Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex (PS2)- Average 3D platformer IMO. The ending was rather anti-climatic; you beat Cortex and Crunch, and then in an effort to make the game more replayable, the developers decided that instead of crystals you have to collect all the "gems". It was enough to have to play through all 30 levels one time when the crystals were placed at the end of the level. Not sure if there is another ending after you collect all the gems, but I'm putting this one back on the shelf and considering it beaten.

Eternal Darkness (Gamecube) (#43!)

One of the most overrated and overhyped games I've ever been able to force myself to complete. I have no idea how it managed to gradner such high review scores when it came out in 2002 and I have no idea why people so fondly declare it one of the best titles on the Gamecube. The Lovecraftian inspired premise and the neat santiy system are pissed away by piss poor level design and gameplay is stuck squarely in 1998 while being inferior to much of the survival horror games released in that time period and the "OMG AWESOME STORYLINE" turns out to be just ho hum and predictable.

I did enjoy how you got to see various locals as they were built and destroyed over the course of history, though. More games need to feature that, especially something like Grand Theft Auto. Driver Parallel Lines did something similar with the two time periods, I believe...but I'd like to see it taken to the next level :)

About how long is Paper Mario? I want to play through it sometime but I'm debating on if I want to do so in an emulator or on my N64. Decisions decisions :(

Max Payne was a lot of fun but only lasted me a couple of days :( Halo..ehh... the endgame there didn't really do anything for me.

Last time i was playing it i had like 24 hours put into it, but i never beat it. I was messing around with Tayce T's recipies too much.

I would buy electric shrooms from a store in the south side of toad town then take them to Tayce T's and have her cook one at a time, Then after she cooked them all, I'd sell the food she made with the electric shrooms at the same store i bought the shrooms at for more than what i paid for them!

Lemony Snicketts Series of Unfortunate Events (PS2) - Although it is a kids game, I found quite a bit to enjoy in this title. Large open levels, some interesting gadgets, and even a Virtua Cop mini-game. Its on the short side (~5 with no walkthrough), but the story is an interesting one. Also features the voice talent of Jim Carey which is a plus. Recommended for a rental only though, unless you are going for a complete collection or find it on the cheap side (I scored mine for a measley $4). 6/10

Just beat Shadow Hearts (PS2) (#44!)

Pretty fun little title, though a bit more linear than I expected. Reasonably short, too...I clocked in at ~25 hours and I took my time (though after glancing at a FAQ, there's quite a bit I missed). The end battle somewhat sucked as it degenerated into a very long, drawn out and basic slugfest with one guy attacking, one guy healing, and one guy replenishing the healer.

Did u get the good ending or the bad ending?

Looks like I got the bad ending. From what I've been able to find out from the FAQs and Wikipedia, it looks like the only difference is that in one ending Alice wakes up on the train and in the other she does not? Doesn't seem like it's worth the effort to play through again to find out for sure :)

It's funny, but I beat those darn masks and everything (awesome experience point source :) ), but I guess I beat them in the wrong order :( Oh well, part 2 assumes the bad ending was the right one, so I guess I lucked out :)

Star Wars Starfighter - it was pretty fun throughout the game, although there were some times when missions would take >10 mins, you get blown up and then forced to replay the entire thing over, which was a pain. Not too much in the way of plot, but the voice acting was good enough that I didn't mute the game. 7/10

Fantastic game and I really dug the action-centric shift in focus (moreso than in the previous games in the series). Without a doubt one of the best third person shooters I've ever played and comperable to MDK in more ways than one.

I've tried numerous times to keep a count on games I've beaten, but failed each time to continue with the project. However, I have started trying to count again, starting with Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, which I beat on October 7th. I beat my fourth game today, and it was quite special. Special enough that I share this wall of text :) :

" Over the past years I have tried hundreds of different video games. Many I do not complete: however, when I find a very addicting game, I will get it done. Well, with a few exceptions. One of them was a game I finished today. It's the third game I remember ever playing (Super Mario Bros. and NES Pinball came first), and one that got me hooked onto a series for the next thirteen years. It was the game that made sure video gaming would become a major part of my life, including playing, collecting, and hopefully designing video games.

