Really short and not particularly hard. Mix that with a decent story and you have the afternoon tea of RPGs. And I likes me my afternoon tea.

67. Phantasy Star

Finally, I got to play this. The real reason I bought Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection was so I could have access to all four Phantasy Star games, a series I've long been told is amazing but never had the chance to sit down with myself. The game itself was amazing. A surprisingly compelling story mixed with simple gameplay. I found the game to be on the short side and that might be because it is, now that I think about it. While playing, I figured it had something to do with everything being layed out in an easy to understand 'go level here until win' format. Fun times.

I'm loving these modern Namco remakes so damn much. This one just doesn't have the same content bulk of the Pac-Man remake, but I guess that's to be expected (unlike Pac-man, I there's only really one way to do Galaga). But what it lacks in girth it makes up for in style. I highly recommend this.

I enjoyed this. I had all the great storytelling of the first game, along with even more great voice acting and a sprawling city to explore. I have a few issues with the combat system in this one, though. Yeah, it's much easier to fight in the game, it doesn't feel as stiff as it did in Arkham Asylum, but that seems to have come at a price. I guess the programmers felt that a more fluid, easier to use combat system would make the game too easy, so all the enemies are frustrating and take forever to kill. I can't speak for everyone else, but I felt that it was taking away from the fun.

Sonic Adventure felt more like a chore this time. I can see now that the controls for this game weren't even quite perfect as much as the game is praised. Sonic's downhill slide actually started with this game. Sonic 3D Blast actually had very good controls and was easy to play. Sonic Adventure's controls are just sloppy but the level design makes it a little more bearable and less noticeable. I can't wait to get to Sonic Generations because that game's demo seems like it will be really nice.

Since these chapters are rather short and there really isn't anything different between them other than the story, I decided to finish them off all in one go before making a post. This is an enjoyable little series. The puzzles are somewhat challenging, the story is simple (even going so far as to set itself up for more) and the gameplay is quiz style. You could do a lot worse for $12.

Oh, how much do I love this game. This was the highlight of Golf Land birthday parties when I was a kid (to the point that the manager of our local Golf Land had three of these cabinets in the arcade for the last few years of it's life). As I'm sure everyone on the planet has seen and/or played this game by now, I'm going to save my breath and just say 'go play thing'.

Uncharted 3. Amazing game, but there are a couple cryptic puzzles that were some bullshit. I took so much time on these two puzzles that it asked me if it would like to complete the puzzle for me, one of which because instead of looking at a mark from a distance, I went right up to it so it didn't play a cutscene, so technically bad design and not my fault. There's also one puzzle clue that's given to you incorrectly, but I finished that pretty easily.

I don't regret purchasing Uncharted 3 on day one though. The game is a must own title for sure. Uncharted 3 is a much more cinematic experience than the first two though. There's not as much gameplay in comparison, so I'd say that Uncharted 2 overall edges out Uncharted 3 because of that reason. The gameplay aspect I liked the most about Uncharted 3 was the new single player melee combat. While all the melee only scenes are extremely easy, the melee combat was reworked and are now pretty fun. Aside from that, my overall favorite part of the game was near the end. Similar to the jeep chase scene right before Sanctuary on Uncharted 2 but slightly different. You guys will see when you get there.

Also beat Batman Arkham City which is a great game, Fist of the North Star Ken's Rage which is total shit and think that Koei should stop making video games, and some others.

I finally got a chance to beat game I was exposed to over 20 years ago (from issue #8 of Nintendo Power) and never managed to. I never owned the game, instead opting to rent it from the local video store.

I played it from start to finish this time and marveled at how relatively short the game actually is. I still think it was a good effort from Capcom, with colorful graphics, excellent sound and music, and a storyline that made sense in the context of the source material.

I almost beat Castlevania (NES) today but the game froze while fighting the Grim Reaper for the umpteenth time and I did not feel like starting from scratch. Maybe in 2012...

Ah, back before I even knew it had a Japanese-only prequel. King's Field II (III in Japan) probably won't be as easy to finish as quickly since its fields are a bit more open.

Ninja Gaiden (NES)

This game has beat me for over 20 years and I would always get close, but going back to 6-1 after being beaten by the boss was just too much to bear. I admit I let the Game Genie grant me three wishes (or is it lives? I forget...) because I wanted to see the ending on my own. I am thinking of picking the other two up but I don't know yet. I remember the second one almost as much because of the strategy guide Nintendo Power released.

Just beat Modern Warfare 3. It was a nice ending to the trilogy but I still want more.

1) God of War III (PS3) I could've done without the timed jumping sequences, but other than that an amazing game as expected.
2) the Conduit Special Edition (Wii) Nothing here we have not seen a million times before, however for a quick run & gun it was an enjoyable game.
3) Mario Super Sluggers (Wii) A great game for my wife & I to play, of course once she fell asleep I took on the single player adventure.
4) Batman Arkham City (PS3) Amazing game definitely the best game I completed all year which is not saying much considering how sad 2011 has been for video game completion. Hopefully trying to complete the side quests does not take too long, and hinder me from finishing the ton of games started but not finished.

