N64 for me too i am afraid as even when i purchased my own back in the day i felt there were no more than maybe 6 or 7 good games for it,i have played a vectrex and love the wireframe vector graphics and in arcade games but thats all that is good about the console as i found the games mostly dreadfull so i have no wish to play that anymore.
Finally an i am sorry to say this but once i have finished with Aliens Vs Predator the Atari Jag will be added to the list too.

N64:Never liked it's controller and how most of it's good games were third party.
PS1:To a point it's 3D titles haven't aged well visually while it's 2D is good still.

I don't really have any desire to play any old system(no time) ..when I get the time it's either playing an Xbox 360 game/with my kids(PS3-Wii is collecting dust, not that I don't like them just no time to play multiple systems) ..Or I play something Arcade or Pinball..
But since I do a lot of buying and selling of old systems and games...once I hook up an old system to try a game I enjoy it..I actually have had more fun with games buying and selling them then in my Collecting days...I'll play an old game I'm selling and Really Have a BLAST with it,discovering something I missed.
.I believe because I was trying to build such a huge collection, getting so much stuff at times that I didn't have the time to Enjoy the games I was buying..
I don't collect like I used to,I keep this and that, specifics, games that I know I will play again or unique titles..
I am not into roms, emulation,I have no idea on what is what with that type stuff but I can tell you I have had the most fun messing with games I've had, never played, never seen nor heard of that are loaded on this thing...I am having fun playing old games again..
I was going to do a long reply too, but this one here almost is exactly how I am outside of having kids. Yet, I do play roms and emulations on my PSP of games that I really love like the SNES Legend of Zelda or something I've missed out on until recently like Genesis Castlevania Bloodlines, even though I do have them on cart in my collection it's far more convenient on my PSP than to hook up the systems and to use vintage old game enhancers with limited code input and no memory storage or save states.
If I had to chose a system that I know I would never start up again it would be the Game Gear. I just cannot see the games on that GG screen. Perhaps all the systems went bad over the years, but every one I've encountered was bleached out white and the screen scuffed up to hell. Even if I could find a decent system to play on, I've yet to find a game that is really worth playing on the GG. Megaman perhaps which is just a port+ and I have a Pengo because I'm old enough to remember it at the arcade, but nothing really killer exciting. They all seem to suck. I'm not a Sonic fan, so if you take away Sonic what else is there that people love on the GG?
My second choice would be the Odyssey². I bought the thing at a garage sale as I do feel as a true gamer that I must own one of every game system, but I never enjoyed the thing. I wish I could get rid of it, but it's so damned large that I'd never find a proper box to ship the thing out to anyone. I am old enough to remember the second generation well, but for some reason the Odyssey² escaped me. I never knew it existed until I bought mine at a garage sale in the late 90s. The kids in the neighborhood and I had stuff like Atari 2600/Intellivision/Colecovision, so what was an Odyssey²? Those other systems I can barely play today just to remember the good old days, but the Odyssey² has none of that for me and it just seems awful to play. I've not fired mine up for at least 10 years I do believe.

I'd probably say Atari 2600. When I was a kid we had a Coleco, then I went from there to NES. Some of my friends had Ataris, but never us.
I actually did have some fun with one I got from Secret Santa a few years ago for a few weeks... but now the Atari lives on a coworker's desk and he plays with it more than I ever would - because it was HIS childhood system. I didn't really get into many of the games on 2600.
We AV modded it too so he can use on his monitor :D

I have been finding that people who don't enjoy games from the ancient era favor games that have more "depth" games with a beginning and an acute end… Games from the earliest days really are more or less, infinite… the thing that keeps most folks returning to those games are the score mechanics… these games are really played for score, and the continuous play of such games are to continue to improve scoring…
As for the 2600, most games I really do have a hard time to get into, as I find more enjoyment playing improved versions on Atari's later consoles such as the 5200 and 7800… but there are still a handful of games on the 2600 which keep me playing it today…
Kaboom! it's one game that is pure addiction and best played on proper hardware with proper paddle controllers…

Atari 5200.
The controllers never worked right and no exclusive games.
I Have to agree with you on that. I Still can't believe people were saying "Dreamcast, N64 And PS1"
I Love all of those systems!

Saturn. Had one for a while, really liked it, but I played the games I wanted to play on it (PD Saga, Dragon Force). I don't see myself ever getting another one, although it is a great console. Also, the Bally Astrocade. I pulled mine out of the closet once every 5 years, played it for a day and that's it. I finally sold it on eBay a couple months ago.
I do still play PS1 games from time to time - for some games the early 3D is a bit jarring at first but you get used to it. There are also a lot of emulator packs and more 2D-ish types of games.
To each their own, but I'm really surprised by peoples' responses here.