That game is Sonic the Hedgehog. A game that I have played constantly for thirteen years, but never beat.

No, I do not stink at playing games. The main reason why I had never beat the first Sonic game was the level select. Sonic did not just introduce me to playing games, it also introduced me to cheat codes. I found out from a school latchkey caretaker in 1995 the level select code. She told me the code that I would never forget, a code much like the Konami code but for my time and side of the console wars. It's a very simple sequence: up, then down, left, right, and finally A+Start. This was awesome for a kid like me. I was finally able to play the zones I had never seen before due to my trouble in handling labyrinth zone, not because of the countdown music, but because of a kidnergarner's dexterity (Just to note, I'm only 16 right now). Alas, this also became a bane in that I never really tried to finish the game for many years.

Skip to last summer, Sonic's 15th birthday. I was quite busy that day, and forgot to observe this event like I had planned to a couple of months ago. At around 11:20 PM I was reading the newest posts at DP when I realized what day it was. I then decided that I must do something: I would finish Sonic 1 before midnight. Because of the time constraint, I planned to do this without emeralds. Within 20 minutes, my plan was destroyed, all thanks to the end of Labyrinth Zone Act 3. I shut the game off with one life remaining (I'm not afraid of the countdown music but rather the game over music. Odd.).

I played sometimes over the next months, until today. As I do a lot, I spent about half an hour deciding what to play this morning. I finally choose Sonic 1 and decide to dedicate myself to beating it. Oddly enough, I wizzed through it easily. Yes, I mess up a few times in special stages, but by Starlight Zone Act 2 I had all the emeralds and 14 lives. Within the next half hour I had finished off Robotnik and beat the game. For the first time ever.

However, I wasn't excited. I can only guess why: I must have been tamed by already seeing all the levels and ending via level select. It's quite sad what cheating can do sometimes. Oh well. I'm now quite happy I've finally did something I should of done ten years ago. "

Finally put the complete beatdown of Parasol Stars PC Engine, for an eternity I never made it to the stage 8 boss with 3 stars (the star miracle) always either one star short or the wrong combo, I seem to be able to consistently find the rainbow necklace to get 99 continues after I beat that stages boss (the rainbow necklace appearance seems to be inconsistent, on some tries it's in the second world, other times it's in the Gambling world), and seem to be able to take more advantage of the explosive items that appear on screen, still burning through at least 20 continues along the way. Before I could only make it to the second or third world, never finding the rainbow necklace, now I seem to find it everytime (it's still a bitch to wait out for and hope continues don't run out in later worlds until I do find the item) .

Just finished King Kong for the PS2. It was a bit on the short side, but that doesn't detract from the gameplay (It's actually nice to be able to finish a game in a few days). Top-notch visuals and voice acting propel this to one of my favorite FPS of this generation (on the PS2 at least). I really dug the fact that there is no HUD either as led to some tense moments when you thought you had more bullets than you actually did, and ultimately left you standing face to face with a large reptile hearing only CLICK-CLICK. I'm not a huge movie fan so I haven't seen the film yet, but the story would have been incredible if it was a stand alone title. 9/10

I completed Half Life 2 for PC today (#48!), nearly 2 years to the day from when it came out and I plowed through it on my ghetto PC. The game is still my favorite FPS thus far and one of my favorite games of all time.

Hell, I just finished the Xbox version back in August and I plan on playing through the Xbox360 and PS3 versions when they come out as well.

Also played through Lost Coast, though that hardly counts as a game...it's just a tech demo using a deleted level. Still, it looked DAMN nice.

