Super Paper Mario (Wii)

I watched youtube footage on this awhile back and decided it wasn't for me. Too much storyline for an action game. A friend wanted to play through it, however, so I told him, "Sure, we can take turns fast-forwarding dialogue." The game is actually pretty fun, so now I might have to pick it up. It's only $20, so why not?

Aidyn Chronicles, lol

Gets more interesting over time. I wouldn't want to play this without a guide at hand, because of the odd locations of a few necessary items and a few other quirks. I just spent a bunch of time looking around a city and I will have to revert to an earlier save in order to talk to some guy and see a bunch of content. Even the walkthrough was misleading on this point, apparently, because he seems to disappear not only if you leave the town but if you enter houses in the very first outside area of this town (Terminor).

Spent a fair amount of time laughing, in the early stages of the game, at the hero's inability to run to battles. Doing much better now. Leveling all melee damage stuff first: Don't think I need to level the Sword skill too high, although I'll test a bit to see if it increases damage - the skill description just mentions accuracy. Getting party members that can execute backstabs for extra damage is important.

Unfortunately, I haven't been playing much lately. Just been busy with other things. But I did try out a couple more games from Christmas - Vay and Wild Woody on Sega CD, and I also finally started Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams for PC. This is probably the only time you guys will see me talking about playing through a PC game (outside of very rarely playing something via emulation) since I'm not a PC gamer at all. For Giana Sisters, though, I'm willing to make an exception. Back when the Kickstarter was going, I probably wouldn't have bothered contributing had it already met its goal and had it been announced that it would eventually come to XBL and PSN. Of course, that announcement couldn't have come then, so I just went ahead and settled with the PC version since, as far as I knew then, that may have been the only release and the only way to get a physical copy. So far I've played through the first three stages, and it's pretty fun.

I'm up to stage 3-3 in Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams for PC, which is something like 15 stages into the game, with around 8 stages remaining, I believe (there are only three worlds). I've only perfected the first 3 or so stages, though, so I've still got plenty more to do in the levels I've cleared. I'm really enjoying the game so far. It's got very clever level designs, plenty of challenge, and well-hidden secrets and sections that are almost like puzzles. It feels very much like an ode to classic games and their fans. I'd highly recommend it to anybody on here who still loves 8-bit and 16-bit platformers like me. Forget stuff like New Super Mario Bros. with its sloppy controls and pandering difficulty, Giana Sisters is way more of an homage to the classic games we love, and unlike a lot of the modern Nintendo offerings, it doesn't feel derivative despite its inspirations. It still feels very fresh and creative. If I had to pick a single game that it reminds me of, I'd go with Donkey Kong Country 2. The tag-team switching back and forth between characters, the twirl like Dixie's spin, the charge like Diddy's cartwheel, the healthy challenge, the controls that strike a nice balance between tightness and fluidity, heck, even the music reminds me a tiny bit of DKC2 at times. But I also detect some Mario, Sonic, Castlevania, and, of course, classic Giana Sisters in here. And it plays quite nice with a SNES controller. :)

Getting pretty close to beating Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams for PC now. I'm on 3-9, so that leaves me with just one normal stage and the final boss stage to go. My progress has slowed down a little, though. When I first started, I'd play about three stages at a time before I'd want a break, then two and maybe a quick replay of an early stage to improve my performance, and now one and maybe a replay. The later stages feel a lot longer, but maybe it's just a matter of me losing more lives rather than the stages literally being bigger, I don't know. I don't have many complaints with the game, but that would be one, as the stages do feel way too long sometimes. They could've just as well doubled the number of stages by splitting the content into shorter bursts and I wouldn't complain. It's especially a pain for redoing stages because even when you're good, they still take a decent chunk of time, and with just a few slip-ups, you have to redo it all if you're going for a perfect five star ranking.

Never posted in one of these threads that I can recall, but feel like it right now for some reason.

I'm playing Bioshock right now. Kind of ashamed to admit it has taken me this long to get to it since I played System Shock 1 & 2 back when and loved those. Oddly, I think they were much creepier and tense than is Bioshock, but Bioshock was 'getting to me' more when I started than those earlier titles did. To the point that I wasn't eager to play. I don't like being creeped out or scared that much. Anyway, I'm just entering the Smuggler's Den (I think that's what it is called) after the battle where you had to give up all your weapons. I'm pretty well hooked at this point and can't wait to play more. Playing on PC.

