Can't be that much of a surprise since we all figured it would get a sequel anyway, but still this is great news:

I'm pretty sure I heard an announcement a while back that Harmonix is planning to do five or six more Guitar Hero games over the next couple years. Sounds good to me. I can't remember where the news came from, but it was parroted on pretty much all the major music game web sites.

I think if I had to buy just one game for the rest of the year, it would be this one. No Zelda, no FFXII - just this. Of course, that isn't actually going to happen...but if it needed to, I'd get this one.
Just for fun, I've gone through my iTunes playlist and picked out some stuff I'd love to see in GH2. This list could've been longer, but I adhered to the 'one song per artist' policy that Harmonix seems to have going on:
Tool - Aenema
POD - Alive
Lenny Kravitz - Always On The Run
System of a Down - B.Y.O.B.
Marilyn Manson - The Beautiful People
Nirvana - Come As You Are
The Beatles - Day Tripper
Dave Matthews Band - Satellite
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
Collective Soul - Shine
Soundgarden - Spoonman
Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out)
Nine Inch Nails - The Hand That Feeds
Stone Temple Pilots - Vasoline
Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
The Smashing Pumpkins - Zero
There are plenty of others I'd like to see, but these are the best of the ones I actually own. What do you folks want to see in this version?

This is the best videogaming news Ive heard in I dont know how long!
If you ask me, they should have a really diverse and just plain crazy at times playlist. I mean, I want to play all kinds of stuff.
Songs Like:
Dueling Banjos (Imagine this two player!)
Back in Black (Naturally)
Renegade by Styx
Something along the Punk-Ska lines, like the Suicide Machines
Misirlou by Dick Dale (The song from Pulp Fiction)
Something by Van Halen (Eruption perhaps?)
If there was some way to do it, perhaps the guitar section
of "Bohemian Rhapsody", but they would need to get this spot on for it to work.
Man, the possibilties are endless, all they need to do is keep putting out these great covers of songs and harmonix may as well be printing money. Ill gladly buy 5 or 6 GH games.

I'd love it if the new one had ANYTHING by the White Stripes. Seven Nation Army would be the most obvious song, but almost anything from them would be great (and challenging) to play. Danzing or Misfits would be a blast to play too.
And although I know it wouldn't happen in a million years, a Suede or Smiths song would be great too.

*Warning - Rant*
In the very near future, technology and the inclusion of massive hardrives onto consoles means that theortically, you could burn a song to the hardrive, and get it auto converted into a Guitar Hero or DDR track, but with piracy issues and the way these companies can squeeze out expansion packs with ease and cheaply, it ain't gonna happen.
*end rant*

No, you cant. There is no such thing as 'auto converting' and even if there were, it would be totally lame. With something like DDR, making a set of steps is very, very hard to get the timing down to certain beats (be it bass, drums, guitar, vocals ect) and there is also a certain 'pattern set' that the game follows. As for guitar hero, same thing. It would be even harder, because in this game you actually create the music, like, if you screw up, the note is not played, and you get silence where there would nomally be a note. Again, there are paterns present, and timing for GH is arguably even HARDER to do.
One thing that would be awesome if something like Step Mania (homebrew PC DDR game) could be put onto consoles, so then you could play it on a console (duh) and have an unlimited amount of songs, provided people out there make a stepfile (or guitar file, I guess)
Add to that, all the varying difficulties, videos that may or may not be played, any "specail" thing each song may have, it just isn't possible.
I'm waiting for the game that lets you use two guitars, one for bass, the drum from Taiko Drum Master and a microphone. Then all my rock star dreams can come true.
Well, first, the Guitar Freaks / Drum Mania game in japan (and arcades) combines those two, where you can have a bass, guitar, and a realistic drum-set combined and have an awesome time. No dancing there, no arm waving (Like Para Para Paradise, and Dance Mania) no mics (kareoke rev.) no button pressing (Beatmania or Pop'n Music) and whatever is "next." But, rumor has it that because the PS3 can have up to 7 controllers, that the next thing to come will be 'Concert Mania' where it combines some, if not all of the games listed. THAT would be all kinds of awesome.

this is great news indeed.
for those talking about loading anysong into GH have to understand a few things that will make this highly improbably. for guitar hero it requires 2 main sound tracks for each song: the guitar and another for the rest of the instruments. reason for this is that the guitar sound is easily to manipulate and turn off when its separated from the rest of the recording.
if you were to load any recording into GH there would be no way to take out the guitar track to make it play with the software. the only the close to this is the vocal removal software out on the market, the only reason this is successful is that most lead vocal sections in songs are panned in the middle of both speakers. this allows the software to remove similar sound frequencies that are between both speakers. really the only game possible by thise method would be karaoke games.

