Ugh, I'm really annoyed with B.O.B. on Super Nintendo right now. I have the last password in the game and I can pretty reliably clear the first two stages (one's an easy race to the finish in a ship stage), but my fears have come true, as they've given me another set of four stages that must be cleared straight on three lives. The third stage is a huge pain, and it took me a ton of practice to finally clear it. I was hoping that the final boss wouldn't be too brutal, seeing as the Death boss before it went great. Took him down on the first try. I'm pretty proud of myself for that one. Nintendo Power said to have a bunch of shields in reserve for him, but I barely needed any. Well, anyway, I got to the final boss with four or five lives, no less, thanks to the 1-Ups in the stages, and he promptly made me blow through all of them in nothing flat. And that was on his first form. I've heard he has something like three or four forms. I honestly have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing. He flies around the screen so fast, and the only time he stops briefly, he's usually out of reach of my shots. So he's just pounding me left and right, up and down, or I can try to dodge, but then I never get any shots in because of the stupid delayed controls. I don't get it.

I beat B.O.B. on Super Nintendo as I posted in the Beaten in 2012 topic. I got up to the final boss without losing any lives, so I still had what ammunition/tools were leftover from the previous stages. That usually makes all the difference. When he wasn't flying around, I just stood directly under him, ate his shots (probably with a shield going), and fired my most powerful guns. That took care of the first form pretty fast, and the others weren't too terribly hard to deal with, at least not with the stuff I already had and the additional shields, health, and ammo that were appearing mid-battle.

Haven't started up my next serious effort yet, but I tried out some recent purchases. I played a tiny bit of Bratz and Jersey Devil on PlayStation, and I played some Mario Kart: Double Dash on GameCube to try out a controller.

Why am I torturing myself? I'm now playing through Bubsy on Super Nintendo, haha. Man, what a lame year for SNES games 1993 was. No wonder Nintendo was falling behind Sega. But I'm a slave to whatever is in the Nintendo Power issue I'm currently reading, so Issue 50 means I finally gotta give Bubsy a serious go. I'm up to stage 7, and I suppose I've gotten fairly used to the crappy controls. I'm just glad that this game doesn't have a huge number of stages like B.O.B. And 1994 is my light at the end of the tunnel, since that's when the SNES really started to get good again (and late '93 is around when I bought my SNES as a kid, so I'll finally be getting into childhood games soon). I'd say the majority of my SNES favorites are from right around launch (Castlevania IV, ActRaiser, etc.) and then from 1994 and on (DKC series, all the really good RPGs, etc.)

I take it back; I'm never going to get used to these shitty controls in Bubsy on Super Nintendo, haha. The farther I get in the game, the more that the issues are just exacerbated. Man, what a turd. I can't believe there are people that actually really enjoy this game. I mean, it's not completely unplayable, but that almost makes it all the worse. If it was just impossible to deal with, it would be easy to brush off, but it's playable enough to be beatable, yet not remotely enjoyable. At best, it's just boring, like in the fairly easy early stages, and later it's aggravating, with the frequent deaths from slipping around and crap you can't even see or, in an attempt to avoid that, the constant need to grind the action to a halt by stopping and scrolling the screen forward to see what's ahead. Since the game is so lame, I decided to kind of "cheat". The game only gives a password every three stages, but there are actually passwords that go directly to each stage. If I can get up to a stage with more than the default amount of lives, then using a password to skip the busywork of repeating the previous stages isn't giving me any advantage. In fact, it's placing me at a disadvantage, but anything to reduce my time with this game, haha.

It's been a while since I posted what I have been playing!

Thanks to my "new" PS3 I have been playing a lot of Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 and Little Big Planet. I was able to get them pretty cheap at Gamestop. I also gave Flingsmash for the Wii some game time because I found it (sans controller - which I have anyway) for $9.99 at Gamestop.

