Damn. Oh well. At least when/if they come up with a patch it'll already be paid for. This is disappointing, but there's potential for an awesome game here if Namco gets their shit together.

Oh and yeah, I did notice the blurry graphics. It looks like I hooked up my Genesis through the composite cable, not a 360 via HDMI. Interestingly, it's only the actual playfield that seems muddled. The scorebars and other areas of the screen seem sharp enough.

I'm still enjoying the single player mode.

A 2.8 is a bit harsh. The reviewer must have totally ignored the single player mode. But then again, the review came from IGN..... The game is still as addictive as it was on the Dreamcast.

Yeah, IGN is extremely harsh on Live Arcade games, especially remakes of older games. Normally I like how they review games, but they seem to not appreciate XBLA games as much as they should.

My 1 and only complaint with this version of Ikaruga - how they handled the continue feature.

They made it to where if you turn the continues on, you cant save replays, and it won't post high scores to the leaderboards.

But the game is still just as fun and challenging as ever. And IGN finally gave it a worthy 9.0 rating.

What's wrong with this? It sounds perfectly reasonable to me, as it allows the hardcore types to spend afternoons toiling away at perfect runs to see their name on the leaderboards and it allows average joes to finish the game they paid money for. It's seems to be a damn-near perfect compromise. It also beats some of the Metal Slug ports and Strider 2's always-on unlimited continues.

I've played Ikaruga briefly at a friend's house a couple years ago, but this was the first time I really sat down to play it in detail. What a great game! I tried an online co-op game and I think I pissed the other guy off because I sucked so bad. Oh well, you've got to learn somehow.

I'll probably never get my friggin' name on that leaderboard, either. Life's just too short to get that good at it.

This game makes up for last week's Mr. Driller abortion.

I admit I haven't tried the 360 version yet, but I own the GC version and there's no way I'm spending 800 points to buy a game I already have a decent version of at this point. I'm just a casual Shooter fan mind you.

And while I'm here - this Wednesday's 'game' is "Wits & Wagers". A simple trivia game which I'm sure no one will be buying. (EDIT:Except for S1lence... ;) )

Its actually not bad. Its more like a retail release then the typical XBLA game. I'm barely into it but it isn't bad. 1600 points though is a little steep, for 200 points anyway.

2 games tomorrow....

Warlords and Buku Sudoku

I'd be all over Warlords in a heartbeat, if MS would get off their asses and release a proper paddle (and ONLY a paddle) controller. This game is what online multiplayer should be all about.

But mark my words, the game will get negative reviews simply because the 360's controllers will affect gameplay, and make the game more frustrating.

s1lence
05-27-2008, 09:50 PM
Well, Warlords is developed by Stainless. They have brought us almost all the poor Atari ports so Warlords is probably going to suck.

diskoboy
05-29-2008, 01:08 AM
Warlords is actually pretty good, judging by the demo.

It doesn't have the frantic speed of the original, because of the controller substitution, but Atari/Stainless finally made a decent remake.

Frankie_Says_Relax
05-29-2008, 01:10 AM
Warlords looks decent. Wonder how it plays w/o paddles tho.

http://www.destructoid.com/elephant/photo-m.phtml?post_key=87799&photo_key=44373

An even better question is : does it work with the Mad Catz Arcade Stick with the actual SPINNER on it?

(My guess is no, as like, NOTHING works with that damned spinner.)

I spent about an hour with the demo of Warlords last night, playing with what options were available, and I thought the port controlled well with the 360 controller.

The updated version of the game plays slow at the standard speed, but if you go into options and choose the custom difficulty level, you can throttle the game speed to a decent, but not ridiculous, level.

This has always been more of a multiplayer game than anything else, so I can't say if the online for mulitplayer works well. It does support camera use, so you can see who you are playing against, which is nice, and the it is always good to see the classic version of the game.

Unless there are dramatic lag issues with the online play, I think the game is worth the 400 points MS and Atari are charging. But, again, this game is best played with other people.

s1lence
05-29-2008, 02:54 PM
I played Warlords and thought the controls were terrible. They are WAY too twitchy.