N64? Dreamcast? PSX?
Despite being anti Nintendo, the good games that the N64 has are some of the best games ever developed. Amazing console if you're a fan of multiplayer with some friends over, as well as some, although very few, great single player games.
Unfortunately for the Dreamcast, most of its best games have been ported to other consoles, such as Phantasy Star Online, Grandia 2, Skies of Arcadia, Crazy Taxi, Dead or Alive 2, Resident Evil Code Veronica, among others. It's got some great exclusives(and ports) Shenmue, Dynamite Cop, Sword of the Berserk Gut's Revenge, Carrier, Soul Reaver(which looks better than the PSX version,) etc. For having a very small library it's certainly got a lot of great games.
The PSX is the single greatest console of all time, only bested by the PS2 and PS3 if you were to take backwards compatibility into consideration. While being the greatest console of all time is opinion only, you can't deny that there aren't games that you like unless you just haven't played them. If you're an RPG fan then it's easily the best console of all time, but I could list atleast 100 great games for the console that aren't even in the RPG genre.
--
If it's not current or last gen, I don't play the game on its native console. So really, any past console I own I have no desire to play again because I play all games through emulation.

I prefer SNES. If you include Super Famicom games, I feel the system easily trumps the PlayStation in RPGs, but even if you don't, the small selection of US RPGs includes some of the best RPGs ever made, in my opinion. PlayStation may have a lot to pick from, but very few come close to the quality of stuff like Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and Lufia II.

As far as 2600 being on people's list....that is a system that gets played weekly in our house. We have family game night and always end up playing MAZE CRAZE, SLOT RACERS, INDY 500, WARRING WORMS, and a bunch of great homebrews!
The 2600 really is a lot more fun when playing against someone. In fact, that is were the system shines. Tell me Maze Craze doesn't get your competitive juices flowin' ????
:) You'd bring a smile to Nolan Bushnell with that post. If you read or watch interviews with him, it is the bringing together of people and families to play video games, much like a board game, that he wanted to achieve with video games. You are more than right about the 2600 rocking with two players. Some of those games are incredible, despite their simplicity, when you are going head to head. I love Combat and Air Battle in particular. I own a stand alone Atari Pong unit that my girlfriend actually enjoys playing against me with.

If you ran for President of Video Games, you would have my vote and undying support! I love Wolfenstein and Doom. I use to like James Bond and Perfect Dark for the N64, but their appeal is gone for me now.
I blame Halo for the FPS scourge. The game itself is not bad, per se; it is the after effect that I resent as FPS are a cancer that spreads and kills anything else in the video game market.* I have younger friends who can play nothing but FPS games because, to them, that is what video games are. So very sad. On top of them crapping on the game market, they are also marketing tools for the United States military, which would not be such a bad thing if the US was less neo-imperialistic in our world affairs.
*Yes, yes. I am using a bit of hyperbole, but there is a truth to this overly dramatic analogy, unfortunately.

The Saturn was a nice upgrade coming from a Genesis to play for a year or two, but the PSOne had the better graphics and superior library and seemed to be everyones main system for 1998 along with the N64. I remember reading magazine in 97 and just seeing the Saturn die out each issue with lowering prices and with less and less reviews.
I Know alot of legendary RPG'S are for the Saturn, but the controller was always inferior IMHO and the graphics looked noticably subpar if u came from having a PSONE first.

I'll never say never, but I doubt I would ever desire to buy another RCA Studio II. Everything else has at least 1 game I was ok with. I think a lot of the seldomly played stuff is ready to get sold off though. I got the stuff because I wanted to experience it and try it out. Well, that has been done so why is it still here? I don't have room for this stuff. Even if I get a house someday, that's a lot of dusting to do too.
I have grown unattached to much of my collection now. I almost wish I didn't have anything, but had a ton of money and could just fully enjoy things one by one. Then I remember how hard it will be to find a few of these and choose to keep the games at least until I beat them. I was more excited to get Atari games when I didn't have one and missed having the console.
I think the only one game I definitely care about keeping is the copy of Ms. Pac-Man for Genesis that my grandma who raised me and I shared. It's the only game of mine she really played and it brings back memories. I even sold it at a game store once, but the copy sat on the shelf for 2 and a half years and I was able to buy it back for cheap. I could tell it was the same one because of the way the cartridge rattled and the faint white crayon marking on the game's case.

Mine served me well as a bargain bin phone, but every time I'd use it for games, I would find myself frustrated at the obvious and baffling design flaws.

