Silent Hill 2. This game was a huge let down. Ive read so many good things but this was not the case. Im going to play Fatal Frame 2 another so called scary game the last time I played it was not enticing.

Got another one to add, this one courtesy of Steam's Capcom sale. I picked up "Cherry Tree High Comedy Club" for $3.99. It's got the same mechanics as a Japanese dating sim, but I'd never played one of those before and this looked interesting to me with its anime graphics. I beat the whole game in about 2.5 hours, but there's a New Game Plus mode so at least I have a reason to play again.

Aside from the fact that just about every quest is a fetch quest and the big box of loading screens you've got to sit through, it's pretty good. I can't say this is for everyone, though. It's clearly trying to be Skyrim lite and in a handful of ways it does that just enough to pull in fans, then goes off into it's own thing. I feel, despite the problems surrounding the game (aside, if any of you have never looked this game up, check out the Wikipedia article, this game has a fairly hilarious history), it's a decent game that's bogged down by repetition and a picky audience.

Cleared all 8 worlds in New Super Mario Bros. on Nintendo DS. Found the hidden 4th and 7th worlds although I did not clear every stage. I didn't get all 3 coins from each stage but I certainly got the majority. Nor do I have interest at this time going through the game with Luigi, he seems fairly similar after all. It's an alright game given the it had been 11 years since a 2D platforming Mario game had been developed (if you count Yoshi's Island). I find it's best to play a lot in a single session since for whatever reason whenever I took a break it took a bite of my timing. It was a bit annoying but otherwise alright as mentioned.

Back to back posts but I'll take it.
Finally cleared Metal Gear Solid (Ghost Babel) for Game Boy Color on a GBA SP. Finish time was in 2:33:39 with 22 alerts, 10 kills, and 5 rations used for a Tarantura rank on normal difficulty. It seemed like it took longer to beat perhaps due to the C4 bombing mission. It's an alright game with a fairly short experience if you exclude the VR Missions and pushing for a better rank/clear time. The boss fights were alright but nothing too memorable or challenging so it will be a while before I come back to this.

32. Everblue (PS2) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
This is certainly what I would call a hidden gem, especially if you're an adventure gamer! You take on the role of Leo, who's more or less coerced by his childhood friend to dive in search of ship wrecks and the treasures they hold. You soon come across a strange, jewel like object, and it seems to be related to stories about a curse on the ocean itself.
The game uses a point & click interface when you're in the town. The NPCs in town serve multiple purposes: Some are collector's whom you can give objects you find in return for eventual rewards; Some are merchants who will sell and buy goods; Some are there purely to help along the story or add some lore to the world; And some are there with more specialized purposes, like synthesizing of items, auctions, or for taking you out to sea, where the main gameplay is.
The main gameplay is underwater exploration, which happens in first person. When just having left the town, and diving more or less randomly in the sea, it's easy to get a bit annoyed by the fact that you can't move your character or the camera up or down. This annoyed me as well, until I realized that this part of the gameplay was more like a "world map" than anything else. And being able to move vertically there is not even needed, anyway. You basically swim about underwater, and you can use a sonar to look for treasure. The type of items the sonar reacts to depends on the "elements" you equip it with - so you can have it find metal and glass items, or wood and clay items, etc. These elements are items you need to find or purchase to be able to use. Soon you will also find sunken ships which you can enter, and when you do, that's where the real gameplay lies.
Once you've entered a ship, you have full maneuverability: You can now also move up and down with both your character and the camera as you wish. You can also pick up almost any item you can find, although not everything is possible to pick up at first due to there being limits to how much you are able to carry. Once you get better gear(which can improve the amount of oxygen and stamina you have, how much you can carry, how deep you can dive without freezing, and how fast and maneuverable you are), you are also able to take larger and heavier stuff with you. Your stamina will also improve by time.
For those who enjoy games where you've got collectables that you can complete, there's certainly more than enough of that in this game, as well. You've got titles which are given to you by different people based on things you do(dive down X amount of meters, find a certain treasure, etc.), coins that are given to you as a token of trust and friendship, and collectors who want one of every item of specific types(for example, one guy wants to taste all the different types of liquor you can get). These things are all optional though, and you don't need to do them at all if you're not into it.
There's certainly more than enough to do in this game, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys exploring and treasure hunting in games!

