Hey Joe, I'd love to hear about some of the "lamest" trades people have brought in, as well. Something along the lines of a person trying to bring in a pile of game mags their cat peed on, or someone swaggering in with a bag filled with 16-bit sports titles, and a huge smile, as they think about the insane amounts of cash they're supposedly going to get in exchange.

Hmm interesting concept. But possibly not a great business move to post stories that might discourage people from bringing in trade material, or might be seen to be mocking potential store users or intimating that they are ignorant.

He already has that video of the kids trying to sell trashed games and getting 50 cents each or something.

Yeah, I can understand that. But the thing is, Joe already makes fun of a few people coming in and shares stories. Granted, they're the more extreme instances. *shrug* His call.

I not sure if this has been asked. If a trade you received is something someone here would want can we buy at store prices and have them shipped?

PS2 Shadow of Destiny (complete) - yes, Gamestop has this one listed at $4.99 which is a great deal. It's really really old but a good game that we don't see nearly as often as $4.99 suggests.

Joe, you just went up a few notches in my book with this comment. Shadow of Destiny is one of the better PS2 games, in my opinion, and it gets no respect. The PC port isn't half bad either. The story is great, and isn't as spoon-fed as most of the stuff we see in the gaming industry.

Nothing great today but scored a few nice items at yesterday's NAVA.

Nintendo Wii System, LOADED (complete) - owned by a forum member who clearly loved his system. Loaded with virtual console games and first-party titles completely unlocked (most notably all of the Smash Bros Brawl characters), this Wii replaced our store Wii immediately and our store Wii, which was already pretty loaded itself, was later sold to another forum member. It's all in the family around here.

SNES Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (loose) - I think this is only the second time we've had this traded in to the store. Nice.

Genesis Contra Hard Corps (complete) - Always in demand.

PS2 Document of Metal Gear Solid (complete) - One of the titles from my personal collection that I shouldn't have given up when I opened the store, this is the first time it has been traded in since and came back home with me.

XBox 360 Ninja Gaiden 2 (complete) - First time traded in, the game is about two weeks old - that's actually kinda a long time to go without seeing a game traded in.

Laseractive System with Genesis Module (loose) - Actually donated, not traded-in. The disc system doesn't work but the Genesis module does. I believe I have a Laseractive with no modules so I may extract this one and sell the other a bit more "complete".

Um... if you read back a sentence or two you'll see it was donated and that it doesn't exactly work.

Oh summer, you are HERE. Literally bajillions of things traded in today, I'll filter it out a bit.

SNES Earthbound (loose) - It's been awhile.

SNES Lot (loose) - of which the above more prominent title was a part, this lot included Super Punch-Out!! (which I swear is the least-traded-in first party game I've ever seen), Super Metroid, Turtles IV, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, and more.

PS1 Einhander (complete) - This Squaresoft shooter never lasts on our shelves more than a few days.

NES Bible Lot (loose) - Includes King of Kings, Exodus, and Bible Adventures. Interesting, but also part of a larger lot, which included some more really good games. All the Super Marios, Contra, Bubble Bobble, and a dozen or so others.

Nintendo DS Nintendogs Best Friends Edition (complete) - This game came with the old style Blue DS, and was traded in with the outer envelope and manual. Just no DS.

GameCube Legend of Zelda Master Quest (complete) - We've gotten quite a few of the Collector's Edition (gray) since I started this thread, but this might be the first time I've seen this one (gold) this year.

N64 Resident Evil 2 (complete) - Yeah, this was a fire sale item at Toys R Us a few years ago and I bought tons of them, but I wish I had more THESE days.

I must have missed that. Einhander is one that I rarely see in the wild. I saw it once, bought it, and never saw it again. I see you still have a steady flow of SNES stuff coming in.

Missed a couple of minor ones from yesterday.

Final Fantasy VII (complete) - Black label version. Immediately scooped up by one of our staff.

NES Collection (loose) - A tidy assortment of about 30 games, including the ones we're always looking for: Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Super Mario Bros (all three), Kid Icarus, Castlevania, and a few interesting titles peppered in there, like Wrecking Crew.

Quick catch-up from yesterday.

PS1 Vagrant Story (complete) - I think this is the third one traded in since I started this thread. I thought it was a little more uncommon than it has been, at least in this neck of the woods.