Playstation 1 and 2, the Original Xbox, Anything pre NES, maybe even the NES itself, the Master System, The original Gameboy.
Your response pains me to read. My brother and I play Tekken 3 on our PSone about once a week, and we play Star Wars Battlefront 1 and 2 on our Xbox every other week. My friend and I still spend hours over his house every day when we come home from school (we are in middle school) playing Ratchet and Clank and Sly Cooper on his PS2, and quite a lot of time playing our original monochrome gameboys through link cable too. I play Master System for ALEX KIDD! My other friend and I play his Atari 2600 on the weekends for hours. Most importantly, my NES is like a brother too me and all my friends. Me and my friend actually just finished playing Battletoads on my NES about 10 minutes ago when he had to go back to his house. Your response is burning my retnas. Please re-visit these systems and then make a concious post. Good day to you sir, good day.

Interesting to see everyone's opinions. As for myself, I don't hate any system, but there are definitely systems I'd be okay with never playing again. Atari 5200 just doesn't do anything for me, I love the 7800 though. I didn't enjoy the CD-i and sold it. The dated graphics of the first "3D" consoles are a little hard to get past at times, but there are enough good games for the N64, PS1 and Saturn to make it worth while. I never get tired of Paper Mario, Brave Fencer Musashi or Astal respectively. There are at least a game or two on most systems that make me break them out of storage now and then.

Nintendo 64, in spite of finally having one set up after 5+ years of half-hearted attempts I completely lack the desire to buy those 2 Zelda carts and will probably sell both systems next week after pretending to give a damn. The Sega 32x might also qualify but at least I don't plan to sell it.

I can see why people wouldn't want to go back and play that 32 bit era stuff early era 3D is rough. But once you get past the initial shock I've been having a great time lately playing ps1 and n64 games it's like a time machine i just picture myself back in 97 and remember how awesome the games looked at the time. They kind of have a charm to them, and the N64 is even better since it was 64 bit and the games were a lot smoother looking. And i love watching the old cut scenes on so many PS1 titles.

...i just picture myself back in 97 and remember how awesome the games looked at the time. They kind of have a charm to themIt's interesting...I honestly felt the exact opposite. In 1997 I thought that most of the games looked HORRIBLE. Like pixelated messeds...tech demos, and little more. By and large, I found the games of that generation to be utterly lacking in charm, something I felt 2D games generations before had in spades.
There were plenty of exceptions, of course. Games like Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Panzer Dragoon II: Zwei, Tempest 2000 and NiGHTS into Dreams were, and are still, some of my favorite games. But I felt that they were just that, exceptions, not the rule.

Or if I was actually impressed with playing in cloudy, mucky, poorly rendered 3D environments versus beautiful 2D sprites.
I don't mean to discredit your (and practically everyone's) enthusiasm for the technical advances of early 32-bit games. I totally understand why gamers were taken by the new 3D dynamic. Technically, it was pretty amazing stuff after all; I just think most companies struggled to make good 'games' with the new technology. I think you're right in that Nintendo's offerings were superior to a lot of what their competitors were doing. Visually, I think that there's early stuff bridged the gap better than most. Their games still seemed very "gamey", if you can understand what I mean.

if you don't mine me asking how old are you? Because if you are younger and didn't grow up with the evolution of the graphics then yes you will absolutely not appreciate it. My first console was the Atari 2600, and I've followed gaming every year since, which is what I meant when I talked about not being that impressed with the early 32-bit 3D offerings because of the 2 generations between it and the 2600. I've seen the evolution of gaming up to that point, so it wasn't so huge a leap to me from pseudo3D games of the 16-bit platform (like Starfox, Soul Star, F-Zero, Virtua Fighter, Zaxxon2000 Motherbase, etc.) to the 32-bit ones, as it would be if I skipped them and used the 2600 as a comparative point.
The novelty of 3D worlds, for me, didn't offset the ugliness of those early games, and I just didn't find them all that fun, either. I'll agree though that Nintendo probably did the best job of bridging early 3D technology with classic 'fun' game play. And while Nintendo64 games were also blocky and foggy as hell, many looked a lot better than most of what the other guys were doing.

^the only games to my mind which didn't have that "blocky and ugly" look were the cartoony ones, like Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and Diddy Kong Racing. Ogre Battle is also beautiful, but it used sprites, not 3D, so that didn't count.