I was not aware of the ability of the PS3 to play PS1 games (I don't have the instruction manual and it didn't dawn on me to look it up online). I knew the newer models (I have the 320 gb) would not play PS2 games. I popped in Namco Museum Vol. 1 just for kicks and was pleasantly surprised that it would not only play it, but gave me options to make it look better on my HDTV. I hate to say it, but the PS1 games look horrendous for the most part on the newer tv I have. The PS3 rectifies that quite well. I popped in Need For Speed 2 and III to prove my point. I may actually play them more often! I put in Lunar Silver Star Story Complete in next and ended up playing for an hour and a half before I shut it off! I have beaten the game twice since we originally got it way back in 2001 or 2002 but I still love the game.

My only issue that I have (soon to be corrected) is that I am stuck with saves on my old memory card. I found an adapter that solves that problem. It seems the Codebreaker disc I have isn't working with the PS3. It loads the "This is NOT licensed" screen but does not progress past that. Oh, well. Cheaters never win, right?

I gave my Dreamcast a run for the first time in years. Played a bit of Jet Grind Radio, and discovered I kind of suck at it. It took me a couple of tries to get through the tutorial level where you have to grab onto the back of a vehicle to go uphill.

I eventually switched over to Grandia II, and played the first 45 minutes of the game. I've already beaten the game years ago, but I just wanted to play up to one of my favorite scenes.

Ryudo and Elena have just escaped from a tower that has been corrupted by darkness. Elena is all "woe is me" and refuses to move. Ryudo responds with this humorous line: "Hey! The power of darkness isn't coming this way to tell about the neighborhood bake sale! We need to leave!"

I already posted in the Beaten in 2012 topic, but I finished Bubsy on Super Nintendo and thank goodness for that. The final boss was ridiculously stupid, but I'm glad it was just because I beat it on my first try. It basically did nothing. It floated onto the screen, I jumped and glided toward its head, and both Bubsy and the enemy basically got stuck, with the boss taking hits over and over until it was dead. All together, it took, like, 3 seconds. So now I can gladly put Bubsy to rest. I guess I can't complain, paying only $1 for the game. I suppose I got my buck's worth of entertainment laughing at how hilariously stupid Bubsy's sprite looks when he lifts his arms on the roller coaster.

Anyway, I tried out some recent NES purchases too. Played a little Total Recall, Tom & Jerry, Airwolf, Silk Worm, Adventures of DinoRiki, Legend of Kage, and Wrath of the Black Manta.

Yeah, I had fun with Elevator Action. :)

Anyway, for my next serious effort, I'm playing Zombies Ate My Neighbors on Super Nintendo. It's pretty tough, but also not so tough at the same time. What's really tough is trying to get each password with all 10 victims alive. It's so easy to lose someone in a split second. Sometimes, if it's only one, I can earn an additional person before the next password, but if it's 2+, I may as well reset. I could, of course, keep playing without worrying about keeping a full set of people, but I don't want to put myself in a bad situation later. I also like having the full experience of a level. So far I have a 10-victim password at level 13, but I've casually played the game up to the high teens, maybe even 20.

I don't remember when I started, but I'm nearing the end of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. It's a much better game than FFXIII, and it's surprisingly good for a portable title. Combat is repetitive, but varied enough as it goes on. The soundtrack stands out in a good way.

I just started playing through Clash at Demonhead on the NES. Despite the wonky hit detection and the mildly irritating way that almost all the hopping enemies who fire projectiles aim right at you the exact same way (you have to experience it to know why this feels cheap), the game's charm overcomes these small setbacks making it a really fun platformer to devote some serious time to. There is an actual story in the game, and there are notes that need to be taken as the game is non-linear with multiple paths and levels that can be revisited and further explored.

My childhood friend, Blake, gave the game to me about four years ago, so it has an extra layer of nostalgia frosting the fun, which is always a good thing. ;)

Progress in Zombies Ate My Neighbors on Super Nintendo is slow going. Part of that is just because I'm not playing a ton, but it's also so challenging to maintain 10 people, even with earning an extra. I have a password at level 17, and I'm having a hell of a time getting to 21 with 10 victims. Those tourist couples that turn into werewolves are so cheap. I mean, there are situations where it's literally impossible to save them all in time. Like how there are two couples in stage 17, and if you start the stage with the level 17 password (and thus with the default equipment), there's no way to get to both in time. I just have to accept the loss and hope I do perfect on the other three stages since the squidmen stage and werewolf stage aren't very good for building points and apparently you can only get one bonus victim per stage (I hit a multiple of 40,000 twice in stage 20, yet only earned one, grrr).

