Successful Price Match, sweet!

A guy I met a Circuit City the first day of the sale works at another local game store. I was in there today talking to him about pricematch, and he said he used to work at EB and that his store pricematched a bunch of games for him a day ago. He gave me the names of a couple CSR's who knew him. So I stopped in, picked up some games, and asked the guy if they pricematched.

He goes "Yeah, which store?"; I told him CC and that they had these earlier this week (they did, the guy I saw there who told me about EB had bought them) and told him about my friend who worked at that EB. He says, "Yeah, I know him, here, I'll ring them up."

Viewtiful Joe, Rygar, Wipeout Fusion, Crimson Sea. Total: 19.95 :-).

I think normally they need to know the games are in stock though. If your store pulled the games before the sale started, though, go to EB, have them call the CC to confirm the titles and buy them!

(Also, I guess I'm heading back for the Colllector's Editions :-))

You know I hear a lot of bitching about Ebay come on give me a break
Hell my wife and I went and got all those games I mentioned earlier and guess what sold the 2 Rez copies for a combined 100 bucks Hell just made back my investment and still got to keep some cool games. My CC pulled all the listed games and said they won't be out for sale until Sunday morning
Didn't try to get anymore so don't know if they were still ringing up at 4.99

Probably won't go back, I got some flea markets and swaps to hit to hopefully score some NES and Genesis stuff

I went around to different Circuit City stores tonight.(Driving all over). The few stores that had anything were now clean of all $5.00 games.
I hit one other CC that I never went to they had about 10 crap Sports or...titles..
I picked up Tony Hawk 3 for $5.00 out of that pile.
Games that I see on $5.00 lists were Full Price when I scanned them..
The store employees knew exactly what I was looking for and said all $5.00 games are gone...nothing about no sale etc..

So I hit EB and Gamestop to see just what they were charging for the games on the lists I see.
No deals...Everything high priced..(Stores were dead)

I picked up a few games I wanted/used..

More proof that the employees and manager at my CC are assholes and idiots...

Lets rewind, shall we. STEP 1:

Someone please tell me why I have the worst f***ing luck with these sales. I wasn't able to go yesterday, so I go today at opening. I get to the game section and they have everyone game on the list in the cart by the register. Here's the conversation between myself and employees (short version):

ME: Are these the games that are selling for $4.99
CC: Yeah, but thats a mistake. They are not supposed to be that price.
ME: Well they are that price all around the country and you guys were selling these yesterday for this price.
CC: Did those games have a $4.99 sticker on them or were they ringing up $4.99.
ME: They ring up $4.99
CC: Well were not selling them even if they ring up $4.99.

Manager comes over and asks if I need help, and I ask him and he says there was a "computer malfunction" or something like that. WTF...all these stores were selling this shit all yesterday and they didn't catch this "malfunction". He claims that the real sale doesn't start until the 11th, and you know by then all of the games will be gone. I f***ing hate this BS!!!!

STEP 2:

On Tuesday I returned after hearing stories of other CCs still selling these games...mostly to make sure mine didn't put them out (even though they told me the 11th.) I meet a nice girl working the register and talked a bit about the sale. She tells me that the games are in the back and that the sale is on for this weekend. I confirm that it is the 11th and she tells me no...COME BACK ON THE 10th. Ok, everything is cool so far.

STEP 3:

Fast forward to today, the 10th. I go in AT OPENING and see the $4.99 bin in the front of the gaming section. Go over to it and a see that about 70% of the bin is empty and the rest is mostly shitty sports and PS1 games. Now how could this have happened you ask...those fuckers put the games out on WED!!!!! WTF...I get two guaruntees, 1 FROM THE FUCKING MANAGER, that these games would not be sold until this weekend.

Of course there were no games left that I was looking for...I did snag a couple I thought could be promising, but in no way did I leave that store a happy man.

I got the following:

AlienFront Online (DC)
Grind Session (PS1)
Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix (PS1)
Starsky & Hutch (Xbox)
MLB Slugfest 2003 (Xbox)
Soul Reaver 2 (PS2)

SO, this little sale further cements the idea that I have the worst fucking luck in the world and the retail business is full of bullshit. I will be writing a nice letter to the CC home office...which of course won't do anything anyway.

Yesterday I went to the CC which I hit on Saturday evening last week when the slae was pretty unknown.

