How are the retro Splatterhouses handled? Do they take up the whole screen if you're playing in SD on a non widescreen tv? Do you have unlimited continues?
They don't take up the whole screen on non-widescreen SD TVs. But you do have unlimited continues, and all of the passwords for 2 and 3 work.

Eh.. that's annoying. I can't stand it when games do that.. :/

Just got done playing this game (bought it on launch and hadn't really had time to mess with it). Overall- *really* enjoyed it. I strongly suggest it to fans of the other entries in the series- or people looking for a cheezy, funny, violent, booby action game.
Good times!

Bit of a necro-bump here, but I didn't see the point in starting a new thread for this.
Today, after ten years online, I shut down West Mansion - but not before posting what could be the definitive article on the history of the new game. It covers as much of the development history as possible, what might have been if the game had been a success and the possibility of a sequel. Take a look:

Thanks for the heads up Dire! Am doing a last viewing and DLing :) Hope you're archiving the site at least! It's a shame to see it go....

No problem, max. And yes, it's being archived. I'm saving the whole thing on my external hard drive as we speak, soon to be followed by a backup DVD. WM will remain on KonTek for the foreseeable future, though. And at some point the new webmaster may take the reigns.

Some new news: I'm now working with Howard Drossin to get the SH '10 score (his original music, not the songs from the licensed bands) released to the public via bandcamp.com. It's been a matter of ID'ing which tracks correspond to which parts of the game so they can be properly tagged and labeled. Between Howard, myself, Dan Tovar and Mark Brown we currently have 24 of the 34 tracks named. Hopefully the rest will follow in short order.
I'll post again with additional updates as this project proceeds.

Two things:
1. Howard's score has been released. You can buy both albums starting here (http://howarddrossin.bandcamp.com/album/splatterhouse-volume-1-metal), as well as snag a free remix album. BTW, check the special thanks on each page for a familiar name. :D
2. The fangame "Manos" The Revenge of Torgo has been finished. View the trailer and get the download link here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODVasF73y8o

One of the guys on T3M has been poking around the Splatterhouse '10 DLC and unearthed a lot of interesting stuff. Among what he's discovered is unused text, evidence of an alternate ending, alternate phase titles and what looks to be entire missing chapters. He's been posting all of his discoveries in this thread (http://z4.invisionfree.com/The_Third_Moon/index.php?showtopic=11395), so feel free to check it out.
I'm in the process of cleaning up the unused text and putting it out there for all to read. The first bit I've isolated is this, which I call The Lost Tale of Captain Francisco Miguel Cortés:
***
"I tell this story to myself, for no man will ever hear it."
"I once was Francisco Miguel Cortés, Captain of the treasure galleon Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion. She lays broken on the ocean bed now, weighed down by heathen gold as heavy as our sins. I envy those that drowned, for those of us swept up on these bleak shores have paid a heavier toll."
"The survivors, and I among them, were hunted tirelessly, and with grim delight by the slimy man-things that dwell here. Those that evaded capture were slowly changed; corrupted. They are gone now, but I am not alone; never alone."
"I sought refuge in this temple; the only place those ghouls would dare not trespass. At its center stood a golden Sarcophagus oh! So beautiful I swear I could see the faces of angels beneath its surface. Inside that casket: a mask of bone the sight of which did chill my blood. The creatures were greatly afraid of this thing. And in their fear I saw hope. I would swear that mask called to me, offering a chance for escape, and for salvation. 'If you trust me,' it whispered, 'if you put me on...' And so I did..."
"A transformation, a face and a body that were not my own. A confusion of images, a hunger - and so much blood. I was lost. Such power; impossible to describe..."
"...but not enough. For something else came; all horns and fury, immeasurably vast, awful. The Lord Thule..."
"I was captured, condemned and imprisoned. The golden casket I had coveted would be mine now; now and forever... I crave a death so long in coming; but this cursed mask torments me still. In time they shall learn what I have learned..."
"...the flesh is a dungeon for the soul."
***
Just to confirm that this is all legit, I messaged Dan Tovar on Facebook and asked him if the name Francisco Miguel Cortés meant anything to him. His response?
"mebbe...hehe"
I'd call that a big yes.

If anyone's interested, West Mansion's come back!... sort of. I've started a Facebook page for WM, and I'll be posting links to any new or interesting Splatterhouse things that surface as time goes on. Feel free to "like" it if you're on Facebook.

Is there a legitimate way to download a save for this game that unlocks the original games?

Yeah and it reall did not deserve that low of a score, given some of the drivel that receives far higher scores....
If you enjoy bloody over the top and somewhat cheesy action or remember the series fondly at all, there is a lot of fun to be had here. Just make sure to install it on your HDD if you play it on 360 as it is slightly buggy otherwise.

Your first mistake was listening to IGN. Scores for Splatterhouse ranged from high (highest being 8.2 by Planet Xbox 360 and PlayStation Unlimited) to low (3 by bit-tech.net), and more often than not the players themselves ranked the game much higher than the professionals. For a fairly complete list of reviews, go here (http://splatterhouse.kontek.net/2010.html).
And as I once said: "...consider this: other, smaller review sites and player reviews have consistently been in the average to above average range. How is this possible if Splatterhouse sucks as badly as the big review sites say it does? It's not. But because they didn't get paid, they felt it was their duty to trash the game instead of treating it fairly. And the problem with this is that a lot of the mindless sheep out there consider those sites 'the authority.' Hey, IGN trashed it, it must suck. No need to even rent it or borrow a copy from a friend and try it for myself and form my own opinion, right? I'll just go back to playing whatever IGN says is great, because they know what they're talking about. No question about that."

I'm glad you did, when i first saw the demo for Splatterhouse I wanted it. BADLY. But, when I heard what had happened to BR and the whole team working on it.... I was hesitant, to say the least, about purchasing the game. I did end up getting it that January. But I know I am not the only person that started avoiding Namco because i was worried about their business practices. The more the whole story can get out there the better.

I still have a sealed copy for XBox 360 that I hope to someday open and give it a go. The new version of Splatterhouse definitely looks bloody interesting but if that game fails to catch my attention, there's always Splatterhouse 1-3.

You do know that the replies you're quoting are from 2011 and 2012 respectively, right? I was a lone voice in the wilderness, but hopefully I clued a few people in on what actually happened behind the scenes at Namco Bandai in late 2010. Regarding the cut Captain Cortés VO: I heard it right after I made that post, direct from the guy that originally extracted it. He's done so much more work since, even buying and working with earlier betas to dig stuff out that's never been seen by the public. And he has found some very interesting stuff. Here's his most recent video. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SC_cn8tBQrw)
