Most of the custodians here where I work are people struggling to make ends meet. There is one lady in particular named Sandra who has been here almost as long as my wife and I have. She has two kids, Pablo, age 8, and Miguel, age 5.

Last year, Sandra went on a road trip to Mexico. Somewhere in the middle of Texas she had a blowout and swerved off the road. Her truck rolled several times. Pablo ended up in ICU but is okay now. Her brother and cousin were both killed. Now Sandra's family is suing her for the accident, saying she fell asleep at the wheel and caused the accident. During this time her family called her collect from Mexico a ton, and she ended up with an $800 phone bill she can't pay either.

To make a long story short, Sandra was talking to my wife about Christmas and she said basically her kids weren't getting anything this year. When Susan asked her what they wanted all she would say is they need some new clothes. About a month or so ago, I was talking to her because she saw a picture of my gameroom and she mentioned that her kids really wanted a Gamecube but that she could never afford one.

Anyway ... I was just kind of poking around here to see if anyone had one they would let go pretty inexpensively. If someone has a GC that's collecting dust or has a store that could get me a good deal on one (or even better, write it off), let me know. If someone comes up with a 'Cube, I'd be willing to buy 4 or 5 games, and I've got an extra controller as well.

Just thought I'd throw this out there.

PM your address and I'll send you a Cube game.

NOTE: We now have a Gamecube AND a Gameboy Advance donated, so if you have a spare game for either of those systems lying around, they would make a great gift for these kids!

If you would prefer to simply send a donation, $10 or even $5 could really help out. What doesn't go towards games and accessories will go toward a couple of gift cards which will most lkely go towards food, clothes, and other small gifts.

Since I think we've gone with the "donation" idea over someone physically sending me a Gamecube, I'm going to shadow this in the main forum as well. Thanks again to everyone who's helped so far. A little bit from everyone ends up being a lot to kids with literally nothing. Thank you all again!

I find this to be a great cause as well. Unfortunately, like autobotracing, I don't have much money to my name. I have $4 currently for spending, the rest is going for college text books in January. However, I think this is a great thing, and it really makes me want to do something for a similar cause some time. It really reminds me the importance of life and so forth.

Thank you all for your quick and overwhelming generosity!

boatofcar has generously pledged a Gamecube! I have a second controller, still in the package. The donations will go toward a selection of children's Gamecube games, and maybe another controller.

As mentioned, I will definitely have some photos of Christmas over at their house with the kids and the system.

Also ... if everyone who donated could send me a digital picture of yourself (you can e-mail it to robohara@cox.net), I will put together a custom Christmas card for Sandra and her children.

Thank you all again for your warm outpouring of support! It's things like this that make Digital Press such a kick ass place.

dang flack. i was gonna throw you a few games because i know how much it stinks not getting anything for christmas. i went to take a glance at what i had............BLOODRAYNE and DBZ-budakai..............both sealed of course but i dont think they would like either one(might be a bit mature for them, bloodrayne for sure) anyways. i just won a contest and ill hopefully have some GC stuff to send to you for theese kids, either that or some paypal.

Flack, I have 2 third party controllers for Gamecube (pretty good Interact ones) that I'd be glad to donate if you could use them. They're both opened but are in absolutely great condition (only played with once or twice). Let me know if you need them and I'll be glad to ship them out. I was going to send some paypal cash, but other board members have that covered it looks like. PM me or reply here and I'll get them in the mail ASAP.

Yeah. From what my wife told me, they are filing either a wrongful death or a neglegent death lawsuit against her (Sandra's English isn't the best, but that's the way my wife understood it). Apparently their lawyer is claiming that Sandra fell asleep while driving and caused the accident. What a sucky thing to sue your own family.

My PayPal address and mailing address are back in the thread (third message down I believe). If anyone wants to mail a game or anything else, feel free to do so. Just keep in mind that there are other needy families out there as well this Holiday season. Anything not spent on games will probably be given in the form of a Wal-Mart gift card.