Technically I beat Otomedius Excellent a few days ago, but now I'm good enough to beat the game on Normal without losing a single life. I've beaten Normal with all but one of the initial 7 girls. Just seeing the credits in this game is no big accomplishment since all but the last boss will eventually time out and run off and there are unlimited continues, but I think I've done well enough to be proud of myself.

11/27/11: Ninja Gaiden II (NES)

I admit it....I'm a filthy rotten cheater. I used the Game Genie this time to make the game easier to play. The game is still legitimately hard even with the assistance of Galoob's little attachment. There are countless pits and numerous flying menaces to make the going treacherous. The lightning level just about gave me fits as there are too many things going after you while the screen goes dark. I can't tell how many times I fell into a pit mistiming my jump and hitting an enemy that paced back and forth on the safe ledge.

I was equally impressed with this game's visuals, sounds, music, and cutscenes. It makes me want to get the third of the series despite the fact it looks inferior to the other two in terms of the gameplay and the audio/video department. I could get it on Virtual Console or play it on an emulator but I want the satisfaction of playing it on the original hardware. Too bad to get a copy of it plus the manual is more than I am willing to spend at the moment.

15. Uncharted 3 - Beat this the day it was released in practically one sitting, first time I've ever done such a thing. It was pretty much on par with Uncharted 2, had a few issues here and there, but otherwise everything went pretty smoothly.

16. Luigi's Mansion (GC) - Figured I'd celebrate the 10 year anniversary (really?....how time flies) of the Gamecube by beating one of it's launch titles. The game always seemed to get a lot of hate, but I found it to be rather creative and pretty damn fun. Only problem was the fixed camera got in the way at times, particularly during the final boss fight, otherwise it was nice to finally see Luigi star in his own (official) title.

Completed Corona Mountain and finished my game in Super Mario Sunshine with 105 shines. I could get 120 but I don't really care about 100% completion in this game. It was good run all the same and I enjoyed it while it lasted. Now back to the The Wind Waker after a 5 month absence.

17. Super Mario Sunshine (GC) - I both loved and hated this game, I also understand some of the hate surrounding it. The FLUDD system was a fun one, but half way through the game it seemed to ditch the "clean everything up" stuff and went more towards "get through those annoying Secret of.... levels" which I spent majority of the my play through trying to beat and I can't forget to add how completely useless Yoshi is this time around. The game also seemed to lack a certain polish most major Nintendo games have since at times the controls felt too slippery, Mario didn't jump as far as you'd expect (if at all) and I hit a few weird glitches along the way, but that last one seems to come naturally with me when I play any game. Overall it was a fun game, but doesn't hold a candle to Super Mario 64.

Finished up a Nuzlocke Challenge on this one, I have to say that after playing the newer games, it's really hard to come back to the older Pokemon titles. You don't really notice things like abilities until you don't have access to them anymore.

1) God of War III (PS3) I could've done without the timed jumping sequences, but other than that an amazing game as expected.
2) the Conduit Special Edition (Wii) Nothing here we have not seen a million times before, however for a quick run & gun it was an enjoyable game.
3) Mario Super Sluggers (Wii) A great game for my wife & I to play, of course once she fell asleep I took on the single player adventure.
4) Batman Arkham City (PS3) Amazing game definitely the best game I completed all year which is not saying much considering how sad 2011 has been for video game completion. Hopefully trying to complete the side quests does not take too long, and hinder me from finishing the ton of games started but not finished.
5) Max Payne 2: Fall of Max Payne (PS2) Pretty much had to beat it twice b/c of a corrupt memory card in the final chapter on the 1st go. It has been awhile since I beat the first Max Payne & I do remember enjoying it more than this, but I am still looking forward to the 3rd.

Back to the Future: The Game (Wii)

I decided to plow through to the end of the game as I only had part of Episode 4 to go and the full final episode. I liked the episodic content and am thankful for the opportunity to finally get to play it in disc form! The rare treat was the cameo of Michael J. Fox as one (well, a couple) of the characters toward the end. Anyone who is on the fence about the game really should try it out in whatever format they can get their hands on!

Aliens was a bit dissapointing, I know Wayforward can do better. It obviously isn't as good as the Castlavania or Metroid games, but it was decent. The lack of enemy variety and those damn dead end paths were annoying... At least I got it on sale.

Solatorobo was great, I loved the characters and while I was a bit iffy on the combat at first, it managed to be simple and fun, getting the job done. The story, characters, and soundtrack were awesome, and I loved those occasional hand-drawn backrounds. Thanks XSEED!

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much out of this. It had been sitting on my PS3's hdd since Sony gave the free games out months ago, but I was presently surprised. This was a great handheld title, I had a lot of fun with it and I can't wait to move onto the PS3 version and see how that one holds up compared to this.

