I REALLY suck at the Corona Borealis stage. The presence of crowns aren't very obvious. See if you can try and find more than sixty. ;)A LOT of them are planted in the ground in the fields where vegetables are. I got 77. That's Seventy-seven. :P

Eternal 2 is a big gyp. In order to actually OPEN it, you have to roll EVERYTHING up. And once you rolled EVERYTHING up, what fun is it to do again? I am working for the MOON though. It's the only one I haven't gotten. The Moon should be fun as it's great to explore.
-snip-
BTW, any word on what's in the Volcano? What is Demo Island? And where on the world is the levels (Like Eternal 2) located? It seems there are three main areas in the game all separated from eachother, but are they all in the same world? Can I access the smaller levels from the main Moon world? Or are they completely closed off from the real (Big/Moon) world?
The previous levels are on their own little islands in the World level. Not sure where, but they were in my "collection" after I went eternal on World. By the time I found them they were too small for my katamari to fit into (it just picked the whole island right up) but if you were able to get to them while you were smaller in the World level that might be cool. But perhaps the ocean is too deep and would prevent that.
It does look like there is a little town inside the volcano, but we couldn't pick it up when we managed to roll over it.
The fun in redoing any of the levels after rolling them all up once is finding the things missing in your collection before you grow too big and they fade from resolution. What I DON'T like about level two is not being able to get back into the starting area after I've left it.

Has anyone translated the music yet? Also, anyone know what the significance is for using such a weird mixture of music in the game? I'm very curious about that one English tune. Seems out of place, but very well done.
Well if it's any interest, the soundtrack has been posted in alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.video-games and I notice the nfo file has a couple of details on the tracks, etc.

It's not possible to get to the other islands in the Moon level until you grow to a certain size. The ocean has a barrier - you need to be whatever that size is on those cones above the school playground (I forget what it is) before you can really move beyond that beginning area.
You can't really get to the demo place, either, when you're small. It's really just something you can pick up.
On a side note - I wonder how big this thread is now? 13m? We need to make it bigger!

It's called Demo Island, or Demo Town, I can't remember which. But it IS obtainable, I've gotten it several times. Just make sure that you're not too big.

I've already picked up Demo Island a few times. There's simply no way to roll up to it when you're small sadly. And by the time you can get to it, you're too big to make anything out.
Maybe it's something significant like it was used in testing stages so they plopped it in there as an easter egg. Or maybe it's a big dome and inside the dome is that Tutorial intro when you are learning the controls in that big empty room.
I have a feeling there are a lot of secrets in the game we haven't found yet. I really have to get Eternal on Moon or I'll never find them.
I'll keep trying. My first try, I got to 756 Meters. Since then I haven't gotten close to that.

When you are looking at your catalog, you can zoom in and out on the thumbnail using R2/L2Heh. I never thought of that.
...
Strange.. It's NOWHERE in the catalog. I'll have to get a real close look. Going into Moon level... :o
Edit: There's no way to get a close look! Question, do things you pick up on levels that you lose on (i.e. Don't get to the required size) still count? I am wondering if I picked it up on a run through that I lost on. And didn't get it on my winning time. Or not. I dunno. But I picked it up again this time but lost. And it hasn't shown up anywhere.

Okay, found Demo Island. It's in the top of the volcano cone. Whether or not you can get up there and still be small enough to explore is anybody's guess (I'm leaning towards no).

Maybe you DO have to beat the level to keep it in the collection. Sucks. Guess I'll have to keep trying.
In that case, what does the description for it say? I know Pigeon Town (Or whatever) shows up with a description of "We were here the other day."
BTW, which island has the "House" levels on it?

You bastiches! Heh... thanks for the advice, though. I'll try it again after I do good on Taurus. That and Ursa Major are perhaps the most frustrating missions in the game. You never know when you pick up a seemingly inanimate object, only to find that it somehow qualifies as a friggin' cow/bear. >_<

Jasoco: Yea, you have to beat the level for stuff to be added to your collection :)That's cool! So it really must have been the Technical demo they used when the game was being created. How clever is it to hide it in a volcano and make it a secret? I wonder if there's a way to get in there and play that level.

I just played it for the first time after several days of owning it. My first impression was..."wtf? these controls suck! if the whole game is gonna be like this then I'm not playing it!"
BUT, then after failing the second level a few times, I remembered that the analog sticks I was using were having some problems because they sometimes just shut off randomly. That would explain a lot :D
So I just grabbed my other controller and had at it. This one worked fine. I must agree, it's a really fun game. I enjoyed it a lot.

