Default Is RE4 scary or is it just gory?

My wife enjoyed watching me play Fatal Frame 1&2 because they had some scary moments...like when a ghost shows up outta nowhere. Is RE4 scary or is it just really gory? I found Silent Hill 3 to be a drag. Something would pop up out of nowhere every once in a while, but on the scary scale, it was nothing.

I'm not a fan of the genre, so I can't really make much in the way of comparisons. I did play RE4, though, and I'd say it is pretty creepy, but not scary in a make-you-jump kind of way.

Not really scary or gory to be honest.

I wouldn't really consider RE4 scary, since it's more action oriented and you're able to move more freely, but there are some intense moments in the game. I think survival horror has kind of lost it's flare over the years, since a lot of them pull the same tricks and don't try to go for anything new.

I think the next generally scary game will be the new Siren game, I played the demo a few times and it's creepy as fuck. It gave me the sense of panic that's been missing from past games of the genre and if a short little demo can do that to me, I can only imagine what the finished game will be like.

This really doesn't belong in Classic Gaming.

    **Shimmy to Modern Gaming**

And its all about atmosphere. Thats where the scary really falls into place. If the atmosphere is a weak one, people are less likely to be scared, plain and simple.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

For me, it wasn't scary, but it was definetly interesting.

For me, the scariest part was....

    SPOILERS!

When you are trapped in the house and are sorrounded by the villagers.

    That was classic.

In case you didn't already know this, there's a Fatal Frame 3.

Well worth it if you two enjoyed the first two.

And Fatal Frame 4 is nearing release for the Wii in Japan, I imagine we'll be getting it here this fall.

RE4 is scary...plain and simple. There are some genuinely tense moments that happen during your first playthrough (when your ammo is low and your weapons are essentially just pea-shooters). Who here wasn't frightened by their first encounter with one of those Regenerators? I'm sure some internet tough guy will chime in, but I'll just call B.S. right now.

My wife would freak out on a regular basis while she watched me play back when the game first came out. RE4 is one of those games that is as fun to watch someone play as it is to play it yourself.

Its hard to explain, but I've never felt scared by the RE games, including 4. It keeps you tense and feeling stressed and nervous, but they never gave me feelings like Fatal Frame does.

RE4 scary? At time, yes. (See invisible insects in dungeon basement and boss fight with Calazar's Right Hand.)

Making the game more action-oriented puts a damper on the game in the scare department. The stiff and still backgrounds for the first three Resident Evil games help atmosphere build tensions and ready to jump at the moment's notice without knowing when or where the threat will come next.

    AHHHH!

I think it comes down to atmosphere. With the lights off by yourself with a nice sound system games can be creepy. I remember on the ps1 doom the babies crying was some freaky stuff. Painkiller had a freaky on for me the level with the witch or goblin flying on a broomstick.

I presonally didn't find it that scary. But there are a lot of moments that are intense enough that you might get scared.

I was just having too much fun with the rifle to get that scared though.

Resident Evil 4 isn't the scariest RE in my opinion. I think 2 or 3 are scarier. But perhaps the most important thing while playing Survival/Horror games is to have the surround sound on and the lights out. Also disconnect the phone line

yeah thats true, that makes almost every horror game scary...sometimes I find myself pausing the game I'm playing and stare into the dark part of my room thinking something could pop out any minute...I get goosebumps playing like that.

The best horror games are the type of games that mess with your head hours after you stop playing, RE4 isn't like that. But if you play it in the right settings and atmosphere...its creepy while you play.

Regenerators were pretty creepy for me, I'll never forget the first time I had to face that guy with the knives and the sewn eyes, that was intense but as a whole the game is more intense then scary.
