For those of you here that have been following the twisted saga of the upcoming Splatterhouse game (which, BTW, is still coming out), I have a brand new, exclusive interview with Dave Wilkins (lead artist) and Dan Tovar (co-producer) of Namco Bandai Games America.

Read the interview here (http://z4.invisionfree.com/The_Third_Moon/index.php?showtopic=8967).

No, the whole BottleRocket fiasco is not cleared up in this interview - in fact, it's barely mentioned - but hopefully this'll give you a good idea of where the game is heading.

I really liked the promo videos I saw from the scrapped Bottle Rocket game.

I'm interested in seeing what comes of this project and if they can manage to rescue it from whatever play and/or development issues were plaguing the previous design.

I may be in the minority here, but I would really hope that they make it a side scroller like the original. I loved the original game (got the coin-op) and the Genesis sequel, but didn't like the 3rd version on the Genesis. You could could just run circles around the monsters and easily dispatch them with a few cheap shots.

I'm looking for anything (Software related, promo stuff, fan material etc....and I'm still looking for a Splatterhouse marquee). So I'm really looking forward to this new project.

It's going to be a 3D title. That's been known for well over a year. I'd have liked to see a side-scroller myself, but even I - as big a champion of 2D games as I am - saw the writing on the wall.

Then keep an eye on West Mansion the closer the game draws to release. There's some interesting stuff in the works...

I always like features like this. Unlockables that let you play earlier revisions of games. Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden Black let XBOX gamers play NG1, 2, and 3, and also NG Arcade depending on what version you got. They took the option out with the release of Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

Yeah that alone has made Splatterhouse a must have imo. Really great when they do that.

With the original development team gone, what about the stuff they worked on? It sounds like a lot of it is being kept if they're still on track for a 2010 release, or was BR's contribution that insignificant?

Also, is this game going to be like every other third person brawler except not on par with Ninja Gaiden or Bayonetta etc.? :(

Or will it be awesome? Already, Dead to Rights is looking and sounding like a vast improvement over the last-gen (last-last-gen) originals, so Namco Hometek (if they're taking the lead on both of these) has actually been doing some worthwhile work lately.

There was no way they could have dropped everything and started from scratch, so a lot of the BR stuff has received a heavy polish, including new skins. The junk like Robo-Ape at least now looks like it fits in with the Splatterhouse look.

To my knowledge Namco Hometek is taking the lead on Splatterhouse, ably assisted by several former BR programmers and artists. Not the guys that were trying to turn this into Mark of Kri III starring Rick Taylor, though. They're long gone.

LOL

I'll be spilling the beans soon. I didn't actually sign an NDA; rather, I made a good faith promise that I would run what I had to say past PR first before blabbing all about it all over the net, so they could catch anything they don't want leaked. They've been incredibly awesome with me ever since they first announced the game two years ago, so I had no problem agreeing to this.

PR has my review, it's just a matter of waiting to get it back now. Once I have it, I'll post it.

A friend of mine summed up this whole experience based on what I told him though:

Dire's being modest. He got the red carpet rolled out for him and basically got treated like he was Roger frickin' Ebert, whose review could make or break the game.

Ed Oscuro

PR has given my review their approval, so here it is:

On Saturday, April 24, at the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival XII in Worcester, Massachusetts, I was given an exclusive sneak preview of the new Splatterhouse by the game's producer, Dan Tovar of Namco Bandai Games America.

Before I launch into my review of the demo I played, let me give you a little background: I traveled to the festival that morning from Southeastern Connecticut with a friend from work, Brenton. The doors opened at noon, we made it inside to the ticket counter and got our VIP bracelets. Then we headed inside to find Dan. However, no one seemed to know where he was - or where the VIP room with the demo was set up - so we started hunting for him.

About an hour later, we finally found him handing out stuff near the staircase to the merchandise level. I introduced myself and Brenton, and we headed outside to start talking business, because it was impossible to hear in there.