I just cleared my first run through of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Definitely not 100% I was only missing 6 hearts (so 22 pieces). There's a lot of side quests and I certainly didn't bother with many. All the same this is likely my last clear for 2011 and I guess a more productive year as I've had. I think it ended on a high note since I've always had affinity towards TWW. Here's to another year and perhaps another Zelda.

Sonic Adventure 2 is a headache. Glad that's over with.

I remember reading about this game back when it was new. Even though I've never been big, or even really good at, fighting games, I've always found the more creative ones interesting and fun. Sadly, I didn't get my PS1 until late in it's life, so this was just another game that slipped by. Having finally played it, I can say that it's one of the more simple fighting games I've sat down with. Not plethora of fancy moves, aside from the animal transformations, just decent 'punch the guy until he's dead' action.

Finished Skyrim tonight. "Finished" as in the main quest, all side quests, 100+ miscellaneous quests and all the achievements. 147 hours and change. Probably one of (if not the) best games I've ever played. Now I'll give it rest...at least until the DLC starts to hit.

Yeah I would say it is my determination and also the rules I set down for myself to not re-play any games this year unless I was having to use an emulator at a friend's house rather than my real consoles at home. What surprises me the most is that I still actually have hard drive space left after recording all the video footage of ALL the games on my list.

It's been 4 months since I last posted here so here's the catch up post before the year is actually over!

12/22 - Fire Emblem Path of Radiance (GCN) (time - 39:10'22'' Oscar and Ike 84 wins) - Took me awhile to get around to this one for some reason. I'm a huge FE fan and this was no dissapointment. I will be playing the sequel very soon!

12/15 - Heroes of Might and Magic II Gold (PC) (Archibald campaign in 426 days; Cyclops rating) - My favorite in the series and I will come back to this game until I die, it's not only one of my favorite PC games, but probably one of my favorite all time.

12/7 - Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PS3) (time = 119:11'36'' to Platinum) - Great game, great story. Way to slow and glitchy in the last 40-50 hours. Definitely not GoTY worthy like most people seem to think. Just another solid Bethesda title, far from perfect.

11/11 - Unreal Tournament 3 (PS3) (Campaign on Normal) - Never actually played an unreal game until this one, I was pleasently content with this game. It's nice to take a break from all the lengthy RPGs and such and shoot things up.

11/9 - WWF Smackdown! (PS1) (Pre-season complete; Season - Fed. and Int. belts) - Another one of those games I can go back to again and again, reminds me of simpler times hah.

11/7 - Muramasa The Demon Blade (Wii) (Momohime lvl 56; time = 10:31) - Good game, gorgeous to look at, but very repetetive I couldn't bring myself to play as the other character through all the same levels.

11/2 - Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii) (time = 23:17; 120 stars, skipped green stars) Great game, awesome levels, Mario games get easier and easier as they move towards a new generation of kids though. That and the green stars forcing you to replay every level I thought was a bad idea.

10/15 - Dark Souls (PS3) (time = 92:27'44''; Platinum trophy on 10/27 time = 179:07'13'' lvl 138) - This is my Game of the Year, hands down!

9/12 - ESPN NFL 2K5 (PS2) (won Super Bowl on All-Pro) - I can't help it! This is my favorite football game of all time, everyone has their guilty pleasures.

8/29 - Catherine (PS3) (roughly 20 hours on normal) - Awesome game, definitely has my "most original" vote; I much enjoyed the characters and the story and found block climbing addictive.

Really fun series. I like how they group together events from all five games and the chapters before them into a semi-tight story. Really great stuff.

1) God of War III (PS3) I could've done without the timed jumping sequences, but other than that an amazing game as expected.
2) the Conduit Special Edition (Wii) Nothing here we have not seen a million times before, however for a quick run & gun it was an enjoyable game.
3) Mario Super Sluggers (Wii) A great game for my wife & I to play, of course once she fell asleep I took on the single player adventure.
4) Batman Arkham City (PS3) Amazing game definitely the best game I completed all year which is not saying much considering how sad 2011 has been for video game completion. Hopefully trying to complete the side quests does not take too long, and hinder me from finishing the ton of games started but not finished.
5) Max Payne 2: Fall of Max Payne (PS2) Pretty much had to beat it twice b/c of a corrupt memory card in the final chapter on the 1st go. It has been awhile since I beat the first Max Payne & I do remember enjoying it more than this, but I am still looking forward to the 3rd.
6) Uncharted Drake's Fortune (PS3) Received this at Christmas last year and shelved it for some reason. Big mistake this game was amazing. Thankfully I received Uncharted 2 for Christmas this year so maybe before the ball drops I will have 2 completed.

And the last game I finish of the year...Modern Warfare 3. Veteran Difficulty of course. These things get easier as the sequels pump out. "Veteran" difficulty in MW3 is closer to "hardcore" difficulty in COD2 or COD4 IMO. Oh well, fun single player game. Took me 11:30 to get through. 2 hours of that were on 2 particular checkpoints. The rest was cake.