Another great LEGO game. Each one of these tends to be better than the last and bring something new to the table. I was a tad bummed to find out that this one is a tad easier than previous installments. No losing studs when you die, nothing particularly hard to find, less things to buy...kinda sad. I'm also not pleased with the vehicle controls, really damn slippery. Still, a fun entry and there is a huge LEGO crafted New York to explore. I recommend this.

Cleared ActRaiser (US release) today with a 4556 world population. I could have maxed the population not to mention a couple of stages but I'm alright with the outcome. Terrific game and I'm surprised I took so long to actually try it out. For being a launch title and inexpensive it's rather uncommon, perhaps chalk it up to Enix and potentially low print numbers. As for the game it's got challenge and a nice progression of difficulty. I did Fillmore-Bloodpool-Kasandora-Marahna-Aitos-Northwall which is nice since there is some element of choice in future plays. The soundtrack is good as often touted and it's overall a very polished game. I may go on to the action only part 2 but I'm in no rush. Perhaps mastering Professional mode here first would be a good idea.

Silent Hill 2. This game was a huge let down. Ive read so many good things but this was not the case. Im going to play Fatal Frame 2 another so called scary game the last time I played it was not enticing.Man, that's unfortunate. I'm one of those people who sings Silent Hill 2's praises. It's easily one of my favorite games of all time, and it scared the HELL out of me. I imagine it's different playing through it today for the first time after hearing so much and being exposed to so many other horror games, plus the gameplay mechanic may be a little dated in contrast. When I first played Silent Hill 2 I'd never played or heard of the franchise before, so I didn't have impressions at all, and it shocked me like no other game.
I never finished Fatal Frame II, but what I did play freaked me the hell out. Have you tried the Dead Space series? There are tons of scares to be had there. Well, there were for me anyway.

Short, sweet. Really no complaints here. I can understand why people would have an issue with it, seeing how short it was with no trophy support at $15. But it didn't strike me as a bad experience. Still, only recommended for Ratchet & Clank fans, mostly based on the price point. If you're not a fan (yet), there are cheaper, fuller games to start with.

At least since 2010. I don't remember when the earliest one was. And yes, there will be one for the coming year. Normally once it's midnight on New Years Day in New York, if no one has made the topic yet, I'll take the initiative.

Sweet deal, good to know! I look forward to participating in the discussion. I could bring my list from Racketboy for this year, but it's currently around 80 games long for the year, so I figured it would be rude to just jump in with that this late in the game.

I wouldn't be rude at all to just jump in, I don't think anyone would discourage you! Certainly not me! We could use some more discussion. Some years are chattier than others.
Edit: You got me curious as to how long we've been doing this, so I did some searching. The earliest topic the search can find is from 2003, there doesn't seem to be one for 2004, but there has been a topic every year since 2005. Might be nice to add a history section to first post of this and further topics linking back to the old ones.

Since I'm staying with family, I have access to my big box of Nintendo Power issues again, and I resumed right where I last left off in issue 52. I'm on issue 54 at the moment, and I'm back in my old routine of playing games that I'm reading about. So Super Ninja Boy is likely only the first in a string of SNES games I'll be playing and beating. It wasn't great but it wasn't terrible either, and it had enough quirks and interesting aspects to be worth a play. At the very least, I got my buck's worth of entertainment out of it, seeing as that's what I paid for it at a neighbor's garage sale just two houses down from here.

Wow. One hell of a game that I really didn't think would live up to the hype, yet it blew me away. This is one of the rare games that I did a ton of the collecting, unlocking, etc on. And also one of the rare games that I honestly delayed ending for the last few weeks because I was enjoying it so much. My finished save file clocks in at 200:50. I'll remember this experience for a long time.

This game just never gets old with me and is still my favorite Castlevania game ever. The best soundtrack in the series(IMHO) really sets the mood here. The game has such a lonely, melancholy feel to it that really sets it apart from any other game I've ever played. The controls are tight and cheap deaths don't come at you left and right like in earlier Castlevania games. The game has just enough challenge to keep it from being a total breeze. I really love the subdued colors in the game as well. And once again, the music just kills me. One of the few games I actually ordered the soundtrack to. Love this game.

33. Duck Tales Remastered (Wii U) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Wow, this was a great game! I had not played the original, so it certainly wasn't nostalgia that made this game awesome in my eyes. No, it was just a fantastic game in its own right!

This didn't survive the HD jump full intact. Stuttering cinematics, broken animations, crazy volume spikes. I popped in the original to see if maybe that was just my hazy memory at work, but nope. The original only has the odd broken model here or there. All that aside, I remember now why this was the blacksheep of the PS2 Ratchet games (not including the two PSP ports). It's just such a departure from the three games before it that it stands out. No exploration, all lite platforming with third person shooting. It's not a bad game, don't misunderstand, it's just not a particularly amazing entry into the series.

