Oh my. Solid Snake vs Pit vs Sonic the Hedgehog vs Unarmored Samus.
I think I just crapped my pants in excitement.
Yeah, Miyamoto didn't say Sonic was officially in, but I think the writing is on the wall.
This title will sell two million Wii's alone.
Kudos to Nintendo.
I doubt there's a next generation title I'm geeking out for more than this one.

The addition of Snake I think is significant, because he's not a Nintendo character, like most of the other characters. Maybe this does open the door for Sonic.
Sonic won't be in this edition though. If Sonic was in this version of SSB, it would be all over the marquee already.

Uh uh. You clearly don't remember the last Smash Bros. launch. They announced a couple of new characters early (the Ice Climbers, for instance) but left some of the bigger surprises (Zelda) for closer to release. It' very possible Sonic could be in this game. In other news, NoJ has launched a website asking fans who they'd like to see in the game, so I'd say anything's possible at this point.

It's possible, or even likely, that Nintendo hasn't finalized the agreement with Sega. Or they're holding back more information to create even more hype, but based off of this line by Miyamoto:
"There are probably possibilities for other third parties as well, and it maybe that even [now] there are corporate discussions going on about including some of these other characters."
It would seem that Sonic would be the most likely candidate to fill out their roster.
Additionally, Nintendo of Japan is sponsoring a "write-in" for Japanese fans to vote for additional characters.
Extremely encouraging.
I'm not one for speculation, but it's looking probable, if not a sure thing, we're going to see Sega's mascot make an appearance in Brawl.
Could you imagine if Sega dipped into their well and put in characters like Alex Kidd or, dare I say it, Nei in SSB:B? Starting to sweat, need to calm down…

I really hope NOA does a poll of there own. I still want pig Ganon! And, as I posted in the E3 thread, since Uematsu is the one who did the main theme for this game, it's not totally out of the question to see someone like Cloud.

Very exciting.
I wonder what these Wii games will cost? Has that been discussed anywhere yet?

There's been some minor discussion about it in the E3 thread. I'm guessing Nintendo will stick to the $40-50 range.

Well, to be fair, the addition of Zelda/Sheik kinda pales in comparison to Sonic by quite a bit. I mean, people have been arguing whether Sonic or Mario is better for the last 15 years. All Nintendo has to do is breath the words "Mario vs. Sonic" and they'd have 10 million copies sold, even if it's a carwashing sim.
So I'd have to say that Nintendo doesn't need to ask its fans what they want for them to know people want Mario vs. Sonic. That's a given. And I think if Nintendo had a deal worked out with Sega over the use of Sonic in this game, like I said, they wouldn't have kept it a secret.
When they added Zelda, that was their decision. Nintendo owns Zelda. Nintendo can't just "decide" to use Sonic. Sega has to let them use Sonic.
It's POSSIBLE that they'll work out a deal with Sega before SSBB is released and then get Sonic coded for the game, but they've already had years to work out a deal like that. I wouldn't bet money on that getting done in the next six months or so.

Judging by what Miyamoto said, though, it's possible Nintendo is in discussions with Sega right now. It could be that they're holding off announcing this 'til the end of E3, kind of as a final bomb to drop. This way they have a kind of trump card in case Sony or Microsoft announce some big surprise.
Or, if they don't announce anything at E3, maybe there'll be a Spaceworld this year. Nintendo has to announce the price and release date of the Wii sometime.
Darren870
05-11-2006, 02:59 PM
But that could be the next surprise. I mean SSBB was a total surprise at E3, they didn't even mention it at there press conference.
Could be over the summer or during xmas, whenever a few months before release comes, when we see the Sonic vs Mario headlines.
This way it stays fresh in peoples minds and the next day people go pre-order it. Whats the point of saying something as big as that when the game isn't coming out for 8-20 months, based on a 2007 release date.

My Nominations.
Sega = Sonic, Alex Kidd
Capcom = Mega Man, Any character from Pocket Fighter
Tatio = Bub or Bob, The Kiwi from Newzeland Story
Konami Snake (confirmed), Simon Belmont.
Also, if they managed to have Simon and Mega Man, and they already have Pit, then they should add Captain N for fun. Also, it would be cool if there was a Tag or team mode.

Simon's already been in at least two tournament fighting games (Battle Tryst, and the Hudson/Konami SSBM-alike), but neither game was available to gamers outside of Japan. How sad is that?

