I was like that when I got my copy of SMB 3 for my NES, giddy as all hell. While I didn't have that kind of childhood (making up for it now when I find games I want for the old consoles), the excitement level in your face, and I knew you were genuinely excited for each and every game you ever received.
A feel good topic for sure, even though there is a tinge of sadness within it (my dad passed in 06, never could get him to play video games with me, but we watched a lot of sports events together).

This video is amazing; your family seems amazing. My family was sort of broken and dysfunctional, and I never had the opportunity to have holiday moments like these with my own daughter. It feels really good to see some of what I missed, and I hope no one ever takes moments with these for granted. I know you and your family didn't, and I think that we're all lucky that you shared some of these intimate moments with us.

Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
Doing the math though, and at $50 - $60 a pop, are you sure your family was middle class? We would have probably had 3-4 games each, not a tower of 16 or so.

Thanks! Yeah, we were. My parents went all out on Christmas. My Dad always looked for good deals, and I think a lot of the games in that one insane year from the video were used. Prior to that one year where I got all those games, it was like 3-4 games as you said.

"This is an amazing retrogaming find! We’ve come into possession of a lost SEGA commercial that has never seen the light of day… until today! We can’t exactly reveal our source, but my goodness is this ever cool. This unaired commercial for Phantasy Star must have been commissioned to air during the 1988 holiday season. For whatever reason, the project got shelved and was never released. We are happy to share. ;) "

Master System labels reflect light, that's probably just a reflection rather than label wear. and either way, who cares? This was still an amazing video.

While it is a fairly professionally put together piece, I guess my humor is lost on this one and I fail to understand the accolades being given. The least that should have been done would have been to state that it is a parody video in the OP and/or thread title. To attempt to lead viewers into believing it was a genuine ad is more than a bit misleading, is it not?

Heh seems some folks are divided. Yes, we made this as an homage to the classic Sega commercials from the 90's. It may not have VHS degrading or be full frame, but I hope we captured the spirit of those classic commercials.
A question to those who didn't care for the piece... would you have liked it if we hadn't played up the Lost Commercial angle? Honestly we were just having a bit of fun with that.
Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Commercials back then were way, way more incoherent than this. I guess it's an interesting idea, at least?
I remember watching some really great 80's-style video parodies about the Internet; I wish I could find them.

it honestly didn't feel old enough. it just felt like a modern commercial and not because of the picture quality.
ShinobiMan
12-21-2013, 08:22 PM
Wasn't it enough though that we were actually making a modern commercial for an old Sega game? This was our love letter to the Sega commercials of old. It pokes fun at those classics as well as holiday jewelery commercials. It was always our intention to make a modern Sega commercial. I just labeled it "lost" as a sort of fun angle.
I'm not expecting everyone to like everything I do, but I've gotten so much positive feedback and I made this with Retrogaming fans in mind. I'm trying to understand better what was wrong for the detractors.

As a grown man in his late 20's, I enjoyed this effort very much, but if you were to do another and wanted to capture the late 80's or early 90's Sega commercial feel, you need to keep in mind that those commercials were made targeted squarely at kids, specifically boys aged 8-12. As such, a Phantasy Star commercial where a man gives his wife a game isn't the kind of ad Sega would have made back in the day.
At most, an 80's style Holiday themed commercial with the same idea might have been a young boy giving Phantasy Star to a girl he has a crush on. Sounds silly, but in the absence of finding kids to act in your videos, if you and your wife pretended to act like 10-12 year olds and did the same commercial again but from the boy gives his crush Phantasy Star angle, then I think the original feel of those old commercial would be more fully realized.

I'm glad you really enjoyed it man. I'm a 27 myself and we probably were exposed to Sega in very similar ways, especially the classic commercials with the Sega scream. All I wanted to do was parody Christmas commercials. This was like a "what if" a Sega commercial was done like a holiday jewelery commercial.
I'd like to continue in this parody fashion. My sense of humor lends itself to satire and parody and I just enjoy doing it. In future projects I'll lose the whole "lost" Sega commercial angle. I'll still call them "lost" but I won't play them up as if they're real.

