Goodwill Hunter
02-01-2011, 10:49 PM
Here at Ice Station Zebra, the mail got delivered and I snuck in a trip to Goodwill before snowmageddon shut down the state…

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/9396/sonicdo.jpg

Found another Tron Legacy item…a deluxe identity disc, with lights, sound, and a display stand for $4.99…it’s begging to be paired up with my 2600 Tron Joystick.

And then the SMS Sonic I got from England through Ebay showed up…in nice shape and complete (except for the sticker!) Finally decided to pay a few pounds instead of a few hundred for one with the US UPC.

Now I think I need to go shovel the driveway…can’t believe the February thread hasn’t started yet…is everyone else already snowed in?

Nice find on the deluxe identity disc. While some of the TRON: Legacy toys were pretty lackluster there were some shining examples of a quality product, that being one of them.

Craigslist pickup this time, a PS1 Blaze Twin Joystick / Twin Shock in box for $30.00.

I've always loved this stick, it's like you cut off the control panel of a Sega Astro City cabinet. While the fighting game enthusiast will complain about the buttons and the sticks, for normal usage and standard arcade games it's pretty nice. My PS Family to USB converter doesn't like this stick so I can't use it for MAME just yet but I've run into other controllers that the converter didn't like either, so I'll have to try another one. Thin profile (which makes it difficult to mod if that's your thing), metal base, cool design. There were black and silver versions as well that are more common. The green / pink layout was mainly used for the Dreamcast version but both versions use the same mold.

Only thing about this item was how I felt like I wasn't going to get it. I responded to the craigslist posting after it was already a few days old. I usually reply very detailed with location radius where it's cool to make the payment, that I have the cash in hand, etc. I got no response so I contacted the poster from a different e-mail address and made the direct request, something like "I want this, I have the money, where do you want to meet?" And THAT one got the response. I then got a call from the seller on the day we were supposed to meet up, setting up the sale for the NEXT day. Then when the next day came I ended up hanging out in front of the Brokaw Fry's until I saw a guy walking up with the stick. I paid and got it and then he went inside the store. LOL

Also, the original DVD release of TRON. This was free, a recovery from someone my girlfriend gave it to who didn't ever watch it or care to have it. I've had the two disc version since it was released but it's nice to have this one back as well.

I have the limited black edition of that stick, although the picture on the box is for the silver one. It's a nice stick and my preferred setup for playing Guilty Gear on my PS1. And a few months ago I sold my extra one on ebay for $50.

Super Mario Bros. 3(Nes)
Super C(Nes)
Double Dragon(Nes)
Double Dragon 2(Nes)
Final Fantasy 3(Snes)
Mario Is Missing(Snes)
Contra 3(Snes)
TMNT: Turtles In Time(Snes)
Donkey Kong Country 3(Snes)
WCW Vs. NWO: World Tour(N64)

The total for the above games was $10 or $1 each at Goodwill. They probably would have been more but I went to the cashier that knows me and knows how I like scooping up old games. I left a bunch of stuff there that I either already have doubles of or that wasn't in much demand. But I was actually in need of a copy of both Contra 3 and WCW Vs. NWO: WT so I'm glad those were there. Guess my lucky streak for finding stuff at Goodwill this year will continue.

Well, this week's finds...

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j238/foxhack/DP/dp-2011-02-01.jpg
Monday -- The Diaboliks: Danger and The Cheebacabra: Metamorphosis were $3 for the pair.
Tuesday -- 00-Soul: The Solid Sounds of the 8-piece BROTHERHOOD - $1

Once again I decided to pick up random albums for no real reason and was very surprised by their content. The Diaboliks is (or was) this weird rock... thing that kinda sounds like The B-52s, only without so much screaming. It's not a bad thing. Metamorphosis is a strange electronic / jazz / funk fusion band and I am VERY impressed by it, so much in fact that I'm going to see if I can buy their second album.