Yeah.
You're right.
The central or integral part; the vital core, defined as the soul, never existed in Super Smash Bros. It was never, ever some surreal meeting of strictly Nintendo characters, All Stars, in order for them to duke it out for a while.
It was just code. That's all it was. I was wrong to appreciate it as a collection of characters, stages, music, and idiosyncrasies from the Nintendo Universe. In fact, I should never appreciate any videogame ever again as more than a vast pool of strings of code.

Im indifferent about snake. I don't mind it, but he probably wont be my character of choice.
I don't see the big fuss some are making over him being in the game.
I mean, come'on out of the 5 games he stars in:
3 are on nintendo consoles
2 are on sony consoles
1 is on a microsoft console.
and he started on the nes, so he isn't as far out there as lets say masterchief would be.
Don't forget masterchief was in DOA 4 and no one really complained there and he fit in well to.

Metal Gear first appeared on the MSX computer. It was then ported to the NES as an inferior version to the original. The original MSX versions were then emulated on the Playstation 2 inside Metal Gear Solid 3 itself.
3 are on Nintendo consoles? Let's see, you got -
Metal Gear - An inferior port.
Snake's Revenge - Made without the involvement of Hideo Kojima and made strictly for American and European markets. It is not even canon with reguards to the main Metal Gear storyline.
Twin Snakes - A remake of the original solid which appeared on Playstation.
So, pretty much, two official titles, one an inferior port and one a remake. Right, Nintendo consoles have had one major Metal Gear game, a remake, released on one of their systems in the last 15 years. It now makes perfect sense as to why they would have Snake as a character in the new Smash Bros game. PERFECT sense.
The reason no one really complained about Master Chief (actually, a seperate Spartan soldier, not Master Chief at all, but a character named Nicole) in Dead or Alive 4 or even extra characters in Soul Calibur 2 was that these games were NOT representations of each companies created universe, respectively. Smash Bros is different in the respect that it's a collection of everything Nintendo. Stages, music, characters, ALL Nintendo. Suddenly throwing Snake into this mix just makes it a surreal collection of Nintendo characters... with a guy named Snake thrown in. It just doesn't work out, and, as I've said before, it kills the soul of the series.

Wow, "destroyed the soul" of the series? Well, expect there to be a lot more non-Nintendo characters. SSB has always been about just a shit ton of IP whoring across all generations, now it's about IP whoring across more than just Nintendo.
It didn't have a "soul" in the first place.

C'mon man, it's not about you or me. It's about Wii.
Seriously, though, how can this not be seen as a good sign? This is Nintendo seriously reaching out to a major 3rd party, one that hasn't shown much Nintendo support in some time. And keep in mind that Kojima practically begged to have Snake included. He actually wanted Snake in Melee.
Even if a couple non-Nintendo characters are included in the game, it's still a game that's chiefly about the Nintendo experience. That these other companies want their characters involved just shows how cool it is.

So I could go out on a limb and assume that you hated Pac-Man in Mario Kart Arcade? Nor were you a fan of Conker in Diddy Kong Racing? Didn't like Mario in Pac-Man Vs. either?
You all seem to have forgotten about the fantastic Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel on the Game Boy Color. And the original Metal Gear, though inferior to the MSX version, is still the one most US gamers would be familar with, and is definitely a well remembered title for the NES.
You trying to say that Smash Bros being completely different from Dead or Alive or Soul Calibur in "created universe" is also full of bullshit. DoA uses more than the DOA universe-remember Ryu Hayabusa? Soul Calibur uses Yoshimitsu, from Tekken. That counts as being spread out across more than one IP, and yet I bet you thought it was cool when Link was in Soul Calibur, or Nicole was in Dead Or Alive. The only difference is that this is a percieved concession on Nintendo's part, when it's really not.
If you don't like Snake in the game, then make a stupid house rule that no one can use him.

The soul of the franchise is taking famous video game characters and duking it out with three of your friends in completely non-serious, non-canonical, senseless fun.
Putting SSBB together with Snake neither demeans the Smash Brothers series, nor does it demean Snake. Give me a break.
If anyone is insulted over Super Smash Brothers Brawl, then don't buy it, and let the rest of us have a blast.