Meh, this is on topic enough for this thread, anyways, I hadn't heard of this game until you just mentioned it. So, I looked into it, hoping that it would look cool, but that just isn't the case. The look of the game is unimpressive, I understand disc swapping is neccecary, but come on, everything they've shown is lame. Speaking of that, the dance charts on the couple videos I've seen are also lame. VERY easy, and the only thing they are with the music to is the beat. When the song stops, or vocals stop, or anything like that, arrows are still going up the screen. Randomly generating such a thing is very hard, if not impossible, to do, and I dont know why they bothered, because it just dosn't look at all impressive. Its been delayed quite a bit from what I can gather, and I can only hope they are coming up with a better way for the arrows to generate, as I would just love such a thing. I just dont see it happening.

GH would be impossible to import some mp3 because you would need to isolate a guitar track and that just can't happen without lots of human discression. now ddr could by isolating the beat and rythm.
great news, played the 1st game enough to no it's a better game/controller then most gun games (super sccpe anyone?)

But was I right, in a sense?
In the fact that an auto generator exists, yes, you were. I think 'how well does it work' would be the next step after that, because if it dosn't work well, it isn't going to sell, and wouldn't matter. A GOOD generator that can do what step coders can do would be great, but that wont happen.

well there is a better possibility this time around to get the bigger names. You have to remember the first time around they weren't sure how well it would sell, so they had a decent budget, but not enough to get songs from people like Aerosmith, Led Zep, and Pink Floyd. I know some people are saying what about Ozzy since he is big, he gives his songs out like candy, especially towards games. Also since the game has gotten a lot more fame, those big ticket stars and their record companies will say "Hey this game can sell my records!!", so it is very possible to see a lot of big ticket stars bone up and give their songs at a decent price for them to use.

Copy/paste from Penny Arcade a couple days ago:
Just got an E3 PR blurb for Guitar Hero 2, and I was overjoyed to hear that it listed a few of the playable songs on the new game. Observe:The top-secret sequel song list remains firmly in the rock domain, with more than 55 songs being featured in the next installment.Confirmed for E3 are seven playable tracks including: "PsychobillyFreakout," "Strutter," "Who Was in My Room Last Night," "You ReallyGot Me," "War Pigs," "YYZ" and "Arterial Black." Also confirmed arein-game appearances by returning guitar hero Judy Nails and the newRockabilly guitarist. For those of you playing the home game, we're talking about Reverend Horton Heat, KISS, Butthole Surfers, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, and Rush. Looks like Drist is back in, too. Pretty big news.Thought you might be interested.(CW)TB

Take this for what you will, but I was talking with an employee at one of my area EBs the other day about GH. He told me he's heard that Van Halen, Kiss, Metallica, and AC/DC songs will be in the new game.
He said it was just something he heard, so he doesn't know if it's true. I hope it is, though. I'd love to be able to play Seek and Destroy, or Back in Black.

Those bands being in GH2 are pretty likely, but there's absolutely no way that employee wasn't talking out of his ass. The song list is one of the most closely guarded things in the business right now.
Speaking of which, there's another rumor going around that the FULL song list is gonna be revealed at E3. I don't see this happening, but it'd be pretty awesome to find out so soon (and it'd make the wait that much more difficult).
Also, appearantly the pre-order price for this is $89.99. They've already confirmed that there won't be any changes made to the guitar, so I wonder what the big change in price is about.

Hmm...weird about the price. From what I heard, the guitar from the first one will work fine with the second. Are they still holding true to that? In that same interview I remember them mentioning the game will now have rhythm tracks as well as bass. Ugh...I'd feel sorry for the poor bastard who gets stuck playing the bass track ;D.

Is there any confirmation about the guitar design yet? I'd love to see a flying v or warlock, but no telling.
Speaking of the guitar, has anybody picked up the shredder guitar yet? I've got one on the way, but am still trying to find info on it.
I was looking over the little teaser track list, and it went like this.
Cool.
Cool.
Cool.
HOLY SHIT... WAR PIGS. \m/
Man, that's awesome. If the full list is revealed, I'd be happy. Though, I know that some people are gonna take it like a dagger in the heart since the game isn't coming out for a few months, and finding out the awesomeness of the track list would make the wait that much more painful. But I gotta say, I'm impressed with what they've done so far. Here's hoping that the Eruption intro is in there for Van Halen, the whole balance of the song rides on it. Without it, it's probably the easiest, with it it's probably the hardest. >_>

Like I said in the E3 thread, (and someone else mentioned before me) Activision announced that they are buying Red Octane, and I couldn't be happier. This should allow them to get more music rights, based on money to spend, and the activision name. I've heard rumors that all of the songs have been picked already, but this might change that. Hopefully it wont change the release date though.

