Aside from this nasty business I actually got my first really factory sealed games. 5 3DO Games for 2.99 each, all but one were factory sealed, NiP. Its nice and all but im not particularly interested in collecting NiP games. Kind of boring how you can never play them and you have to baby them to protect the plastic and such.

Damn Sonicwolf, how come you get to have all the fun I missed the whole freaking party. Back on topic, I've noticed lately that some sealed games that use to command a nice premium are now going for much less. Snes games like Super Castlevania IV and Super Metroid use to get $100 or more but now they can barely get $50(especially SCIV). And all their buy it now auctions for $80-150 just sit there forever. I hope this trend changes because I still have sealed copies of each but I don't plan on selling them for another few years or so.

The noobwhore war was fun .

I think that digital downloading and the virtual console are starting to degrade the pricing of games now. A lot of people would rather spend 5 - 10 dollars to play in high resolution on their Wii then pay a premium for sealed games. I have noticed the Mario RPGs prices on eBay have been crashing in the last year.

I think you're right. Add to that the fact that more and more compilations seem to surface each year and the sealed game market looks even more grim. My sealed copies of Ninja Gaiden Trilogy and Ninja Gaiden 3 seem to be holding their value but all my N64 sealed games have taken a nose dive over the last year. The only thing that might still make bank is Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time collectors edition but with so many re-releases even it has suffered price drops

In a way, for collectors like me with a small collection (516 games, 68 systems in comparison to other forum patrons) This is an advantageous time as I am becoming able to afford games I previously could not. I do feel sorry for those who have built up a collection based on value.

I think it might be just that a lot of collector's are moving on, so some older games are losing value, but newer ones (Such as N64 and GameCube) are going up. At least that's how it seems here in the UK, so maybe it's just the US which is experiencing a dropout at this time. Bear in mind that it's now the summer months when people generally buy less games, new or old. eBay is also going downhill lately too with all these new policies which is driving away would-be sellers and also potential buyers

I also don't think the modern day digital rereleases really affects the values of some sealed games. People who collect such things do so for various reasons. Most collect for the sake of collecting, so there will always be people out there who will prefer to own a physical product rather than a hard drive with data on.

Well, I think what happened in the past two years was really an artificial price bubble. People paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars for games that were manufactured in the millions of units in some cases is absurd. This whole practice of buying at a high price and trying to flip the game at a higher price on Ebay was something that kind of just came along and really skewed values. The addition of an attempt at grading and "professionalizing" the hobby if you will also falsely inflated prices. The lower prices now are just the natural cycle of people realizing they overpaid for stuff and supply increasing as new copies are found and more people sell at a loss.

Bojay1997.......that's probably the best and most accurate (imo) explanation of the current sealed game market. It's sellers like Dov (a seller with a large quantity of games) that are really putting true pricing into perspective. If you took the resellers out of the mix, the prices would be even lower.

First of all I do not think that downloading games from PS3store or whatever does effect any prices of sealed games.

Like gemini said...there are a lot of people out there who want something physical in their hands.
Furthermore: Why should it infect the sealed collecting??? Sealed collectors want the first release....not a game for download or a 7th release on the Nintendo DS.

It can be, that the prices are going down at the moment....but who cares??
I collect sealed games since some years and I know times where you got (for example) a sealed Mario RPG for 150 Dollar...for some month it was going for 700+....and now for 450 Dollar. And I could bet....when this game isn't in ebay for 3-4 month...the next one will get 700 Dollar again.

The actual problem is that some so called "collectors" who have 2-3 sealed games for reseller reason see those prices and throwing their games on the market to get a nice gain.
If those games are in REAL collectors hands...prices also will go up again.

When you look at the collecting (and pricing) scene 5-10 years ago...you can see a lot of differences.

I wonder if there also were some noobs 70 years ago who said to a collector of Marvel comics:
Are you stupid??? Why are you collecting this shit...it is worth a Penny.
And now??? 320 000 Dollar for the first Superman comic....huuuuuh.
    It is all about conditions....
And yes...you can compare comics and videogames.

But sealed collectors should not collect because of the money...that is stupid. Collecting should be fun...no matter if the games are used or sealed.

    @sonicwolf
nice catch your sealed 3DO games...
You can't understand why people keep some games sealed and never play them??
If I wanna play a game...I will buy it for 2 Dollar and play it It is that easy.
And I can also have it sealed.

Theres always going to be a market for sealed games but the prices for 16 bit era games (to the present) will continue to fluctuate greatly. One of these years people will wonder why they paid $300 for a sealed greaest hits version of Final Fantasy 7 when there are millions of copies out there.

As for downloaded games and rereleases, sometimes they lower the value of the original and sometimes they don't. The release of the Dracula X Chronicles on Psp did not kill the demand for the Pc Engine game Dracula X, nor did it greatly lower it's price. However, the rerelease of Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout on the PS1 not only killed the price of original opened copies, it also significantly lowered prices of sealed versions as well. Opened original copies use to command $100-250. They now get $5-20. Unopened copies use to command $300-600. You'd be lucky to get $100 for it(I've seen several end for $40-60 each).

So I suppose it depends on the game as far as rereleases go. I think we need to make a new topic for that discussion. But as far as sealed games are related, the market will continue to fluctuate and I personally would never try to "invest" in current gen sealed games as a future cashcow. I do have several sealed games from previous gens, but they were either kept sealed because I never got around to playing them or were purchased for a cheap price after they wer already proven to command a sealed premium.