I really enjoyed this as well and ended up showing it to a few friends (who also loved it). Mostly we were jealous of a girl with such fine taste in video games
Not that it ruined it for me or anything, but I think it would be best without the "Lost commerical" angle--IMO it works best as a Christmas jewelry commercial that morphs into a 90s toy commercial, and to leave the gag at that. (Only the title seems to give away the "lost commercial" angle, but then again, maybe that gets some people to watch who otherwise wouldn't?)

12-24-2013, 03:51 PM
Yeah. Your video was awesome and left a warm place in my heart, but it doesn't work as a 'lost' Sega commercial because again, those commericals were aimed at boys aged 8-12, not grown men 20-40. I share your sense of humor, which is why I thought it would have been especially hilarious if you and your wife pretended to be about 12 years old during the video to be both a parody of everything you mentioned but also those aimed-at-boys Sega ads of yore.

That is how you fake a retro video. You have to throw away not just the technology, but all of the advances in graphic and video design that have come to feel like common sense over the passage of decades.
(Of course, the CuteMouse driver only became popular long after Windows 3.x was extinct, but let's not get too picky.)

Hey guys! Happy New Year! Wanted to share our latest video with you. It's the 2nd in a series we started way back when we first launched the site. In the SMS Hunt, we check out local retrogaming shops and look for Sega Master System titles. This time around we went to FX Game Exchange in the Dallas / Fort Worth area and found Monopoly... or Mono Poly?
As always, would love feedback. I actually shot this entirely as a one man crew and we were having restrictions on time with the employees. I still hope it's enjoyable.

Hey guys! Thought you guys would enjoy this. It's an old school Sega Master System video I made in 1996 at the age of 10. Honestly, I was probably at my most hard-core collecting between the ages of 10 and 13. SEGA obsessed is an understatement. My dad fully supported it and loved it all just as much as I did. He was the original gamer. I miss him dearly, but I'm thankful for all the cool videos he left me and now you guys. I love sharing with you these special moments of my childhood. Clever and funny. The Sega scream at the end seems out of place in a Master System commercial however. Maybe if you did a Saturn commercial that would work.

Actually, these I never intended these to be replications of 80's commercials... more like SNL parodies or NEW Sega commercials for obscure titles. Perhaps I should change the whole "lost" angle to "mock" or "new".

Hey gang. It's with much joy (having finished the first episode) that I introduce you to our all new series, "The SEGA Channel."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GArUX3iTPa4
I spent a long time debating the idea of rebranding the SegaMasterSystem.com (http://segamastersystem.com) youtube channel. I wanted a stand alone show to focus my efforts on, and with SMS.com, I saw myself spreading out to broad... too many concepts and ideas.
After much deliberation, I decided that an "ALL SEGA RETRO" show was the way to go. Thus, The SEGA Channel and the first episode seen above. SegaMasterSystem.com will remain a functioning website. We have some new writers who are very excited about cutting their teeth on some articles for the site, and when The SEGA Channel produces a Sega Master System focused video, that video will be shared on SMS.com. The two are basically one in the same... sister sites.
But my focus is now on creating this ongoing series called "The SEGA Channel". I urge you to take a look at what I've done with the first episode, "The Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin". Please let me know your thoughts on the direction I've taken. Feedback is essential at such an early stage of the game. Thanks guys.

Good show! I really like it.
Aside from compliments, the only feedback I have would be...
I ended up with a couple unresolved questions. First, you mentioned that the cart version sold a ton of copies but I actually would have liked to have known exactly(isn) how many it sold. Secondly, you explained why Sega needed Spiderman but you didn't say where that info came from. I followed your logic but I'm not clear on whether or not you have seen any documented evidence (like interviews, etc.) to back your conclusion up. Lastly, after you explained why Sega wanted Spiderman, you never tied that up by telling us how it worked out for them, aside form selling a lot of copies. Did it seem to lead to an increase in console sales or maybe help develop a relationship between Sega and Marvel?
Those are just the questions I was left with. I really did enjoy the show and I'm looking forward to the next episode. Excellent work. I liked the grid background, too...it made me wonder what you could do with a weatherman style dynamic background...like, maybe have the footage playing back there while you're pointing things out. lol.
Great job, dude. Thanks for posting it.

Uh, guys... of course the naming was deliberate. It's a tribute. I had Sega Channel briefly as a kid and loved it thoroughly.
We actually went with this name based on a vote from our followers on Twitter. They pretty much across the board chose it.
Bait and switch? Seriously?
