I once passed on a beautiful looking Sega Master System with controllers, gun, and a whole box of games for $20. That was back in the days when I was only collecting for the NES. What I dumb mistake that was.
Other regrets include a Virtual Boy with boxed games (not sure which ones) and a handy dandy plastic tote for like $25.
Finally, about four years ago, before I was collecting, a friend tried to sell his Atari 2600 to me for $15. It was in beautiful shape, but I was about to go off to college and I didn't have any spare cash to pick it up. He ended up selling it to another friend. Long story short, the other guy's dorm room flooded and the system got destroyed. That wouldn't be a big shame if one of the carts hadn't have been Swordquest: Waterworld. :o
So the lesson to be learned is, buy anything even vaguely game related or you will most likely regret it later.

Last summer, when I first started collecting, there was a house with at least 100 nes games. They were 3 bucks each. I bet there were some uncommons or rares. But I took what I thought was worth money or fun. I got zelda 2, paperboy, mario is missing, super team games, and mario/duck hunt/track. Then I went back the next week to the persons house to see what they had left. They only had about 29 nes games left, a snes with 10 games, an nes, 10 ps1 games and thats it. So I got the rest for $40 bucks. All the games were commons. I always wonder what other games could have been in there.

I was at a music/game store the other day and in the PSX racks I saw a complete longbox Twisted Metal for $2.50. The tabs on the case weren't broken or anything. I decided to look through the SNES racks and come back. When I got back to the PSX stuff, it was gone. That would have been the first PSX longbox in my collection. Even worse, that's the cheapest I've seen the game go for. It's not too big of a loss, but it would have been cool to own.

Not really something I missed, just some things that I did that I regret:
Keep in mind all this happened way before I started collecting.
My frist system was my Genesis. A few years later, I got a N64 for Xmas. I didnt really play my GEN anymore, so I sold it and all my games. Then, after a few more years happily pass with my N64, I get a Dreamcast. I loved my DC and my N64 immensely. A while more passes, and the new fangled PS2 comes out. I, being the moron that I am, sell all my N64 and DC stuff for a stupid flat box.
I never really played my PS2 much. So, I sold it for some cash, and got a GCN. I so found out that I didnt like this much either. I decided that I liked games much more on my old GEN and DC that either of these next generation consoles.
Thusly, I started retro "collecting." I say that because I love playing the games more than creating a huge collection.
So, because of my stupidity, I have been slowly building back up my GEN and DC libraries, and am now starting a new Saturn collection
Even though I have another Genesis now, It is not the same as having one that came new out of the box, so I know what it has been through. The one I have now is great, just not so reliable.

There really hasn't been too many things over the year that I regret not buying, I have more of a problem with buying stuff I wish I didn't buy, but anywhow, this just happened about 2 months ago and I'm still not over it. Guy at the swap I know had some copies one weekend, really old and in awesome shape. I always pick up really old books that I know well, spiderman, superman, x-men , etc. but didn't always remember to carry around a price guide. Anyhow he's showing about 10 books to one guy and I'm bummed cause they're all .12centers and I figured he was definitly gonna buy em. Guy still has em the next week and I'm thinking damn, if he still has em they must not be worth too much, he wouldn't sell less than 5 bux though so I grabbed the 9 out of 10 I knew were worth cash, I was thinking Sgt. fury and his howling cammondos? It may be #1 but it's not worth sh*t. I go home and look online, I passed up a 1000 dollar comic book... AHHHHH @_@

I got all of you beat badly. I was no older than 8 at the time, looking through a stack of NES games at a flea market. I saw (I promise you) a gray copy of the 1990 Nintendo World Championships cartridge. The games were all $5 US each, but since it wasn't Zelda (which I was into at the time), and didn't look "real" (i.e. licensed), I didn't get it. You think you guys are kicking yourself? I'm kicking a friggin' 90-yard field goal with myself! If only I had bought it, I'd be one of only about 100-110 people who own that game, and it would be the best single purchase I ever made. *kicks 90-yard field goal*

