FAKE!

Surely you jest sir. I have it on good authority that Spinal, Nintendog, T-shaped Tetris block, and Carl from GTA are in the final roster, just like the picture says. How can you doubt this validity?

I just got this game a few days ago along with my Japanese Wii, and... words fail me...

I honestly haven't had this much fun with a game for a (very) long time! They've taken everything that made Melee great and polished it to the max: the graphics are beautiful, the music and sound effects are amazing, the amount of unlockables is absolutely insane, and the game is FUN as hell! Some of the "purists" argue that the game lost a little of its edge because it's been (very slightly) slowed down compared to Melee, but what it lost in speed it more than gained in smoothness and overall polish. Also, the story\adventure mode is very epic and enjoyable, and takes at least 6-7 hours to complete (add 2-3 more hours if you go for 100% completion).

I could go on and write 5-6 pages about what makes this game so great, but I prefer to stop this post here and get back to playing! :) Feel free to ask away if you have any questions about the game... although I can't guarantee I'll reply quickly as I'll most likely be glued to my screen ;)

Overall: easily 10/10, and already GOTY for me.

Metal Gear first appeared on the MSX computer. It was then ported to the NES as an inferior version to the original. The original MSX versions were then emulated on the Playstation 2 inside Metal Gear Solid 3 itself.

3 are on Nintendo consoles? Let's see, you got -
Metal Gear - An inferior port.
Snake's Revenge - Made without the involvement of Hideo Kojima and made strictly for American and European markets. It is not even canon with reguards to the main Metal Gear storyline.
Twin Snakes - A remake of the original solid which appeared on Playstation.

So, pretty much, two official titles, one an inferior port and one a remake. Right, Nintendo consoles have had one major Metal Gear game, a remake, released on one of their systems in the last 15 years. It now makes perfect sense as to why they would have Snake as a character in the new Smash Bros game. PERFECT sense.

The reason no one really complained about Master Chief (actually, a seperate Spartan soldier, not Master Chief at all, but a character named Nicole) in Dead or Alive 4 or even extra characters in Soul Calibur 2 was that these games were NOT representations of each companies created universe, respectively. Smash Bros is different in the respect that it's a collection of everything Nintendo. Stages, music, characters, ALL Nintendo. Suddenly throwing Snake into this mix just makes it a surreal collection of Nintendo characters... with a guy named Snake thrown in. It just doesn't work out, and, as I've said before, it kills the soul of the series.

-GoTaS

Well it's nice to know that you are just a 100% wrong and clueless about it

I just shake my head at why you think it kills the soul of the series when if anything it makes it stronger than it was before.

We're going to need to get some DP games going. Why is there no voice chat? It seems like Nintendo is one generation behind in all new advancements - disks for N64, online play for GC, and now amenities for the online play for Wii. What I really want to see is a true server browser for those who want it on the Wii games, along with voice chat. While I love Nintendo, I must admit that their online policies are asinine. Oh well, I guess I shouldn't be complaining; at least there IS online play.

Why no voice chat? I'd assume because smash is a game that's going to be played by a wide variety of people, and Nintendo doesn't want to take flak from little kids being taunted by guys telling them they're gonna rape them in their sleep. Especially in a game where you can play Mario!

I've never had a good experience with voice chat in a fighting game, anyway. Usually it's the other person whining and bitching when I'm beating them, and nasty, nasty trash talk when I'm losing.

heybtbm
03-06-2008, 09:50 AM
Let's make one thing clear. Voice chat scares the shit out of Nintendo. They want to eliminate the potential for trash talking and tarnishing their "family friendly" image. It's typical corporate cowardice...no doubt the decision was made by lawyers, not designers.

It's sad too, because voice chat works when you're playing with/against friends. I would wager most people who are "against" such features are the typical Nintendo Mafia who tow the line and insist that every decision "N" makes is a good one or antisocial losers who want everyone else to be friendless and miserable like they are. Just a guess.

if you REALLY want voice chat do what my friends will be doing. Turn on your 360, go to a game such as an arcade game like Aegis Wing. Sit in the lobby and turn down your xbox volume, use the xbox mic to have chat between 2-4 people and then just play on your wii, problem solved. Another solution is using a computer chat client but to me xbox is easier.

Pissy, much?

Not at the morons I was referring to in the quote you highlighted. Those people make me laugh, not get angry.

I'm just a little pissy at Nintendo for their cowardice and being behind the curve...again. Regardless, it's probably a moot point in the end. Voice chat or not, this game will be legendary. I've been waiting for this one for years.

