The 2.5d segments look kind of cool. I think they should put a bit more work into the game though. When hitting enemies against the wall with the board it looked cool, but then the one larger cocoon type enemy and some of the other enemies instantly disappeared after being killed when they were punched. The spikes coming out of Rick as well and not even coming close to the enemies but killing them all was a bit bad as well.
Another thing. Is the game a remake of 1, 2, and 3? The trailer makes it look like that. Makes sense why they'd use two types of gameplay.

Yeah pretty bad ass.
As far as the enemies just magically disappearing I doubt they do that in the final game.

Homage to the games play style... 1 and 2s sidescroll and 3s open movement beat 'em up. Triple bad ass! I don't blame them for completely omitting reference to the Famicom game though. Integrating that would be fairly difficult and jarring to a "WTF!" from those that don't know about it. Zombie Michael Jackson might be a little too soon and expensive. LOL
I just hope I can manage a slim 360 when they release it.

I don't blame them for completely omitting reference to the Famicom game though.
There still may be a reference or two that slips in. The team is paying attention to the complete history of the franchise (for an example of this, take a look at Mirror Rick's mask during the trailer, when Rick is fighting him - that's a deliberate homage there).

Do you mean how Mirror Rick turns purple the more you hit him? I don't notice any difference other than that in the first Splatterhouse.

Nope (and MR never changes color in the original game). Check out his mask:

Apparently, GameStop is now showing the release date as 11/23. I have yet to get a reply from Namco about this, though.

11/23 date confirmed by multiple sources, including Namco Bandai themselves at a GameStop managers meeting.
A new interview with Dan Tovar is up at ripten: Why Splatterhouse 2D Will Not Be Paid DLC in the 2010 Remake (http://www.ripten.com/2010/10/03/why-splatterhouse-2d-will-never-be-paid-dlc-in-2010-remake-getsome/)
DO: Now, while I think it’s awesome, how did you manage to include the original three games as unlockables when clearly you could have sold them as paid DLC on XBL and PSN? From a business standpoint, it doesn’t make sense and guys like Bobby Kotick definitely wouldn’t approve of this!
DT: Hah, yeah well as far as keeping the original games as freebies in the game, I literally had to fight for years to keep them from being paid downloadable content. I specifically wanted to do it as a big thank you and a nod to the fans of the original franchise who’ve been keeping it alive for the last 15 years. These guys are voracious, they’re amazing, they’ve been keeping websites active, and they even had a petition to get a modernized version of the game going. For 15 years they’ve been screaming from the mountaintops about how awesome this game is, so I wanted to be able to give them something back.

Techincally at least part of the original trilogy have already been offered as DLC at least on the VC though I do appreciate that they pushed the idea of making them all unlockable on the new game. I just wish it would get here already. Oh well I suppose its been 15 years what's another month

If one platform version of this game is obviously superior to the other, that will cinch a determination which of 360/PS3 I buy first (without that influence, I am leaning PS3. I want to wait for final reviews on this before I commit though). I haven't looked forward to playing a game this much in years... *drool*

The lack of backgrounds was a deliberate choice. Dan Tovar explains:
Rob: What was the most difficult specific segment of the game to design? Anything you kept redesigning until you got it totally right?
Dan: The Splatterkills were somewhat difficult to design as the expectations of what the player would be seeing and doing were quite high. We went through a lot of iterations on a single kill before we expanded the system out to the other characters. We really wanted to the player to feel like they were right there in fight crushing heads and ripping limbs off and getting covered in blood the whole time. We eventually decided we wanted to Splatterkills to have the analog stick movements tied to the actions and to have the background drop out so you could focus on the kill. Then we pulled the camera in real tight and dropped the audio. I think it really pushes the brutality to the forefront in doing so.

Semi-on-topic, since it's a new Splatterhouse release.
I picked up the iPhone port of the arcade game/rom yesterday.
Decent try by Namco. The rom runs great but the on-screen controller needs some work. You notice how important the crouching moves are in Splatterhouse when it suddenly difficult to do them.
If Capcom could loan Namco their 8 way joystick code that they use on Street Fighter IV/Capcom Arcade they'd likely be able to smooth out the wonkiness ... otherwise it's not totally un-playable and allows you to start at any level you've previously been on, so at least there's no starting over.
Also includes some survival modes not featured in the original arcade.

laid off? that's awful. they did such a good job on this game. but it seems that this is one of those projects that was sent in to die. as disappointed i am that the team was laid off i am thankful that this was their swan song. it is true to the series and is obviously a labor of love. if you ever contact them again, let them know that their are fans out there that appreciate this game more than they will ever know. and the original trilogy being included on disc is an appreciated exception to the current standards.

