Excellent day at the swap meet.

I bought a complete final fantasy 8 for $3.

Then I went to the game dealer there and traded that for $20 in credit, which I used to purchase a complete legend of dragoon and a complete wild arms 2. ^_^

YAY wild arms 2 and legend of dragoon for $3.

Flea Market

-Star Control -CIB - Genesis - $6, a bit more than I usually pay for CIB Genesis games but I figured it was worth it on this one.

-Mr. Bones - CIB - Saturn - $4, I've always wanted to try this game, and for $4 for a complete copy, I couldn't pass on it.

It's not too often I post pictures now-in-days but shucks, it's been cool. Parden the quality, no AA batteries for the camera so I'm stuck with 1.0 MP in bad lighting. I sized them down 50% because the blur was terrible at 100%.

So I finally received some MVS games in the mail that were a pretty penny but exactly what I've been waiting to pounce on, now there's only a few other dozen plus games I need in similar condition and package. I ran to a friends house Friday to test them out and see what he thought and get some gaming in.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c196/cyberfluxor/10508-snkgp.jpg
First is Ghost Pilots. Not a huge hit among many but is one of the nifty 1942-like arcade games I've wanted in my now starting MVS collection. I did a full run-threw on Friday night and this game is long with insane difficulty (1cc on difficulty 8 is BS, please post a video or it didn't happen!). The planes are a bit large and I knew this, but it's a nifty characteristic of playing this. Played on emulator so it's nice to have the real deal now.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c196/cyberfluxor/100508-snkam2.jpg
Then there is Alpha Mission II. This is all around fun times for me and 2-player is intense. Had the chance to play through twice and got my ass handed first time around, but improved a good bit on the second run. The power-ups are a must and a second player is nice to hold off half the screen. Upgrading is difficult since I require at least one credit per level but was interesting as to how some of the specials work.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c196/cyberfluxor/10508onshelf.jpg
Here they are taking up lots of space on one of my shelves. They're almost the size of PC big-boxes! I've seen them in complete kits at other people’s houses but never a side-by-side comparison against PC stuff.

On Craigslist a friend messaged me about a C64 being posted for an unknown amount, possibly free and with any number of things as it was being advertised along with a CED player with 30+ movies. So I ran by the guys house and he wanted to discuss his son playing WoW but knew little about computers, modern or classic. He wasn't "sure" about a price so I said straight up $5-10 for systems and $5-12 for boxes so with his goods maybe $10-15. He wanted $20 but was good with $15. I hate negotiating prices but figured with the condition $15 isn’t too bad, if it works…

Box
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c196/cyberfluxor/1050864cin.jpg
And here are the inside contents. Two power blocks, serial cable, and sleeves. I'm hoping some C64c people chime in *cough* Flack, and could give me a pointer about how to test this baby out and see if it runs. What other parts do I need as this is quite incomplete which is why I shot down his $20 offer, otherwise complete I could compromise paying the dude a bit more. How much to complete this bad boy? I looked on eBay and am not going by the wierd pricing out there.

Shipping on that is a pain and you're not quite up the road. However, I'll be up that way for MAGfest in Jan. I'd prefer to keep the price down on getting one running as the market for them is stale and rough to come across games locally let alone a replacement monitor. I've seen a floppy drive around here once and passed on it, not thinking that months later I'd need it! So unless there are some parts you can let go of it may be hard to work out a deal. :-/

Both of these together cost me a grand total of $25. Both CIB with all paper work and everything. When I saw Streets of Rage 3 underneath a pile of crappy Genesis games, I nearly pooped myself.

Excellent. Another PXL-2000 owner in the hizzy. Very nice. The carrying case makes it a sweeter deal. I have the TV for this as well. Don't be too surprised if the record mechanism no longer functions (it's still usable going straight to VCR though).

What is that?

It's a Fisher-Price Pixelvision (PXL-2000) movie camera. It's a very unusual video camera because it records very lo-fi black and white video footage on regular audio cassette tapes. It's a choice tool for film makers who desire a very grainy, distorted image. The camera has actually gotten a small following of "Pixelvision enthusiasts". These days a Pixelvision camera is pretty hard to find and goes for a good amount on ebay. I happen to know about these because I do some stuff on the circuit bending scene, and the Pixelvision is a popular visual circuit bending device.

I haven't found much of anything this week...

USB 1.44MB Floppy Drive - $3. I tested it and it works fine. I've been looking for one in order to back up and play several of my older DOS Games - including Powerhits Movies (http://www.mobygames.com/game/powerhits-movies). (Speaking of, disk 4 is unreadable. :( Hope the damaged disk contains The Rocketeer, ugh.)

Edit: Well I just found a download for the CD version of this, so uh, guess I'll be using that instead!

Ryu PS2 Pad - $4. It was a bit beat up but it works perfectly, but I can't get used to the D-Pad.

Arrived in the mail today from Amazon:

PlayStation:
True Pinball (complete, R7) - $11.98 shipped

Probably overpaid a bit, but this is now my rarest PlayStation game, and it puts my pinball collection at 44 games.

