Default Taboo: The Sixth Sense (NES)

Taboo is one of the most misunderstood cartridges on the NES.

Notice I didn't say "game," as its not a game. Taboo: the Sixth Sense is a tarot card reading program. This is where 99% of the reviews and criticism of this game on the internet get on my nerves, as they tend to be basically idiots who did zero research commenting on something they don't understand, judging it against expectations it was never designed to meet. In essence, complaining that Taboo isn't interactive and doesn't have much gameplay is like complaining that Adobe Photoshop won't walk your dog for you--what the hell were you even expecting?

I should note that yes, I believe in this stuff. No, that does not stop me from making fun of it sometimes, especially when every book on the subject of Tarot seems to have a different interpretation of what each card means, and that's before you get to what Joe Average would think--the most famously misrepresented, for example, is Death: every horror movie has a tarot reading where somebody gets this card and they take it literally, when in fact its usually supposed to mean a more metaphorical death--IE a major change in the course of your life. "The Lovers" similarily is misunderstood (though it can mean what you think at times) as is "the Fool" (who isn't a moron, simply an ignorant guy. The suits of the major arcana supposedly tell the story of his journey and enlightenment)

    So back to Taboo.

The program starts by asking you your name, gender, and date of birth. It somehow uses this information to show you what card represents you. This isn't random, as I always get the knight of cups when I enter my info, even if I use a slightly different name (I've used both "Jimmy" and "James").

After shuffling, the cards are placed in a pattern known as the Celtic Cross. I'm not an expert, but basically each card in sequence represents things like where you are now, what happened in the past, what's going to happen, what people think of you, and what events are happening or about to happen that may affect you, ultimately leading up to a summation. This is another thing people don't quite get--I remember Seanbaby's review in particular taking each card on its own, at face value, which is not what you're supposed to do, but rather you're supposed to consider all the info you've been given.

After all that, you get a thing telling you your lucky numbers. This is one of the few things that annoys me as you have to pick your state, and my state didn't have a lottery at the time so its not represented here (I tend to pick a state immediately adjescent to mine).

    .........

Now if you want to have some fun, read the manual. Taboo came with a thick (for an NES game) little booklet, and on each and every page Tradewest was desperate to remind you that this is just for fun, just a party game (which I can actually see that being true), and it won't really summon demons or devils or if it does, its totally not their fault, but yours for messing with intangible forces, you asshole.

Now, in all my years of using Taboo, I have never seen it manifest anything paranormal. Well... actually I have noticed that sometimes when the cards are arranged on the cross, one of them will wink or something, which that's creepy and I'm never quite sure if I imagined it, but that could be just something programmed in. I've never--[turns aside as a demon comes up to him]--Oh, hi Bob. The onions are in the drawer over there. [Back to you] As I was saying, I've never seen this game manifest any dangerous forces, and I don't know why my cat keeps growling at my closet, but surely that's unrelated!

So take my word for it, Taboo is 100% completely safe! It is in fact not Taboo at all!

Now I'm gonna go astral project by consuming illicit substances, which is also totally safe and won't lead to me getting both hospitalized and possessed (or even possessed by hospitals...)

Heheh, I always thought it was funny how you were supposed to cover your NES while in use to keep the spirits in.

I never owned Taboo. However, I do have memories of it as one of the first NES carts I ever saw hit the bargain bin as a kid. At Schnucks, a grocery store, for a long time they were stuck with a pile of them, and I remember staring at that sun logo and thinking it looked creepy. My mom scared me up pretty good when I was a little boy about never messing with the occult, which from her cast a pretty wide net, so while I'd curiously kind of poke around the display, as there was an allure to any cheap NES game to me, but I didn't dare get too close as to touch it back then.

Later, as a 19 year old, I was assistant manager at a FuncoLand and had several copies of Taboo, so my coworkers and I would joke about it. One if my buddies there put it in the display NES and tried to use the lucky number generator to pick lottery numbers as a bit. He didn't win. Still, it was really funny to have a laugh at the cart that seemed so dangerous when I was young.

There's another tarot game for the famicom disk system. It has a nice, dark ambience but I can't understand a thing.

    I wanna see that booklet.

Well that depends on what religion you subscribe to. You might want to consult your local preist/rabbi/holy man before playing. You surely dont want to risk eternal damnation. Better safe than sorry.

Given Nintendos strict content policies and general fear of religious backlash (how many nes and SNES games had crosses removed? Even Devils Crush was censored when it came to the Wii virtual console) the fact that this game was even released is kind of mind-blowing.

I always found taboo to be an interesting application. a friend of mine in high school had it and she was into the subject matter before. she had the game but no system infact she picked it up on a whim because the sun on the label was nearly identical to one she had on a set of tarot cards she owned.
knowing even then I was into old game stuff I grabbed a system went over with her to another friends house and they invited a few other girls over and we played the thing....
I being the only male, no parents home, a bunch of high school tail and we were playing this damn game instead of having real taboo coitus type things going on being all of us freshmen in high school.......

    ANY WAY...

we played this for a few hours, other people got bored and left but the core of the group (my self, the she friend and 2 other nerdlet girls) kept on with it.

the thing that struck me as odd was considering the game and its size, because physically its a pretty small rom size obviously, a lot of work went into it. in fact I would be fairly certain that the information for the music of the game would take up more than half of the space used on it. the selection screens, individual card screens and slight animations (as animated as they can get) all show that even though its silly that they put a decent amount of time and effort into this thing.
possibly too much time and effort for what it is but they did it any way.
my favorite part of this game is the music, its obvious with the lack of any thing else going on they tried to jam as much as they could into the sound processing with out the sound processor slowing it self down with all the noise its trying to generate. its fitting, its catchy and in my opinion does as much with the sound on the NES as many of the later releases of the system like megaman 5 and 6.

@niku-sama: Rare developed it, and they usually did a great job in the av department, and taboo is no different.

People talk crap about Rare's nes games, but I'd say about 80% of them are actually really awesome. They just had that British design philosophy of maning the games ridiculously hard, like Reflections and the Shadow of the Beast games.

So, yeah, it's a pretty game. This makes me want to go down and play it...

they certainly had a way with their code it seems.
didn't they do slalom on NES as well? I always thought that game had a different feel to it as well.

I mean there were a lot of games by that time that did that same sort of perspective, like rad racer or space harrier but slalom felt like it was a bit smoother and more fluid in the movement

    Yes, they did Slalom.

The story is a bit hazy for me because it's been a long time since I read it, but in Steve Kent's History of Video Games book Chris and Tim Stamper talk about how their relationship with Nintendo started. When they approached Nintendo to express an interest in developing for the NES, Nintendo, in all their racist glory, were very skeptical of these Brits and told them they could develop if they figured out the dev kit on their own. The Stampers plugged away at it and were not only successful, they found some programming tricks along the way that weren't well known. It gave them an edge over other developers in some areas, which is why their games look so slick.

I enjoy Slalom, it's pretty decent to play every now and again. I'm not a big fan of Rare games overall, I don't hate them but they've made more lousy games than good ones over the years. They're an average developer, not a great one.

That's fine, just as long as you're not gonna lecture me on how superstition is the root of all society's ills or something like that.