Right now I'm working on Half Life 2 - Episode 1 and then after this I think I'll do Sin Episodes and FEAR. Woo for the new PC! :D

Spyhunter (PS2) - great arcade shooter (or whatever you want to call it). A great remake that doesn't lose the feel that made the original so great. Some may be frustrated with having to complete ALL the objectives in one shot, but without the structure like that, the game would just be too easy to pick through. I heard Spyhunter2 sucked however so I'm going to wait a while to plod through that one.

#49 - Half Life 2 - Episode 1

Picks up where HL2 left off and just goes running. Much more condensed than HL2 and quite fun from start to finish...
...man, I can't wait for Episode 2.

If future episodes are as high quality as this one, then I'd easily rank the Episodes series as better than HL2 (right now it's totally on the right track, but putting final word in now would be like declaring Blood better than Shadow Warrior or Duke Nukem 3D after only playing the shareware episode and before realizing that the rest of the game didn't come together as well :( ).

Playing Sin Episodes: Emergence right now and will probably finish it up tomorrow or the day after. The pace is pretty nice, graphics are quite good, and it has a level of immersion that's woefully missing from so many first person shooters...it really feels like a spirtual successor to Duke Nukem 3D. Didn't much like the original Sin and some of its faults carry over (awful storyline and characters) but overall it's quite above average thus far.

During the downtime I beat:

#50: Sin Episodes Emergence (PC)
- Surprisingly enjoyable first person shooter run n' gun. Didn't care for Sin at all, but SEE was a hoot, even with the shitty characters and bad writing. Pretty short game, but well worth the $15 it costs.

#51: Prey (PC)
- Incredibly fun! I loved the spirit world/inability to really "die" idea. Kept the focus on the fun and not once did the game ever feel tedious or difficult. Many people complain about the game being "too easy", but really...it's a $20 game of pure fun.

#52: FEAR (PC)
- Holy. Shit. Best firefights ever. It's a japanese horror movie with all of the boring shit removed and replaced with hyper intense firefights and shit blowing up and slow motion and bullets everywhere and bodies flying apart and red mists where bodies once were and holy shit i loved this game.

#53: Star Trek 25th Anniversary (PC)
- The interface is a bit wonky but the adventure portions are quite fun and, at times, challenging. A few obtuse puzzles that really require you to be checkin' the ship's computer before you beam down to a planet that'll really stump ya, but the really challenge in the game comes from the ship combat sequences. For the most part they're not too bad, but the last battle is complete SNK-boss syndrome :(

Bleh the series has become crap

I really wish you had beaten the game and posted this before I shelled out $10 on an impulse buy for the game :( Looks like I won't bother opening it up.

Yesterday I beat Black for Xbox (#54!). Great graphics and some fun action, but the levels don't fit together at all, the story is crap, there's really no sense of flow, there's no mid-mission saving (which is a pain in the ass on hour-long missions) and at its core it's really just a pretty run and gun. In that respect, I'd recommend Sin Episodes Emergence over it in a heartbeat, though the price on Black has come down to a more reasonable <$20... I shelled out ~$30 a few months ago, which IMO is a bit too much.

It's not bad or anything; I had fun with it, but if you haven't played Chronicles of Riddick, Half Life 2, Far Cry Instincts, or Tron 2.0 yet, just bump this sucker to the bottom of the queue.

Double Dragon (NES) - I finally beat this legitimatly (as opposed to using the glitch to get all 8 hearts in the second stage). Still good fun and an excellent addition to the DD series, even though it deviates from the arcade version. Had a fun 20 minutes playing through the second mode on the game as well.

Finding Nemo- Me and my daughter beat this one last night. Fun little game that follows the movie plot. I just wish that it didn't involve those sliding piece puzzles (there must have been at least six of them in the game, and I'm absolutly awful at them. Most of the time we just moved pieces around until it looked like we were getting close to completing it). There is also a ridiculous amount of item collecting in this game that serves no purpose whatsoever (one level alone with ended with over 13,000 shells, but there doesn't seem to be any reason to find and collect them as lives and continues are unlimited).