(I just need Extreme Pinball and Pro Pinball: Timeshock! and I'll have every pinball game released on the PlayStation in the US.)

It always takes me a few days before I have something to post in the new thread....

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3181/2923088364_30e7a76664_b.jpg

Flea Market:
Game.Com with Monopoly - $5 (because I wanted to see how awful the thing really is)
The Magic of Scheherazade - $4

Library - October and November 2008 (!) PSM - $0.25 each

Church Thrift:
Sim City 3000 with manual and guide - $2
The Sims: House Party - $1

Funny thing about SC3K, the manual and guide were rubber-banded together and marked $2.50 until today. The game itself was marked $1, so they charged me $2 total for it. They also have a few more of the Sims expansions, but I don't think I really want them that much. The first two aren't too far from the "people simulator" idea, with the latter ones being more "controlling." I liked The Sims as a simulation, not as a way to live out idealistic lives.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3059/2923086630_c5d7d78605_b.jpg

Two other thrifts I tried today:

Turok 2 (with Forsaken) - $3, complete, I supplied the bag+board for the Shadowman comic; Why do I need to install Turok 2 before Forsaken??? (DirectX versions?)

Diablo ("Mac" edition on box, but the disk and manual say Win/Mac) - $3, complete, but I gave the manual to a guy who remarked that he had a disk-only copy; I got a manual in my Daggerfall box at the other flea market a few weeks ago, so I'm still complete. I've never played it!

I love finding complete PC games. Especially when they have the cardboard formers. ^_^

And not pictured, a USB Iomega Zip drive! $5 at the fle market. Came in the box, complete except the driver CD, even in the static bag with the registration cards and stuff. I've had an IDE Zip drive since back in the day, and it's now in my Win95/DOS box. Now I have a way to transfer games and drivers over there without burning a CD.

My first finds in what seems like forever!

I went to a local resale shop that I saw advertised on Craigslist. I called ahead, and the guy told me he definitely had an NES that he'd sell for $20. I drove out there and waited for twenty minutes while he rooted around his store's basement for them. He ended up giving up and pretty much telling me tough break. Ouch.

On my way home I decided to stop at a thrift store I'd never seen before. I walked past the racks of clothes on a beeline path. They actually had a nice selection! I passed on a boxed Game Gear for $7.07, but I did find what I wanted! I picked up a toaster NES with one controller and an NES Advantage. There was no price on it.... Go figure. The woman told me, in broken English, that she'd get the "Electronic guy" to come price it. He looked me dead in the eye and asked me if $9.09 was "do-able". I eagerly obliged and took the system.

Feeling good, I browsed their stack of games as well. For $1.21 each I took home Simon's Quest, Ghosts n' Goblins and Wizards & Warriors. I can't really complain about an NES and three games for just over $13, right?

I got the system to the car and opened it up. Sitting inside was a copy of Dragon Warrior. That's what I call a bonus! I guess the only downer was the lack of ac and rf cables. Anyone have a set they'd sell cheap?

I never understood thrift stores with their random prices...$7.07? $9.09? $1.21? this thrift store I go to sells everything at totally random prices. they had 2 NES controllers, one was $4.36 which I bought...the other was $4.87.

I love the toaster NES 'bonus'. I've gotten a Dragon Warrior II that way and an MTV Remote Control. Probably a couple SMBs, too.

You are much better off just using the composite hookups for that NES than the RF. For an AC the thrifts near me usually have the ACs all hanging separate, and it isn't too hard to find one that will work with the NES (it can take ~9V AC or DC, and about 850 mA or higher). If you just want to buy one, I've got some spares... I pick them up when I see them at the thrift, so as long as I don't lose money on it we can make a deal. They are usually 2.95 or 3.95.

A certain Genesis A/C works as well. The one I've confirmed is kinda gray with the connector being an L-shape, not straight like an NES one. Then again, the NES that was used with that plug has slightly noisy RF output, moreso than the NES that I grew up with does (which is very clean and crisp over RF).

Yeah, the Genesis model 1 will work (the model 2 has a different type of plug, but would work otherwise), as will the SMS. The NES is the least picky console I know of when it comes to power supplies. Please don't go the other way, though!!! An NES AC adapter supplies AC current, and it'll fry your genesis or SMS (or almost anything).

They're fairly hard to find since only two games used them, the cocktail versions of Galaxian and Space Invaders - although if I remember correctly the Space Invaders cocktail knobs are silver. Came to about $10.00 after shipping, can't argue with that.

Here's a picture comparing an original control knob to the improvised one I had in my Player 2 panel. A creative bit of engineering by some arcade technician in the past but it really did start to bother me that the knob wasn't original. The picture below that is of one of the new knobs now installed in the Player 2 panel.

http://www.classicplastic.net/digitalpress/finds/DP-Finds-2008-10-08(02).jpg

My Player 1 knob was fine so I end up with a spare, which never hurts. This was the last bit of restoration my machine needed (fix coin door lamp, install coin mech, adjust monitor convergence, replace Player 2 control knob) so now it's 100% original functional. I still need to replace the glass clips with some new ones and hopefully that reproduction underlay with more accurate colors will be available soon. I may replace the topglass eventually as well, since there are the usual scratches in it.