I too, saw the $10 final fantasy games at wal-mart. luckily i bought one :) (was into ff3 at the time) wish i woulda bought more.
here's a kicker tho. about a year and a half ago, i threw out about 30 nes boxes, and 15 snes boxes. i was moving and decided i didn't have the room for them. 2 months later, i start collecting. nothing too rare, but alot of good commons (super metroid, metal gear, contra) luckily i kept my ff1 and ff3 boxes out of nostalgia. good thing is that led me to the decision to NOT collect boxes, which has saved me lots of $$$.
2 weeks ago i passed a $8 snes (yellowed) with 2 con., rf, ac. i think i shoulda got it and sold it.
i remember seeing lots of 2600 games for $1 at flea markets when nes was popular. i'm talking hundreds and hundereds of them. but i was probably 10 or 12 years old at the time, i know there had to be some rares in there.
I passed up a few boxed Tengen games for $5 each at a Babbages. Later I ended up getting most of the Tengen NES games, though I am missing boxes.
Another thing, not related to buying videogames, but related to videogames nonetheless. I had an oppurtunity to dump an unreleased NES game, Cue Stick. Since I do not have a rom dumper, I told the owner that I wasn't able to dump it for him. A day or so later, I wrote him again and suggested that I get someone I knew to dump the game. Unfortunately, at this time the seller had already sold/traded the game (funny he wasn't willing to sell/trade it to me) to another NES collector, who hasn't seemed too keen on releasing the rom to the public.

In 1998 while shopping at Walmart with friends I saw a complete brand new Earthbound for $14, I didn't have any cash on me so I went home to bum some money off of mom, she decides not to so she can teach me the value of money. ?!
In that same year a couple months before the Earthbound thing my local babbages had a import copy of Castlevania SoTN for the Saturn, I did have enough money for it but I put off buying it the whole summer until I forgot about it. By the time I did remember, 2 years later, the only Saturn games they had were used, no trace of import games anywhere.
In 1997 the local kay-bee toys had a Jaguar bundle with a game for $20 and they had one left. I wanted to get it but the cashier actually talked me out of buying it.
These games I regret trading, all boxed and complete:
Mega Man X2
Secret of Mana
Breath of Fire
I traded the Mega Man X2 for a boxed copy of NBA Jam TE, worst trade ever. My brother traded off my complete boxed Secret of Mana and Breath of Fire for random SNES games because he was bored of them. I have no idea why I let him and I smack myself everytime I think about it.

So many things to feel sorry for myself over...
1. $20 Jag CD at Wal Mart. This was in the period when you could get new Jag units for $10 and all the games for $5 each (from VGLQ and many other places.) I actually asked the electronics lady if she could lower the price (I figured clearance items could be priced at the store's discretion), and she told me that they had just lowered it to $20, and wouldn't go any lower.
I said "Fine!" and walked away. Certainly it would be down to $10 in a week or two.
Of course, the next time I went back, they were all gone.
At that point, I decided that I REALLY wanted a Jag CD, so I went online...only to find that even VGLQ (who was the cheapest by far) was asking $70+ for their Jag CD units!
2. 2 X'Eye units at the local pawn shops, $20 each. I saw one, and I passed it up for months on end, expecting it to go down to $10 or $15 (go figure). Eventually they sold it, and I kicked myself over it.
Here's where I turn into a fucking idiot: Within a week of this happening, ANOTHER X'eye turned up at a pawn shop about a mile from the first one. I figure it's the same one, only the owner probably found out it was defective or someting. It's also priced at $20. I decided to wait until it's priced as defective ($5-$10). It sells a week later. Out of curiosity, I ask the pawn shop guy about it. "Where did you get that Xeye?" I'm expecting him to say "Oh, this guy brought it in about a week ago." What he tells me is that it was actually PAWNED a month or two ago, and never picked up. So they put it out for sale. Two different X'eyes, $20 each. None for me.
[Heartwarming tale of redemption]
The saving grace here is that six years later (which would be last year), I managed to come across another X'Eye, right here in little bitty Hutchinson. This one was boxed (good box!) and complete (Prizefighter and Comption's included), and even had a pair of microphones and some karaoke discs in the box. $30. I moved so fucking fast that they are still viewing my afterimage today, a full year later.
3. All three Panesian NES games, from a Hastings store here in town. Technically this was not my fault, but it still hurts. My cousin and I rented all three games from Hastings, so we knew they were there. I suppose if we had known how much those games would be worth and how rare they were, we would have simply "lost" them. But we didn't, and we didn't.
Anyway, I went in the store one day, and noticed a decent amount of NES games for SALE. This had not happened before, except with the occasional overstocked rental title. It seemed suspicious, so I went to the NES rental section. It was gone. They had cleared out ALL of the NES games, and the ones I saw were the only ones left.
I asked an employee how long they had been for sale, and he told me it was only a couple of days. Which means that, had I visited a day or two earlier, I would have gotten all three Panesian games for $2.49 each, box and instructions included.
The worst part is that even at that time, I was not aware of just how rare they were or their $$$ value. I knew they were porn NES games, and they were funny as hell, and I'd never seen them before. That's why I wanted them so bad. It was only a few years later that I found out their true value, and I kicked myself even harder for missing out on them.
Now, there is a strange ending to this incident. A little less than a year later, I was in Overland Park (part of Kansas City), visiting my cousin Mike. As usual, we went game hunting. In a game store right across the street from Oak Park mall and right next to TRU, we found a copy of Hot Slots! The only problem was that it was $20. We debated about it for awhile, and I was pissed that I missed out on the ones at Hastings, but we still decided to pass on it. It was funny and probably rare, but that $20 would snag many other cheap NES games.
In the next two years (yes, two years), I visited Mike six or seven times. Everytime we would go game hunting, and every time we would look at that copy of Hot Slots, debate about it, then decide to buy cheaper games. $20.
If you haven't caught on yet, it's almost unbelievable to think about now, but it's true. A $20 copy of Hot Slots sat in a prime location game store in KANSAS CITY for two years (actually a little more).
You're probably expecting me, at this point, to tell you how the next time we went, it was gone.
Well, I'm very happy to NOT say that.
What happened was that my first copy of the DP guide (fifth ed, I think) finally arrived. I looked through, started checking off the games I had, and at some point noticed the rarity and value ratings for Hot Slots. I called Mike that freaking instant, and told him to drop everything he was doing and go get Hot Slots! He complained that it was $20, and I just told him that it's "mega fucking rare" and to GO GET IT!
He went to the game store.
He called me back.
They still had it.
He got it.
So that's how we got Hot Slots, despite my cheap-ass idiocy. Hopefully that makes up (somewhat) for missing out on the three games at Hastings.

