Default Naval Combat sims on consoles.

I was thinking about Secret Service on NES and how cool it was back in the day... and realized that they dont make any Sub games for consoles anymore.

Yeah I know theres alot of pc stuff but no Destroyer Command for PS2 or Xbox.

And sure cant think of anything on psx or n64 era machines.

It just seems like Flight sims still get a little love. Ace Combat and more recently the Lucas Arts game "I forget the name a sequel to secret weapons of the 3rd reich" But I cant think of any Sub or really any Naval Combat sims on any home console since.

I dunno anyone know of anything im missing?

Theres just some kinda itch about sneaking up on a convoy and putting a Liberty ship to the bottom that no FPS or flight sim can scratch.

From what I remember, 688 was a more advanced version of Silent Service. Check out the rom sometime to see if you like it.

    Default Koei games

There is the PTO and the Naval Ops series from Koei. Naval Ops for the PS2 is still available at a few online retailers and used on Ebay. There was Sub Commander, but that was a European PS2 release.

The Naval Ops games for the PS2 are about it for the modern consoles, are they very deep and tuff IMO. They're kinda like a micro naval mechines game, though the graphics are pretty detailed.

I know you said consoles, but there's a very competent Jane's Surface Warefare simulation out there for PC's.

It's a few years old, so any current PC can run it just fine. It's VERY detailed, as you'd expect a Jane's game to be, so if you ever want to know what it's like to actually be a Surface Warefare Officer on a Naval vessel, play that game.

Check out Sub Rebellion for PS2. It's more action oriented, though.

It sucks (IMO), and is little like it's namesake, but there's always Super BattleShip on the Genesis.

Buy Silent Hunter 4, you must have a PC to be posting here.

But it might be too complicated for you if you're looking for a Ace Combat style submarine title.

Still something to consider if you don't mind trying to play a simulation.

yeah pto is good but its more a strategy / tactics type deal
And like most other options people have mentioned seem to be shooters or action deals or else pc stuff.

I remember finally figuring out you needed to plug in both controllers to do all the stuff in silent service like when you dived and realeased crap from the torpedo tubes.

I even snagged a special controller somewhere to play it... Man I wonder where that is, it was before I had any idea game stuff was worth anything but I have never again seen a first party NES controller with 2 pads in one.

Im gonna try to dig up a pic of this because just thinking about that controller is driving me nuts.

Appreciate the feedback Ill try out 688 finally and see if I can dig up naval ops on ps2 if it isnt strategy stuff.

Silent Hunter 3 is by far the best submarine game ever but it's a PC only game. Check it out:

Battlestations for Saturn (and perhaps PSX) was an odd little game, if I remember correctly. It allowed you to conduct improbable naval battles with more of an arcade feel than that of a sim.

It had a top-down view and let you pit a PT boat against an aircraft carrier, for example....and both handled pretty much the same way. Silly, but fun for a bit.
