I've been on a major repro building kick for the last few weeks, thought i'd share some pics.

NES Labyrinth (English Translation) (PAL)
One of my favourite films, had to have the game on cartridge:)

NES Splatterhouse (English Translation) (PAL)
Thanks to MottZilla'a amazing MMC-3 hack i can now play this on a real NES:)

SNES Sanrio World Smash Ball (English Translation) (PAL)
One of the most fun and addictive SFC games i've played

http://www.playntradeonline.com/dp/sanriocart.jpg

SNES Dragon Ball Z Hyper Dimension (English Translation) (PAL)
This is the translation of the Japanese version, not the crummy French release that's missing the story mode. The first SA-1 board repro i've built.

SNES Star Ocean (English Translation) (NTSC US)
Built for a fellow DP forum member. Was really impressed by the game, am planning on building one for myself now:)

http://www.playntradeonline.com/dp/socart.jpg

http://www.playntradeonline.com/dp/sopcb.jpg

SNES Little Magic (English Translation) (NTSC US)
Again, built for a DP forum member. Simple puzzle style game, but incredibley addictive.

I'm always available for custom work if anybody needs anything built (repro's, homebrew manufacture, console mods, hardware design, etc). I'm based in the UK but can happily deal with PAL or NTSC carts and consoles.

Why'd you replace only one of the roms for star ocean? Where you still working on it?

Nevermind that question, I never noticed that the last two megs of the J and translated are exactly the same! So you only need to replace the one... So you just put the first 4 megs on the flash chip, correct?

Yes, the translation patch doesn't affect the code on the second chip so it can be left as it is.

What media do you use for cartridge labels? Does it have a gloss or laminate on it?

I use HP high-gloss photo paper, has a great "sheen" but is fairly suceptable to damage if it's aggressively handeled, and it needs to be glued down.

Here's an example of my work ...

What did the actual game companies use, dye sublimation, laser, thermal? Ideally you'd want to print onto something with gloss and is a label, so you don't have to glue it on.

WOW you use really huge wire. You ever try and use smaller wire??? ive made a few repros myself and its MUCH easier with smaller wire. I get mine at radioshack, i forget the exact size though. ill have to dig it up, been awhile since my homebrewing days.

Actual NES game labels are 4 color press printing with a layer of fine laminate and a very very high tack/industrial/permanent adhesive on the back.

I've just been using Sumvision adhesive-backed photo paper. Results have been very good so far, even better since i replaced my old Epson printer with an HP Photosmart D5160.

This just makes me wish I had the money to get eproms... I have the equip to do repros myself as well but... grarg. Stupid real life getting in the way... ;)

For those that do repros - I'd be curious about label ideas as well. Printers that would be worth it and so forth. Or, like the homebrew RPG world... would Kinko's be a good idea?

I think the reason the snes repros look so thick is because for some folk it's easier to solder using stripped IDE cable - solder the first and last pins, then solder the rest as it's held down. then separate wire and presto. :D

So it sounds like if you use a high dpi inkjet or a color laser, and print on a pre-made label, you just have to apply laminate. I think that can be done with a small roller. The difficulty is if you knew the exact kind of industrial material that was used, or you want to use, you have to buy it in large quantities usually.

This guy's work is very impressive.

He did a Starfox 2 Repro for me that has a switch on the side to go between the translated version and the Japanese version.

These are the pics he sent me when it was done (easier than me taking pics of it since they are already out there).

Also, I have this cart right next to me, and I assure you, anything that looks pixelated in the pictures is not pixelated (cept for the game itself, it was made using pixels, hehehe), but the label and stuff is crystal clear.

This guy is the real deal. Fine work bro, very high quality.

If you have the time, I'm getting my tax return soon and would like to buy a good bit of repros off of you if you are willing to make them for me.

Here is a request list...

Seiken Densetsu 3
Terranigma
Star Ocean
Tales of Phantasia
Dragon Quest VI
Dragon Quest III (anyone know if the translation is done yet?)
Live A Live
Rudra no Hihou
Romancing SaGa 3

Drop me a PM. Thank you.

Also, I recommend setting up a site for this alone. It is damn near impossible to find a site that makes SNES repros.

Well, like 8bitsunshine said, it's probably gonna depend on the game AND maybe depend on how many you're getting at once. And if his costs have gone up at all, he'd be expected to commit to the prices he gave the last person even if (for some reason) it was costing him more now. I respect 8bitsunshine not sharing that info.

I PM'd Pootle, but I probably can't afford ALL of the games I'd like to get anyway. :D

BadChad
03-22-2009, 04:52 PM
Basically pricing depends on the amount of eproms needed, and the donor cart whitch can vary depending on the game you want. What I always do is ask Pootle whitch games are suitable donors for the games I want made and I find them at hockshops or from games I dont play and send them to Pootle to save some money and time for the both of us. And shouldnt be to hard if you know a few places that still have snes games.

Example:
Secret Of Mana 2/Terranigma (Hi Rom Cart) = NHL 95, 96, 97, NFL 95,96,97

Shouldnt be to hard to find since most places that still have SNES games will most likely have a few sports. And for that reason they should be next to nothing. And if not there only like 2$ each on ebay.

8bitSunshine

I will recommend pootle's work as well. My repros (there are six of them) are on display at the bottom of page 2.

Madden 95-96-97 also all work like a charm as HiROM/8k SRAM donors, for example, with most RPGs like Seiken Densetsu 3, Terranigma, Final Fantasy V, Tales of Phantasia (this one is on my "next" list :)), Live-A-Live, Bahamut Lagoon, etc. - Anyway, whatever the game, there's a donor for it. Just ask the man.

AND, I've been enjoying Seiken Densetsu 3 a few times this week in 3-Player Mode with a few pals, it's REALLY AWESOME! LOL For those who played the game as one player, I'd say it's kind of a whole different experience. I wish you could all enjoy it as well!