I got up to the final boss of Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams on PC, but, oof, it's gonna take some practice. And unfortunately I'm going to have to redo the stage because I had to eventually quit the last time I was playing after spending a long time on many failed attempts. Given the unlimited lives and the length of stages, it's pretty dumb that the game doesn't at least have a quicksave feature to return you to your last checkpoint in a stage. I mean, it wouldn't affect the difficulty at all; it would merely make the game friendlier to short sessions. Anyway, back to the final boss, he could be improved too. He's such a pain because not only is he very challenging but the battle takes FOREVER. The animations are so slow that much of the time just feels like waiting for him to do something, only to quickly die as soon as he does, forcing you to tediously sit through all that over and over. It feels like all eternity before you even get an opportunity to land a single hit. I know all the bosses follow a 3-hit-kill design, and they want the final battle to feel epic and not be over in an instant, but I would've much preferred having a final battle that moved along quicker and required more than three hits than spending so much time waiting and dodging.

Playing: Chrono Trigger (Stuck at a boss a while back with overpowered attacks based on its hands, will resume sometime later)
Fantasia (Genesis) - Just came in the mail today. With the help of Game Genie it'll be tolerable.
Quackshot (Genesis) - Expecting in a few days. Already played a bit on emulator in preparation.

I picked up a copy of Valkyria Chronicles II for PSP a few weeks back, gotta get back to that sometime.

Doing 100% runs in both super mario world and Donkey Kong Country 2 bit by bit. On that note, fuck Bramble Scramble. Forgot how hard that one was until I spent an hour trying to pass it. Probably would've felt way less cheap if either just the monkeys or just the parrot was the hitbox and not BOTH.

Still pretty early in mario world.

I've only been focusing on two games recently:

Tales of Destiny 2 (JPN) - I'm about two-thirds through it so far. The battle system took a bit to get used to, as melee attacks aren't as effective as magic. I pretty much have to use the melee characters as meat shields, while my spell casters break through the enemy's defenses with magic.

Probably the most memorable battle in the game so far has been against Barbatos "No Items Ever" Goetia. I actually forgot about the no items rule, but I still managed to win the first battle with him. However, I doubt I'll be as lucky in the other two fights with him.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - I'm currently level grinding a few recently caught familiars near the city of Hamlin. Like the DS version, the familiar raising system is really addicting. (Although the capture rates seem to be worse in the PS3 version.)

Meh I like the south Lamar location better. I'm always there and the staff seems much more helpful.

The north location is in walking distance from me. I won second place by playing as the clown, being super cheap and pressing X and occasionally Y. :D They told me not to use him in the finals, and I was just happy I got there so I got Zangieff character, was hoping to do the uncomfortable squeeze hold, but didnt get to. :( I bought a Final Fantasy 7 walkthrough with half my winnings. It was double elimination, out of five guys, a dudes gf wouldnt play for whatever reason. I lost my first match, then beat the 5th guy who had to fight all of us to get into the finals haha, then I won the semi and the finals began, and I lost the clown :S It was so much fun, this game is weird and crappy as hell. The Elvis level will stay with me for better or worse.

Im going to go to the south location for the Super Smash Bros event.

I posted about it in the Beaten in 2013 topic, but I beat Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams for PC not long after my last post. I haven't touched it much since then. I still want to earn 5 stars in all the stages, though. Part of the reason I haven't been playing it is because the game didn't run well on my PC, so I ended up playing through the game on my fiance's laptop, which he's been using a lot lately. Another one of the downsides of PC gaming. It'd be nice to have it on my 360 when it's available, but I doubt I'd be willing to drop even more cash on the game after backing the Kickstarter at $100.

Anyway, I have, however, been trying out a bunch of imports. I tried out a little of Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 6, which I just picked up on a whim even though I don't really play or collect N64 sports games, and I played Densha de Go! 64 enough to beat it. Finally got a decent price on a game + controller combo. I imagine that the game might be a little dull with the standard controller, but the train controller really makes it. I'm still kinda lousy at the game in my opinion, especially at stopping in the stations well, but I've been getting better and better.