I wasn't interested in this at all... until i saw the trailer. Wow! Looks great and reminds me how much fun the N64 game was. Snake is an awesome addition. Loving the Uematsu music, i love that classical style of music underneath crazy action. It would be awesome to add Sonic but then i'd want Tails etc and i wouldn't want this to turn into a Sonic game, the ability to go SuperSonic would be cool though.
As for other characters, well, I doubt it but whoever mentioned Bomberman, thats a winner right there, Pac-Man would be good also. I don't think they should overdo it on non-Nintendo characters but a few, maybe a max of 5 would be awesome. A kind of "greatest hits" of other characters

I'm extremely excited about this. I downloaded the trailer yesterday, and I've watched it at least 10 times until now (the music is awesome!). I know Uematsu wrote the music for the trailer, but is there any hinting on whether he is writing the music for the game itself?
Anyway, the addition of Snake is unexpected, but definitely welcome. I was pleasantly surprised to see old Pit there as well! It would definitely be nice to see some other classic characters join in on the Smash mayhem.
Some characters I would like to see:
Arthur (Ghouls and Ghosts - and maybe throw in Firebrand as well while they're at it ;))
Simon Belmont (Castlevania)
Kefka (Final Fantasy 6 ) :D
Chrono and Magus (Chrono Trigger)
Replace Young Link with Cel-shaded Link (Zelda)

Yes!
For what it's worth, I doubt they'll go crazy with the external licensing. Snake made it because Kojima wanted it bad enough to go to Nintendo himself to make it happen. As companies, Konami, Capcom, and Sega probably aren't making the same moves.
And this is probably for the best. While adding characters like Cloud, Arthur, Ryu, the Belmonts and the like would certainly be welcome fan service, it may become too weighty unless Nintendo just says, screw it, and blossoms the roster to like 40 fighters.
But it would be logical to bring in Sega's big franchise (Sonic) into the fold for the sake of fan service, if nothing else. He'd also fit quite well in the games look and feel.
Ultimately, if you were to ask any SSB:M players what character they'd most like to add to the series, from any source, Sonic will come in number #1 (since Nintendo is doing their write-in campaign, we may just find out if that's true or not) so it would make sense for Nintendo to go out and recruit/license that IP for the game. I don't know if the same can be said for the other IPs mentioned here.
EDIT: Another point is Nintendo is in bed with Sega and Hudson pretty deep over the Virtual Console thing. Maybe Bomberman or Bonk could also reasonably be added to the game as well? Perhaps Hudson is even pushing for this to get their IPs back on the map to revitalize franchises?

The way I see things, Nintendo's been working on partnerships like this for years. From Capcom's help with the Zelda oracles games, to Namco's work on Mario Kart Arcade, to Hudson's work on the Mario Party games, and you could maybe even go so far as to mention all the EA games that Mario and co. have been showing up in. And, hey, let's not forget Konami's work on Mario DDR. My co-worker and I were talking about this last week, and actually mentioned Snake as being a possibility for the game. I feel like Nintendo's been gunning for cross-overs like this for such a long time, and now that they're friends with everyone, it's going to give them the advantage that they've been lacking for years. It's easy to sell a game based on ONE recognizable franchise...But imagine how much easier it is to sell to the fans of MANY recognizable franchises.
I don't think Sonic is much of a stretch, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a huge roster, like that of marvel vs. capcom 2.
It's certainly exciting.

Hideo Kojima requested that Snake appear in Super Smash Brothers Melee.... but that request was kindly denied. So this is more of Nintendo having a hit franchise (have you seen the competitions for SSB:M ?!!?) and others jumping on board. Not that I mean that as Kojima is just trying to get a cut of the pie, as that's not my intent. I believe Kojima is a wonderful video game director that, like the Katamari creator, is stuck due to having such a large creation.
Although Kojima has mentioned that this is his last Metal Gear Solid as top dog. Many rumors place him as saying that he would like to create something new for a Nintendo console. Here's a salute to all the dreamers. Kojima, Miyamoto, Wright, Carmack, Molyneaux, and the rest of you sons-a-bitches that make this hobby so entertaining.

