Im definitely picking a few. first and foremost Peach then Yoshi, Link, Starfox, Pikachu, Zelda and Little Mac. Im mostly going to get them for collecting purposes. I'm still not sure what exactly these will all do. Anyone got any favorites if they do pick any?

I might if I knew what they were for

They modify the game environment in whatever way they're coded to if you try them on a certain game. I imagine they could be used from anything like special suits, to tossing that guy into a game as a character to even just ripping off Disney Infinity and doing an entire game that expands with the more of them you have.
I'm tempted to buy a couple of them or so, just as desk toys, as I don't know if I'd want to bother carting them around to use on my 3DS or with the WiiU.

Some of them look really nice, I could see myself getting the Peach, Little Mac, Donkey Kong and Kirby ones just to have on a shelf or something.
Yoshi's Ned Flanders ski suit pose kind of creeps me out though.
I might get my favorites just for decoration. Samus, Peach, Captain Falcon, Fox. I'm not too interested in their actual in-game function.

Yeah, I have a shelf with my Skylanders that has extra empty space to fill out. I might pick up the first wave to fill the shelf for display as well. In-game function....nah.

Not to create a topic of the same thing, but these amiibos are a bitch to find.
I really dont care for a complete set, just certain ones I like and want. But some are just unfairly hard to obtain, and i am not referring to the known "rare"/discontinued ones.
For instance, I have been trying to get the Dedede amiibo. No fucking luck. Now the Meta Knight one is a Fuck Buy exclusive...seriously?
Makes me want to stop amiibos all at once,

Excuse out of Nintendo yesterday was that supposedly on the west coast the teamster thug crybabies are forcing their union members not to collect a paycheck and in turn stuff isn't coming off the boats. So stuff in bigger boxes like consoles, handhelds, and amiibos that come in on boats are sitting to wait and offloaded very slowly. Anything slim and small (games) they're now flying in to keep up with demand.

I hope this gets resolved soon. Though store exclusives are still a pain though.

Store exclusives are the worst. It's not fair to people who can't get to the store, or get there before someone on an odd schedule or out of work to snap them all up and ask a bundle moments later online. I've avoided the Amiibo because a strong mix of no game that I care to use them with, but also all the predatory purchasing around some of them as I don't wish to be a victim.
I know Mega Man is out there, but I've never seen it. I've seen Toon Link once, Bowser a few times, never seen the Villager or Trainer to give examples. I know they range from easy to nasty to get. We even have someone on this site in the commerce area wanting like triple for Mega Man which is just slimy. It's like brand new dude, buy it for yourself, not to fuck someone who couldn't get there first.

I'm not even messing with collecting amiibos. I already have atari-ps4 games that I collect. I draw the line at games only. If I get amiibos, it'll be to use in a game. I don't own one as of yet.

Never even paid them any mind. I assumed they're just figurines for kids and toy collectors.
Tanooki

They basically are, but they're chipped so they'll do a little extra in some games. I imagine they probably could easily be all thrown together in some skylanders or infinity ripoff if Nintendo really wanted to cash in on some Capn N the Gamemaster like super world, but I doubt it when it's easier to be token stuff in existing titles as they're showing so far.
I already have Link, Zelda, and Fox McCloud (Star Fox).
There was a retail price drop this week on Yoshi, Donkey Kong, and Princess "Peach" Toadstool to $10 from the usual $13. My guess is that Nintendo produced too many of these models due to preconceived ideas about their popularity which didn't match well with actual demand. Thus it is discounting them to clear up shelf space for newer or more popular models.
Also, Nintendo has been mentioning possibly releasing card-based versions of Amiibo at lower prices than the figure versions. We shall see.

I decided to see what's so special about the things and I found Mega Man and Toon Link at two different stores yesterday. I wasn't planning on it, but I had gone into one to see what Legos they had and they had the Toon Link statue on the shelf with no sticker or holder, it was the only one. Someone said a store down the street got Mega Man (which really was the one I wanted I mentioned in here before) so I went and snapped that up.
I haven't tried them in the 3DS Smash Bros yet, probably will eventually, but they make cool desk toys under my 2 work monitors. I really love the classic 8bit Mega Man look and his paint on that one is shiny and catches the light well.