I also pulled out my PC-FX again, with the intention of beating a couple games I've been planning to play for a while. Before that, though, I had a whole stack of games I bought before Christmas to test out. I put a little bit of time into Fushigi no Kuni no Angelique, Ah! Megami-sama, Ojousama Sousamou, Voice Paradise, Can Can Bunny Extra DX, Doukyusei 2, Graduation 2: Neo Generation FX, Zoku Hatukoi Monogatari: Shugaku Ryokou, and the Galaxy Fraulein Yuna FX demo. I'm hoping to someday have a full set, so I was just picking up some cheap titles with these, which, for the PC-FX, means pretty text-heavy titles. :P I do have many of the more action-based titles already, but there are a few more that will take some more cash than these titles to acquire. These games seemed cool, though, and with any luck, maybe they'll get fan patches someday.

I finally started up Pia Carrot e Youkoso!! (AKA Welcome to Pia Carrot) on PC-FX after looking forward to playing it for a long time. Many years ago, I read a review on the game (found here: http://www.honestgamers.com/reviews/3681.html), and I found myself really fascinated with the game (granted, that's not just the game's doing, but also because I'm a big fan of the reviewer, as he makes every game he writes about come alive). Back then, I didn't even know if I would ever own a PC-FX or have an opportunity to play Pia Carrot, let alone in English, yet here I am. Thanks to a couple of great guys who happen to be fans of this unfairly maligned system, we have the world's first English fan translation for a PC-FX game, a system that has never seen any of its games in English before. And even though I typically never touch fan translations, instead opting for the real deal when it comes to imports, the fact that I could rip my own official copy of the game, patch the image, burn an English disc, and pop it straight into my system makes all the difference. For a second, you can almost imagine that the PC-FX actually did get released outside of Japan. So, anyway, I've played through the game once now, which only lasts for one month in-game. In real time, it shouldn't take more than a few hours tops. I didn't win over any of the girls this time. I just sort of dabbled around in everything at first, trying out all the different jobs and meeting everybody I could, then about half way through I started focusing more on Shiho, the manager, since it seemed like I was running into her a lot and my stats seemed good for her. I guess it wasn't enough time to make her really like me, though. But the game is intended to be replayed many times, and I'm sure it'll go much faster in subsequent attempts, as I focus more and can somewhat skip past text I've already read.

Hurray, I finally got a real ending in Welcome to Pia Carrot on PC-FX on my third go. While I could understand not being successful my first time, it was pretty frustrating going through the game a second time and failing yet again, despite that I was really focusing on Satomi. For the third attempt, I focused on Shouko. Either though I got her ending, I still haven't unlocked every scene with her which is a little perplexing. A couple are just alternate versions with the different uniforms, but I have, I believe, four other pictures I have no idea how to get. Oh well, I'll move on to a different girl and see if I can stumble across the rest of Shouko's.

I've replayed Welcome to Pia Carrot on PC-FX a couple more times since my last post. First I focused on Reika, and even though she's a little tricky because she avoids you for much of the game, I managed to figure out everything on my own and get her ending. The only problem, though, is that I did everything perfectly EXCEPT for the boneheaded mistake of declining to go on the Okinawa trip at the end. I made the idiotic assumption that she wouldn't go, for some reason. That cost me the last two mid-game cutscene pictures, and since I didn't have a backup save, I have to replay the WHOLE game to complete her album. :/ Talk about frustrating. Then I decided to tackle Shiho again, after somewhat focusing on her during my very first playthrough. I did everything fine and got her ending, but it looks like there are alternate versions of her ending picture depending on what uniform you choose. Looks like it'll take three successful attempts at winning Shiho over to complete her album. Pretty tedious. So even after five runs through the game, I still haven't managed to complete a single girl's album. Oh well. At least I can complete the whole game in just one evening.