And 00-Soul is hard to explain. It's funk, jazz, mambo, blues, samba, and latin rhythms all in one shot. It's one of the best random purchases I've ever made.

Wednesday:
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j238/foxhack/DP/dp-2011-02-02a.jpg
Speed (Score) - $1
Classic Blues - $1
A Brief History of the Blues (new) - $1
Hightone Records: The First 10 Years - $1
Big Sandy and the Fly-Rite Trio: Fly Right With... - $1
Office Student + Teacher 2003 - $2

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j238/foxhack/DP/dp-2011-02-02b.jpg
$1 each. I picked up Ghosts because it has Christopher Lee in it, Amazon Guardians of Eden because it was made by the Tex Murphy guys, Dune because it's uh, Dune. Rallo Gump is a bit of an oddity, it's actually a CD-R with printed out front and back inlays. The game looks like a typical early PC platformer so I figured a buck wasn't so bad.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j238/foxhack/DP/dp-2011-02-02c.jpg
Office Professional 2003 Upgrade (water damage to case) - $2

I can't even remember the last time I got something off Craigslist. Tonight I picked up two lots.

The second was this Gamecube w/ 3 games and SNES w/ SMW for $40. Nothing spectacular, but there was no picture so I didn't know it was the SNES mini till I picked it up. Also, always nice when stuff comes in a good container!
http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww75/evanwink42/Finds/finds243a.jpg

And the first was this NES lot that I was surprised to get. I didn't hear anything back after emailing for a couple days, then he suggested a time the next day which was great, but I never got an address or heard back. The next day he apologized and we set up for today. This was his ad, no pictures:
"i have 2 systems
about 30 games
4 controllers
one gun
1 system cleaner and eliminator "
Not a lot to go on, but assuming it hadn't been picked over, probably a nice lot.

http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww75/evanwink42/Finds/finds243c.jpg
There's an Atari 2600 ac adapter there, too.

http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww75/evanwink42/Finds/finds243b.jpg
Wizardry, Golgo, Ultima Quest & Exodus, Shingen, FF, Time Lord, Qbert, Immortal, Romance
Tecmo Super Bowl, Wizards & Warriors, Tetris, TMNT, SMB/DH, DK Classics, SMB3, Friday 13thh, PacMan, DDIII, Golf, Tetris, DK Classics, SMBDH
Some good games there.

http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww75/evanwink42/Finds/finds243d.jpg
And there were some boxes/maps/manuals! Pretty beat up, but a bunch of stuff I didn't have. Both maps for FF, Map and boxfor Genghis kahn (and game is in the box), etc etc.

Last was this map for Miracle Warriors on SMS, which I've long needed to make my copy complete!
http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww75/evanwink42/Finds/finds243e.jpg

somebody played the crap out of this stuff, too, which I like to see. Mint stuff is awesome, but there is something cool about seeing little hand-written symbols next to a weapon list or somesuch on a map, even if I don't know what their symbols mean.

Oh, and this NES lot was $25.

I scooped a couple minor things yesterday:
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/2225/030211004.jpg
Got the GunCon2 for $1.99 - don't own any GunCon games so I haven't tested it yet.
Scooped the 3 SNES games for $2 - I traded in a SNES pad for a discount. It was nice to get a copy of KI and DKC2 for such a low price but I think HyperZone caught my eye. I've never heard of it before but having an interesting label and the fact it's by HAL were enough to seal the deal. Turns out to be a spin on Space Harrier mixed with F-Zero and it's mode-7 engine, which incidently works out not bad.

I totally read that "Sim Earth" box as Sim Faith and thought I was a god-game I'd never heard of before @_@

But yes, unfortunately the Planescape box is faded and so is the Blood II box, which were the two games I really wanted :(

Sell them on eBay, get the GOG.com versions. :P

I didn't get anything yesterday. I actually skipped going to the flea market because the line to cross was insanely long, probably because of the severe freeze warning we've had these past two days. (Freeze warnings mean that farm workers go to work much later than normal... so they hold up the line to cross for way too long.) A seller friend of mine told me he spent TWO HOURS waiting to cross. I just went back home instead. :P

Today was okay.

Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 (NFR) with Outlook 2002 and Frontpage 2000 - $10
DVD: Manhunter 2-disc Limited Edition - $4
CD: Virgin Voices: A Tribute To Madonna Volume One (Cleopatra Records) - $1

Small Business Server 2000 is a Not For Resale version. But it only says that on the box... ;) I'm parting out all three components since the package on a whole doesn't usually sell for more than $30.

Manhunter is something I've been wanting to get for years. I have the single DVD version of this. It's in okay shape but the case art has some moisture damage... and the booklet is missing. :( I probably overpaid but it's good trade fodder.

The CD. Well. What can I say about that. I'm familiar with Cleopatra's tributes so...

Garage sales are still non-existent in my area (The snowstorm that rolled through yesterday didn't help things much, especially with getting to work), but I did get, among other things, some stuff for the Master System I was given last week (Which works very well after cleaning it up).

- Sega Genesis (Model 1) \ Master System AV cables (New): $2
- Sega Master System controller (Loose in good condition): $5
- Phantasy Star (Master System. Complete in box in near mint condition): $30
- Doom 64 (N64. Loose in good condition): $6

After getting that Master System working, I proceeded to go onto Amazon and get myself a set of AV cables for it (Because RF looks terrible on my HDTV) as well as finally getting myself a copy of Phantasy Star (The main game I wanted for the system, but could never find within my price range when I had my last SMS; circa 2005). I'm still waiting on my AV cables, but Phantasy Star just arrived today; which looks barely played, although the previous owner was much further into the game than I got on the GBA compilation.

As for the other two things I bought, those came from Game-X-Change. I couldn't figure out where my Master System controller went (I knew I hung onto one of the two controllers I had after selling my previous system, but I can't remember where I put it), but I happened to find one buried in their bin of Genesis controllers. Doom 64 was a spur-of-the-moment thing; I had been wanting to play some Doom recently, but I don't have my 360 anymore, so playing the XBLA version I bought is out of the question; thus leading to me buying the N64 sequel (Which is really hard to see; I wish they had included a flashlight or something...then again, knowing this space marine, he'd probably put away his gun when using the flashlight).

I'm pretty sure they do not have to be partnered together to work. I could test this out for you if I had my power gloves with me, but alas I do not have them at my current location.

I haven't looked at Power Glove prices in ages, but I do believe it is harder to find the sensor by itself than the glove by itself so yes, you could have just looked for the glove only.

Of course you aren't really missing much besides the collector's value.

Dollarama: Shadow of Destiny PC, sealed, $2. This sounded like a great deal though I gather I pretty much paid going price after checking Amazon. I've been wanting to play this for awhile so I'm happy.

Thrift store: The Humans DOS, disc only, $4. I overpaid, but I was happy to - it was from the charity shop for the local no-kill shelter, who are in bad financial shape. I was dropping off a bunch of donations when I bought this. I'm glad to support them.

That said, I'm having trouble running it in DOSBox. :( The installer acts weird, doesn't install the game to the hard drive, and then freezes DOSBox.

After nearly a year since dealing with my favorite vendor last, I headed out to the SJ Flea Market to attempt to find him again. See, the row of sheds that he was located at were torn out awhile back and I had no idea where he moved to. With miles of rows to cover, finding him by blind luck wasn't really an option. He also sells at another small Tuesday flea market that my Uncle goes to (and I used to frequent) so he was able to get the seller's new location. And incredibly, the location was correct.

I never part and price with him, I basically take what I want unless he's offering crazy cheap sales and have him total it up at the end. He always gives me a better price than most but honestly his prices have doubled over what I used to pay - but it's still about half of what everyone else pays so it's no big deal. The games below ended up totaling $45.00.