So I've pretty much got everyone except for Luigi as he is common and I am in no rush. Its been quite a journey getting these. I even got my friend into it and he's been helping me and actually gave me the ones I haven't seen at all. I had to get Shulk from Japan since its a Gamestop/EB Games exclusive. This new wave is going to be my greatest challenge yet. Luckily it will be warmer so it won't be bad getting them since its freezing out there. I'm pretty shocked to see the amount of older people hunting these things, the non scalpers I mean.

02-26-2015, 03:08 PM
That's one I'm thinking of getting depending on how it will affect the game, Shulk. I'll be getting that Xenoblade game in April and if the little character does some good bonuses for the game like unlocking extra gear, more quests, something meaty and not just crap fluff I'd get it.
I'm thinking eventually I'd probably grab the standing Mario to come, maybe Bowser, do want Samus and Starfox. Other than that I'm not entirely sure as I don't like the Link character as much as the Toon one, so that outs the others. I see no value in the rares like the Villager and Wii Fit Trainer at all, and I have no Fire Emblem games so those I have no reason to care for either. Stuff like Little Mac, Captain Falcon and Kirby along with Pikachu I'm not sure about either, same with the rest really.

I don't think most people expected these to be as successful as they have been so far. But unlike Skylanders and Disney Infinity characters, it seems that the majority of people are only purchasing Amiibos for collectible purposes and not actually opening them to use with compatible games. I haven't picked any up as I don't have any real interest in collecting these in the near future.

I was at Pax East last friday and there was a booth selling Amiibos. I dont know much about them, but they seemed to have some of the 'rarer' ones. They had 2 wii fit trainers, marth (I think), metaknight and some others I dont remember. The price sheet had them for like 50-60 bucks each. There was alot of people looking at them but I diddnt see anyone buying them. I think alot of people are buying them for collectible purposes, the price sheet said they have 'light damage' to packaging, but I diddnt notice any crushing or damage of any sort. So I guess the packaging is gonna be a big deal to the collectors out there.
I admit these are pretty cool. I want the Kirby one but I cant see myself collecting them since its just another money-pit.

Toon Link, Sheik, Mega Man and also Sonic have been formerly hard to find Amiibo but in the last couple of weeks I've seen them all over the place.
I was out shopping for food today, store carries a limited amount of them and I guess they don't want Samus anymore as they had one with a clearance sticker for $3 off so I grabbed it. I'm now up to 3 of them. She's definitely a tall one next to Mega Man and Toon Link.

How does this differ from buying a code to unlock content already on the disc? Many people had trouble with that concept. With all the controversy surrounding availability and Nintendo planning to replace figures with simple plastic tabs or cards, do you think the figures really negate the argument of buying to unlock content already on the disc?
I'm tempted to buy a couple of them or so, just as desk toys, as I don't know if I'd want to bother carting them around to use on my 3DS or with the WiiU.
Bah. Just wait for these things to hit market saturation and the price of the used toys to drop just like Skylanders (sky-who-what-now?).

Ah Amiibos... man in their late thirties harassing store clerks on the phone everyday to get the latest released figurines, and buy all of the same model to call them rare and put them on craigslist for 60$ or trade against another lame figurine... good times. Seriously I dont get it, dont expect to get a girls phone number when you pay!

I only have Mario and Link, might get a few others if I happen to see them when I have money to spend (Toon Link, Mario Party Luigi, particularly) but I'm not going to lose sleep if I don't get them nor am I going to spend aftermarket prices on them or spend time tracking shipments to stores, harassing clerks, etc, to get them.
I haven't opened them yet, only thing I have that supports them so far is Hyrule Warriors, and I'm not far enough into that to be ready for the weapon Link unlocks and whatever Mario (or any random Amiibo) does.
do you think the figures really negate the argument of buying to unlock content already on the disc?
Yes, at least partially. You can hold a figure, look at it, put it on display. Codes, not so much. I'd still much rather there not be locked content in the game, or have a way to unlock it for free within the game with the Amiibo just unlocking it easier, but at least you get something physical for your money here. If that's not something you want, then no, it's not better than a code, but to a lot of people they are a neat little collectible.

