that Haunted Castle PCB. Is that any good, anyway?
The game or the board? The game itself is a version K, so isnt the mind numbingly hard version M. Its tolerable.. depends on your actual tolerance for the game itself though. Many hate it LOL. The board is fine, I tested it in a Supergun rig a week or two ago.
You planning on completing the Megadrive set, and getting a Japanese Vampire Killer?
Yes actually! I think Ill add that in to my thread in the Buyer/Trading forum. VK is actually one of the most expensive console Japanese games to collect in the series, it ranges from 150-200 USD even on Yahoo Japan auctions.

Awesome collection. :) I think I have a pretty good Castlevania collection, but that whoops mine, hehe. I have almost every US release up to Circle of the Moon (the CV games after that just don't appeal to me much), as well as a couple Japanese releases (including Rondo; I actually had two copies at one point). I feel pretty content with the status of my collection, but I'll have to get that PS2 port of Haunted Castle sometime. I'd really like to put some more time into that game, but I'm just not into playing games on my PC and I'm not crazy enough to track down the arcade board. :P

Those complete kits go for about 100 dollars actually, which isnt a bad price considering. One of them was on ebay recently:

The Oretachi Game Center port is a decent way to do Haunted Castle on a console IMO, second only to a modded Xbox Mame emulator. Its the Japanese version, and is a reasonable difficulty so can be beaten, with minimal emulation bugs. The extras are nice too, a trading card, a mini DVD with superplay/a music video, and a 3 inch CD with the OST and a supersweep remix. The extras help make up for it being $20 + for a 20 year old game like that.

But seriously, I have a friend who is a huge Castlevania fan that's going to go stir crazy when he sees these pics. Do you collect memorabilia that isn't directly part of a specific Castlevania game? Stuff like wall scrolls, posters, etc.? I'd really like to get the original Konami NES box art poster again. Used to have it but my father threw it out years ago.

The Akdra 1993 cart re-release is pretty hard to find outside Japan, hardly ever shows up on Ebay. But Ive never seen one go for more than 250 dollars complete. I payed about 130 total through a service and Yahoo Japan.
I suppose the collection isnt small. But It hardly compares to some of the "rooms of doom" displayed on this site, so I tried to be humble :) . I am missing a few odds and ends still. Boku Dracula Kun, Lament of Innocence Limited Edition, Vampire Killer (European, MSX2), Vampire Killer (MD). Etc etc.

Not mainly, I own a couple of the OSTs. Dracula Apocalypse, Nocturne in the Moonlight, Castlevania Chronicle. I have an original Castlevania Chronicle poster that was put up in Japanese shop windows before its release date, and one of the generic SOTN wallscrolls. But not much overall. I actually want one of those original old CV1 NES posters quite a bit too, but they're very rare. I saw one on Ebay last year go for about 60-70 dollars.

I dont actually own that OST no, I kind of thought of Boku Dracula Kun to Castlevania as Parodius is to Gradius respectively until recently, I finally picked it up the other day for the collection as it has Galamoth and some other amusing throwbacks in it.

Im a castlevania game collector also. I have nothing compared to what you have though. I own all the US games except: castlevania 2-belmonts revenge (Gameboy) & castlevania legends (game boy color). Which i plan on someday finding. I don't have any of the japan versions etc. But i wish i had Dracula x recondo of blood. But mainly thats all i feel the need to have. Just the US releases and recondo. I just got a couple of cool Castlevania legacy of darkness promo items from NESVIDIOT. He's a member on ROOM OF DOOM also..He's the got with the insane mario/ dk collection. He traded me a Legacy of darkness poster and display box. You have an amazing collection!!! I think its impressive that you have all the different versions. AWESOME! Yeah that collection of castlevania games is not small. 8-)
Here's the castlevania games i own:
Castlevania - nes
castlevania 2 simons quest - nes
castlevania 3 dracula's curse - nes