Why is it every copy of Super The Empire Strikes Back I ever come across is beat to shit? Turns out that I already had a couple of the SMS games so I'll offer those up to my brother for half what I paid. I was pretty psyched about finding a copy of Activision Anthology for the GBA and Pilotwings 64 as well.

He actually has another one as well but the case insert isn't as nice, it has some moisture damage. The booklet for each of them was a single stiff sheet from moisture damage but the carts are pristine and the case I took is in nice shape. It's kinda sad, he had a lot of really nice stuff get damaged in his old location due to weathering. A big box of sealed NES games I bought out of a few years ago is a prime example, some rare stuff in there that had been rotted to dust.

Would you do me a favor? Could you see if that thing includes a manual? I have that same game, boxed, but it doesn't have a manual. I'm trying to figure out if it's missing or if Konami was just cheap like that.

There's a card? No manual, just a 2-sided colour quick reference sheet. The jewel case doesn't even have any artwork - it's a plain jewel case with a CD and nothing else.

No kidding. I thought the box was light when I got it.

BTW: http://www.adventuregamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16712 - Don't know if you saw this, but apparently the resolution can be customized more than the anemic 640x480/800x600 choice it gives you.

Interesting. I'll give it a shot once I get a video card that can run games from 2003 and onwards. :P

Up-resing an average 2002 game will be too much, you think? :b

Did you have a better gaming machine before? My boyfriend was looking over my shoulder and said he thought he'd seen a Kitsune Sniper on TF2 once.

Yes and no. My video card (a GeForce 8800 GT) fried itself last summer, and I STILL haven't been able to save up money to buy a new one. I'm using a crappy GeForce 6400 GS. It runs games, but most run really badly. I'm running TF2 with almost all the graphics options turned off. On the other hand, Deus Ex runs like a dream. :p

As for him seeing me, that's weird. I don't use this name on TF2 / Steam... I used it maybe two or three years ago. I go by "Foxhack" now. Eh.

The copy of Buster's Hidden Treasure doesn't seem to want to work but I have yet to disassemble it and give it a hard cleaning.

Haha dude, i just bought stuff from that guy 2 weeks ago! I got Michel Jackson's moon walker for 2 bucks, Gouels and ghosts for the genesis for 2, and A nomad and gamegear (with master system converter) for 15. It totally remember seeing those master system games, wanted them, but i didnt have the money for them :l

Dollarama: Shadow of Destiny PC, sealed, $2. This sounded like a great deal though I gather I pretty much paid going price after checking Amazon. I've been wanting to play this for awhile so I'm happy.
I have a loose copy of Shadow of Destiny for the PC. It's really not that good on the PC IMO, the controls are terrible with a keyboard and it ran slow even though the PC I played it on was well above the minimum requirements(even at the lowest settings). It really feels and controls like a console game that was ported to the PC, which it actually is. I was looking forward to playing it and when I finally found a copy I was let down. :(

I got a copy Shaw Brothers: Shadow Whip (http://www.amazon.com/Shaw-Brothers-Shadow-Whip-Special/dp/B000MRA53I) for $2. I've been hankering for a cheesy kung fu flick so I thought this might just hit the spot. An excerpt from the only Amazon review of it is "If you are not careful, you may overdose from all the whip action.". Looks like a good pick LOL

There were not many booths at the local flea market today, since it was pretty cold out. The only other thing I got was a Canon A20 2.1 MP digital camera in decent condition for $4. I'm going to clean it up and if it works correctly it's going to eBay. If broken I'm going to get another "as-is" lot of powershots ready. People who repair these things will buy big lots of broken ones for parts.

That flea market sucks to be honest, too many people making a living off reciprocating the same junk over and over. I prefer the Capitol Swap for better deals. That one vendor though is someone I've dealt with for almost ten years, across multiple flea markets. He used to have a lot more stuff though and a much bigger diverse mix.

