Interesting writeup. Not to beat a dead horse, but don't you think it's possible the ROM image was corrupted over the years? Another reason to dump 'em while they last.

ince it was a proto it is very likely a test demo to see the gameplay and it's functionality and when it passed the test they would go ahead and finish the game and remove all bugs. The narrator problem seems like a glitch not fixed because it was not that important during testing so they decided not to fix it. I believe this more than the bitrot theory although eproms do rot more and are more prone to general corruptions more frequently than regular roms so it's still possible.
