This is great! Thanks to AB Positive, Mayhem, and everyone else who helped with this endeavour. I love the complete list. I thought that Bangai-O and Ultima IV would've placed higher, probably Top 100, but, I was wrong. :)

This isn't a request, but I wish that after the point total for each game, in parenthesis, there would be the non-weighted (whatever you want to call it) vote count, so we'd know if a game that got, say, 20 points was voted on by 1 person who placed it 6th, or by say 5 different people who had it low on their lists. Maybe next year...? :D

I agree with blissfulnoise's previous complaints about the top 100 looking like every other list ever. I don't think it could have been prevented though with this many people. I'm sure many individuals had very interesting lists but collectively the more casual people are going to dominate as are the most popular games.

Also, I understand that 25 games doesn't represent the full range of a person's taste. My top 100 has a ton of obscure games but over half of my top 25 are pretty common games. It hurt leaving so many underrated NEC system games out that I would put in my top 100.

I was tempted to not put any super popular(usually big name Nintendo series') games on my list to try and help the underdogs but decided that wouldn't be accurate. I did decide to only take one game from a series for variety's sake although that had the pitfall of leaving out games like Monster World IV and Dracula X.

It's still a shame that Sega's history doesn't get the same respect as Nintendo's. In a proper world Wonder Boy III would be praised as much as Super Mario Bros. 3. At least it made the top 100.

3) Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)

This is where it began, and by that, how the series has been structured in every edition since. There is so much basis and foundation building in this title, it's hard to know where to begin, except to say its expansive world, hidden secrets, mind bending dungeon design and superb ending have made it a stonewall classic.

Personal Take from Mayhem:
I actually got into this game via a friend who lent it to me. The game at that point had been firmly off my radar of buys to consider in my early days of owning a SNES. Guess I have something to thank him for. The game is now my number one pick for greatest of all time.









2) Super Metroid (SNES)

Surprised by the position? Well don't be, Nintendo's third tale of the life of Samus Aran is the probably the pinnacle of the series and definitely one of the most inventive, addictive, replayable 2D adventures ever created. Even Metroids have feelings, you know?

And after all that, you know what? I actually missed out on this game for years because I hated Metroid. Couldn't stand it. Only a few years ago did I pick up a copy just to try it out and bang went the next few nights. Amazing what a change one game can make.

297 Madden 93 Genesis/MD 21



Ok, so the 21 is the number of total points it got right? Did the 21 points come 100 percent from my high vote for it? Or did anybody else vote for it? I feel that John Madden Football '93 for Genesis is quite possibly the best football game of all time, although NFL2K5 for Xbox and NFL2K1 for Dreamcast also should receive strong consideration. I know that most people hate sports, but I have a deep passion for football games, and nothing could touch Madden 93 (Genesis) as far as pure "flow" is concerned. Completely balanced from an offense and defense standpoint. Best Madden engine during it's life before polygons, without question. Best sprite based football without question.

Interesting final list, I've got to say. I'm not surprised at all by the ones at the top, although I have to admit that SMB3 didn't even make my list. Heresy, I know... SMB1 and SMW were there in the mid-teens, but I just never dug 3. Link to the Past and Super Metroid though, they get the big thumbs up (2 and 4 on my own list).

Thanks to everybody who assembled the list. Upon viewing the final tallies, I can assume that it was a complete bitch to work with. Likewise, I thought it was structured quite well for the most part, and I definitely enjoyed it, so kudos there.

However... if I might offer some constructive criticism for next time, whenever and whoever it is...

The first thing I noticed... it seemed like as we went through the list, there were a lot of games that simply read "X game checks in at # X spot". I realize that this is due to the writing staff's inexperience with the game and primarily limited to say, #s 100-40, but it's a little frustrating when you see certain games you love (Tecmo Super Bowl, I'm looking at you) get brushed aside. I don't really know how to remedy this, though. You can't just accept everybody's input as writers because then you're editing or choosing...

Of course, it was compounded by the time frame. I'm not bitching about it, but some have, obviously. I know things come up and this is just an internet message board after all. I think people were angered more by the expectation. Saying you'll have it up by a certain time just puts pressure on you to deliver, and if you don't, then people get angry. If I tell my friend, "I'll have your 20 bucks on Friday", I'd better have it there Friday, and I'd better have close to 20 because the expectation's there.

On the other hand, if I just say, "I'll have what money I can for you when I can", he's much more likely to roll with it. I'm just saying the original thread started a few months back and we were "supposed" to have it all in say, March, I think? April? It almost became like a delayed, buggy game of sorts, you know?

Don't take the naysayers to heart, but if you set them up somehow, well... But really, other than the time thing, what if we opened it up a little more to different writers? Not saying that anybody did a poor job, far from it, but I would have liked to tried my hand at a few, and I'm sure there are others. (And no, I didn't PM anybody because it didn't seem open and it's not my way tto butt in.) It also would have cut down on your time and effort a lot, not to mention added some variety in commentary.

But all things considered, it was very nicely done and I think a general consensus was reached (at least among the 90 or so that submitted lists), so that was cool. Thanks for your efforts, and I hope my comments aren't flame worthy.

I didn't get to vote because I didn't get to it in time, but the yearly sports games are hard to deal with. How do you put Madden on there? I'm of the opinion that, despite some stumbles, Madden has generally gotten better as it has progressed. So, do I automatically choose the latest one, or just the one I had the most fun with? It would be nice if there was an option for "Madden series" or "NHL series" counting as a vote, but then we would get into a big argument over what groups of games count as series. Or, maybe there could be "generations" of games like First-generation Madden would cover Genesis and SNES, 2nd-generation would cover PS and N64, and 3rd-generation would cover PS2, Xbox, and GCN. I left out PC's and the 3DO, so now I'm even more confused.