Interesting tidbit information how this CC reacted to the premature sale: they made two bins in the meantime for $5 games; however, not all the games which should be on sale were in the bin, some of them were on the regular shelves, as a lot of us already noticed.

I asked a very helpful and friendly employee about the entire sale-situation, in particular about the games on sale on the regular shelves (mostly they had the red 'game value' sticker); these games have TWO barcodes! One on the front cover with the 'regular' price, and one barcode on the slim top side. If a cashier uses the barcode on the front, the regular price comes up (say $19.99 for the first Maximo); if the cashier uses the barcode on top of the case, the same game registers for $4.99. Most of the "sale'-games on the regular shelves had a little sticker on them which covered the 'sale'-barcode. This is one way to prevent for certain games the premature sale, and also explains that for some of you games on sale did ring up for the regular price instead of the sales price.

That's ONE CC, evryone recated a bit differently in a different timeframe.

I guess if a CC pulled off a lot of games relatively early this wek, there might be a good chance that you still find some good games on Sunday; but don't expect to find REZ, Dark Cloud 2, and Viewtiful Joe; if you do, you are VERY lucky. I knew very early on about the sale, and I didn't see ONE Viewtiful Joe or Dark Cloud 2.

All the employees I asked in three different CCs told me that they didn't get restocked this week. (probably true, but not certain) After the early rush at the games last weekend I doubt that there are a lot of surprises on Sunday; but becasue the situation was handled so differently of different stores in one area, there might be a slim chance to get lucky. (= some CCs hold back games in storage rooms)

For me the sale is over. After five visits to three different CCs, 58 games, and on average $4.70 for each game, I won't hunt anymore. Slowly I felt like I'm working at a CC...:)

Yesterday I got 7 games for five bucks, two of them off the regular shelves, and a great guy scratched the lil sticker off which covered the 'sales'-barcode and I could check out not at the regular cash registries.

XBOX:
Timesplitters 2

PS2:
Pac-Man Fever
X-Squad
Herdy Gerdy
Sled Storm
City Crisis
Yanya Caballista: City Skater

City Crisis and Yanya Caballista are quirky sub-par titles, in particular Yanya Caballista. It sold in a longbox similar to the early PS1 games, from 2001, includes a "unique fingerboard controller" (whatever that is) and iseems to be kind of a bad cel-shaded mix of Tony Hawk and Jet Set Radio Future which made it surprisingly from Japan to the US. I didn't know about the title.

I thought this is prolly a bad game, sold in an unusual box, with a quirky accessory, didn't sell well, and even the cover looks "funny;" this MUST be a collector's item and forked over another $5 for a sealed game :)

Over the past week or so that I've been reading about this sale here I've visited a few of the CC stores in my area. They all had the $4.99 games out as early as Tuesday or Wednesday. There werent really great selections in any of the 3 or 4 stores that I visited but I did end up getting about 20 or so games combined all for about $100.

No matter how bad some of the games may end up being you just can't complain about a new game for $4.99. I'll probably end up giving a few of them to my newpew and neice for Christmas (they're only 4 -5, everything's new to them).

One of the things that I've heard throughout all of my visits was how surprised the store employees were off all the attention that this sale has gotten since it wasn't ever officiallu advertised. Everything was word of mouth.

Bad luck: Yes

CC employees are asholes: No (well maybe some but thats true with every store)

There seemed to be a lot of confusion about this sale as many employees didn't know about it. Each store seemed to handle it differntly and some manager probably changed their mind mid week. You should go back tomorrow though they might still have some stuff in the back?

I'd call them assholes for lying to my face twice...and I did. When I went last Sun, they didn't look confused at all...they flat out said you have to wait until the 11th (and then the other one said the 10th). They were telling others this too, and then to put them out on Wed instead, thats a dick move in my book. Anyway, I don't think going back tomorrow is going to help me any...since they put the stuff out on Wed I doubt there is stuff in the back (there was enough sports titles to be left over for Sun)...but I guess you never know.

Yay, I went back today just for the hell of it, and I actually found some leftover PS1 goodies.

Mega Man X 6
GTA Collection's Edition (GTA, GTA London, GTA 2)
A random 3 pack: Austin Powers Pinball, GTA, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (the original)

Not bad. Don't underestimate the local CC's PS1 supplies, I guess. Heh.