PS1 Star Ocean (complete) - TWO PS1 RPG's in one day? Wait...

PS1 Xenogears (missing manual) - Three! Well, two and a half. It sucks when the manuals are missing but at least everything else is in great shape.

PS1 Star Ocean is one of the best. Highly under rated JRPG that most RPG fans haven't even played.

Typical frantic Saturday, loads and loads of trade-ins, mostly common stuff (not that there's anything wrong with that). One interesting note is that today was very Nintendo-heavy. This includes but was not limited to:

N64 Zelda Ocarina of Time (loose)
N64 Zelda Majora's Mask (loose)
N64 Super Smash Bros (loose)
SNES Zelda Link To The Past (loose)
SNES Turtles IV (loose)
SNES Super Mario Kart (loose)
SNES Pieces (complete) - ooh... haven't seen this one in awhile.
SNES Adventures of Yogi Bear (complete) - and I've never seen this one EVER.
SNES Donkey Kong Country (complete)
SNES Donkey Kong Country 2 (complete)
SNES Magical Quest featuring Mickey Mouse (complete) - cool.
GameCube Pikmin (complete)
GameCube Super Smash Bros Melee (complete)
GameCube Bloody Roar (complete)

... lots more. Long day, need sleep.

LucidDefender

I'd say thats a damn good Saturday, resale wise. All the stuff people snatch up the moment it's in the store...

I bet you don't see Pikmin come in too often; it seems like it has a cult following nowadays.

You know the way Sundays are: wild card days. Sometimes really nothing (it's just a five hour day after all), sometimes really interesting (it's a weekend day, after all). So, today.

NES Aladdin Set (various) - I'm guessing this was from the poster above. Interesting set of Aladdin stuff included the Aladdin "enhancer" itself (loose) with a loose Dizzy cart, plus an open boxed Micro Machines, as well as some sealed boxed games Dizzy (again), Quattro Adventure, Quattro Sports, and Linus Spacehead.

PS2 BUZZ: The Mega Quiz Bundle (complete) - I've never heard of or seen this before. According to Raj, this is like the Scene It game for 360.

PS3 Metal Gear Solid IV (complete) - Here they come...

I do wonder why people do that. Why buy a game and then trade it in a week or so later when rentals would be so much cheaper? The only explanation I can fathom is that they buy the game expecting to like it and then find out it's not their cup of tea so they try to minimize the damage to their wallets.

Hands up, who's surprised that I've managed to keep this up into July? Well, my hand is up. Truth is, this has been a fun documentation project and will most certainly be part of a future writing project. I totally don't expect to continue this through next year, so enjoy it while it lasts :)

Today.

Big SYSTEM trade-in day, which makes for a pretty unexciting post. A PSP, a 360, several PS2's, just nothing that pops out on that front. Some games that came along with the stuff today:

PS1 Vagrant Story (almost complete) - AGAIN?! Yes, this fairly sought-after game was traded in yet again. Sadly, missing the bonus sampler disc (not even sure if most people would notice that) but otherwise complete.

PS1 Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 (complete) - Cant' get enough of these.

PC LucasArts Lot (loose) - They're loose but what a strange trade-in, that contained many of the games we've all been emulating on SCUMM, including Escape from Monkey Isle and Curse of Monkey Isle. Grim Fandango was in that lot too.

I was just wondering, how do the trade-ins/selling work for the store, is one supposed to give an offer to sell an item or is there a specific way of finding out what an item is worth?

For buying: You walk in the store, look at the price tag, take out your wallet, do some math, and then either take the game to the register or put it back on the shelf.

For selling: You take your items to the counter, Joe/whoever does some math, you get money/credit (not sure how this works) and then continue to the "For buying" section.

Simple, no?

I love the side conversations LOL

A little bit of yesterday and today.

PS1 Final Fantasy VII (complete) - Black label version, and SURE you've seen it here a lot of times since the thread started but quite frankly, if I could tailor the business a little bit, it would be YE OLDE FINAL FANTASY SEVEN SHOPPE. "All Final Fantasy 7, All Day!". If it were in any way possible to make this happen - a store where all I had to sell was Final Fantasy VII, I'm quite sure I'd make a killing. Oh well, back to reality.