Dan's a pretty cool guy to hang out with. We talked Splatterhouse past and future and touched base on a lot of things. Given the somewhat negative reaction I've seen to the new trailer (the one released on 4/16, referred to hereafter as the "new" trailer), I made it a point to ask him what the deal was with it. According to him, they were unable to release a trailer that really showcases the amount of carnage in the game, which is why they went the route they took. It also helped that they owned the rights to "Sento nel Core" and could use it without a problem, and they didn't have to wait to get clearance from the bands they've signed to use any of their music.

There was someone else with Dan, someone taking pictures. He had both a digital camera and a videocamera. Very interesting. He snapped a pic of Dan and I, and as it turns out, he also designed the new logo for the game and has done the ads starting to show up in mags like Spin. His name is Jake, from the company Rocking Creative, and he too was a very cool guy to hang out with.

Dan told me that they were sharing the upstairs VIP room with Metal Blade Records and we had to wait for them to clear out before we went up. So we talked some more, and I thanked him for everything he's done so far, like being so willing to work with the fan community on this, and giving me unprecedented access to promotional materials. As I said to him, I don't think a fansite webmaster has ever received this kind of treatment before.

Finally, it was time. So Dan, Brenton, Jake and I all headed up to the VIP room. We went up several flights of stairs, opened a door and were greeted by a life-size poster (http://splatterhouse.kontek.net/packs/rick_character_render.jpg). Already this was looking sweet. They also had the Dave Wilkins Splatterhouse Part 2 redesign poster (http://splatterhouse.kontek.net/SDcon_poster_01.jpg) hanging up.

And there it was, in a corner of the room. The reason I had come. There was an Xbox 360 hooked up to an HD TV, and on the screen was a suitably rotten and decaying Deadman (aka zombie), growling and writhing.

The demo was on.

So we all sat down. It's when I saw Jake setting up his video camera that it hit me: they were going to film this.

Dan started it up. The demo itself was very much a work in progress, and as such there were a few minor pre-alpha bugs that hadn't been ironed out yet. But that didn't matter. The first stage he walked us through was the catacombs beneath West Mansion, as shown in many of the recently released screenshots. There were Deadmen and "lizard monsters" infesting the stage. We got to see the chainsaw, 2x4 and a couple of Splatterkills in action. Blood was flying everywhere, and continued to do so throughout the rest of the demo. For those concerned about the character models after seeing the new trailer, nothing looked plasticky.

Dan demonstrated some of the different ways to open doors, showcasing one of Rick's special moves for one of them, a shoulder thrust. A couple of other doors, living doors, were handled very brutally. At one point he entered a room that contained a very big tribute to a certain boss fight from Splatterhouse 2. In this room he demonstrated a couple of Rick's super moves, including the return of the special move from Splatterhouse 3 as glimpsed at the end of the new trailer.

Then he reached a point where the demo crashed and he had to reset. When it came time to start going through it again, he handed the controller off to me and it was on. I laid into those Deadmen with gusto... and a roaring chainsaw. Then I started pounding them with both my fists and the 2x4.

What impressed me the most, besides the amount of carnage I was seeing, was the tightness of the controls. It seems to me that in the wave of concern over how the game looks, very few have remembered to ask how it plays. Lay your fears to rest there, because Rick responded perfectly to every command I made. It took me a few tries to get used to pulling off a Splatterkill simply because I had to learn how to do one, but once I had the hang of it I was surprised how easy it became.

The other stage I saw was a 2D stage, as mentioned in the October '09 issue of Play Magazine. Even though it's a bit more platform-y than the earlier games (more than just spike traps here, believe me), it still screamed Splatmosphere and it had plenty of nods to the original trilogy in it. The lead pipe made its first appearance here, as did flying creatures similar to the bats from Splatterhouse.