The other 9 books were descent but nothing crazy at all, I don't really member off hand right now, something fantasy #1, worth about 100.00 , Iron man #12, Death of super bagged (black) (always wanted this issue as a kid) , a bunch of other silver age comics worth 40-60 dollars, I'll probably be kicking myself forever on this one

All I can say is thank god I'm not the only one kicking themselves over passing up good deals. So far I have a....few....good deals I have passed on due to lack of funding or not realizing how good they would be later on.
finding 12 copies of Lufia 2 for 10$ a peice brand new at target.
passing on most of the TG-16 games when toys-r-us had them on sale for 5$ a peice.
passing up 20 copies of kings field 1 & 2 when they were 6$ each at k-mart.
passing up on a top loader NES and 12 games for 50$ at a pawn shop.
passing up a GEN3 at same pawn shop for same price and same game count.
not buying up every single copy of thousand arms when it came out and a local wal-mart priced them wrong at 15$.
Am I kicking myself? I most certainly am.

I don't know how much N64 converters go for these days (I just melted the tabs out of my system), but I wouldn't feel too bad about Wonder Project J2. It's gotten dirt cheap. I bought a used complete copy for $14 a couple years ago, and then shortly later I bought 10 brand new copies in the manufacturer's box for $9.99. o_O I don't know the story behind it, but for some reason there were a ton of copies in manufacturer's boxes that never even got put out for sale. I guess they produced far more than they sold. When I sold my used copy I only got 5 bucks for it.

In late 2001 I was wandering around in Seiden (an electronics chain) in Kobe, Japan. I came across a display of this new game "Rez" for the PS2. Put on the special-edition force-feedback headphones, pressed start, and woke up from my LSD-like daze only when a buddy of mine forcibly took the headphones off my head to let me know that he was going. They had several of these special edition packages available, and I can't recall the exact price, but it was around 10,000 yen or so (roughly $100). I considered picking it up, but thought I might as well just wait for the U.S. release (as I didn't have a Region 2 PS2 at the time). Come to find out they only made several hundred of those special edition packages with the headphones. Doh!

I've done some idiotic things in the past, and passed up some excellent deals: (note: all prices in canadian dollars...)
1. About 20 new-in-box top loader NES systems at K-Mart, for $20. I wanted to buy four or five, but my parents told me I all ready had a regular NES so didn't need these. Arrgh!
2. Roughly 50 unopened Ninja Gaiden Trilogy for SNES, at $5 each in Toys 'R Us. I bought none, as I was broke.
3. New-in-box Virtual Boy for $10 from Microplay.
And now for the crown-jewel, the epitome of idiocy:
4. Around 100 sealed-in-box Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy IIIs, at a Canadian Tire, for $1.99 each. I all ready owned them, so my friends said "what's the point". Me, being a moron, listened to them. That's painful.