Sega 32X System (loose) - My guys don't seem to understand that these things have to be TESTED, so until tomorrow this seems to be an "as is" system. OK, we got it for $3 so maybe for the wires alone it's worth it, but if you're going to PM me, keep in mind that tomorrow's crew will hold the answers as to whether it works or not.

Genesis Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (complete) - Surprised to see this here? It's a cult classic. Look for it anywhere, you'll see what I mean.

Genesis Star Control (complete) - Awesome game. Not as awesome as it's sequel, but what a great Genesis game.

Sega CD Soul Star (complete) - Listed here because I haven't seen it in a long time, not because it's particularly good OR rare.

Sega CD Mary Shelley's Frankenstein/Brahm Stoker's Dracula (complete) - See above.

In my opinion, any game I only see once every few months is "special", regardless of whether or not it's actually rare, because that means my customers probably haven't seen it either. All I've ever wanted my store to be is a place where you'd find stuff you wouldn't ordinarily see.

Kinda boring day for trade-ins...

PlayStation Final Fantasy VII (complete) - The greatest hits version. You know, we just got one of these two days ago and it's already gone. As I said then, if I could only open a FFVII shop...

Nintendo Wii System (loose) - Everything but the box, good condition, a few decent virtual console games. Good timing as we sold our last used Wii yesterday.

Quick note from yesterday.

SNES Complete Game Lot - First trade-in of the day included a dozen or so boxed, complete games. A few titles stood out, like Contra III and Lemmings. There were some other interesting ones in there, Ultraman and Street Fighter II. A few of the boxes had some kind of moisture damage. I challenged Maryah to open an instruction manual from NCAA Basketball. She ended up cracking it in half.

Today was one of those "wow" days. A random Monday, lots of really cool stuff. Let's recap:

NES Complete Game Lot - It's weird. We don't get boxed NES games in all that often, and now we've had them two days in a row (hoping for three, four, forty-four...), and two different sellers. Today's lot was pretty nice. The best of the lot was Tengen Tetris and Mega Man 2, but the lot also included Paperboy, Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario Bros 3, Where's Waldo, Remote Control, A Boy and His Blob, Adventure Island, Barbie, The Little Mermaid, Adventures of Lolo, Videomation, Dr. Mario, and Yoshi.

N64 Diddy Kong Racing (complete) - Just nice because it IS complete.

N64 Banjo Kazooie (complete) - As above.

NES Contra (loose)
NES Castlevania (loose)
NES Shadowgate (loose) - A few "staples" back in stock.

N64 System (complete) - Complete and collector-quality, in box, same with the next few boxed systems listed below.

NES Action Set System (complete)
Atari 2600 System (complete)
Genesis II System (complete)

PS1 Resident Evil: Survivor (complete) - Everyone in my area loves Resident Evil games. I'd be almost as happy opening a Resident Evil Shoppe as I would a Final Fantasy VII Shoppe.

PS2 Silent Hill 2 (missing book) - Grr.

DigitalSpace

Caveman games is an awesome game. I never really hear about it much though.

I recently acquired it cart only for $2.50. It's only an R3 (http://www.digitpress.com/DP/cmf/game.cmf?gameid=6103) but it is a game I don't see too often. I discovered it a few years ago through some friends who had owned and played it back in the day. It's an excellent multiplayer game when you're playing with people who know the controls.

OK, there's a lot to get through today so let's get right to it.

Dreamcast Shenmue II (complete) - Certainly in "collector" condition, with the outer box that houses the two Euro-style jewel cases intact, looks as though it's barely been touched.

PS2 Firefighter FD18 (complete) - First time this game has been traded into the store. It's kind of a rarity but not as crazy rare as I first thought.

XBox Ultra Bust-A-Move (complete) - I haven't seen this one in a long time.

XBox King of Fighters Maniax (complete) - This is that 3D version of KoF, and another one I haven't seen in awhile. A welcome addition to our rabid fighting game fan customer base.

SNES Super Mario RPG (loose) - Nice.

PS1 Time Crisis (complete) - Complete with GunCon in oversized box.

PS1 Point Blank (complete) - See above.

GameCube Robotech Battlecry Collector's Edition (complete) - This is in an oversized silver box with the DVD case showing through the front window. Besides the game, the set also includes a music soundtrack, lenticular art cell, original concept art book, dog tab, and t-shirt.