I think that in an experimental sort of way the 32 bit era served its purpose of showing how the 3D could be handled. I think the first time 3d was done very well was dreamcast IMO. granted, i know that was a bit later, but I think thats when the 3d aspect of gaming was fully realized. I don't really like comparing it to the N64 or PS1 due to the difference in time, but this was how I saw it back then:
Tony Hawk for PS1: Really grainy and angular, but the soundtrack is pretty could.
Tony Hawk for N64: Looking a lot better, a bit smoother, but why do I ony have 5 songs, and only half of them
Tony Hawk for DC: Better graphics than the n64 and a full soundtrack.
and to answer the original topic: Game Gear, I had one as a child, the backlit scren was good, but battery life sucked and the library was severely lacking. I always ended up playing my gameboy more.

I've had the N64 so many times since it came out I can't count. And every single time I try to keep it and enjoy it and although there are some games that I do like, I don't like them enough to keep the system and play it.
Same thing with Dreamcast, I was given one (won it in an online youtube contest actually) but hardly ever played it. Not many games on the system that appealed to me aside from Crazy Taxi.
For those that don't like the Atari 5200 - get the 800XL or one of the line of Atari 8-bit computers - same games for the most part and you don't have to put up with the crappy 5200 controllers.

Game Gear. I think I got mine in 1995 with 5 or 6 games, the only ones I remember are Shinobi, X-Men, and Riddick Bowe Boxing. It is the only gaming item I do not regret selling or giving away. I still have my copy of X-Men only because I couldn't find it when I sold the GG and found it at the bottom of a box in the garage a few months ago.
I would probably buy one if I found it in the wild for $10 or less, but I'm pretty sure I would never actively search for one.

At least you can use a different controller.
There's no cure for the mind-blowingly awful design decisions of the Ngage.
I owned the QD for a few years, and although it's sufficiently powerful and has some great games, the awful sideways screen and lazy button layout was just not suited to the system's library. If it had gotten some vertical shooters and had proper buttons, I could look past any other flaws, I suppose.
I can't imagine how bad the original design would have been.

Something I have not seen mentioned upon scanning this forum is the Mattel Hyperscan. A Crappy console made in 2007 In which had 5 games (Most being crappy fighters) and you need the cards to play the games as well. Got it for Christmas and I Hated it.

Which consoles would I happily never play again? There aren't many. Hell, even my 3DO has games that warrant a repeat playthrough. Probably the only one I'd happily see the back of is the game.com. Never really had anything going for it.

I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but I don't really want to go back to my old SNES and Genesis after discovering the wonderful world of clone consoles. A part of it is due to accessibility; now that I have an FC-16 Go and a GenMobile I can play at anytime, anywhere, it makes me less eager to want to go back to the original hardware, but a part of it is also the novelty and efficiency of it.
I like playing on shiny new hardware (especially when it has a modern look and feel to it) like my Retro Duo and clones are a nice way for me to experience the feeling of getting a new console without all the added expense and hassle of finding new games for it. It's something I obviously can't get from playing the on the same systems I've had since I was a child, and while it seems minor, it usually seems well worth it.
The awful three-pronged controller and bulky, heavy unit turns me away from the N64, but I do have a desire to go back to some of the games themselves. I haven't played any of my consoles in a good while since lately most of my playtime's been between the three handhelds (FC-16, GenMobile, and DS Phat). Kind of makes me wish there were portable clones of each system.

I kept seeing this thread and thinking I should post Game.Com, and then offer to sell my collection. Which stands, by the way...
But honestly, the Sega Saturn. I don't know why either, as I can appreciate a lot of the interesting stuff on there, and I like the controllers, but for whatever reason when I went to make a testing station for the GOAT Store and managed to cram game consoles of pretty much every type that we carry, I realized I was short on space, and the Saturn was the first to go. I have hooked up and can honestly say that I play the 3DO and Jaguar more, as well as the N64 and Dreamcast. I have a PS1 handy too, and even have an entire longbox collection for the PS1.
But, for whatever reason, I cannot get into the Saturn at all. I'm not denying it's great, and I know a bunch of collectors swear by it, but something about it doesn't click with me.
Here's another odd thing for me -- I collected the PS1 long box collection because I love the way the games look, although I don't think I have played more than a handful of them (yes, seriously). The Saturn games look basically the exact same, but I have no interest in collecting those. Tempest 2000 is where my Saturn collection begins and ends.
Weird.

Game Gear. Never really had any games I was interested in and the games I did have were frustrating as hell. With the possible exceptions of Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble & Sonic Labyrinth. I will admit there is some quality music on the Game Gear.

I don't think I have any desire to play any hand helds again. I have no time when I am out of the house to play portable games and when I'm home I can play something full size. I would however play some of the games on something like a super gameboy.

Xbox 360 - I'm not a PS fanboy or anything, I just don't see myself paying for online play. If you're not on xbox live then I can't see any reason to play it. I loved the original xbox, but after setting up my avatar on the 360 and playing a Metal slug trial, I have never turned it back on. I'm more of a classic gamer anyways.