I've been playing different games that I just recently purchased:

New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)
Kirby's Return to Dreamland (Wii)

Yesterday:

Dr. Mario

I'm trying to *finally* beat Kickle Cubicle. I managed to get about a third through the fourth world: "Toy Land." Good thing for passwords! I just suck at Dr. Mario...

Today:

I decided to give Kid Chameleon a try and determined that I think it sucks pretty hard...I also played Ristar and didn't have much of an opinion of him, either. It seems he chokes things...including chickens...how strange...

I will have to find more time to dust off some of the games I have been neglecting for a while...

I've been messing around with Obake no Q Tarou Wanwan Panic for the Famicom as of late. Chubby Cherub, which I don't own, is the North American localization of the game, by the way. While the game is hardly the most amazing platformer, there is a certain charm to the game that keeps me playing- the charm could in all likelihood be boiled down to the protagonist being a ghost that looks like a duck. Why that does so much for me I can't quite say other than I've always liked Donald Duck and been a bit macabre ever since childhood. The theme song is nice, too.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition (PS3)

I haven't played GTA IV in a couple weeks. I got stuck at the spot where you have to save your cousin Roman. I decided to give it another shot. I made it through the warehouse and tried to shoot the guy holding Roman, but then it said Roman was executed. I have no idea if I shot him or the guy did.

Moving on to Batman, I got past the guys A MONTH AGO that were giving me such fits on the way to the Batmobile. I progressed to saving the doctors (sad to say that's only 5% done!) and am tracking Commissioner Gordon again. I think I have problems sometimes because I am a rush headlong into things kind of guy, and Batman has to be stealth in his motions sometimes. That and he has too many puzzles to figure out! What did I expect, huh? Awesome games though...

It's been awhile since my last update, but I don't have a whole ton to report.

I haven't played Zombies Ate My Neighbors on Super Nintendo in weeks (although I do intend to get back into it), but last I left off, I had a password with all 10 victims at level 33? Something like that. It's going to be a pain getting to the next password because there's a big boss fight before the password, and it's really tight on ammo to start with the closest password to the fight. They're not easy stages to keep everyone alive in, either.

I did start up and complete Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow on my Game Boy Advance SP in the meantime, though. Like usual with these Metroidvania games, I'm maxing out everything (every soul, every item drop, at least one of every item in the game, max level, etc.). I'm basically done with all of that now, but I just learned that you can't truly get everything unless you're in hard mode where a few extra items show up. Oh well, my file is complete as far as normal mode goes.

I'm also FINALLY cleaning and trying out the pile of games I got on and around Christmas. Had some fun playing a tiny bit of Life Force and Super C on NES, but I stink at both, haha. Then I tried out a couple additions to my Nintendo 64 import collection: Susume! Taisen Puzzle Dama and Zool: Majuu Tsukai Densetsu. I ended up beating Susume! Taisen Puzzle Dama. Nice quality puzzle game, and it's fun to see a few things added to the formula compared to the original Taisen Puzzle Dama and TwinBee Taisen Puzzle Dama that I already have. Zool I feel a little more torn about. I'm not super crazy about Pokemon-style RPGs in the first place, but the battle system seems fairly fun and the graphics are really nice in parts. But moving around in a dungeon... oof. The sprite looks so awkward against the 3D terrain, and everything moves kind of slow and choppy. It's very bizarre. It seems like it could potentially be a pretty good game if I seriously sat down with it and grew accustomed to its quirks, but, either way, I'm glad to finally get this one in the collection and move another step closer to having every Japan-exclusive N64 game that isn't sports or some gambling/board game like pachinko, mahjong, and shogi.