I have high hopes for what Snake will bring to the series, namely more third party characters. Let's face it, SSB is less of a fighting game and more a celebration of Nintendo's history. A bunch of third party characters either in this one or the inevitable sequel can easily turn it into a celebration of gaming in general.
Anyone else excited about the "more robust" single player adventure? I know Melee is all about the 4 player free for alls, but I liked trudging through adventure mode. It was nostalgic. I'm looking forward to see what more development time can bring.
Of course, that subtle warning the director gave about the possibly onle supporting one on one fights is not something I'm happy with. Surely they have the time to implement a full online mode properly, but I'd imagine most of us who love the game as much as I do would take a broken free for all over nothing. *crosses fingers*

They should also add the old man with the banjo from the cover of Phalanx. He would be everyone's favorite.
Of course.

I don't think Sonic is much of a stretch, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a huge roster, like that of marvel vs. capcom 2.
Marvel vs Capcom eh?
I guess they could go for Nintendo vs Third-Parties.
Mario, Link, Kirby and Pikachu go up against Sonic, Snake, Pacman and Bomberman. That'll be a crazy franchise game in itself apart from Smash Bros, but somehow, i dont see it happening.

Bring in PC platform characters while you're at it =P Characters from the Warcraft universe would be awesome.
I'd love to play as Grom Hellscream or Arthas =P While that wouldn't happen, that would be amazing =) If they'd kept on with Ghost, maybe Nova could have made an appearance. Nova vs. Samus.. yum

Bringing back Pit should make alot of Kid Icarus fans happy who still long for a sequel, least this is a start.
Snake being in this should bring more kinds of surprises.

I like how including Snake has sparked even more OMG I WANT THIS GUY IN SMASH crap. As soon as a Konami character shows up, everyone thinks Capcom's on board.
How about we wait until there's more info?
Poorly typed messages make my head hurt.

The best part of the trailer was Mario's face when he was in Kirby's cooking pot.
I thought Mario was behind the cooking pot, and what were seeing was a tag-team attack. In any case, the pose was great.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Nintendo and Miyamoto involved in the GC version of Metal Gear Solid? That's why we're seeing Snake in this game. By that train of thought, it's possible we'd see Pac-Man as a character, but that's probably a bit of a stretch. What could Pac-Man do, besides bite you and kwetch about the "good old days"?
Sonic, of course, would be an excellent choice, but is that realistic? Probably not. I'll just cross my fingers and hope that Wii Sonic turns out to be good (the videos I saw were promising, but choppy).
I don't know what other Nintendo characters could make an appearance, besides the existing ones. R.O.B., perhaps?
God I hope Olmar is in the game that would rock.
Doesn't have to be though I'm already excited about Wario in there, my one of my fav charictors.

I like how nobody was bitchin when Link was in Soul Caliber, but now Snake's in Smash and its a big problem (with some people). :/ C'mon guys. Its not like they're adding some punk ass, undeserving character. Its the legendary Solid Snake. I'm sure they will figure out a way to make him work. Have faith.
If this game can have Mario vs. Sonic, I will actually buy a Wii. If it doesn't, I probably won't, simply because they named it Wii.

That is the dumbest thing I have heard in a long time, and I have been around since the EZboard days...

IGN updated their article. Specifically questions Sonic's possibility for being in the game and announces that Nintendo intends for Brawl to have online play!

LOL That's beautiful.
Oh that poor kid... =) I wonder if he's ever seen any of the spoofs online, or if he's ever seen the video from home. =D

From 1up via digg.com
Sakurai announced Bowser Jr., the "Celda" version of Link, and Ridely, the archenemies of Samus, would all be joining the cast of characters for the Wii release. Three current characters that will not be returning: The Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, and Young Link. Sakurai stated he wants a roster 40 deep, with 1-2 more non-Nintendo characters.
Boo! No Mr. Game and Watch! Probably my favorite character from SSB:M.
Yes! Ridely! I was going to make that bold predection earlier. Too bad I didn't.
Double Yes! Windwaker Link is replacing young link! Perfect!
And 1 or 2 more non-Nintendo characters? Hum. Telling you, Sonic is a lock and fans will go wild.
So 40 fighters huh?
Confirmed are:
Wario
Metaknight
Pit
Zero Suit Samus
Mario
Link
Pikachu
Samus
Kirby
Ridely
Windwaker Link
Bowser Jr.
Solid Snake
That leaves 27 more fighters. Even with the rest of the Melee roster make it in:
Ness, Fox, Falco, Captain Falcon, Ganondorf, Roy, Marth, Mewtwo, Pichu, Jigglypuff, Peach, Zelda, Luigi, Dr. Mario, Yoshi, Bowser, and Donkey Kong.
That still leaves 10 more slots.