Saturn Import Lot (various) - Mostly complete though there are one or two that need a RAM cart and don't have one. Metal Slug comes complete with the cart, and the lot also included Real Bout Fatal Fury, Nitoshinden, Toshindesubaru, and a few other interesting titles.

PS1 Lot (complete) - A hodgepodge of about 30 PS1 titles and best of all, nothing super-common. I'm getting sick of looking at Tony Hawk and Tomb Raider games. Instead, we've got Adventures of Lomax, Guilty Gear, Herc's Adventures, Tobal 2 (import), Psychic Force and lots of other goodies.

GameCube Lot (complete) - A smaller pile of GameCube games but similar quality and non-common-ness as the PS2 lot above. Both Pikmin's and all of the Resident Evil games highlighted this stack.

SNES Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (loose) - Nice.

SNES Metal Warriors (loose) - You might not recognize the title or think it's worth anything but it's a good game and it's worth something.

Nintendo Wii System (loose) - Yup, AGAIN. In good condition, we've got three used ones in stock at the moment.

Atari Lynx System (loose) - We haven't had one traded in here in awhile. This one has that nice Lynx case, too, and it's in mint condition.

NES Metal Gear (complete) - In yet another lot of boxed NES games (weird, really, this is the third lot in four days) most of the stuff was pretty pedestrian. Metal Gear stands out among them though it's nice stocking the shelves even with fringe stuff, honestly.

XBox 360 Rock Band (complete) - Complete in box, "collector quality". Takes up an awful lot of space but nice to have in the store, much like Steel Battalion.

Catching up from yesterday, it was a weird Saturday. With temperatures nearing 100 degrees (only 95 in our "air-conditioned" store!) we didn't see many of our usual Saturday regulars. Traffic in general was light, as were trade-ins though sales were quite good. Among some pretty general stuff (the usual 360 and PS3 games, some boxed but common Genesis titles, other odds and non-eye-catching ends)...

SNES Chrono Trigger (complete) - Yup, another one. This one's box wasn't so hot, with noticeable wear along many of the edges. It wasn't crushed though, and the contents inside were in great shape. We didn't even get this back on the shelf before another customer spotted it and bought it. It's always fun to see capitalism at work like that.

Just curious about something... how do you put a price on something like this. I mean literally, do you use price stickers in the store? For boxes do you put them in baggies, or are the stickers such that they won't tear the box?

NES Metal Gear (complete) - In yet another lot of boxed NES games (weird, really, this is the third lot in four days) most of the stuff was pretty pedestrian. Metal Gear stands out among them though it's nice stocking the shelves even with fringe stuff, honestly.

XBox 360 Rock Band (complete) - Complete in box, "collector quality". Takes up an awful lot of space but nice to have in the store, much like Steel Battalion.

Damn. I wish I lived in Jersey. I want that copy of Metal Gear:(

Just curious about something... how do you put a price on something like this. I mean literally, do you use price stickers in the store? For boxes do you put them in baggies, or are the stickers such that they won't tear the box?

Games that we put in the case (collectibles but generally anything worth 30 bucks or more) have a price sticker not stuck but rather loosely taped to the box so they're easy to remove without causing any additional wear or damage to the box. Of course in this latest case, there was never a price sticker put on. It was sitting on the island counter, spotted by a customer and promptly sold.

Everything else has a price sticker stuck directly on the box or case. We do offer to heat gun the stickers off if there's any concern of damage - we're quite good at removing our stickers without leaving a trace.

Sunday, bloody Sunday.

Atari Jaguar System (complete) - Complete in box, in pristine condition. A few games came along with it but nothing we didn't already have out on the shelves.

Goldstar 3DO System (loose) - The red-headed stepchild of the 3DO family, though we sell 3DO's today better than I bet many retailers did in 1995. Also came with an assortment of games, the only notable one...

3DO Theme Park (complete) - Kinda unusual trade-in. This version of the game was my favorite, by the way. I've logged many many hours into it.

XBox 360 NCAA College Football 09 (complete) - Ha! The game was just released on Tuesday! Oh GOD how I hate sports games these days.

At least you'll be able to resell that NCAA 09 for whatever price you sell it for. I wonder why someone would trade a SPORTS game in so quickly. That game has unlimited replay value for me, with the super long dynasty mode and ONLINE PLAY. Oh well.