Seriously? As soon as the game was done? Or? It's pretty damned good....not for everyone but definitely good! Only thing that bugs me so far is how FAST you have to pull off some of the combos (playing it on normal) and the load times when you die (which is surprisingly frequently). It doesn't handhold you at all, so I've been kind of learning things as I go....means I die a lot.

I am highly dissapointed by splatterhouse, After years of waiting for a new game in the series (since ps1 days) they release this mainstream, lets appeal to your typical UFC watching Jock boy Bro. The soundtrack sucks albeit for Municipal waste, Terrorizer, and a few other obscure metal bands, why they have to fill the rest of the soundtrack in with garbage metal is beyond me. The game feels and looks like it was rushed out, Ahhh I just dont like it! Permission to jump down my throat.

I picked up Heavy Rain for $34.99 at Amazon's Cyber Monday Lightning deal and tossed in Spatterhouse too. I'd been waiting for a Heavy Rain price drop and I almost passed on Splatterhouse after doing a quick check on reviews. Judging from the scores, I suspect Splatterhouse may drop in price quickly. The 360 reviews seem to edge out the PS3 version by a hair, so I chose the 360 version. I'm all for gory rated M games and Splatterhouse is a classic, so I figured I'd give it a whirl.

Just beat the game. I dont really know what to think. I enjoyed the game and had fun but the ending was very disappointing and I found myself calling the game stupid a lot. There are a lot of games the one could either love or hate and there wouldn't be any middle ground, with Splatterhouse though, I think its very easy to be in middle or just indifferent. Like I said before, I really did enjoy the game, but I think its a game that if it was never released, I wouldn't have cared much. Splatterhouse will always hold a special place in my heart as being the first TurboGrafx game I had owned and completed and for that I am very thankful the series continues to splatter blood and guts all over the screen of my television.

i agree, the ending is disappointing. and the game does have its faults. but i don't care. i love it. i grew up on splatterhouse and this game recreates the splatterhouse series perfectly. the mask is hilarious at times. "lets show him why we call it splatterhouse." lol. nice!
Phase 4: The Meat Factory is one of the best stages i have played in any game, in a very long time. if only the entire game could have recreated the the mood and style of that stage throughout the entire game.
i am currently doing a second play through on brutal difficulty and i am also doing the survival arenas. to make my purchase worth it, i plan on getting all of the trophies for this game. (which is something i rarely do.)

i put a u.s. quarter on the base of it to show its actual size. the mask has some weight to it too. this was not a cheap piece of crap like the Batman:AA baterang was.
Got mine today also. Gotta say this is quite an awesome bonus compared to the usual crap with preorders. Looks quite fetching next to my wifes Autographed picture of a meet n' greet with Toby Kieth... (Well, she doesn't think so.)

I LOVE THIS GAME! I was a big fan of the Turbografx-16 game and it's cool to see that this new title is a remake of that title and I really liked the combat too. Yeah, the load times were annoying but I was still glued to it and I even did a crazy review of it.

laid off? that's awful. they did such a good job on this game. but it seems that this is one of those projects that was sent in to die. as disappointed i am that the team was laid off i am thankful that this was their swan song. it is true to the series and is obviously a labor of love. if you ever contact them again, let them know that their are fans out there that appreciate this game more than they will ever know. and the original trilogy being included on disc is an appreciated exception to the current standards.
I have talked to Dan Tovar since he was laid off, and I've passed along your sentiments - along with those of many other Splatterhouse fans.
It's a damned shame we most likely will not see a sequel - this one was built on the remnants of a failed prototype, and the thought of what the team could have done with a sequel under their control from the start is tantalizing, to say the least.

I bought it at $60, i've spent more time on that game than I have any other release in al long long time. I'm not sure what the reviewers were expecting, and yeah it has a couple parts that could stand to be improved, but overall its a lot of hectic fun.

How are the retro Splatterhouses handled? Do they take up the whole screen if you're playing in SD on a non widescreen tv? Do you have unlimited continues?