I would think that some people just didn't vote for sports games because they just couldn't decide which one to take or how to vote for them. It wouldn't seem right to put multiple versions on a list, so I think most people just said "to hell with it" and didn't put any of them at all. Or maybe people on the board just aren't sports gamers.

I'm of the opinion that, despite some stumbles, Madden has generally gotten better as it has progressed. So, do I automatically choose the latest one, or just the one I had the most fun with? It would be nice if there was an option for "Madden series" or "NHL series" counting as a vote, but then we would get into a big argument over what groups of games count as series. Or, maybe there could be "generations" of games like First-generation Madden would cover Genesis and SNES, 2nd-generation would cover PS and N64, and 3rd-generation would cover PS2, Xbox, and GCN. I left out PC's and the 3DO, so now I'm even more confused.

I would think that some people just didn't vote for sports games because they just couldn't decide which one to take or how to vote for them. It wouldn't seem right to put multiple versions on a list, so I think most people just said "to hell with it" and didn't put any of them at all. Or maybe people on the board just aren't sports gamers.





Dude, trust me, I'm an absolute Connoisseur of Football based video games. I was 7 years old, playing Atari football, and working my brother hard with my 3 man crew. I've played every significant football game that exists. I know which football games stand above all others. And they need to receive "individiual" recognition and respect. I hate it when people rate things as "series" or put the system as "all systems" or "multiplatform". I think games should be ranked on the absolutely specific version that you are talking about. Like if you are going to rank Pac-Man, you should pick the specific ass version that you mean. Same thing with sports games. No Football game has ever had the pure flow, and pure balance of John Madden Football '93 for the Sega Genesis. NOTHING. Now, certainly, graphics will improve by leaps and bounds as the years pass, and the speed of the game will be much increased, and the realism dramatically increased, but in terms of absolute pure playability, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, can equate with the bliss that is Madden 93 on the Genny. An absolute classic to define all classics. This was the best pure engine of madden ever. PERIOD.



Now, are there other Football games that have come along and blown Madden 93 out the water? Well, from a graphics, sound and realism standpoint....Sure, there are games that blow Madden 93 out the water, but in terms of pure "flow", and the pure balance of the game from the offense and defense standpoints, the fact that this game hit the scene in 1992, I mean, nothing comes close to this game until the NFL2K series started on Dreamcast. I really feel like NFL2K1 on the Dreamcast was an absolute crowning achievement for that time. The next game to really put things together like Madden 93. And of course, there is the all time current gen version, NFL2K5 for Xbox. NFL2K5 for Xbox, remains the best current gen NFL game in existence. In fact, I would probably rather play it than Madden for the 360. (hopefully things will change with Madden 07)



Here is what I feel are the 10 best football games of all time, with Genny Madden 93 being the best. NFL2K5 is the second best, and the rest of them aren't in any particular order. I rank the original "Football" for Atari at #10, mainly for sentimental reasons, just because it was the first football game I've ever played, and despite it's limitations, that game was a huge force in my household.

Yeah, there are tons of great games that didn't make the cut. But, there are like 5 thousand or more great games in the History of gaming, so anytime you try to trim that down to 100, you're going to be leaving some really good games off the list.


Personally, I don't like the fact that modern games were included. Certainly, there will be a number of PS2, Xbox and GameCube games that will be considered all time classics, but I think it's best to look back at things from at least a 5 year time frame. After 5 years, it gives you a much better idea of which games really stand the test of time. In fact, to be honest, 5 years is probably too short a time. Might even need a longer period of time to really know which modern games will stand the test of time.


I wouldn't mind at all to see a list of the 1,000 best games of all time. I know that people might think that is kinda ridiculous, to rank 1 thousand games, but really, there are so many great games, when you consider all the various platforms and the portables, and arcades and PC games. I'm sure that a list of 1000 games could have a very strong representation. But to do such a list, you would need people to submit their top 100 lists. And you would need a ton of people to participate. Unfortunately, it's very hard to get that many people to sit down and take the time to rank that many freaking games. But it would be very interesting. I'm much more interested in the games that were ranked after 100, the first 100 games are usually pretty much "givens" so to speak.

That is a nice list. The whole 795 game list is good! I liked this "Top 100" poll because it wasn't really trying to be some objective ranking of all the games. It just represents the sentiment and experience of all us Digital Press people. . .well. . .at least the people who voted. . .so really just a tiny subset of the forum. . .but it's still great!

As far as the games that just missed the top 100, I had Shenmue 2 ranked 8th. Which I'm sure is so interesting to everyone. :)

I don't think any modern games should even come close to cracking the top 10, much less top 50. Regardless of whether they deserve to or not. I would say that Grand Theft Auto 3 for the PS2, the first one, definitely deserves a top 10 spot, considering the effect it's had on gaming overall, but it just doesn't deserve those kinda props so soon.

It's like saying Kobe Bryant is one of the 10 best Basketball players of all time. While the statement might be true, it's not something that should be uttered any time soon. It's something that should be looked back on later.


I think 10 years from now, games like GTA3 and Halo and Resident Evil 4 will get their proper rankings, but it's way too early to be giving all kinds of Kudos to those games, at least "Greatest Game of all time" type kudos. They will get their star on the walk of fame soon enough. No need to rush it. That's why I actually would have preferred the list to not even allow PS2 or Cube or Xbox 1 or DS or PSP or modern PC or stuff like that. Should have been Dreamcast and prior to Dreamcast. Heck, even Dreamcast seems to early to be ranking on all time lists. That's just my personal take on it, and I know many will disagree with it.

But, it's all gravy baby.

This is true. In order to be the "greatest", it must also have the quality of standing the test of time. By definition, newer games cannot be the "greatest". Certainly we can pick out some candidates, which I think was done.