Have you ever noticed, as you go about flea markets, garage sales, thrifts, swap meets, craigslist ads, so on and so forth, that most people have horrible tastes in games? Referring in general to bulk deals. Even when 10 bucks for a working system is a great pickup, you still end up with 20 copies of wrestling/sports games and some incredibly mediocre action games more than you ever see even one or two good games mixed in, regardless of monetary value.

What I find funny is when they have one or two reall gems thrown in with the crap. The SMS lot I bought was all a bunch of common games, but then there was a cart-only Phantasy Star. Every other game was boxed but that one, so they must have bought it intentionally.

I hit a church bazaar this morning but only found one gaming item. It is box, manual, and four player adapter for F-1 Race for the Game Boy. The adapter appears to be brand new since it is still wrapped in the plastic bag. Now all I need is the cart and it will be complete. I paid 50 cents for it.

Honestly, I think this is because of their low trade in values, people just tend to keep those games around. They might of had some keepers back when they played the system, but those have long been since pawned off to trade-in stores to fund their next-gen purchases. That's what I think anyways.

edit: Also, kids generally make less than stellar gaming choices, I know I did. And I believe kids make up for alooooooot of gaming purchases.

Here is the start of the month for me:

Grand Theft Auto 4: Special Edition (360) - I told my pops it was going for 62 at Target and told him he should wait until they drop the price, but he got it for me anyway for my B-Day, so right on for me.

Target stuff:
I got these today when I went to get my alarm clock:
Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law (PS2) - 14.99 (I have been meaning to get this game, and it was laughing with me, so I had to give it a chuckle and buy it)
Dark Star One (PC) - 2.48 (I was told this game is super badass, and at 2.48, who am I to judge?)

Random Finds:
Tiger Jeopardy LCD Game - free (this is the one that comes with a catridge slot to put more questions in. My older brother found it and gave it to me since he was too lazy to find another cart with questions and already knew all the answers to these questions).

Dark Star One is neat. It's one of those French-developed games, if I'm not mistaken. This one is a bit better than most from the few minutes I played.

Yoshi's Cookie and a NES cleaning kit for $1 at a yard sale.

Now I have 3 NES games and no nes because they go for $60 here. Could anyone hook me up with a cheap one?

That makes me glad actually. One of my friends tried to make me play it to pull me away from SWG since I always boast about ship customization in that game.

$10. I don't think I have Barbie, so hooray for adding to the collection!

$10 for the N64 stuff, and a dollar each for the games/dvd. I love the Nightmare Before Christmas, so happy to pick up the game (in great condition).

... and the coup de grace...

Unfortunately I can't really make use of it, so it is for sale. If you can't make it out, that's PC2-8888 CAS4 1111mhz.

I also grabbed a free PC they had. dell dimension 4100. I haven't tested it or even looked up specs on it, though it appears to have an extra hdd and a gforce vid card.

Great finds as usual Cornelius. Those SuperPad 64 controllers are my favorite controller for the system - should have been the default controller design for the N64 in my opinion.

Yeah, I've used these types of pads before, and they work great and more importantly, they don't seem to wear out. I'm not sure they'll ever feel right to me though, as I only ever used the regular ones when we'd play goldeneye and MK back in college.

Do you know if they are worth anything (I've got a box with several more of them)? Seems like I've seen them go for a fair bit, but they seem pretty common, and I can't remember for sure.

I figured it was just going to be a cheap way to add memory to my current PC. Actually, I left the sale and drove a few blocks before turning around to go back for it. Then when I got home I looked up the price and I decided I'm better off selling it and buying some regular stuff.

At that same sale I missed out on a Dell Inspiron laptop for $10. Nothing too special, and no ac adapter, but hey, 10 bucks woulda been just fine.

I don't think they go for much but they're one of those things that when you're looking for them you never can find them - but when you're not they're everywhere. When I got back into N64 recently (because I came upon some really cheap systems and games) I wanted to buy one, having seen them almost every week at the flea market for over a year. Sure enough once I wanted one, they were nowhere to be found. One day I thought I hit paydirt only to find that it was a MakoPad PC. LOL Did come across one a couple weeks later, however I had to fight to get the price down to what I wanted to pay ($5.00) and I had to reconnect the cable inside the controller because the connections were loose.

Sega CD - Lunar the Silver Star (complete) -- $10 (video game store)
GameCube - Resident Evil Zero (sealed) -- $2 (pawn shop)
Sears Video Arcade II -- $5 (thirift store)

I wouldn't have even gone out today if I hadn't driven a little bit out of town to pick up a FREE Apple IIGS Woz Limited Edition computer w/software, monitor, drives, etc. So this turned out to be an even better day today.