Getting close to the ending on Super Metroid as well.

#55: Star Trek: Judgment Rites CD-ROM (PC)

Excellent writing with a decreased/eliminated focus on ship combat, but the puzzle design was fairly difficult overall (much more so than the first game). While the graphics have been improved in general (backgrounds now occupy the entire size of the screen instead of just portions of it, animations are more varied and smoother, and there's generally more detail throughout), it does get kind of annoying when they try to shift the perspective of the background to an isometric viewpoint while using the same sprites as normal. There's a few instances of this in the game and gives a brief impression of being a bit...amateur.

Tons of spoken dialog (which actually inflated the size of the game to twice that of 25th Anniversary), though the audio quality is a bit lacking once again. The game just came out a few years before MP3 made its presence known, sadly :( Actually, the game itself is fairly text-heavy (especially in comparison to 25th Anniversary), so the episodic design is for the best as you can cap off an episode, take a break for a day or so, and come back and hammer away at another one.

In addition to the increased amount of spoken text, there's some prerendered video in there, too. It's not all over the place, but it is prevalent early on when the ship explodes and whenever you enter/exit orbit with another planet. While it cleans things up a bit, I do prefer the previous graphical style in most cases (except in the beginning when the ship exploded...that shit was awesome).

You get to use more than just Dr. McCoy and Mr. Spock on the away team, too! While you won't get any red shirts to kill, you'll get to play around with Chekov, Uhura, and Scotty on various away team missions. Additionally, Dr. McCoy's role has been increased significantly, so expect to be using that medical tricorder a hell of a lot more often :)

Overall, I'd probably give it the nod over 25th Anniversary. The improvements in the game design outweigh the increased adventure difficulty and at times wonky art design.

#56 - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)

I mainly forced myself to play through this because I wanted it the fuck out of my backlog, where it's been sitting pretty much since release. Over the years I've tried to play through it multiple times, each time giving up because I couldn't deal with the glaring flaws mixed with the insane overrating of the game. Since picking up Twilight Princess for Gamecube though, I felt it was time to give it one final chance.

While the camera, controls, ocarina gimmick, and early portion of the game suck as much today as they did back when the game came out, it really does pick up once you hit the Forest Temple, though it's not until the Fire Temple that it really hits its stride. Trudging though the early portion, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to make it (equating the game with Eternal Darkness' overrated reception and nostalgic appeal), but I'll be damned if i didn't have a heck of a fun time going through that last half of the game. Shame it takes so much effort to actually get to where the game is fun.

I still think the game is brutally overrated and the rose tinted memories that most people have of it from playing it when they were younger (or just plain young) obscure the blatant flaws in the game, but it's not remotely as bad as I wrote it off as being so long ago. Doubt I'll ever even think of starting it up again or anything, but hey, at least I finally played through it. :)

Now I think I'm pretty much burnt out on beating games for the year, so I doubt there'll be a #57 :(

Just this month, I have beaten:

Astro Boy: Omega Factor (GBA)
Soul Blazer (SNES)
Cybernator (SNES)
Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix (PS)

which I enjoyed in that order.

I know there were plenty of other games I beat this year that I probably haven't posted.

I've recently started a journal for the video games I play, which I find helps me stick with games and certainly helps me remember when I've beaten one. :)

Well, it was all about my Ps2 this year. Here's what I've ripped apart this year:

- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
- Castlevania: Curse of Darkness
- Star Ocean: Til the End of Time
- Kingdom Hearts II
- Silent Hill 2
- Silent Hill 3
- Suikoden V

Real close on a couple other games, but don't think I'll get them done in the next couple days:
- Final Fantasy XII
- Silent Hill 4: The Room

Other than that...I'm sure I've beat a few short, silly NES and SNES games this year, but who hasn't?