So is it safe to assume that if there are any DC or PSX games available they will all be 4.99?

Back when I went there were a ton of crappy PSX games on the shelves at their normal prices. I did come across a copy of Phantasy Star Online that would be nice to get now that I have the guide for it. I'm gonna try to go back tomorrow morning to see if anything new was put out in the bin, so at the very least it would be nice to get that (assuming it hasn't already been bought >( ).

I'm going back to the 2 closest CC's near me tommorow morning. I figure I might as well give it a shot. Maybe they got more games in or hid some until the sale started. Even if I don't find anything, I got everything I really wanted except Shining Soul.

Don't sign off on City Crisis just yet! Quirky, yes- I paid 5x what you did awhile back & it's still worth every cent, & one of the gems of my collection IMO. It ain't great, but it's quite challenging & takes just enough skill & precision to nearly drive you mad. Also one of a few games where you actually SAVE people rather than obliterate them (& get penalized if you do!)

I cant think of any game like it except maybe for the latest version of "Choplifter", or an RC copter game.

That's good to know! I haven't looked at the game yet, but I thought the game concept is rare - flying a Helicopter rescuiing people isn't standard fare, and it's certainly worthwhile to check it out for such an incredible low price.

I think the sale was not only ideal to get the good to first-rate games according to our preferences which are on our buy-lists or of which we made mental notes. Sure, I got a MMX7, RE: Code Veronica X, Chaos Legion, Evergrace, Eternal Ring, Haven, Shadow Man 2, Syberia, Azurik, Crimson Sea, and some racers and platformers I wanted;

more importantly, the sale opened the opportunity to get very good games and quirky games I wouldn't have bought in alll likelihood; and that means to try out new gameplay experiences which you might have undeerestimated.

As gamers we like to restrict ourselves to what we know and like, in particular becasue games are expensive, and the choices are a plenty. I'm not into FPS at all, but I have now Timesplitters 2 and give it a try. Dr. Muto, Vex, and Voodoo Vince might rekindle my love for platformers, who knows, although they aren't Jak 2 or SMS. Mario Party 4 and Pac-Man Fever are the first party games I own, and Zoocube, the two Spyhunters, or Twisted Metal Black are CERTAINLY worth checking out although I suspect they might not be high on my preference list.

JetX20 is not a bad game at all, SledStorm could be a bit better, the realistic MotoGP and MotoGP2 require ceratinly skill and they are good and challenging games, and XGRA is fast and furious and I was positively surprised.

I usually go only after high quality games. Gameplay value comes first, then gameplay value, and gameplay value, and then representation of certain stages in game development. I asked myself maybe I should have spent the money on a Suikoden II with guide instead of getting 58 games for five bucks each; after all, I spent $260; and six games on sale are still $30 which might have been spend better on one high quality game.

The reasons even this amount is justified aren't the mere number of games or the low price for each game. The reasons are actually the same why guys collect:

1) You are curious about different and refereshing game play experiences, and you have the freedom to do so the more games you have.

2) Not only the stellar games, nope, all games represent a piece of a certain game era.

3) Even games with severe flaws in execution might turn out to be important in hindsight becasue of certain directions game development will take.

4) The irrational "feel" of authenticity created by the awareness that you own a good mix of actual pieces of present or past game eras.

5) The quirky, goofy, silly, and bad games can be just plain fun.

6) Addictive crazyness.

I certainly switched into a collectors mind because of this sale; and now I switch swiftly back to a gameplayer again.

It was certainly worth to get all these games for this money. Actually, more worth than a Suikoden II with guide; I can now check out City Crisis, and it will be worth it, no matter how the game turns out; and Yanya Caballista? well, I'll keep it sealed, it just looks good on a game shelf.

TOYS R US PRICEMATCHED ME - TWICE - TODAY!

Yes, that's right. I got Chaos Legion, Dino Crisis 3, MGS2: Substance, Frequency, and Okage from TRU for $25. At a second store, I almost got Shining Soul 2, but my receipt was for SS1, but they said they would pricematch if it was SS2. I saved $95 dollars today ;)

Here's what you need:

You need to go armed with a CC flyer from this week, and receipts. Take richter's, and I have AlanD's, which I'll post once I get his permssion to. I will also add mine later today when I get in front of a scanner. PLEASE, if you have receipts still, POST THEM!