As far as the audio was concerned, due to the fact it was being filmed, the volume was kept fairly low. It was even worse when the bands were playing downstairs and we had to raise our voices just to be heard on tape. So sadly, the audio portion of the game was mostly lost on me. I did, however, hear a little bit of a Rick/Mask conversation, but not enough to get a real feel for the voice work. At one point during the 2D stage Dan did point out part of the score, which was '80s horror/synth inspired, and he turned up the volume so we could hear it for a moment. What little I heard of that sounded good.

Finally we were done, and I was asked to do an introduction for the video, which should be shown on the official Splatterhouse YouTube channel. I introduced myself, plugged West Mansion and did my best to describe what I had just seen. I haven't seen this video yet, because it has yet to be edited and released as of this writing, but I hope they got my good side (not sure if I really have one, but oh well) and that I didn't come off like too much of a gibbering fanboy. Afterwards, Dan took the opportunity to give both Brenton and myself armloads of swag: shirts, posters, stickers and the like.

At that point, we finally parted ways. Brenton and I went to check out some of the bands playing. We saw Holy Grail, Cattle Decapitation and Skeletonwitch (who I really liked) before we left. An aside: Brenton went in not knowing what Splatterhouse was (aside from what I'd told him), but walked out a fan after seeing the demo. Splatterhouse has moved up right to the top of his "must buy" list.

I wholeheartedly approve of what I saw that day. To sum it up, we have Splatmosphere, the gameplay is there, and the controls are easy to figure out; intuitive, even. And oh man, does the blood fly. There are still many months left to go until the game is released, but based on what I saw I have every reason to believe that Dan and his team will deliver a title worthy of the Splatterhouse name.

This fall, prepare yourselves.

Naw, don't worry 'bout it. It's the same as saying that the Beatles ripped-off Oasis. Inconceivable! LOL

Since GoW has been the top of ultra-violent action recently, it owes more to Splatterhouse for it's trailblazing, even if it does lift a bit of it's modern style in turn.

I really hope this new Splatterhouse reboot doesn't end up becoming another Castlevania Lament of Innocence ripoff #99.

Fixed. Just because God of War made the style popular doesn't mean whatever game ripped off whatever.

Devil May Cry is the original game of this style, however the gameplay of LoI was very different. Instead of a single attack leading into other single attacks to create your set of combos you were given a light and heavy attack button with which to do pre existing combos from. Multiple different types of combos could be led into and you also had a few single attack moves that you could lead into each other, start off the combo, break off the combo to lead into an air combo, etc.

GoW is a ripoff of LoI's style except that GoW's has less of a variety, a lot of useless attacks, and the game just over isn't that good. It doesn't suck, but not as good as LoI. Better level design for sure, but the gameplay on LoI is amazing. Dante's Inferno is a complete ripoff of GoW from how spells are used, how you evade, to how you open doors, get soul points, mp points, and life points. It's just a much better game due to the combat system.

Yeah...like Devil May Cry if it was nothing but a button masher. DMC requires a lot more finesse IMO. That being said (and having JUST played through the whole GoW trilogy and HATED it...HATED!!!) I can't see Splatterhouse working with that control/gameplay style. It'll be different for sure. I'm expecting more of a 3D Final Fight feel too it...like a tighter more responsive God Hand or something...

I own LoI, DMC 1 and Rygar: The Legendary Adventure (and Bayonetta too, that count?), and I like them all quite a bit. The demo I played reminded me of them a little in some parts, but not very much, certainly not enough to be considered a rip-off.

If it helps, your primary weapons in Splatterhouse are your fists and your body, as I recall. The weapons are going to be used sparingly, if I recall one of the Play Magazine articles (the October '09 one, I think) correctly.

DMC can be a button masher also. I dislike GoW also but there is one standard combo list: Square x 1-4, Triangle. Triangle x 3. Triangle, Square x 1-2, Triangle, and then all the single standard attacks. Most attacks are weak or useless so you just use Triangle x 3, or Square x 2, Triangle(atleast I do) on both GoW 1 and 2, most likely 3 as well.