ALright, just to add one more rave to the list, this game freaking rocks! My copy showed up Monday, and I palyed for a little over an hour. Yesterday I was home sick and played another 3 or so. Then I wasn't able to sleep, so I started playing again around 11:30. When I was done, I had beaten the game and it was 2am! I was surprised that you can get the ending without doing the constellations. I find the collision detection a bit frustrating at times. More than once I was stuck on something, and had to move around like mad losing a good bit of heighth to finally brea free. Still, this game in ingenious. Fix some of the collisio problems and the camera, and another planet or two, and I'd gladly shell at $50 for the sequel.
Oh, and screw you guys for making me waste my time on this. Now I have a bunch of shooters and eternals to unlock, and to make sure I got all the royal presents... stupid Kingof the Cosmas!

Hehe..I have had this game for almost exactly a week today. I beat it a few days ago with all the constellations.
I have managed to only get about 3 or 4 shooting stars, but they are obtainable on all levels. Basically to get one, you have to reach the goal within a set time limit. On the first one for instance I think you have to hit the 10cm mark within the first 2 min of the game.
Anyway, the only levels I am really having trouble with are the constellation levels. I simply don't know where everything is. So my constellations aren't that big. But I now have a nice strategy on the Make the Moon level. I managed to get 643m on my first try playing that level. It took me about 5 tries, but I finally managed to get Eternal for Make the Moon last night. The secret to getting that is to pick up those islands quickly when you can. Also pick up those tornados! I was in the past sticking to the outside and grabbing the shoorms at the end. But what finally did it was staying in the middle area of the world last night and making sure I grabbed all the islands.
Also I have only managed to pick up about 189 countries on the credits so far..but I think there are many many more than that...
The game is awesome and I have to thank both this board, and AA forums for getting me to look for this title. I didn' t have any trouble finding it at my local GameStop nearest me. They reported to have 3 copies in the store I was at with more listed as on the way. Since then, they now show as having about 4 copies with still more on the way. So this game may not become as rare as we had all hoped with the deserved hype the title has recieved.
Now if I can only do better on the constellations and make them bigger. By the way, could just be me..but some of the cousins don't appear until you unlock the Eternal levels...I found a new cousin last night on Make the Moon in Eternal mode under the tree in the center of the small lake/pond at the beginning of the game. I had to be a certain size of course to snag that cousin however...

Actually it's 1 minute in Star 1. Only frustrations I've had with it: getting stuck in/on things, camera screwing me up. Also ticked about not finding all the swan eggs in Cyngus level, anyway you can tell them apart?
-^Cro§Bow^-
10-20-2004, 05:49 PM
No...the Cygnus level like all the constellations I have horrible scores for. My best is Cancer where I managed to find like 106 crabs...but that was still only like 91% or something of them...and I knew were a few more were but couldn't find the way to reach them. Or the small ones that keep running to the dog house!!..Errr..can't ever get all of them either...
As for the swans...I have no idea how to tell them apart. But most of the ones on the mousetraps are actual swans. Makes sense since when you pick them up the trap sends you across the screen to bump into something and thereby knock a few off!!..
I think I managed to get 90% on the Virgo constellation one as well...
I just have fun doing Make the Moon on eternal since I can literally pick up everything in the world level without a time limit.
Wonder how big a Katamari can get on that level? hmm...

Yeah, it's VERY easy to "beat". The fun is in collecting all of the items, getting all of the cousins, eternals, and shooting stars.
I got all three eternals last night. I thought it would be impossible to gett 800m on that stage, but it's do-able. I love how everything, including the island you were previously rolling around picking up tiny bits on, is just a tiny circle in the water by the end of this stage :)
SegaAges
10-21-2004, 09:09 AM
oh, hehe, i didn't even try for secrets. i didn't even know there were 3 eternals. i only got 1 present for the fact is that i didn't feel like searching through an entire stage for a present while i was also trying to beat the goal.
DAMN! 800m. i beat it with 308m, and i did it literally with 3 seconds left (that was also my fault, i got lost and couldn't find my way back to the main land to get more stuff). you know what i am talking about. you can go in the water at 60m, and i forgot which way i came in from, so i had to sit there getting crap from like 5 islands.
the best level, by far, is one of the constellation levels where you start at 10cm, and work your way up to 10m, but i have gotten up to about 25m on that level. that is what i figured the entire game would be like, you start off super small to the point where rats are bigger than you, and work your way up to being able to roll over the entire building you started in.
good game though. i guess it is time for me to start on secrets or something, and time for me to keep track of where i am going and have been so that i don't forget what direction i come from like in the last level.