Outrun Online Arcade Disappearing from Xbox Live Next Year

Sega originally released the Ferrari-focused arcade racer on the Xbox Live Marketplace early last year, with a PlayStation Network version arriving exclusively in Europe shortly thereafter. Now the PSN edition of Outrun has apparently vanished from the European PlayStation Store.
An official statement from Sega follows: "Due to the expiry of the contract with Ferrari, OutRun Online Arcade will remain offline on PSN but will still be available on XBLA until Dec 2011."
Microsoft pulled a similar disappearing act with several Midway XBLA titles after Warner Bros. Interactive bought the struggling Mortal Kombat publisher last year. While those games are still available to anyone who already purchased them, everyone else is pretty much out of luck. At least Xbox 360 owners have a little advance warning this time around, though it seems strange that Sega's deal with Ferrari resulted in the PSN version getting pulled more than a year before the XBLA release.

A little trouble with a PC Engine game led to me playing a tiny bit of every complete PC Engine HuCard I own, haha. I was trying out a couple ho-hum sports games I acquired - Final Match Tennis and Formation Soccer: Human Cup '90 - but I can't for the life of me get Formation Soccer to work for some odd reason. I grabbed my stack of compete PC Engine HuCard games and went through them all (didn't bother digging out my loose cards) one by one (1943 Kai, Detana!! TwinBee, Fire Pro Wrestling 3, Hatris, Idol Hanafuda Fan Club, Susano Ou Densetsu, and Youkai Douchuuki), and they all worked on the first try, like usual, except for Youkai Douchuuki. I've always had a little trouble with that one because it seems picky about what accessories I use with it. Like if my 6-button controller isn't set to 2-button mode, it refuses to work. After a minute, I did get it going, though. But no matter what I tried, I couldn't get that soccer game to work. I'm not going with the determination that it's non-functional just yet, though. Maybe it's even more finicky than Youkai Douchuuki and doesn't like being played with a 6-button controller no matter what or doesn't like my Duo-RX. For now I'll just put it away and hope that someday I'll figure out what's up with it.

I started up my Japanese PlayStation 2 for the first time in a long time. I tried out a little of my Japanese Star Ocean: The Second Story and its included demo of Astronoka, Vampire Savior EX Edition, and Super Robot Taisen F.

Then I popped Shepherd's Crossing 2 into my DS Lite and got sucked into it way more than I was planning. I was just trying it out so I didn't save or anything, but I ended up playing for around two hours. I've had the original on PlayStation 2 for quite awhile (but I only ever tried that one out too), and I had no idea that it was ported to PSP or that it had a sequel on DS, and that both were already available in the US, published by Graffiti Entertainment, which I've never even heard of before. Talk about low-profile, but, then again, so was Valcon's publishing of the original. Anyway, it's very cool to have a farming alternative to Harvest Moon (not that I have any problem with Harvest Moon), other than social gaming crap. When I stumbled across the sequel on Amazon the other day (for dirt cheap, no less), I had to pick it up.

Maybe I'm becoming a more impatient gamer because it drives me nuts when it takes an eternity just to get to some gameplay at the start of an RPG. Yet at the same time, some of my favorites have painfully long intros. Maybe it's a matter of what's going on in the intro. If I have to play through one more RPG intro where I'm some kid in school or a kid in training to become some sort of adventurer and I need to wander around a school/town talking to friends and teachers, I'm going to barf. Would it kill developers to start with something exciting? You can slow it down and set up the story after that. Even though I don't care for the game much as a whole, Chrono Cross got it right in that regard. Or like with Valkyrie Profile, it may have a very long intro that makes you wait to get to some real gameplay, but at least it's interesting. I'm some Norse goddess that was just woken up from stasis in order to recruit the spirits of warriors who have just died so they can fight in an approaching war of the gods? Okay, sign me up.

Anyway, I played Persona 2 until I finally got to a battle I could control, and I played Trails in the Sky through the first training dungeon. Ys was the only game to get to some gameplay pretty fast, but I'd consider it an adventure game rather than an RPG. Oh, and holy cow is the dubbing terrible in Ys. Anyway, they're probably all good games, but it's hard to tell without putting multiple hours in them.

