Strider on....Nintendo?! Well, not really. Surprised this little gem isn't in the gamer's eye much given how they loved Strider. Sure Run Saber took inspiration of the Arcade classic but can Strider do co-op?
Enjoy!

Nice review on an excellent game. I bought this a few years ago and never played it. I pulled it out a week or so ago, and my son and I LOVED it. Yeah, maybe a tad bit on the "easy" side, but that's fine by me. For my 3 year old, it gives him hours of enjoyment.

da da da RUN SABER
*theme of Renegade Saber*
Also, "Samur Aran," nee Parkreimer?
About the actual narration, eh. Skipping through (yeah, I didn't sit through it all) nothing grabs me, and I don't really care about this whole trend of throwing in lots of irrelevant pictures, I'd just rather get the point in 3 minutes or less like Xoxak tends to do it. Props for using a real system, although the capture looks funny.
Run Saber = great. Pretty good review, you hit all the high notes.
Personally, I think Strider is still superior to Run Saber, despite the nifty new tricks Run Saber has. But it's a great game and deserves to be played by any Strider fan (as does Cannon Dancer and Shadow of the Ninja).

Does anyone know the name of the Japanese version? Can't find anything on eBay under just 'Run Saber'.
Nice video. I will be keeping an eye out for this game now.
By all indications, Run Saber was not released in Japan.
One of the first SNES games I had, and still a favorite of mine. Excellent work!

That picture seems to be from a PAL cartdrige (or bootleg) cause it has the "Super Nintendo" red lettering instead of the Super Famicom one. Also has the american/euro Nintendo seal of approval.
GameFAQs says that it was a US and Europe release only... that doesn't absolutely mean that it didn't have a Japanese release, GameFAQs is far from perfect, but I searched around and found this thread...

Evidently the Japanese site linked there says that the game was planned for Japanese release, but never actually released.
This did happen you know, once in a while. Think of StarTropics, both of those games were developed in Japan, but neither one was ever released there... the first was US and Europe only, the second US only (though Europe did finally get it on Wii Virtual Console).Originally Posted by Press_Start
I have looked for Run Saber on the SFC...not that I'm better at it than anybody else, but I've never turned one up.
Pretty interesting considering Atlus' history of domestic releases / skips.
Dire 51: Eh, don't tell me fiction writer is your day job.
Wow, I had no idea the Japanese version was never released. That glitchy prototype that's floating around has the alternate boss graphic, right?
It's not. But at some point, I plan for it to be. That story excerpt up there is part of what I've been working on for quite some time. However, it will never be published in that form. That's strictly rough material.
Back OT: So Run Saber never got a Japanese release. That explains why I could never find anything on one anywhere.
Contra Force is hard to believe period. Also, we at least have evidence that Ark Hound was at least planned for Japan; they just decided to foist it off on America first. At least it's a better game than The Cyber Shinobi (SMS is sort of a breeding ground for these regional "exclusives," less explosive than duds, but at least Australia got a random arcade port of Shadow Dancer).
Not to mention all the SMS games after 1989, NES Strider, Spy Hunter, Freedom Force, Fester's Quest, Monster Party, Adventures in the Magic Kingdom, Karate Kid... Plenty of Japanese-developed games (for some reason or another) don't see a release in Japan.
A. It's not intended to be a "weak slam" on Run Saber. I love RS, I don't want to trash it. And where you got the idea it had something to do with the quality of RS' graphics vs. Strider's, WTF?
B. It's not supposed to be funny. Besides, wouldn't you agree that it's hard to judge an entire story based on one small excerpt?
C. When the final version of the story that excerpt came from comes out, it won't have any videogame references at all in it. No Strider, no Run Saber, just all original material. That whole sequence, along with a good portion of the rest of the story, is being completely rewritten. This was just a bit from an early draft of the story posted for kicks, since we used Strider and Run Saber as placeholders.
No one else commented on it, they probably just rolled their eyes and kept going. I expected as much. So hey, forget I posted it and let's move on.
Back OT: Yay! Run Saber! I really should play through it again, because I spotted what I believe are a few references to the Miyazaki film Laputa: Castle in the Sky in the Grey Fac stage. I'm working on a comparison article for the Light Sword Cypher Mainframe website right now that details them.