Go in, grab your games, and go up and ask to be pricematched. Show them the CC flier, and the receipt copies. THIS IS TOTALLY YMMV. They may take them all back, and consult with a manager. They did at the first TRU I went to - and he said OK! The second, they just said OK. They ignored the word clearance apparently.

They will keep the flyer, and possibly your receipt copy. If everything went according to plan, pay and run like a bandit like I did. Wheeeeeeee!

For this to work, you NEED a receipt with the game you want on it. So whoever still has them, PLEASE scan!

Ok, this is what I got away with. I arrived at 10:55am, the doors opened, I saw lil baskets bins filled with crappy sports titles.

Huh. Glad you guys made it out with some deals, 'cause I got screwed.

I got Midtown Madness 3 for Xbox (which I wanted anyway) for $20.

I briefly considered getting Blaster Master for PS1, then thought better of it (having heard it was crap, and not wanting to ruin my fun memories of the original). Saw a copy of Phantasy Star Online for GameCube, but knew I wouldn't play it much and didn't think twice about it.

Everything else in the $4.99 boxes was either sports stuff or PS1 crap that was headed straight for the bargain bins when it came out anyway. And I knew the jig was up when, at 11:05, I heard two people flat-out ask the CC employee if he had a list of the five-dollar games. I also saw one CC employee walk in and, before even clocking into his shift, start scanning the aisles for cheap stuff.

Oh well. I got one game I wanted, even if I paid more. And I'll certainly get my money's worth out of it.

Anyone know if the stuff on eBay is still going for fire-sale prices, or have they started to rise by now?

Eh, nothing new at mine. All they've done since Monday is moved a bunch of PSX games into the bin. I got to hear some funny people talk about games. :) A couple moms, young boys, and a teenage girl, all of them clueless. The teenage girl was explaining the ratings to one of the moms. I had to keep from chuckling when she said that "'Y' is for 'Youth'".

I did manage to find Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast again, and it rang up as 4.99. Not an exceptional deal, but nice to finally have. It's gonna be a bitch to open, though. The ladies were having a hell of a time trying to get the case thing off of it, so eventually she just sold me it as is. I'll have to try to snap the plastic and pry it open.

I also checked out the Toys R Us right next to the Circuit City. I can't do any price matching, though, since I don't have a working printer and the flyer in the store didn't even seem to mention the sale. Didn't see much of interest for 7.99. They had a table of "buy 1, get 1 free" stuff, but most of it sucked and/or was overpriced. They had a big stack of Wild Arms 3. I wish I could have price matched that. They also had a couple N64 games (one of the main things I was looking for), but they can kiss my ass if they expect me to pay 9.99 for Perfect Dark or 19.99 for Pokemon Snap.

All in all, a complete bust. :/ Game shopping hasn't been going so great for me lately.

Nothing but crap.

I walked out with two Demos. Finally found Exhibition 5 for Xbox and the GameCube Demo Preview disc. Wish they put out demos more often. And priced them REASONABLY. Fortunately, both were $5. So it wasn't a total loss. I did want both and liked the prices.

Ehhh, I just tried doing the price match at TRU and they wouldn't do it. Showed them the actual receipts (not copies) and the CC ad but they said they couldn't match because it was clearly marked a clearance sale.

Oh well, I got most of the titles I wanted from CC on the 4th, so I'm not complaining. :P

Well all the titles that I left plus more were back on the floor today in the cardboard display.........that display/games must of been put away..(I hate liars)

So he picked up 22..titles....that I told him to get and 3 just for the heck of it..Mostly xbox games..a few PS2 and one PS title.

I'm taking half of them off his hands(to keep)....then I don't know what he'll do with the rest.

I went to 2 circuit cities this morning and managed to scrounge up some decent stuff:

GBA
Medabots: Metabee
Pocky & Rocky with becky (for a friend; I had it already)

PS2
Kinetica

PS1
Eternal Eyes- rang up $3.96!

That's all that was left, really. I'm pissed about the copy of extreme G 3 that was more or less pulled from my hands, though.

The CC ad in Arizona did not picture any games and stated it was only on select clearance titles.

They really did a good job covering thier asses by not listing everything and then having pissed off customers who didnt know in advance like us. ;)

Did the sale officially start yet? And does anyone know if they will be restocking the games?