Cleared Metal Gear on original difficulty (MSX version on the PS2 MGS3S disc 2) this evening in just over 3 hours and the rank title of deer. It goes without saying many rations were used, many alarms were triggered and many guards/enemies killed. It's a good game for it's time but it's quite dated now and at times rather annoying with automatic re-spawn of enemies upon re-entering areas and the question detection parameters. The back-tracking could've been toned down but perhaps that's just Metal Gear's MO. Having said that the ending pardon knowing the combatants long before today was pretty cool. The bosses, including the big commandant himself, are all quite easy to defeat. I'll probably start a game in Metal Gear 2 next year which I look forward to since it improves upon MG1 in every facet from what I've experienced thus far. No big deal, job done, that's all... No big deal...

I've said this a number of times this year about various game, but, I'm not sure how I feel about this. It's Pokemon, enjoyable and reliable as always. But it just felt.....too small? That might not be the best way to put it, but small is all I can come up with. The game felt short and like there wasn't much new content, so it was padded with pointless features. To be honest, my first complaint (which came shortly after the fourth badge) was that the game was crazy easy compaired to earlier versions. Would I recommend it? Yes, but wait for it to go on sale.

Fun puzzle like game where you hit enemies with a whip/stick/sword gather treasures and watch out for booby traps. Your goal is to step on every tile of the maze.

A victory 20 years in the making for me, I have finally beaten Jurassic Park on Super Nintendo. :D I conquered my fear and confusion over this game, and I no long feel the guilt I had for actively avoiding this Christmas gift all these years. It feels great to clear away what was basically the original "backlog" game for me.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist(WiiU)
As usual, I really enjoyed the game as I'm a pretty big fan of the series. The issue that almost made me skip over the game, Ubisoft dumping Michael Ironside as the voice of Sam Fisher, really was quite an annoyance throughout. Coupled with the fact that the series is jumping into the "dudebro" garbage, I really didn't get into the story at all. Although it began a few games back in the series, Blacklist suffers from the "Force Unleashed syndrome" as I call it: making the characters angsty and constantly having a chip on their shoulder. I really don't dig that with Sam Fisher, who was originally cool as a cucumber. Now it seems like every other scene he is screaming, slamming his fists on the table, etc. Toward the end I just started skipping some of the briefs and scenes.
As for the gameplay, it was the usual Splinter Cell goodness for the most part. I didn't care too much for some of the gimmick portions(shadowing a character to get through security, sneaking through a forest while holding a hostage), but they were thankfully few and far between. It's still a blast to sneak through a level taking out all of the enemies, then running around the area for the heck of it when all threats are gone haha.
And damn, the credits are loooooong. Reminds me of the credits for Rayman 2 which seemed to never end. Must be an Ubisoft thing.

I got this game in under the wire for 2013 and I'm glad to have finally done it.

Just cleared The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask in the Zelda Collector's Edition on GameCube. I'm missing 31 pieces of heart, 2 bottles, 3 masks (plus by extension the Fierce Deity mask), and of note did not do the Woodfall dungeon stray fairy quest. The last dungeon was really well designed if only a little short - which could almost be said of the game but even missing as many PoH as I am there was still a lot of content for the condensed world. Very good Zelda game and while the GameCube version is far from perfect it's a great addition to the library with the other 3 games on disc. I'll probably be working on Zelda 2 in the new year as well as some new GameCube fare, likely Resident Evil. Here's to a productive 2014.

Whelp, I'm at a gathering, so I think I'm done beating games for this year. So, I'm calling it.
38 games beaten this year.
29 games 100% this year.

PSN - 13
PS3 - 10
Steam - 7
GB - 2
N64 - 2
GBC - 1
3DS - 1

Didn't do as well this year, as I had been beating an at least 50 games each over the last three years. Maybe next year will be better.

I beat The Last of Us. Man that game was so mediocre, all the near perfect scores dumbfound me. It was nothing spectacular. Ugh, I can go on but I don't want to bore anyone and myself. Definitely will try to sell it.

Interesting. Are those numbers after the games representing how many times you've completed them all before? I wish I could remember all of mine, as many times as I completed them.

No, it's a rough 'at the moment' grading on a scale of 0-10 :)
Some of them are re-plays though, like TF and Lion King.