I own 6: Sonic, Toon Link, Sheik, Zelda, Gold Mario and PAC-MAN.
Mainly bought the first four just for Hyrule Warriors use mainly "except Sonic, got him for my own personal fandom and old school Sega feels <3" , then picked up Gold Mario for rarity sake and that one day I may use it on Mario Party also filled in for fifth Amiibo for Hyrule Warriors. Picked up PAC-MAN exclusively for the Mario Kart 8 outfit cause, I gotta have that outfit, plus it's cool to have PAC-MAN.
That's really "at this point" the only Amiibo I ever plan on buying as to me I like them and they have use. More nostalgia than collecting for me.

The Smash Bros. line is almost done and all I want is Duck Hunt and R.O.B. anything else I could care less.
I'd like to have a complete line of Amiibo, but I have my priorities on the ones which are the most important to me, and I'm not going to pay much over retail price to get any of them except for my absolute favorites. To be honest, I'm "casually" collecting them at this point due to finances. That being said, I have had help from my grandmother and mother in hunting some of them down. With their help, I now have 13 of them:
Fox McCloud Link Zelda Mario (Smash Bros.) Bowser (Smash Bros.) Peach (Smash Bros.) Sonic The Hedgehog Yoshi (Mario Bros.) Pac-Man Wario Silver Mario Charizard Inkling Boy
Right now, the ones I want the most which I don't already have are Kirby and Mega Man. Hopefully I'll get those by the end of the year. ("I'm gonna get that Kirby!" ;-))

I hate Amiibo. Every Nintendo Direct is ....(game)....Amiibo....(game).....Amiibo.....(gam e)....Amiibo....locking on disk/card game content behind this plastic junk it makes me want to puke. I cant wait for the day when some knock off company makes a disk with all Amiibo capability. With that said I would buy a Mr Game and Watch and Chibi Robo as I don't mind having statues of those guys and there isn't much stuff(statues/toys) out there for them.

My husband and I have managed to get a nice assortment of the early ones when the local GameStop was accepting in-store preorders, but everything started going to hell in a handbasket once the exclusives started rolling out. We have:
Luigi
Pikachu
Link
Samus
Yoshi
Kirby
Peach
Sheik
Meta Knight (traded Shulk for it because it was easier for me to get a Gamestop exclusive than a Best Buy exclusive)
King Dedede
Villager
Wii Fit Trainer
Sonic
Mega Man
Zelda
Toad
I'm not joining in the feeding frenzy, nor will I feed the greedheads who snapped the figures up while I slept or worked. I'm in agreement with CDiablo with respect to Splatoon - I want to play the missions, but I'm not giving some jackball on eBay $60 (+$20 shipping because they can) for the 3-pack.
I will be preordering the Chibi-Robo Zip Lash bundle to support the new game.

I admit I haven't tried Toys R Us yet, but we do have some crazies around here who raided the stores last week for amiibo. Not sure if TRU was affected. Are there any games you're looking for that might make it worth a possible trade for a 3-pack?

Hey. When I went to Toys-r-us I diddnt buy any of the Splatoon amiibos. I was there looking for other specific ones, mainly wario but they diddnt have any I wanted so I diddnt buy any. I would have bought one of the Splatoon 3-packs for myself but the 6 or 7 they had on the shelf had creased packaging. They had a shitload of the splatoon boy and girl so I passed on those as well. I think the splatoon amiibos wont be super hard to find, so I wouldnt go crazy for them yet.
Ive found that Toys-r-us has by far the best selection and quantity of amiibos. If you havent tried toys-r-us you might be surprised. They are a little more expensive but they have way more and get re-stocked much more often.

I don't really worry about the packaging because I've opened all the ones I've gotten so far (yes, even Villager - that little guy and Wii Fit Trainer were my husband's picks for Wave 1).
If I can make it to my TRU in the next week or so, I'll check into it.
Paying $3-5 more is better than paying $25-30 more. The Amazon listings for these things and people on other sites asking $40 for Lucina because they can make me do this --> :bad-words:

The Gamestops in my area got 2 Ness figures each when they were released.
Earlier this week the gamestops in my area were also 'restocked' with Wii Fit trainers. And by restocked I mean each location got one.
It sucked because I showed up 10 minutes after one GS opened and the guy wouldnt sell it to me, he said he was holding it for someone else.