Over the last few days I've been playing the following:

Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3) - I still have fun just messing about. I finally found all the random characters and I'm dating that looney tunes clingy chick Kiki Jenkins.
Transformers: War For Cybertron (PS3) - I'm getting through the Decepticon episodes. I think it is a good game that was truer to the source material than the live action movies at least!
Activision Classics (PS1) - I know the emulation is off and Kaboom is useless using the directional pad. I still like the collection for what it is. I managed to find a still sealed Greatest Hits copy for less than $6 plus shipping. It was a nice feeling to open something retro as if it were freshly bought off the shelf!

I finished Welcome to Pia Carrot on PC-FX with Yukiko, and it looks like she's another character that requires three playthroughs to complete her album. It's not the ending picture that changes, but the scenes are so late in the game that I doubt I could focus on another girl and still get Yukiko's fondness high enough to trigger the scenes (and without damaging my odds of getting an ending with someone else). I think I've gone after every girl who works at Pia Carrot (even if I failed with Satomi), so now I'll focus on the more "secret" girls before going back to work on what I missed. One thing I'm starting to notice in this game is that it's kind of depressing when you really think about the story. Almost every single girl has some kind of problem going on in her life, and while you can help whatever girl you choose to focus on, all the others are left in a pretty sorry state. Like with the aforementioned scene with Yukiko that has the alternate versions, it's pretty terrible to imagine what happens to her when you don't get involved with her and nobody steps in to help. I don't want to spoil it for anybody who might play through the game (and I highly recommend doing so), but the game definitely has a more interesting, moving story than the average dating sim.

I'm just a few days shy of the end of Welcome to Pia Carrot on PC-FX with Kiyomi as my focus. I'm missing just one picture with her now, so unless I inexplicably fail to get the ending, this should be the first time that I've gotten every scene of a girl in one go. Granted, it helps that she doesn't work at Pia Carrot, so no alternate uniform nonsense to worry about. It also helps that I load fairly often in order to try out different options. In fact, I could've easily missed some of Kiyomi's pictures if I had gone with my gut. A couple times I picked what I figured were "bad" choices, expecting to load after that, only to discover that they were the best choices to go with. Just goes to show that it pays to be a little daring, rather than always going with the responses that seem the nicest. While focusing on Kiyomi, I also pursued Saori a little bit. I've been slowly discovering more and more about how to go after her with each playthrough since she seems too tricky to try to figure out in one go. I think I finally know enough about how to progress with her that I'll probably focus on her when I'm done with this Kiyomi file. And while I go after her, I should see if I can figure out how to finally meet Yukari.

I have been on a Jaguar kick. I just got a rotary controller and SVideo cable from ebay. I got a great deal, $45 shipped for both. Been playing Tempest and Power Drive Rally. Love both of those games. Now Im on a kick to finish my Jaguar collection.

I haven't been playing much lately (need to get back to Pia Carrot), but I did try out a few recent acquisitions. First I tried out a pair of Japanese Nintendo 64 mahjong games: Jangou Simulation Mahjong Michi 64 and Mahjong Hourouki Classic. I really want to figure out how to play Japanese mahjong and I know the general goal, but there's something I'm still just not getting. I'll probably have to do more research online. Then I played a little of GB Genjin (AKA the Japanese version of Bonk's Adventure) on my Game Boy Advance SP. Not quite as good as Bonk on TG-16, but still a solid translation of Bonk gameplay to the ol' Game Boy. Should be fun when I sit down to play through the whole game.

Super Mario World for the SNES

I grew up with a Sega Genesis so it's cool getting to play all the SNES games that I couldn't back then but wanted to.

I've been playing the last parts of Max Payne 3 while trying to tie up loose achievements in Halo 4. I also played Ninja Gaiden on my 3DS last night.

Along with my daily dose of Halo 4 I started playing The Avengers: Battle For Earth yesterday. For a Kinect fighting game it's not that bad, but as with most Kinect games the hit detection is pretty spotty at times.

I'm playing ICO the HD port.

It's my first time playing the game and it's probably going to join near the top of my all time favorite games.

The ironic thing about it is I remember seeing this game on PS2 in gamestop frequently. Where I use to live me and my buddies almost lived in gamestop. Anyway I use to pass this game off with a bad stigma just mainly based on the cover art.