Okay, if I'm lucky, I'll get to play a slight bit of the game before I head off to college. However, due to a community service dealy at my college, I'm going to have to forgo coming home this weekend, so that's TWO weeks away from my beloved Brawl. :(

But hey, my roommate will be getting it, so I'll get my fix of the game. Plus, one more week after that, and I'll be on my Easter break. Oh, THAT will be enjoyable for sure. :-D

I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but doesn't anyone think the fact that the online service is provided FREE by Nintendo might have something to do with the lack of voice chat?

Given a choice between paying and getting voice chat, and getting it free but with no voice chat, that's a complete nobrainer for me, and I'd imagine a lot of people, to get it free. Whip our your phone/cell phone/VoIP/360 etc. if you feel talking to your friends while you play is absolutely necessary.

Apollo
03-06-2008, 07:40 PM
On the whole voice chat issue, I think it's only needed in certain games. You don't need it for games like Brawl, since it's pretty much you or one other person, but even then, a lot of communication isn't needed if you know the person you're playing with.

Compare this to other games, like CoD4, where the best teams are usually ones where the teammates communicate almost every action they do, and letting their team know what they are doing (UAV, choppers, etc).

But mostly, I'm not upset about a lack of voice chat in Brawl mostly because I don't need to tell 14 year old kids that I rocked the shit out of em. They'll be able to see me the whole time. They'll know.

I had to do a system update when I first put it in, but after that it worked no problem. Early impressions is that the characters seem more balanced , and there sure is a lot of stuff going on...on screen. Items, backgrounds, and moving stages, but it seems a lot of the classic stages are available, and this custom stage builder sounds neat.

I just came from a Gamestop Tourney. I was just an observer but all I can say is HOLY COW. This game was made for Nintendo Fans, and anyone who has liked the previous ones will be blown away. The tourney I went to was well ran, and most of all people were having fun. The graphics on this game are bright and colorful. Most of all, I saw this game on a 40 inch Samsung and it looked beautiful. This is THE MUST HAVE multiplayer game for the Wii. I did not see it going online, but I am sure that it will play fine. The lack of voice chat is understandable, and I bet was a protective move. When gems like this come out, the crap about the lack of quality games for the Wii begins to shrink for me. And to think that next month is Mario Kart. Crap I am behind.....

Is the update from the disc, or do you get it online?

I'm not sure, I have wii connect 24, so it could have been either. What happened to me, was I put the game in, powered on, and when I went to select the disc channel is was greyed out like there was no game in. When I clicked it, it said their was a Wii update needed, and I could choice to upgrade or turn off the wii. I chose to upgrade, got the typical status bar, took about a min, the system reset and everything was cool.

I also heard about the game not working on some Wii systems. I had the game seem to hang on me for a moment between loading screens which had me sweating a bit, but everything turned out cool.

I've been playing since a little after midnight. This game, without a doubt, features more targeted fan service than any game before it. The amount of stuff crammed into the game is ludicrous.

Just the in-game music test is worth the $50.

Nintendo knocked this one totally out of the park.

I can't say "game of the year" without waiting out some of the inevitably unbelievable games that are due in the coming months, but this game will certainly be in the running come January.

Don't sweat it. Buy one of the literally 1000's of copies each Best Buy, Target, Walmart, etc. has. This game is the exactly opposite of "hard to find". I haven't seen such massive displays for a game since Halo 2/Halo 3.

That’s right! You can use your Wi-Fi connection to send stages you’ve made to Nintendo! (However, you can’t submit repeatedly. Maybe just once per day?)
And a stage selected from the entire daily collection will be sent from Nintendo to your Wii. A stage made by someone else will come to you over the Internet once per day!
DUN DUN DUNNNNNN! That’s the shocking truth. This means you’ll be able to experience a new stage every day—the flavor of the day, if you will. However, the plan is for that stage to vanish once one day has passed. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

My friends and I thought that was a bit of a problem with Melee, and it's amplified here. I'm on a 42" widescreen, and I feel like I do when I'm trying to play Geometry Wars, where I need to be like 2 feet from the screen to see everything that's going on.

Love the game, but that's really my biggest complaint. I've thought about it though, and I don't see how they could fix it without compromising other game features.

Turning off all the items makes a huge difference - but it eliminates a large part of the fun and strategy, which is fighting for the items as much as fighting each other. I tend to just pick stages with less going on though if it's my choice.

Lo and behold, when I logged into the the WFC today, my Wii retrieved a new homerun video, a new screenshot, and two new stages. I guess I should have just been a little more patient. The only thing i don't like about this - apparently, every time you update the new stages you lose your previously downloaded levels. I don't really see how they could get around it, given the Wii's diminutive storage capacity, but it still sucks. What if we get some brilliant stage that's tons of fun? It's gone in a day, regardless? Doesn't seem right.