Last I heard Nintendo was suppose to start sending more of each version, specifically the retailer exclusive ones. But people are still fighting over them so I figure they either haven't increased their shipments yet or haven't increased them enough.
Tanooki
06-27-2015, 04:49 PM
Well what I'm realizing is that they're being honest, but it's word play. They have increased the shipment of the smash bros line which seem to run short due to scalpers, but the word play is that the increase is they are shipping them again, just only in like quantities of 1, maybe 2 if you're lucky. They also don't tell the store what is in the random box of stuff, so it's like, be a goon scalper with no life and show up every morning as a store(like gamestop) opens and heckle them what they got in the box and be the first one there, or you'll still get screwed.
bb_hood

I think the stamped on serial number is the main difference.
I really dont think the first print runs should be worth more than the 'reprints' or 're-runs'. The reprints are possibly rarer and the figures look nicer.
Some of the Marth faces on the first print runs look horrible.
I think the only reason people mention 'first editions' vs 'reprints' or 're-runs' is that they want to validate spending 50-100$ on figures that are now worth 35$ on ebay, and can be had for retail with patience.
Just wait until they get released with 'greatest hits' or 'million seller' packaging.
I dont even think the terms 'reprints' or 're-runs' are even applicable. I dont think they have gone out of print, nintendo just cant keep store shelves stocked because they have to keep producing the newer figures.

There are people who definitely think "first edition" justifies them asking even more than the much-more-than-it's-worth that they're already asking for.

That's honorable of you. Since I bitch about the asshole scalpers and vultures with this junk. I'll make this proposition too here. As I said I don't actively look, but when I go to any store that would carry them I always make a point to look every single time. I've bumped into Wario, Toad, and a few others some have problems with in the past, even Mega Man and Toon Link when they were a pain to locate awhile back.
If you have one you're looking for, let me know via PM, be realistic though as the odds of seeing a Villager or Lil Mac are slim to none, and by some sliver of a chance the few I've listed before come up I'm first. :P
If I do find one someone wants, you pay for the item+tax, shipping (supplies and postage charge), paypal fees (unless you gift it), and a teeny tip of a couple bucks for my time and gas and you can have it. Since they're $13, tax is 6% here, and I have no idea what shipping goes for, probably $20 would be fairly on the nose.
I just ask someone does the same: Fox, Lil Mac, Capn Falcon, Pit...that's it (for now.) I think a Charizard should be easy enough to pop up locally not to bother, though I do still fear what will be poach bait when Duck Hunt, Chibi Robo and the others in that wave drop.

I think very many people are going to want the duck hunt, rob (both versions), mr. game & watch, and the two 8-bit marios that are going to be packaged with mario maker. These are all going to be released in the US around Christmas time and I really hope Nintendo makes enough of these.
Its so annoying the Nintendo is making 2 different 8-bit Marios. We already have 4 different mario amiibos, and we are going to get dr. mario and the 2 different 8-bit marios. DO WE REALLY NEED 7 MARIO AMIIBOS??? One is a 8-bit Mario is going to be an Europe exclusive which will make it expensive for sure.