Whoever was getting the GBA player, if you get it working and out, please PM me. I have a few Pokemon games that I'll never play (don't even have a Game Boy...) but I'll be happy to send them along. Or Flack if you end up getting one for them (it might not be a bad idea, as used GameBoy games could be picked up for a buck at a lot of places -- which is probably more acceptable than a $20.00 GameCube game)

Unfortunately, I am broke beyond that this holiday season. I don't have any GameCube things at all, so this is the best I can do :) If it helps, please feel free to PM me.

And I completely agree about the wrongful lawsuit. I'm actually in the process of suing someone right now -- a drunk driver who nearly killed me -- and even that was a tough decision to make. Even if I didn't like a family member, there is no way I would sue them. That's just insane.

yes, the state of lawsuit-happiness in the country is insane. I do know people who spend HOURS a week trying to figure out if there's some loophole somewhere they can abuse so they can sue someone and get free money.

Yup -- I'm all for English law where if the court case is thrown out, the person that sued has to pay all of the defenses court fees. That's why England has so many fewer stupid court cases -- one judge throws out one, and everyone else that wants to sue over spilt coffee, hot food or being "forced" to become fat by Burger King would have second thoughts...

Anyway, back on topic -- I checked and have Pokemon Red and Yellow, and I think I have Blue somewhere (GBA?) too.

Flack,

I would be happy to send you a GC game as well... would NCAA Football 2003 be appropriate/wanted? I have no idea what 5 and 8 year old boys like (only having a 9 month old daughter). Or would it be too complicated of a game?

If so, I'll happily send it to your address above.

If not, I'll happily send you some cash for another game.

Get used games! That way, you can BURY them in GC goodness. Rather than getting 3 or 4 brand new games, you should be able to get double that many gently-used games. And I'd suggest as many two-player simultaneous games as possible, so they can both play it at any time rather than waiting for the other to finish.

Great job gang.

I'll second that. Go for used games. The advantage of buying for little kids, is they aren't going to care if they are mint or complete or anything like that. Hell, i didnt when i was five.(still don't.)
My contribution has been mailed. Don't for one second think that i am going soft so far as Christmas is concerned - I still HATE IT. People are so selfish and pathetic! I am disgusted with the mentality of this country, sue happy fucks! I hope Karma serves them some justice..

I don't mean to threadjack, especially on such a noble cause that Flack has advocated, but as the resident attorney on these boards, I would like to bring to light a few misunderstandings with the legal process, and as to why these people are suing their own relative. But before I do so, I just want to point out that I am not a personal injury attorney, so you can hold back with all the derogatory comments you may have.

All states require a motor vehicle to be covered by auto insurance, at least liability and property damage insurance. That way, if the driver gets in an accident he can report a claim to his/her insurance company to cover any injuries to third parties, or damage to their property.

Now, if you happen to be one of those unfortunate to be injured as a result of someone else's negligence (alleged that is), you have to go through several processes in order to get the appropriate coverage. One of which is to file a claim with your own insurance policy. However, insurance policies always contain some provision that require a coordination of benefits with other policies that may cover the same claim, that is, your insurer will first look to the policy of the negligent driver for primary coverage. Then the injured party must sue the negligent driver to get coverage under the driver's policy. At that point, the driver's insurance company will step into the lawsuit and provide an attorney to defend the action, and pay any judgment up to the amount of the policy limits. It is very seldom that the person suing will obtain a judgment against the defendant for more than the policy limits, unless that person is independently wealthy and collectable.

Now if the driver doesn't have insurance (which is a misdemeanor or felony) you'll still have to sue the driver and get a judgment in order for your insurance company to provide coverage under any "uninsured motorist coverage" that you may have.

So to wrap things up, if these people were seriously injured (some were killed), then their only choice is to sue the driver in order for an insurance company (either the driver's or their own) to step in and provide insurance coverage.

"Require" doesn't mean they're going to come to your house if you're not obeying the law. But just watch what happens if you fuck up and get caught. Say goodbye to any cash flow you may have had up to that point.

Last I checked, Wisconsin does not require that.

Wisconsin Statute 344.33 requires Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance to carry minimum coverage of $25,000 for bodily injury of 1 person, $50,000 for bodily injury to 2 or more persons, and $10,000 for injury to or destruction of property.