More testing of PSP games. I gave the English versions of Star Ocean: First Departure and Star Ocean: Second Evolution a whirl, after owning them just in Japanese for a long time. It's very weird playing the first Star Ocean in English for the first time. I've played through both the original and the PSP remake in Japanese, so that's the only way I've ever known the game. It's interesting to have an English version, but it's also very disappointing because the localization is so damn bad. It would be pretty transparent to anyone who doesn't know any better, but I can't get past how they changed the names of practically EVERYTHING to ridiculously awful bullshit. Thank goodness I can at least change the names of my party members, but that doesn't stop them from saying the names constantly in the voice acting. And the dubbing is awful for that matter. A lot of the names are still pronounced the same, though, just spelled in new embarrassingly stupid ways, so that helps. Doesn't save me from hearing "Roddick", though. And it's a shame that the better (and vastly different) original version of the game is still Japan-only. I like the remake, but it doesn't compare to the original Super Famicom version. As for Second Evolution, its localization sucks too, but not nearly as bad, probably because it would be more apparent to Americans, had they played the original English version on PlayStation. The dubbing is still lame, like in the original, but now it's just boringly bad instead of hilariously bad. Most of the problems with Second Evolution are just with the game itself, whether you're playing it in English or Japanese. It's just an inferior port.

I've been playing random stuff sporadically over the past few months.

Tales of Hearts - I've been focusing on complete a few side quests, before I continue with the main storyline.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2 (Tara's Version) - My only complaint about it is that there is no easy way to make money in the game. Sure you get some money from the mother, and you can sell your extra stuff. But money always seems to run out faster that you can earn it.

Pokemon Pinball - I discovered that you can play this on the Super Game Boy attachment. It doesn't look as nice as it does on my GBC, but at least it's easier to see.

Jade Cocoon - I gave it test run last night. Not a bad game so far, but the controls for walking around are a pain.

I won't be playing too many games for next while. It's flood watch season in my area, so I've spent this morning packing up my collection, and hauling it upstairs. I was able to fit most of my games into a huge plastic bin i've got. But it took me, my Dad, and his chair lift to get it upstairs!

I've still got to pack up my consoles, my anime collection, and few miscellanous nicknacks. But at least they won't be as heavy as my games were.

Besides for Halo Reach and MW3 I've been playing alot more of Uno lately. That game never gets old. And I also played the Ninja Gaiden 3 and Sniper Elite 2 demos.

Playing Super Mario World, Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, and Gradius III. I'm also crying on the inside because these games are much harder than I remember. Either that, or I am not half the gamer I used to be.

Yesterday:

Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3)

Today:

Crazy Taxi (DC)
Sonic Adventure (DC)

I decided to watch the intro again to Sonic Adventure (with the VGA Box) and I think it blows away anything of its time (and it seems pretty impressive compared to some of the stuff out today). My only complaint with the VGA Box is it leaves about a three inch vertical black bar on the left side of the screen. I started researching VGA to HDMI converters and purchased one with good reviews as well as a RCA/S-Video to HDMI converter for the other systems.

Gradius III really is that difficult, RotJ I don't really remember the difficulty of, but Super Mario World is a cakewalk.

Return of the Jedi is tough. I agree that Super Mario World should be a cakewalk, but I am definitely rushing through it. I tend to do that with games I have beaten before, like the second time around I can just breeze through it with no hangups. I am terribly mistaken. I'm still playing these three, but I added the original Donkey Kong Country to the mix.

Today:

Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3)
Batter Up! (Game Gear)

I am nearly halfway through GTA: IV. I just have Packie's missions to finish and I will be done with Chapter Two. I dusted off the Game Gear and played my favorite baseball game: Batter Up! by Namco. It doesn't have MLB license so the teams (14 in all) and players are fake. I was getting my butt handed to me until I switched teams. I managed to beat another team 4-2 until I made it to the next team in order and managed to get trounced by a team full of multiple home run hitters! Thankfully, there is a 10 run mercy rule so I don't get embarassed (too much) by losing! Still a fun game though with games that can average 13-15 minutes for a 9 inning game!