Here's a video of me playing Devil May Cry. This video is actually three years old and I have a reckless play style usually going for stylish above all else(including evasion.) That's a brand new game on Very Hard on DMC3 SE, S rank on the second stage. I also S ranked the first, played the third but only A rank.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T88wIt6rrtg

From my reckless play style it looks as if DMC3 was being played like a button masher. I'm fairly good at the series and much better now than you saw me there, but there are amazing combo videos that make me realize I'm just a noob like most every other player.

Sounds as if the "Splatterkills" are more input combo based than the recent glut of quick-time finishers. Please do correct me if I am mistaken here. RE4 and GoW handled quick-time events/kills (respectively) extremely well, but it's beyond played-out by this point (at least until they are handled in a new way or to a different effect). I'm glad they didn't fall into that design trap.

You would be correct. Different controller moves = different Splatterkills.

This all making it harder to wait for the game to come out....Thanks for the info Dire I have been worried about how this would turn out and it sounds like its going to be pretty awesome. Now I wonder what the conditions are for unlocking the original games will be.

I can't wait to play a new Splatterhouse. I've been looking forward to this one since I saw it listed a year or two ago. I guess I was always a Friday the 13th fan, so this one drew me in easily. I've been pissed at Namco since I spent 12+ hours stuck on a single race in Ridge Racer 6, which I still can't beat. I just hope this one doesn't drive me as nuts.

I'll wait for reviews. I am still very skeptical of this game.

Give me a couple of months and I'll have one for you. I intend to call it as it is: if it's great, I'll say it's great and if it sucks, I'll say it sucks, etc. Namco's not paying me anything and it's my duty to the fans to see that they get an honest review from someone that knows the series.

New interview with Dan Tovar on Gametrailers (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/blood-equals-splatterhouse/100445)

What Dan told me in Worcester, both before, during and after playing the demo, he repeated almost word-for-word in this video. Having seen the blood feature in action, I can confirm that's how it works.

Lol hell, I just realized I'm about 40 miles east of the studio. (In Boston.) No realistic chance of making it over there, though, I don't think.

You're saying you live 40 miles east of Worcester, I take it. I'm not sure what studio you're talking about, though.

"there will be DLC available when the game ships and post launch."

Again with the incomplete games.

Rob, I'm assuming this game is going to be full retail of $59.99? I didn't see anything online yet. Doesn't really matter, I was just assuming.

From what I've been told, the game will be complete and the DLC will be extra stuff. And the three classic games included will not be DLC, just unlockables.

Possibly. I honestly have no idea at this point, but I would think so.

Oh, you just met somebody in Worcester?

And no, I don't live here in Boston.

Worcester was where the New England Metal & Hardcore Festival was being held, the one that Namco Bandai was sponsoring. So yeah, I traveled up there, met the game's producer and played the demo.

Posters? Sure. I got some, as you saw. They're all gone now though.

Hmmm... demand for them has been so high that maybe I can talk NB into giving me some more.

Awesome new storyline-themed trailer and preview from IGN: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/109/1095369p1.html - Biggy Man appearance ahoy!

Here's proof that Rick is not in fact "John Cena in a Halloween mask." I am so utterly sick of seeing this comment repeated across the internet. I'm so sick of it that I want to be able to to reach into the PC and smack every single person I see that posts it. In the trailer, you see Rick as he normally is. Those aren't shorts he's wearing, they're what's left of his pants.

thanks for the feature, Dire. and i agree, this game isnt getting enough credit. and ppl are writing it off w/o a good reason. even if the game ends up being average, it will be worth owning for the Spatterhouse Trilogy alone.

i already have this game preordered. day one.

I agree, people are slagging it just to slag it, I think. Then again, it wouldn't be a Splatterhouse if people weren't badmouthing it.

I have a new deconstruction feature coming up regarding this trailer as well. Look for it soon!
