Default UPDATE: xvid/divx support on 360 complete! **plz update w/ results, see inside**

    update:
guys it would be great if you could update how everything works and personal opinions of this. if a file doesnt work, tell us all of its encoding properties (video, audio, file type, resolution etc). if it does work tell us what it is, how its made and how it looks!.

lets see if we can compile some kind of informative resource on what types of files work and dont. maybe even cd/dvd type use and speed burned?

    current Q's:
anyone try axxo release of superbad?
anyone encode anything themselves yet to play for 360, what did you use/set up?

im at work so i havent updated/tested yet. but this is awesome as far as im concerned.

i do have a question, does this upconvert to 1080p or no? regardless this is pretty good news, pardon my ignorance but does ps3 play divx/xvid off of cdr/dvdrs?

Is streaming form a PC the only way to watch divx on the 360 or can it read from discs too? I usually stream vids from my Mac with Connect360 but I've got a ton of 700mb divx movies on cd-r that I'm wondering if they'll work.

I really hope these can play from disc...

Edit: Holy smokes, it does work. And the picture looks fantastic. Finally!

it works from any networked pc as well as any cdr, dvdr, usb thumbdrive, usb harddrive (like a WD passport) and pretty much anything else. windows media center not required.

hey so you tried it? does it upconvert to 1080p ?

Not that technically literate to be able to tell. So...How do I tell? I will say that the picture looks better than the one displayed from my old Philips DVP642.

Oh wow, I didn't even think about USB flash drives working on it. My Philips DVP5982 plays divx and even has a USB port for flash drives, but it's nice to know that the 360 will do it too.

Can the divx on X360 display subtitle (.srt) files though?

Wow, seems interesting. I'd love to use that for some fansubs of anime that never made it here.

Question though, can you zoom in and out when watching videos? Alot of fansubs i've seen are meant for PC screens so when I burn to a DVD I lose part of the subtitles.

It's very hit and miss with my files so far. Seems to play the old ones okay, but has problems with xvid. Won't even recognize them on the computer (using zune software to stream).

I get a lot of no working symbols on a bunch of my files.

    who knows.

I get the red circle with the slash through it, like the no symbol (no smoking, no ghosts etc) on a bunch of my divx's and xvids.

    Default hmmm...

It works well. I don't think there is any upconversion, and most vids seem to play in their encoded resolution and don't always fill the screen. Still looks good. Using your 360 with Media Center is superior...though I can't get it to work any more...

Ok, here's one for ya Poofta!:

I'm experiencing a problem with a few of my vid files. They're .avi's. Here's the average properties:

    Width: 640 px
    Height: 480 px

    Audio-

    Bitrate: 192kbps
    Format: MPEG Layer-3

    Video-

    Frame Rate: 29 frames/second
    Data Rate: 257kbps
    Video sample size: 24 bit
    Video compression: FFDS

Basically, the video starts stuttering after about 5-10 seconds of playing fine. After it starts stuttering, it stops playing completely and gives the following error:

Can't play this content because it may not be supported. For more info, go to www.xbox.com/support.

    Status code: 69:80070057
This seems to happen with some of the hi-res .avi files I have. Any ideas?

This is a general question, not specific to the avi thing, but what do you have to do in order to get the USB HD thing to work? I tried to connect a USB HD to my 360 awhile back (for mp3s) and got nowhere.

I did have success getting an avi to play, after first updating the firmware, then hitting "X" under the video menu to switch the source (took me a few minutes to realize what was going on before that).

After that I uploaded the avi/mpeg update and voila - I had an avi playing off of a CDR on my 360.

I have no experience with much else though. For me the fun is just seeing it work.

How does this compare to XBMC on the original Xbox? That is what I am using now and I like it quite a bit.

For files that work on both:
The 360 also handles HD content (up to 1080p) with ease while the Xbox is really only useful for videos with resolutions of up to 720 x 480 (with some exceptions).

Features like fast-forward, screen capture, volume control, and jumping are either non-existant or nowhere near as good with the Xbox 360 compared to XBMC.