Well, it's not that bad but I still regret it...
Back when I was younger and videogame systems were things you had to save up for a long time for.. I was walking around TRU and saw a row of SNES model 2 + Yoshi Island bundles for $40 a piece.
Not a huge deal but I still don't have my minty boxed snes :/
I make sure to buy any system that hits $50 brand new now (ala dreamcast)

I didn't really regret this that much...but it is the only thing I can think of.
I went to the local pawn shop once and they had a bunch of PSX longbox games complete and in very good condition for 4.99 each. The games included: Gex, Twisted Metal, Road Rash 3D, Darkstalkers, Mortal Kombat 3, and a couple of others...but I forget what they were. I have three major regrets.
I saw Panzer Dragoon Saga in Software etc. one time and thought $70 was to much, now I'd gladly go back and pay that for it.
I saw Super Puzzle Fighter II for the Saturn for $30 and thought "That's just to much, and it's used too, it'll drop and I'll get it later!"
Finally I saw Breath of Fire II for the SNES at $70 and I thought to myself "I waited on BOF and it dropped this will drop too." It dropped alright, right off the shelf and in someone elses home.

It's not quite as "own-ass-kickingly" bad as most people here, but eh, it's the best I can do... when I started collecting (isn't that most of these start?) I saw Contra Force loose at the local junk store / pawn shop for $4. Passed on it, figured I'd get it the next week, and it wasn't there. I know it's not a great game, but I haven't come across it in the wild since. That was about 7 years ago. Just one I think of.
I suppose I could also include not buying up the games from the local video stores when they were selling them off in 96-97 but I wasn't actively collecting then so... meh.

At one garage sale, there was a box with an snes system, super scope, and about 20 to 30 games for $20.
Also my mom gave all my nes games to my cousin when my nes stopped working. It was like 50 games some rare ones. when i got my nes back working again i asked my cousin if he still had the games, and he tells me him and his friend tried to combine an snes genesis and nes into one system and broke all 3 systems and his mom threw out all the systems and games.
Also some kid around the corner from from threw out like 30 sega master system games and i picked them up. Then I went somewhere for the weekend and my mom decides to clean my room and throws all the games out.

I skipped out on a complete MBR/SR game at this garage sale. Ive also seen a silver zelda, and a boxed chrono trigger for 20$ back when I was like 9. Too bad I was mainly interested in racing games and whatnot at that age :(

Iunno it was a shiny silver cart. Maybe fake or spray painted?

When the local Bradlee's closed there was an original GameBoy stand up display (like an arcade machine) with 4 gameboys; one on each side. It was mega badass, and they wanted I think $25 for it... but I just passed on it.

I passed up a Panzer Dragoon Saga several years ago for $45. This was shortly after the death of the Saturn, and I thought it was too high a price for a used game. Now it easily sells for over $100 on eBay... Ouch!

I saw a loose copy of Earthbound for $10 once in 2000. In 2001, a Zellers and a Toys r Us had Suikoden II on sale reduced in price. Should have bought a copy, damn........ :(

I have few regrets, but the ones I regret most are:
Not bidding and the Limited Edition of REZ (the one w/ headphones). It went for $300 US, I would pay almost twice that now.
Not buying WorldImageSoundPlay from Play-Asia for $58 US. I paid $200 for it just the other day. ><
Spending $1000 for a JP PSP at launch on eBay. Yeah, that was stupid.
I remember seeing tons of NES games at a dollar store years ago...:/ and I remember seeing a huge stack of SMS 2s at a KB Toys outlet.
I'm going to go cry now.

Kiko's Flying Squadron for Sega CD at some store for about 25 dollars, If I knew where the hell that store was I would go back and buy it ASAP.

Two months ago at the Goodwill store I passed on a NES with about 30 games for $50. One of the games was Bubble Bobble 2

I don't have many regrets of not buying something, but i do regret not buying some complete Atari 5200 games for $3 each. They were commons, but..

I think my worse one was last night. I just started building a collection of NES games and I see on ebay Dr.Mario the NES version with it's orignal box instructions and cartridge and they looked to be in great condition and it was only 13 bucks I can't believe I did not buy that.

Oh great i just remembered one of my biggest regrets. it isn't as bad as some of the ones i see on here, but it was retarded to not buy it.
A boxed, maybe COMPELTE Nintendo 64 (Star wars racer bundle)
It came with LOADS OF GAMES, aswell! Among them were Conker & mario 64, I don't remember most of the games, but there had to be over 20 games there, most of them would probably turn a profit by trading to EB!
Price for all? $30.
Instead, i bought the boxed 1989 genesis that they had for $15, with 15 games, 7 games wich i had.
And guess what, the RFU and controller don't work.
Why didn't i buy the N64? I thought it was too expensive! And this was last year, and i was collecting then!
Lesson learned: NEVER pass up boxed systems. unless the price is higher than ebay's prices.