And the kicker is... check out his tagline: "Jevon Jenkins enjoys all types of games, especially those where the programmer's imagination is evident. He can be reached at : jevon64@hotmail.com"
You'd think he'd enjoy a game that shows more imagination than most tripe over the past couple of years LOL

This is one of the coolest games I've ever played. I just got it yesterday and have played it for about three hours. But I just keep replaying Star 1. I keep thinking I can get the katamari bigger than 16.3cm but I cant pick up the bowl on the platform that you start out on. It wiggles though so I know I'm close to being big enough. Once I pick that up then maybe I could even get the desk lamp...? Anybody got any tips for me? I'd like to continue on with the rest of the game eventually :)

I got it to 18cm 18mm on Star 1. I just remember at the end I got those fruits on top of the cushions at the corner of the room :P
I'm sure it can get even bigger though

There are a lot of American gamers who don't care for Japanese wackiness, and Jevon appears to be one of them, despite his claim of "[enjoying] all types of games." So I don't hold that against him. He just shouldn't be reviewing KD.
Jevon is also a pixel-whore, as evidenced by his line about the "horrid lackluster graphics." Game Informer's token female reviewer complained about KD's visuals, too. I could cut these people some slack if they'd cared to mention that the basic visuals are for the sake of gameplay, since you can roll up every damn thing you see, but that would require technical insight they don't have.
It's Jevon's slam of the sound that really blows my mind. "Lousy audio"? KD has the best soundtrack of the year. More evidence that he doesn't enjoy games with a distinct Japanese flavor.
The good news is that Jevon's review is so horribly written and edited that it's impossible to take seriously.

back to the presents, my favortie is the king mask(i think its called "cool mask" or something... makes you look like the king of all cosmos...i wear it often.
Just got this game today and am finding myself very addicted to it! But now I'm stuck on Star 7 and can only get up to 3.5m... :/

KD's one those rare games that shows us its not the graphics that make the game, its the gameplay that makes the game.

got it today at about 4, just now beat the moon level...
this is the most inventive game i've played since blast corps and mario 64.
traded in a couple DVD's at EB, and they doubled my credit for pre-ordering GTA: SA, so i guess i'll have that monday...but i basically got KD for free. :D
seriously, namco has the best soundtracks ever...this is right up there with R4 and mr. driller.
even my roommate, who owns a PS2 just for madden and GTA is a believer now. as soon as the title sequence started, it was "wow, this is worth it just for the theme song!"
the sense of scale rules...it's just so satisfying laying the smack down on a cat that whooped you a few minutes prior by rolling him in to your ball. :D
yes, i know this post is fragmented, but damn...i can't believe something like this exists. LOL

Well, I finally had a chance to play this.."game"..yesterday. Being that I was at a game shop where I try a lot of games, I kept an open mind.
Three words summed it up:
WHAT
THE
FUCK?!?!?!?!
----
My review:
As far as I can tell, the goal of this game is to roll the ball around and pick up all the crap on the ground.
I've had too many of these run-around-and-pick-up-shit quests before. (Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie:Coins and notes)
Just in case it "got better", I FORCED myself to play this game for 15 minutes.
I really wish I'd done ANYTHING else in those 15 minutes.
THIS.GAME.SUCKS!!!!!
Are you playing the game drunk/stoned/high or something? Is there something I am missing, or is the whole concept of rolling a ball around and picking shit up all there is to it?
And, are you saying this game is good, simply because it is so weird and fucked up, that there is nothing like it on the market today?!?! Or, because you think it will become rare?
WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL ABOUT THIS TWENTY DOLLAR GAME?!!?!??!
argh. I'm going to go play gradius to try to relieve the anger this game has caused me.
And no, I did not buy it.

Not to mention for $20 you can't realistically expect the next Fable (graphics wise I mean).

Nah, it has nothing to do with the price point or the number of artists on the payroll. The items in KD are low-poly because virtually all of them can be rolled up. There's very little "window dressing" in KD's worlds. Higher polygon counts for each item would require fewer overall items, which would damage the gameplay. Also, the simplistic visuals allow the game to hum along at 60 fps, which further improves the gameplay.
I can't say enough about the elegance and brilliance of KD's design.

I played through the whole game sober and loved it. I like it because of it's simplicity. To me, it's a nice fun game like solitare or checkers that I can just pick up and play. Often times I get tired or quest games and I just want to play something that I can stop playing just as quickly as I started. I don't have to trudge through a 2 hour dungeon or level in Katamari, nor do I have to keep playing for an extra hour just to get through a cutscene or find a save point.
I think Katamari mostly appeals to more classic gamers because a lot of the stuff in the Atari/NES era was just pick up and play for a little while each day untill you beat it, and then do it all over again. It's a throwback to the simple gameplay driven games of yesterday.
