

Not that bad in these days though IMO, anything post 8bit, hell?! even alot of 8bit stuff has held the test of time, but I hear that! Stuck with a handhead vs a home console? WOAW!

Good post CMTZ, even if there's like three sentences in there. :P

Anyhow, for my part, the first Game Boy game I ever played was Terminator 2, the LJN one, on an original brick system. I thought it was pretty damn fun, and I'm getting nostalgic just thinking about it...rich(er) kid at some poor kid's house, playing on a Game Boy...er

Funny part is that I could go home and play the world's best port of Comix Zone on my PC, but that was gettin' stale by this point :P

Oh, and LJN's T2 game was pretty bad, I thought.

God...I have to add that to the Run'n Gun games section. Well, I'll make an extra section, for "EXTRA SHITTY GAMES."

Seriously, that damned tower puzzle. If you didn't shoot the towers in the right order, you died...inexplicably.

There are two Game Boy games that I swear are impossible to beat: Mickey's Dangerous Chase, and The Flinstones.

Also, that Game and Watch game was a little bastard because I turned it on once and it gave me a message along the lines of "You aren't good at this game, are you?". Little bastardass game, crushing a 12 year old's soul.
And don't bring up that stupid girlie Aladdin rip off! Shantea?

Someone showed it to me once in an import store, but I only got to see the character select and one background before the guy working there had to put it away and deal with another customer. This particular bootleg only had six characters and used backgrounds from other games, like SOR.
I couldn't afford it at the time, and I never saw one again.
I think there's a few other bootleg SFII games, though, because I played one for SMS that seemed different.

Haha, I indeed had this game as well.

I remember the programming be very off as well. For example even though I'm in the air, some how I could be hit with a punch attack.

Luckly I had a few more games than this like TMNT. I was also fortunate to have one of those special magnifying glasses over my screen to make it a little more bigger. I was hardcore about the gameboy for a while heh.