When I was a wee lad, maybe 7 or 8, my village church had a fund raising auction. There was a SNES with quite a few games. My friend bought it all for £1. That would be like getting a PS2 and some games for £1 now.
I remember wishing dad would buy it without me saying anything. Alas, he probably thought I was spoiled enough with a Megadrive, let alone with a £2 SNES as well!
I regret trading in all of my PS1 games when I bought my PS2. I only got £2-3 each for 12 games. Now some of them are worth £10-15.

Let's see here:
Not buying Final Fight Guy when it was $5 at Blockbuster.
Not buying Indiana Jones for the N64 when it was at BB for $15.
Not buying Chrono Trigger for $15 at a local store.
I've made up for those by snagging a lot of 50 cent Genesis and SNES gems, but those are still my biggest regrets.

Last winter, I passed on a C64 with a bunch of games at Goodwill. After I got home, I realized that I had made a poor choice in not picking it up. I tried going back the next day but my car died on the way there. It was several days before I had it on the road again.
When I finally made it back there two weeks later, it was all gone. There was nothing rare in the lot. However, it would have been nice to pick up a "better" C64 than the banged up one that I currently own.
Awhile back, I also passed on a couple of common TG16 titles. The reason at the time was I did not own the console. Neither of the games were worth any real money but might have made good trade bait on the forums.
Aside from that, there isn't anything recently that I regret not picking up.

When I worked at FYE, someone had traded in a copy of Persona for PS1, and of course, FYE doesn't take anything but mint games so it was pristine. Of course, at the time, I wasn't a PS1 fan and I didn't know anything about Shin Megami Tensei at the time, but I wish I hadn't just handed it over to a customer for him to purchase. It was only $9.99.
And there is a copy of Marvel vs. Street Fighter for Saturn that I keep planning to go back and buy from an independent shop I know of but I have yet to do it.

A couple updates to my previous posts in the thread:
A few weeks ago, I saw R-Type III for SNES at Game Crazy for $3.99. I passed up on it, who knows why. I eventually came to the decision to buy it. A few days ago, I went back to the store, and it was gone.
I wound up getting this a couple months after I made the post for $6.
-Passed up a loose Arrow Flash (Genesis) at a GameCrazy for 99 cents. At least I snagged the loose Extreme-G 2 (N64) that was mispriced at 99 cents ($4.99 was the correct price).I eventually got Arrow Flash for $2.50.

About a year ago, I was at a used game shop in Green Bay. I was looking inside the glass display case and saw a cart-only 'Bubble Bobble 2' for the NES. They were selling it for only $15. But, I passed it up because I "wasn't in the market" for NES games at that moment. If only I knew how rare it actually was then... :frustrated:
Stupidly passed up a CIB 'Shadowrun' for the Genesis. Price -- $3
Ignored a cheap-ass Vectrex unit one day.
Defiantly refused to purchase Lucio Fulci's 'The Beyond' in the limited edition tin-case, mint condition, for the low price of $20. Only 20,000 of these exist --anywhere-- and they usually go for over $100 on a good day.
Passed up the opportunity to purchase 'Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 2' (XBOX) for $20 from a local GameCrazy. Of course, when I went back the week after... it was gone.
Decided not to purchase a *brand new* Atari Jaguar proudly sitting on the shelf behind the register at the KB Toys outlet. I believe that it priced around $30-40. But, I was "not in the market" for such things at the time... :frustrated:
You know what? I still get pissed about passing these deals up when I look over this list!

Toys R Us clearanced out Phoenix Wright for $5 and I saw about 30 of them at the store closest to me, I bought 3 at the time and those three sold within a day at $30 a piece before shipping (easy $20 profit on each), I went back the next day and all of them were gone except for one that was misplaced in a different area. I could've easily netted an extra $500 for only a little work (I'm assuming someone else is enjoying that extra money though). Now I know to buy first and then if it comes down to it just return it later if it doesn't sell. I also guess thats what I get for taking all 13 copies of RE: Code Veronica X for GC that were clearanced at a local store for $3.75 each (at least I made a good $300 off those).

PAL Batman and Robin for the Sega CD. About 2€ or something (no cash and didnt bother to borrow some from a friend) Worth about 150€ as I later found out.