I broke down and got the Mega Man Amiibo the other day. I had some trade-in credit at a local independent game store, and it was the only time I'd seen Mega Man in the 'wild'. Well concerning rarity its really a mixed bag.
First off, people act like the North American versions are the 'rarer' variants, but I really think the market over here is just way larger than in Europe or Japan. More North American versions have been produced and sold for sure, its just that they are so popular you cant find certain ones in stores. The US wii fit trainer and villager amiibos would sell (on ebay) for like 80-100$, pit and little mac used to be 70-90$ before they restocked them. The Japanese or European versions of these 4 can easily be had for about 20$.
Second, now we got all this 'first print' crap to deal with. So if you want one that was released in the very beginning you will have to pay more. The only real difference is the back of the card and the serial number.
That being said, what really makes these 'expensive' is the packaging. Any specific figure can be found (for the most part) for 20$ so its hard to say which figures are the rarest, all of them are just not rare. However I do think the Gold Mario will probably end up being one of the rarest. I could see Gold Mario being one figure they just dont make any more of. Silver Mario on the other hand, seems to be really common. Best Buy and Toys-r-us always seem to have them in stock.
The figures that are considered the 'rarest' ones have been wii fit trainer, marth, and villager. If I remember correctly Nintendo announced sometime last winter that they were going to discontinue these three. Of course, this resulted in everybody flocking to walmart and best buy and everything sold out. Then people started calling these three the 'holy trinity' and everybody went apeshit over them.
Of course, Nintendo has reprinted all 3 since then.
Might also want to keep an eye on Target over the next 2 weeks:

Looks like they are going to have more Marth, Wii Fit, Jiggly, Charizard, Wario, and a ton of Rosalinas.

I'll admit that I bought a Gold Mario Amiibo for beyond the MSRP because I know it's gonna retain value. I just wonder if there's someone who will eventually own all the Smash Bros. Amiibo. Not that they're all out, but you know someone will.

Oh of course, It really not that hard of a collection to build if you can score them at retail price. Including the ones not released yet there will be about 50.
Ive met alot of people who have all of the released ones so far. If you were down with collecting them in the beginning it wasnt super hard to find the rares like wii fit and marth in stores.

I'd say Villlager would top the list. Then Marth. Pit and Shulk are up there as well. Robin and Lucina will be more rare down the line. Looking forward I can see Dark Pit be one of them since its a Best Buy exclusive most likely.
All I'm missing right now is Lucina and Luigi. Luigi I don't intend on buying because frankly I don't like him. I also got the Splatoon and Mario Party ones sans Luigi of course, as well. I'm looking forward to R.O.B. and Duck Hunt. Those I would actually line up for as I see them being in high demand and limited supply.

Thats funny because I feel the same way, Im only missing 7 Smash Amiibos and one is Luigi because I just dont want him. Hes the only one I just really dont like. I wont give him any shelf space. I like the Mario Party Luigi but the smash one I think is kinda dumb.
I think villager is probably the 'rarest' between him, marth and wii fit. Captain Falcon is really hard to find also.

Don't want to turn this into a trade thread, but Sheik, rare? I can get those almost everywhere around here and might trade for some that I'm looking for.
Continuing the Luigi comments: I went to a TRU as they were closing to see if they had good sale prices on games. The only Amiibo that they had left was Luigi and they had at least thirty.

Shulk, not Shiek.
Shulk is hard to find, he was a Gamestop exclusive.

Anyone else get down to Gamestop this morning? They had limited quantities of Ness and King Dedede.
The store I was at had 7 Ness and 2 Dededes, good thing I was second in line.
Both figures appeared on the GS online store for sale this morning as well, but they sold out in 15 minutes.

Seems to be the same story here, called the one up the street from me, they have a pile of NESS, but only got 2 DEDEDE and they're gone. He said the NOA rep showed up with the shipment today, and told manager(guy I talked to) in the next couple of months they're going to do a wide reprint of all the older stuff no one can find. That's good news, scalpers beware, your profits are going to drop if they do enough of them.

It was bound to happen. Nintendo (like Poochy) ain't stupid. They know people want them and they know they sell.
Nintendo has been reprinting them for a few months now. Marth was available when wave 4 came out, Meta Knight was restocked not long after that, Wii Fit Trainer had a small restock at Gamestop and Bestbuy and will be sold at Target sometime this month. Pit has been restocked at Gamestop online at least 3 times now and he has been on amazon for retail price as well. The Ness and Dedede amiibos are restocks. The reason all GS locations got 2 or 3 Dedede is because they were behind on preorders. Rosalina will be at target along with Jiggly and other wave 4 characters.

I think it's just best to not even almost care about it. Just walk in, if it's there great, if not, they'll sort it out. It's just the best not to let the scum win and overpay over being impatient. It's not like the care for Smash Bros in particular is going to fall off anytime soon.
