Guess I should note that this isn't the official soundtrack, but a fanmade soundtrack, and there are differences. Longer songs and such.
Also, here's the Japanese Commercial for the game...

It is refreshing to see a truly unique game on the market. It is even better that it is only $20. I bought 3 copies. All of the EB games I went to on recieved two copies. It will truly have a cult following once word gets around. I hope this is a new trend. The last time I was this excited about a quirkey game was Intelligent Cube.
Highly Reccommend. Go out and get one or more copies. Support the trend to import great Japanese games.
Game on all!!!

i got some shooting stars, but cant figure out how to access them...are these the unlockables? and how do i find them after i have them?

I picked up my copy today at EB in Rocafeller Center - it was their only copy - I figured no one around in this immediate area would be interested in it.
I cant wait to get home and watch the intro again (and sing along of course, very loudly I might add) :)
where is this magic EB...I've never seen it...I bought my copy at kings plaza since it was the only gamestop in the area that had it stocked.
shooting stars are assigned a button, so when you're in star gazing mode there should be a tutorial or something in that effect. getting into that menu will show you which shooting stars you have(buttons that are highlighted)

Is it just me or does the camera suck in this game? I can't ever turn around to change sides of the ball. I've mastered moving forward and backward with the dual stick control scheme, but I can't move the little guy around the ball itself.

yes camera does suck at times...
to strafe around your katamari hold the left analog stick up and the right one down, I believe that makes you strafe right do the opposite (L stick down, R stick up) to go the opposite direction

Change sides of the ball = press both analog sticks in (L3 & R3)
Move the prince without moving the ball = press either analog stick UP while not moving the other stick. Only works when it's stopped, I think.
It's tank controls :)
Yeah once in a while there's some camera control problems, but hard to complain for $20 hehe Think of it as part of the challenge.

I have read reviews of this game, and saw a review of it on g4. I could care less what they say, I just think the game looks super fun. I honestly thought it was going to be a jap only release, but at 20, there is no way i won't pass this one up.

I have come to a simple way to put it for people who are unsure of buying this game.

Just finished the game (in about 5 hours). Granted I haven't collected every item (I'm about 70% there).
Brilliant title, extremely addictive, and I'll be going back to 100% the thing. The soundtrack is the best one I've heard in quite a while.
I maxed out at 876m and some change on the moon level (eternal #3). There was virtually nothing major left for me to get, just some smallish islands. That level was wild.

HOLY CRAP.
THere's nothing more enjoyable than the first time you truly "feel" the game. Level 4, you start out on a table in a house and by the end of it you make the people run away from you out of fear. Amazing!
classicb
09-28-2004, 07:05 AM
this game is hard to walk away from even after you beat it. as many on here are doing me and my girlfriend compare the size of our balls of junk we roll up. while the "build the moon level" lets you build the biggest ball. I like the restriction of level 4 (I also like the level 4 song) and barley being able to fit your ball through the house or even getting it stuck. while I see the lasting apeal I think the first play through has to be the best. no matter how big of stuff I had rolled up in previous levels I was still saying "awe cool" each level I rolled up something even bigger. even during the credits rolling is fun. just an amazing game. I guess only time will tell if this game makes my top 10 of all time... yes its that fun... or at least to me it seems to be so far. :)
and I'm not that casual with mentioning a game that could challenge my top 10

Y'know, I've been doing a bit of thinking regarding Katamari's future rarity. It's gotten high praise from every publication (print and online), it's sold out almost everywhere right out of the gate, and it's only $20. Adding all of those things up, I'm kinda starting to lean towards the 'not rare' side of things.
It's only been a week since it's release. There are a few things, though, that when coupled with the above comments, might make you think the same way.
1. Namco had this at E3, and there were a pretty good number of folks playing it. The Namco rep I talked to told me that they were taking a gamble with this one. I think that their gamble paid off. They realize it, I'm sure. If most of the stores are out of the game at launch, don't you think that Namco will realize that there is a demand for this game that they didn't forsee?
2. I was told that Namco has Katamari locked as one of their 'big' titles to round out the year--along with Taiko Drum, Ace Comabt 5, and the already released Street Racing Syndicate.
I dunno, just kinda thinking aloud here.

Rare or not guys, it doesn't even matter anymore. Not to me at least, because I'm just happy to have such a kick ass game.
Actually, I hope it becomes super common, that means that others have bought it and experienced it as well! That also means a sequal and other odd Japanese games for us!
Don't buy it for future rarity purposes, buy it because it rocks, and because it's the most fun your 20.00 will give you!

There's already a sequel in development which should introduce net play between 4 ppl.
I'm still torn between waiting a PAL release (at 20€, no more) and importing. I doubt I can hold up much longer though. :o

Hate to be a useless post, but I also need to chime in and say how excellent the game is. Everyone I've showed it to absolutely loves it. How cool is it that we got this one!?!

Wow. I just got this today, and I can safely say that it's the weirdest game I've ever played. Ever. And that's in comparison to things like Bishi Bashi Special 3. Katamari Damacy makes Wario Ware look as bland as video poker. That's a hell of an accomplishment, if you ask me.

After reading that article it looks like if you don't have it you can just wait a while. Namco basically says that they have plenty of copies ready to ship to retailers who order more ... Doesn't seem too rare according to the Namco source.

the only way this title will be rare is if retailers continue to drag their feet. which they seem to be doing. talk to your local game store because I doubt they have any on order just like the article says Namco needs the consumers to ask the retailers to reorder. I was just in my local gamestop and they don't plan on ordering any more.

They're selling for an average of $26, so I listed with a BIN of $35 and I'll see how they do. They're sealed, so if nobody wants them at that price, I'll return half and sit on the rest until Christmas.

UPDATE!
Found it last night, on the fourth try -- Circuit City (none), Media Play (none), first GameStop (none), second GameStop (spot on the shelf and a copy in the case).
Got mine for about $18 by being indecisive -- he offered a pre-order for GT4 -- I said I'd wait, and he knocked off 15 percent in return for me getting the pre-order. So I bit.
What a fantastic game. Incredibly original. Definitely my favorite non-racing PS2 title, bar none. Way to go, Namco!
Also, I hit 4 meters on the Sixth Star without trying very hard. That was a blast. :D

Anybody who reads these forums and doesn't have this game yet has to be crazy. I've never seen a game so loved by all on these forums. Let alone a new game. Even if you don't have a PS2 you should pick it up because I know alot of you like to stay a genereation behind. I think this one will still be a hard find in the future even if they do restock the stores because its fun and most people are going to hang onto it. Yes its easy to beat but its also easy to replay over and over again. :)