Pursuant to Wisconsin Statute 344.31, you are required to provide proof of "financial responsibility for the future" with your Secretary of State. One of the ways to provide proof is to produce a certificate of insurance with the policy requirements above to the Secretary of State. In the alternative, you can produce a bond, a certificate of deposite of money or securities, or a certificate of self insurance. See Wisconsin Statutes 344.36, 344.37 and 344.17.

Perhaps you are thinking of collision, fire, theft and comprehensive insurance. Typically, these are not required and are optional

I got it CMOSFM ... I just got overwhelmed by the e-mails coming in via PayPal! I'm updating the list right now, it'll be in the 3rd response from the top, 1st page.

Again, I can't say it enough, thank you all for pitching in. I'm sure these two little boys (as well as their mother) are going to have a Christmas they'll never forget.

Hey Flack,

Out of curiosity, what's the total so far? It sounds like you will really be able to hook these kids up!

Any thought to diversifying what you buy for them? Is there anything else they need?

edit. Never mind. Just went back to the front of the thread. All I can say is WOW! These kids are really going to believe in Santa after this!! Good work to everybody! It's always good to see a group of people come together to help make someone a little bit happier! I applaud you all!!

All states require a motor vehicle to be covered by auto insurance, at least liability and property damage insurance.

You may want to check again.
Last I checked, Wisconsin does not require that.

"Require" doesn't mean they're going to come to your house if you're not obeying the law. But just watch what happens if you fuck up and get caught. Say goodbye to any cash flow you may have had up to that point.

Actually he's right, but in a way you're right too Joe.

Wisconsin doesn't require insurance (I think it may be the only state that doesn't) but if you get into an accident without insurance, you're going to end up saying goodbye to all cash past and present that you ever had.

Besides my own legal proceedings (in WI), my wife was hit by someone without insurance. She only had her car "tapped" into really, and the repair was less than $1000, but the driver that hit her didn't get into any sort of trouble for being uninsured.

They're just damn lucky they didn't do worse damage than that. Imagine what a $10,000 accident would be like @_@

edit: Esquire, just saw your second post... I replied too soon! Anyway, with my unfortunate experience with Wisconsin accidents in the past two years, if that is the case it is a law that they do not enforce in any way. Not when you get your license, not when you get pulled over and not when you are in an accident.

I think that in Kenosha it is also illegal to have an erection in public, but I've never heard that one enforced either. Wisconsin is weird.

Back on topic: The Pokemon games I have are completely loose, and most don't have the best condition labels. It's all I have though, so if they are any help, I will be happy to send them.

Sent some cash your way.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but I think it would be nice if we could do this every year. Pick one family, or two, that is in need, and rock thier Christmas. Keeping it small would keep it managable, and would create a larger impact for the families we would help. I know I'd give each year, and would help out with coordination and planning.

Anyway, thanks Flack.

I talked to Sandra briefly at work today. Actually my wife saw her first told her not to buy a Gamecube and she was like, "please don't buy us a Gamecube because it is too much money and I can't afford any games for it," so then I saw her in the hall and she came up to me and kind of told me the same thing and I told her not to worry about it, that some friends of mine and I were going to take care of it and she gave me a big hug and almost started crying and said, "you are my family's Santa."

So, um yeah. This is all good. I'm going to probably spend at least half on Gamecube stuff and then the rest on a gift card to Wal-Mart or something like that. I'm sure I'll ask my wife, she's better at this sort of thing than I am. Also, if any of you guys have some additional suggestions, that would be cool.

Well, you want to make sure you either get as donations or buy yourself the following stuff for the system:

GameCube
AV hookups
Four Controllers
Game Boy Player
Two memory cards -- one of the new 1080 ones and one 256 one
Balanced games -- get some four player games, some Mario games, some Zelda games, some sports games, and anything else you think a kid can handle.

It sounds like with ammount of donations and free stuff coming in you can get around 10-15 games, especily if you buy used. Heck, if you tell the manager of your local EB/GameStop what you're doing and buy in bulk, you may even get more discounts. :)

I REALLY wish I could throw in something, but I'm so broke right now it's not even funny, and what little money I did have went to my Secret Santa package. Still, I'll try my hardest to see if I can scrape up $5 or something.