I know it's a longshot, but I'm really hoping that they jacked up the price because they are including a effects pedal accessory that you can activate the Star Power with. I never liked tilting the guitar to activate it because I always loose my space in the song when I do. A pedal would be SOOOO much better and add more realism to the GH experience.

A couple of new things:
- Primus has a song in the game, and it's NOT a cover. They lent their master tracks to Harmonix, so the real thing is in there.
- Expert mode will have 3-note chords. That should make for some interesting note progressions.

Of course, that would never happen since peoples' limbs would fall off trying to do Disposable Heroes on Expert. <_<

I mean, the song is alright, but 95% of the songs in the regular part of the first game I had already known. From the 5-6 songs already mentioned, it seems like they are going a little more obscure, and in such a game, I dont really like that. There are a lot of big names that need to be included in this game, the classics, and they need to be focused on more than Everytime I Die and the Butthole Surfers.

They should focus on songs that are good and fun to play, and not necessarily "big names". I doubt half the kids who are addicted to this game like crack cocaine gave half a shit about who Davis Bowie or Cream were prior to playing Guitar Hero; the programmers picked the songs because they are good songs and fun to play, not because they're popular. (Of course, that's not to say that Bowie and Cream and all of the other bands aren't popular--it's just that they aren't popular with the majority of the people who love this game.)

Most artists have their work on other download services anyways, why not take more money from you fans!

I finally bought Guitar Hero 3 weeks ago and I played it for 3 hours straight. I already have II on reserve. My boyfriend heard that the controller for II will be a Flying V. I just love how the game is exclusively Gibson, since Gibson is my favorite guitar company ever. I have my very own SG and it is the best guitar I've ever played.
But there better be AC/DC on this version or I'll literally cry. I heard that Harmonix tried their balls off to get permission for an AC/DC song for the first one and they were denied. Now that has to be their manager being a dick, I can't see Angus Young being that full of himself that he doesn't want his riffs on a guitar video game with an SG shaped controller. I mean, the guy was modest as shit when I met him on the 2000 Stiff Upper Lip tour. They better have gotten permission for this installment. But then again, why am I complaining? I can play a bunch of AC/DC songs for real on a real SG. Still, I haven't heard anything else new that wasn't already mentioned. I'm highly anticipating War Pigs
My god though, this game kicks ass so much and I wouldn't have waited so long to buy it but I had to because I didn't have the money. But they could come out with 20 different versions and I'd get them all.
My boyfriend's band, Umbilical Cord, should subit a song for the Be a Guitar Hero contest. That would kick ass. They're a lot better than last game's winners, Graveyard BBQ. And I'm not just saying that because it's my boyfriend and his brother LOL

Every day I'm getting more excited for this game, and I'm listening to the music nonstop. Even "Strutter" which is slowly turning me into a member of the KISS Army.
After reading the complaints about the "unknown" bands in the songlist, I thought I'd do a public service and upload some sample clips of these 2 songs for the people that never saw the videos on Beavis & Butt-Head (yes, both of these were on B&B, that's where I first heard them!)
The Reverend Horton Heat - Psychobilly Freakout (http://www.spaceballsthewebsite.com/yashiro/yashmusic/psychobilly.mp3)
This could very, very easily become one of the hardest songs in the game. And one of the most fun.
The Butthole Surfers - Who Was In My Room Last Night? (http://www.spaceballsthewebsite.com/yashiro/yashmusic/inmyroom.mp3)
This could very, very easily ROCK YOUR GODDAMN FACE OFF. Proceed with caution.

Three new confirmed songs:
Stone Temple Pilots: "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart"
Anthrax: "Madhouse"
Motley Crue: "Shout at the Devil"
All \m/, but I think something from STP's Core album would have been better fitting.

As much as I'd rather have Sex Type Thing or Wicked Garden, Trippin' has an awesome guitar solo in it. That's going to be hot stuff.

Sweeeet additions! Love all those tracks. Would have really prefered Sex Type Thing though...I love playing that on guitar. Wicked Garden would have been cool too, I've never tried playing it though. Shout at the Devil's kinda the most bleh, I would have LOVED to have Live Wire instead.

Freebird. Maybe all 10 minutes of it. The video for it is crazy, the roughly 10 seconds of actual notes you see.
