The triple-H (haha) series was a big favorite of mine as a kid. Goodness, I should dig them out again.

Also: No, "abandonware" isn't legal, so stop decieving yourself! I don't care too much what you're doing, but don't give yourself excuses that aren't legit.

Freeware titles that initially come to mind:
Cave Story is an endearing platformer that most of you have probably already played.
Gateway (Frederick Pohl's) is one of my favorite text adventures.
No-Action Jackson is a LucasArts-style adventure game (very DoTT).
One Must Fall: 2097 is an extraordinarily fun fighter from the DOS days that has aged well.
Torus Trooper and the rest of Kenta Cho's shooters.
Ur-Quan Masters is the freeware port of the inimitable Star Control ][.

Only freeware that comes to mind is the game that came with retrogamer issue 2. Arena Runner, don't know where to find it now but it rocks for the music alone.

    Dungeon Crawl
2 awesome, but fiendishly hard roguelikes.

    Photopia
A unique, nearly puzzleless text adventure. A piece of art.

They're not freeware, But I like the Avernum series and Geneforge series that Spiderwebsoftware have made.

    http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/

In avernum you have been cast down into an underground series of caverns, Far away from the empire and you fight monsters, Do services for towns (No, not sexual services, Killing theives and humanoid cats and humanoid lizards) And survive.

And as for geneforge, There are beings called Shapers who have the ability to mold life as they see fit to make servants.

In geneforge 1 you are forced to land on a Barred island (Meaning it is illegal to go there) And you find that it was once a place of prosperity, Or rather a place for experiments. An experiment caused the place to be barred, Or so it appears.

In geneforge 2, You are an apprentice and are going to check on a small town that is in a wasteland. I can't say any more or I will spoil it for you.

I won't say anything more, But download some demos for these games, They're all good.

Doom isn't freeware. They released the source code, but the data files are still copyrighted and all that.

Anyways, most of my favorites have already been pointed out except for:
    • Abuse (A great platform/shooter game with great atmosphere and an innovating control scheme)
    • The Marathon Series (Actually, I didn't much care for these games... but the storyline is well done, and the Mac guys certainly enjoyed these)
    • God of Thunder (A great Zelda-style adventure game with a lot of puzzles, humour and fun!)
    • Jetpack (A great Lode Runner-esque platform/puzzle game)
    • Squarez Deluxe (A strange puzzle game. Actually, not that great, but it's made by the same guys as the previous two games, so you might as well get this one while you're at their site)