An update...

Pricematching is harder than I thought. Remember my TRUs? Well, #1 did it again for me today (DOA VBall, PN 03, Pikmin, Freaky Flyers, Metal Arms), but #2, which said they would do it, now said the games needed to be in stock. 7 games in my hands... had to go back.

Another TRU (games needs to be in ads) and another CompUSA (needs to be in stock), and I've only found one place. D:

TRU in Totowa, NJ. Take receipts, go hog wild.

I'll have a bunch more to post, culled from fatwallet and from an ENORMIS friend of mine, adding a good 50-60 games to the list.

Good luck!

Any additional receipts would be greatly appreciated, especially Dark Cloud 2. I don't know if my local TRU or EB does pricematching but if they do I'd like to get it all in one sweep since my mileage may vary.

Both Dark Cloud 1 & 2 should be on my receipts. If not for some reason I have about 8 more receipts I can scan - especially if you want kiddie gameboy games.

You're right. My mistake. I didn't see Dark Cloud two on one of the receipts I printed out. Thank you for sharing. Hopefully I'll get lucky.

I picked up 4 more games on Saturday. I might be able to hit a couple tonight to pick over any remains.

GBA: Agassi Tennis

PS2: Gravity Games - Dirt - Vert or something...

PS1 - Tyco RC Assault with a Battery, Lego Island 2

Overall I was quite pleased with the 24 games I scored so far. No, I didn't find any Dark Cloud 2's or Viewtiful Joes but to be honest I didn't expect to. With prices that cheap the good stuff goes fast and of course employees will gobble it up. I was quite happy to walk away with what I did.

I took a drive up the PALISADES Mall with my wife and son..

Went to Dave & Busters..EB/Two Arcades etc,etc.

I hit the Circuit City in the mall..
I was surprised...they still had a Cardboard display with $5.00 Games in it...Two of them..
An employee(She) was putting games in the Cardboard display..She had a whole cart full of them.(Sames titles as I got)..
She was taking them out of the security clear plastic cases that are usually on the shelves...(she also had a list.
So what she was doing was taking the games that scan for $5.00 off the shelf and putting them into the TWO Cardboard displays.
I was picking through games that were in the Cardboard display while she was coming over with a few at a time.
They had at least 50 PS titles 20 GBA..20-30 PS2 Games and I'd say 10 Xbox titles.
But I got there while she was putting doing all this and I honestly couldn't wait around...I didn't go to the mall for Circuit City
The games were not yet marked $5.00..so to verify they were $5.00 She had to take whatever I picked up and scan it at the far register..
So I grabbed a few...I'm not greedy....Stuff I will play...I'm really not looking to buy a lot of these....
They had a bunch of games and a ton of 1 cent demos type items....Like the THU in the pick.
I thought about buying them all,but she said some may scan higher then 1 cent..

I was a pain to keep scanning everything...She had to even though she had some kind of a list.

Our bag went off at the door alarm and the employee was shocked that we got all those games for $5.00 each.

So I believe the sale is still going on..She was still putting games out...a lot of them....Getting them off the shelves then coming back to the Cardboard displays..Working REAL SLOW....

If I would of waited around..I probably would of came out of there with a ton of good games....

I took my Son to ChuckE CheeseS..It was So packed we didn't stay for long.
On the way home my wife makes a quick U turn to Circuit City..
I wasn't even thinking about looking for more $5.00 games.
They had 2 PS2 tiles and 2 PS sports titles in the cardboard display.
I picked up the two PS2 titles.
IHRA Drag Racing 2
REEL FISHING III
Nothing special but I passed them up every other time so I bought them...I didn't bury myself in flea market spending today so I said the heck with it.
They did have a rack next to it with games ranging from $10-20..Decent Games..
I searched that whole rack to find one Great game(forget title) with a $5.00 sticker on it like in picks, but someone wrote a 1 before the 4 making it $14.99..I didn't feel like arguing the price so I left it.

I had a hunch so I started to look around through the Clear Cased housed games on the shelves and found the NCAA FINAL FOUR 2002 ..lol..hidden withing them..
Eh,since I found it I bought it.
I didn't look as much as I wanted to after a store employee started to stand around and watch me...It felt kind of awkward.

I think these are the last of the last in that CC.
