So help me, if this is for real and it's doable, I'm snatching up an Xbox before Christmas.

But I have to know for sure before putting any more money in Bill Gates' bank account.

Its for real. You have to install a mod chip in the machine.

I don't wanna get banned from the board or anything cause I know mod chips are illegal and a touchy subject.

If Joe says it's OK, I'll post the details. :-)

I don't think Joe has a problem with mod chips.. I don't think anyone on this board has a problem with mod chips. Its when people start begging for PSX ISO'z! that people get pissy.

Many times you need a mod chip to play imports, which is the case for PS1, PS2, DC, Xbox, and i think GC but not sure on that.

At last estimate, Microsoft was losing over $100 per Xbox sold. Therefore, buy one if you want to take money from his bank account. Muhuahhahaha!

    You talked me into it.

Now someone tell me where to procure yonder chip, and I shall proceed to do exactly there.

You keep your clothes dryer right next to your stereo and television?

    Interesting.

, Yeah, well small apartment. It was that or take trips to the laundrymat every week. :-)

Of course I had to run power too it from another circuit. Or the breaker would go if you tried to dry clothes and listen to music :-)

    >I don't think Joe has a problem with mod chips.. I don't think anyone on this board has a problem with mod chips. Its when people start begging for PSX ISO'z! that people get pissy.

    Ok I hope not.....

    Here is how.....

I have the X-ecutor mod chip. It claims one wire, and thats true, but really it's a small board that you lay over a section of the xbox mother board. You place it over a spot where there "could" be a chip. There are solder points on the board is all. From there you have to fill several holes with solder. It's a pain in the ass. Then you run a single wire to an EXTREMELY small trace on the board. Another pain. However the worst pain of all, and its hard to describe but, the board is designed to but up against a screw and round metal pad on the board for ground. You have to solder the end to the round pad. It requires a lot of solder and hard to make a good ground connection. I wound up doing a butcher job with HOT solder gun to get it done. This after several attempts took me about 4 hours to get it all connected and working. :-( But, I did it......

Now this is the trick. You have to get software on the xbox hard disk to let you copy mame there. I will say you can play DVD-R copies without doing anything more.... but thats up 2 you. :-)

This is another pain in the ass. People say the xbox reads CD-RW. well mine doesnt, either does my brothers. And i wasnt about to open the dvd drive and adjust the gain of the laser. Luckily (this is very important) my brother has a DVD-RW drive and happened to have the Pinco DVD-R media that an xbox with a thompson drive likes. You boot from a DVD-R with a software call Evolution-X.

Note:with no DVD-RW drive, I would have been F'd at this point.

Evo-X turns your xbox into an FTP server. PLug your xbox into your home network and use FTP software to log in.

Another Note: You need a home network.

From there you rename the original xbox dashboard and replace it with evolution-x via FTP. (Evo-X let you run the original dashboard. no worries there, but you have to setup a menu file on your PC and upload it.)

No it's easy on your PC download xbox mame, make a folder on the Xbox E: partition, and copy it in along with your roms. Edit the menu file to make an option to run mame, and upload that.

Now reboot your xbox, choose mame from the menu and your off!!!
:-) No more time to type, if anyone has any questions please ask. :-)

I haven't read the entire post yet but I don't believe that you need any mod chip to play imports on the Dreamcast, just a boot CD

Wow~! That SOUNDS like a lot of trouble (espically seeing as how I don't have a DVD-RW or home network) so the importaint question to ask is it worth it? How does it run? What's the compatibility? I'm assuming if you're running Cadillacs and Dinosaurs you can run newer stuff without a hitch.

I've been really interested in this for a while, so I'm glad to finally hear from someone who is running it.

I'm no expert of the DC.. I just know you can't play an Import without modifying the DC either by software or hardware.. Both of which kill the proctections that would be considered an issue if anyone had one..

Well if its worth it depends on you. :-)

I just got done playing this. I spent many quarters and many hours at the local bowling alley with this game. Now I can sit in my living room and re-live it all. :-)

    l

That one and the Gaulntlets, Street Fighters, NeoGeo shooters.....for me it was worth the frustration.

Compatibilty? Well It's not as good as the computer one. I know it has a hard time with larger NeoGeo games like KOF98 and Metal Slug. I read there are NeoGeo version in the works to let you play the larger games.... So far with the roms I have, if the game runs, it plays WELL. It really does blow me away to play games like Tempest, Tapper and Super Pacman. I dont have much newer stuff, But Xmen and the street fighters run. :-) Hell since Mame.DK took the roms off line, i don't even know where to get them.

You dont really need a home network. All ya need is a network card in your PC and a crossover cable to run to the Xbox.

Also, You do need Evolution-X on DVD-R to get started. Maybe some one can do that for you.

Hey, I dont know where your from , but if your in NJ stop by and give it a try. :-)

    Default walmart

Is that the walmart chair your son is sitting on? If it is that thing rocks! Everytime I go to Wal Mart I think about getting it.

I'm in Indy, bit of a drive. Hell, I don't even have an xbox yet. I'm a big fan of MAME though, so I've been following this one. It's mostly the NeoGeo stuff I was really curious about, so you answered that question, thanks!