Without online play, some important shmups were released exclusively for the 360. I can't verify their quality, since I don't even own a 360, but it'd be a reason to look into getting one for me (I too am a Classic gamer).

Reading through this whole thread, I think it's crazy to see how many people are listing systems like N64 and PSX. Really? I am decidedly not a fan of N64, and it's easily my least favorite "major" post-crash console (major meaning excluding stuff like Jaguar). But even so, it still has its share of greats. And PSX is one of the best systems of all time.
I don't really get why people say early 3D games were ugly. I'm not saying they're not, but, early 2D games were just as ugly.

The 2600 stuff was, yeah, but after that not so much. They also have a timeless feel to them that the early 3D games don't have.

Sega Genesis.
I actually owned one for a while, but gave it back (after repairing it).
The whole 16-Bit era just didn't interest me at all.

I would compare 2600 era graphics to very early 3D stuff like Hard Drivin'. Colecovision and 5200 are more like 3DO/Jaguar/32x. And NES compares to PSX.

Seems to me most guys who bash on the early 3d systems/games are older hardcore 2d 8bit guys who are aged 35 and older. A lot of those guys scoffed and turned their nose up when 3d came on scene in the early to mid 90's. too bad, they missed out, I personally think anything before NES is pretty trashy when it comes to a video game esperience. 2600 games, just plain ugly and simply and the controller sucks. NES owns anything 8 bit before it. And some of the early 3d games are still better than most 3d games today including Doom Wolf 3d Virtua Fighter Virtua Racing Daytona USA etc Iron Soldier Starfox I love the early 3d stuff. Jumping flash. So ya, most PS1 and N64 haters are old bitter dudes who think atari 2600 is the best thing ever, pfft. and anyone who talks crap about the N64 are simply stupid, mario 64 waverace 64 and TONS of other great 3d games on that system that blew away almost anything on ps1 and thats saying something. In my eyes n64 is equally as good as ps1 even with so many less games.

let me guess, you never even played an N64 until sometime after the year 2000? This is another thing, people bashing on n64 controller, in 1996 when the n64 came out the playstation didnt even have a freaking analog controller yet. N64 controller always worked perfectly fine for me. I always took care of mine and didnt abuse it, low IQ animals who abuse their gaming stuff, sure, you can break the analog stick or make it loose and crappy if you are too rough with the controller.

Wow, dude, wow.
I never abused my N64 controllers, but all four of mine got wonky eventually. And I don't think of myself as a low IQ animal. And when the N64 controller was released, a lot of people questioned it. I know I did, and I still don't much care for it. And yes, I played well before 2000.
You are really in for ticking people off on every board you go to, aren't you?

The N64 gets a lot of undue hate. It might not have the largest library and it had plenty of crappy games (like every console ever), but it still had plenty of solid games on it. I could maybe understand someone who only plays rpg's exclusively not liking the 64. Here lately I have been playing the hell out of my 64. There is only a handful of games I still want for the system, but the 30 or so I have now are quality enough I will play them for years to come.
For me I'd have to say the Atari Lynx Is one that I wouldn't cry over if I never got to play it again.

I was never fond of the N64 controller, and to this day I don't particularly like any analog stick. They're great for defining the direction of a vector and terrible at defining its length.

wow dude you took that waaaaaay personal. Yes i played the N64 plenty of times before 2000 thank you, i grew up when everyone and their mother owned one. I just never enjoyed the way the whole trident felt in the hands. I understand why they did it too and for that i admire it but it doesnt change the fact that the controller never stopped feeling awkward. When you make blanket statements like that you tend to make an ass out of yourself man, i was just speaking out of personal experience. I dont hate the N64 i just never enjoyed it.

The Gameboy Color.
I owned one for about 6 months and got so frustrated with trying to get light at the right angle on the screen, just so I could see what was going on. I sold it and will probably never own one again.
Yeah, I'll play the Gameboy games on a Gameboy player, but keep that jacked up screen away from me.

The N64 controller is one of my favorites. It feels very comfortable and natural...never felt awkward. It took me maybe a minute to get used to it back in Sept 1996.
To me, the analog stick with the trigger underneath is perfect.

The Genesis. The music makes my ears hurt, the graphics are ugly for a 16-bit console, and I don't care for pretty much any of the exclusive games, especially the super duper overrated Sonic series.
Also, the controller sucks. Great for street fighter, terrible for pretty much everything else.

The worst system ever was the Adventurevision.
I was so pumped to get one but it was just so bad I ended up passing it on to a friend who helped me with things around the store. It was unplayable.
