I think it's speculative to say whether they took the touchscreen idea from Nintendo or not. Look around next time you're in public. *Really* look. When I'm in the lobby at school, when I'm at my daughter's ballet class, everyone around me has some kind of touchscreen device, either an iPhone, an iPad, iPod, or some kind of Android equivalent. The ballet studio even has free wifi, so we all sit there on our devices idling time away. Nintendo adopting a touchscreen on the Wii U certainly helped push them over the edge I'm sure, but touchscreen devices are everywhere.

There were other devices that had touch screens long before the 3DS. PDAs had touch screens in the 90s, maybe earlier.

The Newton is not the first device with a touch-screen and handwriting recognition, though. The Linus Write-Top incorporated both six years earlier in 1987, but the user has to train the Write-Top before it will recognize their handwriting.

Searching a bit more in Google, I've found that touch screens were first developed in the later half of the 1960s.

The thing is, the DS made touch screens popular again. Just like how tablet PCs were seen as bulky and essentially useless before the iPad, touch screens were associated with PDAs where you couldn't really get anything done on.

I'm not saying the DS didn't make touch screen gaming popular, because I know it's the first time I've ever played a game on a touch screen device, even if there were other devices out there that could. But it's the second post someone has made in this thread that implies Nintendo is the inventor of everything and everyone else just copies Nintendo.

I'd say that Nintendo can often be the Apple of the gaming industry, as in they come up with ideas that other companies take and make far better, but then I realized that they still have the best motion gaming.

It looks like a cheap, lazy HK knockoff of a 3rd party PS controller or the world's most unusual ipod. Either way, I call fake 'til I see something more concrete.

Even if it were real, the screen is just dam too small for my taste. If Sony is copying WiiU, I expect the touchscreen to be similarly in size and proportionality to Vita or PSP cause Dreamcast VMU's look bigger than this.

Hahah so true. Sega was a pioneer in shaping the gaming industry. They took risks no one ever dared to. Others looked at their failed attempts and refined their ideas.