I've heard that that NCAA 09 was riddled with bugs. Also heard it was rushed out to meet the yearly release cycle. I don't see how it could be that borked since there's minimal changes to the game every year aside from updating the rosters.

I've been enjoying this thread all year now. I do wish it was stickied at the top though. :)

A rushed EA Sports game? Say it isn't so!

Having picked up a large amount of games from the DP store, I can say that the price stickers are easy to remove for a collector. :)

Any price sticker will come off with no problem provided it was applied fairly recently. You only get the residue or tearing when the adhesive starts to solidify. So if the merchandise is moving there shouldn't be much of a problem. It's those times you buy something that was sitting on the shelf for a year or two that are trouble.

Even then, with some lighter fluid or Goo Gone, they should come off without damaging the game. Heat guns also work great.

Those were bad but how about those silver rental stickers? When they put 'em right on the label, there was no way to get 'em off.

Those were bad but how about those "whole cartridge/disk" labels that Blockbuster put on N64 and PS1 games. Or more recently, the bajillion stickers that Gamestop puts on the game cases, including the ever-difficult "inside the DVD case/on the original artwork sleeve/on the spine" combo?

At the gamestop near me they leave the back of of the sticker on. I have only had 1 that was on the actual insert.

You're lucky. The many trade-ins I get of recent Gamestop titles have a sticker on the front, a sticker on the back, and a sticker on the spine INSIDE of the outer sleeve. I have quite a few Gamestop employee customers, several of which have told me that this is to speed up the inventory process, as they can run the scanner along the shelves and pick up the barcode without having to take the games off the shelf.

Huzzah for laziness.

Whenever my buddy and I see stickers on the insert like that, we complain directly to the manager of that store. Solved the problem right quick at one location.

That *really* irks me. If you MUST put a spine sticker on a game, put it on the case, not the insert!

I'd rather peel off 100,000 Gamestop spine stickers than deal with these. My Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness still has the damn thing on it because clearly it's impossible to take off without the cartridge label coming with it. I got lucky and was able to peel off the ones on the Star Ocean: The Second Story discs I bought from them though.

Monday.

3DO System (loose) - Another one, but welcome as stated a day or two ago. This is a Panasonic FZ-1, fine condition. Traded in with a bunch of complete games, including Jurassic Park, VR Stalker and my favorite, Way of the Warrior.

Sega CD Lunar (loose) - Discs only. WTF.

PS1 Street Fighter EX@ (complete) - Huzzah for 3D Street Fighter! Well, maybe not, but there are some people that actually ASK for this game.

Strategy Guide: Dragon Warrior 7 - Don't know if anyone really cares but it seems kinda cool, and it's not something we see every day, so here it is, logged into our little one year log.

I didn't realized that Dragon warrior 7 had a guide. Nice! PSX guides are really collectible for some reason on the other.

Another reason why I shouldn't buy from Gamestop in NJ. It was disheartening seeing all the games I want butchered with those ridiculous spine stickers, besides the constant repetitive sticker removal. :frustrated:

Fortunately, the Gamestop in Delaware don't give me that problem as the spine stickers is on the outsides (but I still have to remove a 1,000,000 stickers from all hauls I purchase from all their sales). Guess the source trouble lies with regional management.

The sticker on the insert under the plastic is a problem in my region too. I told my manager and district manager straight up that I refused to purchase used games from any of our stores because of the practice. Even when I was notified that the practice went into effect, I either refused to do trade-ins (not outright, there's ways around it). If I did get stuck doing trade-ins, I wouldn't create stickers for the spines or would continue to spine-sticker on the outside on the plastic.

Luckily my store has dropped the practice and we are doing it the way I've been doing it, spine-sticker on the outside plastic. If done correctly and not sloppy like some employees are known for, the sticker stays in place like it's supposed to and won't come off unless purposely peeled off. While it's nice that my store has dropped the annoying practice, the same cannot be said of other locations in the area. What kills me is how many employees don't see a problem with this practice. Additionally, what's ironic about this is when Gamestop acquired EB a few years back, the edict from the PTB was that there would only be 2 stickers on cases, the price on the front and ID on the back. Didn't take very long to reverse that train of thought.