Not bad at all. Which game is the best to play?
Arasoi
06-19-2006, 10:43 PM
Hmm.. tough to say. Opinions will vary on that (perhaps some other 'vania fans will share theirs as well)
Tough to say, so many choices.
I guess Id go with Symphony of the Night. The classic gamer in me cries out in disgust at this, but the game is the peak of the series and hands down the best one in it, despite it being nothing like the tough as nails old side scrollers.
The rare version that is missing here is the Amiga version..quite hard to find those days, complete in box
Rarer than IBM PC versions.
Arasoi
06-20-2006, 05:07 PM
As someone who has done a huge amount of research into the Amiga version, I will state that I do not believe that version was ever commercially released. No box scans exist of it anywhere, and the ROM that exists by novotrade does not match the screenshots on the back of the CVPC box, which shows the Commodore/PC/Amiga versions.
http://dinosaur-act.ath.cx:8000/cpg/displayimage.php?album=247&pos=1
This ad exists, but shows no different screenshots than the back of the Castlevania PC box. Furthermore, a ROM dump of the version actually advertised does not exist. Only the Novotrade version, which looks vaguely like the PC version, but is quite arguably the worst Castlevania game ever made. My suspicion is that the Amiga version was canned before it even hit the shelves.
I still have hope there WAS an Amiga version actually sold, but until I see box/disk scans I will remain extremely skeptical.

Residentvania and Mills, your collections are quite nice too.
Thank you for the kind words. I've been trying to get as much castelvania stuff as I can find. For some reason I feel it would be really awesome to have a ton of vania stuff.
Although I rarely like to buy games from ebay or through any online means, I feel alot better finding the game extremely cheap in a dusty old store. Thats why its harder for me to find the more rare titles.
I had all the NES versions but I sold them for alot more than I paid for them. They can be acquired again very easily.
Dracula X I got for free from a friend.
The gameboy titles i got for 5 dollars each. Mint too.
CV IV I got complete and super mint for only 14 dollars shipped.
The rest from best buy, walmart etc. Right now I really wnat legends. I would LOVE to get all the older ones complete. I love seeing gameboy games boxed.

I understand the desire to collect the old fashion way, digging through bins and looking through glass cases, wiping dirt off covers in a dirty swap meet box. Its fun to work to find your stuff.
I collected most of my NES Black label carts this way, I only got Stack Up and Gyromite off Ebay.

I don't think I saw it in your picture, but do you have the us version of "kid dracula"?
Kid Dracula doesnt have any relation with Castlevania, does it? I have the GB version.
EDIT: Found this with Google :)
Kid Dracula is a very weak link to the Castlevania series...a label on the cart that I own even calls it "Castlevania Jr." It has very little to do gameplay wise to the CV series, even though music from it was featured in the Dracula Music Collection CD that came with Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight for the Playstation.
I wouldnt count it as a CV game tho. Like i dont count Cannon Spike and Capcom VS SNK as a Mega Man game because he is in the games.
Arasoi
06-21-2006, 03:20 AM
It does in a few odd ways. Kid Dracula is actually supposed to be a young Alucard. Additionally, Galamoth from Symphony of the Night had his first appearance in the Famicom version.
BTW, are you willing to sell or trade that gameboy kid drac? 8-)

Out of interest, what do you reckon to the two N64 games; is it worth playing through both of them? I did play the original, but I'm interested in how much the game chaged for its upgrade.
Arasoi
06-23-2006, 02:32 AM
Good question.
The original Castlevania 64 was originally intended to have 3 or 4 playable characters. Reinhardt, Carrie, Cornell, and a character who never appeared in either version named Corler, who is believed to have been turned into the invincible Frankenstein monster in the garden maze for the final release.
Basically, Legacy of Darkness is what the original release SHOULD have been. More levels, 4 unique playable characters with different stories and play modes, and more polish. An added bonus is it works with the expansion pack, though it doesnt add much IMO besides smoother edges.
I also played CV64 first, and LOD second. I found it to be a bit more of an upgrade, its a significant enough improvement to warrant purchase and playthrough.
I hope that helps. :)

Actually, there are tons of people out there who have more CV games than I do (I just have dupes of a number of them, and no plans to sell them right now). As far as jealousy, nah, I'm over that.
Right now I'm working on Contra stuff, anyhow. Though I could go for a DXX Holy Bible, as well as the guides to the FC CV games...