They need to make a REAL spinner if they are going to continue with these games.

Wednesdays game is "Aces of the Galaxy". And apparently, it's an on-rails space shooter, a la After Burner/Galaxy Force/Panzer Dragoon but at hyper-fast speed.

IGN gave it a pretty good review, and it looks pretty fun.

EDIT - I have also just found out Roogoo comes out tomorrow, as well. It's also gotten a pretty good review.

Aces of the Galaxy is totally bad-assed. Think Starfox 64, on steroids...

If you like the old Sega system-16 shooters (Space Harrier, After Burner), then this game is definitely for you.

And it sticks to it's arcade roots. No continues. No unlocking stages. You start at the beginning with 3 men, that's it. You die, you start over.

Great game. Totally unexpected. But great, nonetheless.

I'll give Roogoo a try after I go pick up my copy of Nina Gaiden 2, in a bit.

Soul Calibur is definite, because IGN has already reviewed it. And 9 years later, it still gets an 8.1. It probably would've scored higher, if Namdai would quit being so goddamn lazy about including online play, in their games....

I'm not too interested in the Golf title, but Schizoid is pretty fun. Especially with a second player. And if you happened to like Namco's Libble Rabble, you'll love Uberschiziod mode - if the controls don't fry your brain.

Dloaded this and have played it several nights in a row now and must say, while it has promise, it is only ends up being a a C+/so-so title for me, as much as I love golf games. IMHO, it is (barely) worth the $8 (or is it $10?, I keep forgetting the X-change rate). The meager two courses get old quickly as well, though the graphics look pretty nice in places especially for an XBLA game. The game actually has it's challenging and difficult moments and forces you to frequently make risk vs. reward type choices. I assume (hope, at maybe 150-200 points a course, no more) more downloadable courses are otw...hopefully along with better (and more powerful) characters as well and more customzation.
IGN actually rated it an 8.2....interesting...hmmm. On their 1-10 scale I rate it at about 6.8: acceptable but not life/mind-altering...but for less than the cost of a sleeve of Big Berthas, I'll see myself chilling out with it on occasion. ;)
Also would love to see some of Camelot's HotShots Series/Minna No Golf make it over to XBLA...THAT would be f...ing COOL.....Camelot are U listening....?

I like the addition of collecting geons, and the ability to unlock different game modes, over time.. Not to mention the achievements seem a little easier than the first game. Now I have to go get a points card, to buy this, and for the rest of this months releases.

And Ninja Gaiden 2 players - the Mission mode is (again) available for 800 MS points.

GTA: San Andreas (1200 MS points) is available for download today via XBL. I'm sure at this point, most people that had any interest in playing this game have already played it. However, the Xbox version is graphically light years ahead of the dark and muddy PS2 version (even playing it on the PS3 can't help this thing). The downloadable 720p version of GTA:SA could very well pass for an early 360 game if it wasn't for the bland textures. It's crisp looking and surpasses the PC version from a few years ago IMO.

I would think this downloadable version has a pretty limited audience. Especially considering all the must-have games dropping right now. Even so, it's nice to have the definitive version of this game available to play right from the 360 dashboard.

At one point I had the PS2 and Xbox versions but ended up selling the Xbox version on ebay. My rationale at the time was even though the Xbox version looked better, I had 60+ hours of progress on my PS2 save file vs. 5 hours or so on the Xbox. Now that I have this new version, I can't wait to start a new game. If I can even fit it in, that is. Too many good games, too little time.

I would think this downloadable version has a pretty limited audience.

It's an "Xbox Original" or whatever, right? And they don't offer achievements, right?

I agree with what you've said (I beat GTA: SA on my PS2 back in the day), although I'd be tempted to pick it up *if* it offered me Achievements. I *loved* SA - so much so that at first I was down on GTA IV. By the time I beat IV, though, I came to love it equally I figure, maybe a little more.