But yeah, he's a good guy and gives you a realistic price on everything. I used to drop hundreds almost every week buying from him. These days that's not really an option for me and he really doesn't have the oddball inventory he once had to warrant it anyway. Too many years of picking over his inventory has left it pretty bare from what it once was but he always gets new stuff in.

Also got a shrinked PSP “Silent Hill Experience” ??? for $2.99, a Complete PS2 Sonic Heroes for $2.99 (actually $1.50), and a shrinked GameBoy Color Evil Knievel for $3.99 (actually $1.99).

I bought about 30 DVDs over the last couple of days, the pick of the bunch was Barfly (1987) which can sell for a fair bit of money on Ebay. It's been a little over a month since I last posted something here on DP (I just haven't felt like posting) But I got such a great find today I just had to post it.

Anyway I found this at a local thrift store hidden on a small shelf in such a way that nobody could see in it.

http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/ae341/gamedude45/P1010035-1.jpg

boxed copies of Dr. Mario, Monopoly and Championship Bowling and loose copies of Bible Buffet, Gauntlet II and Skull and Crossbones + a Game Genie.

and an nes with all the hook ups 4 controllers and a four score.

But all this isn't why this was such a good find these are.

Complete boxed copies of Dragon Warrior I,III and IV and a boxed copy of Dragon Warrior II. all this for $25 :D

Now the only question is what to do with the DW games as I have all 4 of them on other systems already. :?

I'll NEVER TELL!! nah, it's down here in Baltimore it's called the Village Thrift Store, I'm not sure if it's part of a chain but it's a very streaky store. sometimes you'll go 6 months without finding anything really good then all of a sudden JACK POT! then it'll go dry again.:-/

I think it's been in somebody attic because when I found it every thing was covered in dust. (I think you can see how dirty the nes four score still is in the pic) so I think someone just cleared out their attic and decided to get rid of those "old dusty nintendo games":)

F-1 Race(GB) factory sealed $4.00
Marvel Vs Capcom(DC) $3.00
Power Stone(DC) $3.00

These were all Goodwill finds. I was surprised to see a factory sealed original Gameboy game there. It's in pretty good condition too but I wish it was something I actually wanted. And when I went back there today they had the two Dreamcast games. For whatever reason the Goodwill's around here have really been getting some quality stock in 2011. In 2010 I'd be lucky to find a decent score once every 4-6 months but this year I find something good pretty much every other week.

Well, not much today... just an oddity.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j238/foxhack/DP/dp-2011-02-07.jpg

A seller brought a ton of original VCDs and a bunch of bootleg DVDs from China. This was among them... It's the 1994 Double Dragon movie with Mark Dacascos, Scott Wolf and Robert Patrick. And it's apparently legit. I already have the movie on DVD (... and the soundtrack... shut up) so what the hell. That was $2.

ETA: Collector Gaming, don't bother with Riven, that's as common as Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt :p

While not as epic as finding a the entire DW quadrilogy boxed @_@ I got this little cache at the Goodwill backlot sale today.

I was walking by one of their boxes of terrible out of date books nobody wants and spied the corner of an NES game box. I dug through it and pulled out what you see here. All of the boxes, with the exception of the one in the corner, are empty although they contain their respective manuals and styrofoam inserts. I think I have loose games to go in all these empty boxes.

And yes that's a minty boxed copy of Mario is Missing. It's going to the collection. Score!

For the boxes I was charged $0.25 a piece and for the boxed Mario is Missing $1.

No pictures, I'm lazy.

Three PHR-250A 2.5" USB hard drive enclosures. Turns out these things aren't even worth $5. Bleh.
Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis, cart only)
Splatterhouse (TG-16, hucard in case with manual)
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure (Korean Mega Drive, cart + case only)

Total for all of that was $23. I'm probably keeping SOR2. Splatterhouse is going to eBay, the HD enclosures were going there too but they don't sell there... I'll probably unload them at GameTZ.

Tiny Toons... I already have the US version. I hope the cart will work with that import adapter I have around.
