I thought Z was the cool guy with the crazy handshake.
No, that's "X". Get with the program :)
And then there's "Y", with all the crazy questions.
"Z"... no idea. Never met him/her.

OK I'm still learning who the new members are... who is "Z" again?
She's the host of Little Miss Gamer (http://www.pbc-productions.com/littlemissgamer/index.html), on YouTube. She's reviewed Gitaroo Man, and is a big fan of the game.

Let me clear up this confusion.
X seems nice enough but I think he needs to visit a doctor more than a video game store.

Um... OK.
Back on topic, a pretty light trade-in day. One notable:
XBox 360 Viking (complete) - first time traded in. Expect to see me online with this and previously mentioned Condemned 2 on Wednesday, my day off :) !
Viking is a great game, one of the best that I've played in quite a while. I don't get the low reviews it's received from the press.

And onto Sunday...
SNES Collection (mostly loose) - We've been pretty shorthanded on this system of late. Nice trade-ins today to help that, including a few Super Mario Worlds, A Super Mario All-Stars, and others.
Factory Sealed Games (um, new) - Traded in by a sealed games collector, also a member of this forum. Included Stella Deus PS2, Galaxy Force 2 PS2 (import), and Gitaroo Man PSP.
That would be me. Too bad I missed you Joe!

Catching up a bit, this was over the last two days, nothing terribly memorable.
Nintendo DS Mario Party DS (complete) - first time traded in.
PS2 SNK vs Capcom 2 (complete) - I'll take ANY fighting game. This might be the first time this was traded in for the PS2. I've seen it on GameCube a few times and on Xbox once or twice.
Nintendo DS Crimson & Black (loose) - nice condition.
Genesis Phantasy Star III (loose)

Were the games graded? I can't image how you'd price the trade-in otherwise.
What are you talking about? There is nothing to grade here. These are common recent gen games that are available from many websites and are very easy to get values for, which is how DP valued them.

Wonder if that got traded in because the game was just released for the Wii Virtual Console this week.
I'll take ANY fighting game.
Believe me, you don't want the 16-bit classics like Ballz and the infamous Shaq-Fu. Okay, you do, because every gamer has a time when they want to laugh at the crappiest and corniest fighters out there.

I'm curious, what's the most valuable thing that's ever been traded in? Also, what item has the least trade in value? Do you give something like 5 cents store credit for an insanely common Genesis sports game? :P

Why all the hate on Ballz? There are so many generic Street Fighter clones that got released that are a lot worse, at least Ballz tried something new.

Arg, on a mildly related note there's this great kid that used to be on YT of a bunch of kids trading in a bunch of damaged, loose sports games for like $4 credit and they look all disappointed but it got taken down. Anyone know what I'm speaking of?
I know what you mean. I'm pretty sure this is what happened. The DIGIT PRESS account got banned or something like that on youtube. They created another account but I'm not sure what the user name is. The video is up again under that name though.
The video mentioned is actually quite funny. They were probably trading in PS2 sports games or soemthing and looked really really disappointed that they only got four bucks. Priceless.

Today was absolutely nuts on trade-ins. For every customer buying something it seemed there were two just selling. Check this out, this is just one day, and from many different customers, not just one guy dumping his collection.
Systems:
1 XBox
2 Atari 2600 Systems
3 N64 Systems (1 Green)
2 Genesis Systems (1 Boxed)
2 NES Systems
1 GameCube (Pokemon)
1 PS2 Slim
Games (highlights):
2 N64 Smash Bros
2 NES Tyson
1 NES Super C
1 DS Tetris
1 SNES Mega Man X
1 N64 Mario Party 2
1 N64 Mario Kart
... lots more. I just wanted to get this post done so I can go about putting stuff away. I usually get caught up the day before NAVA but I've already got an island full of work to do before we open up tomorrow.

Lots of stuff traded in at NAVA yesterday.
Genesis Herzog Zwei (boxed) - Don't see this one very often, one of the first real-time strategy games, maybe the first on a console.
PS1 Saga Frontier 2 (complete) - Squaresoft RPG.
PS1 Arc the Lad Strategy Book - I've never seen this before and I'd remember it because it's a full color HARDCOVER book with those fancy ribbon bookmarks. Much bigger than the Lunar book, and very cool indeed. Also traded in with Arc the Lad Collection for PS1
PS1 Lemmings (complete) - Uncommon longbox game.
PS1 Psychic Detective (complete) - Uncommon longbox game.
PS1 Return Fire (boxed) - Uncommon longbox game, missing the manual.
TurboGrafx-16 Collection - The system is boxed and came with five games, pretty common stuff.

Day after NAVA.
SNES Collection - Link to the Past, Illusion of Gaia, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Super Mario World... these are incredibly welcome these days, we've got quite the shortage of SNES titles despite what you see in this thread. They get gobbled up way too fast.
N64 Collection - Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart, GoldenEye, Mario 64... again, might not seem like much to the collector but always welcome in the world I live in. We actually have quite an abundance of N64 games but I've learned there is quite a lot more "fringe" titles on N64 than there is on SNES.

Raj's report on this rainy Monday.
Lots of trade-ins today. Overall we paid out nearly what we took in! That's not necessarily a bad thing as long as the trade-ins are of good (and preferably quickly resold) quality. And they were.
Promo Stuff - We have a few GameStop, EB, GameCrazy types who either donate (friends of the store) or sell extra promo stuff to us. This has been going on for a long long time. Today was a rather timely delivery which included full size floor standees for GTA IV (launches tomorrow) and Ninja Gaiden 2. Lots of other display stuff in there too, but these will be immediately put into good use.
NES Collection (complete) - Among a huge pile of loose games which was mostly good stuff, there were some nice boxed games. Highlights include Baseball Stars 2, Castlevania 3, and Ultima: Exodus.
Genesis Collection (complete) - See above, and from the same guy. Included Splatterhouse 2, Streets of Rage 3, and Phantasy Star III.
GameCube Collection (complete) - Different guy but similar quality and quantity. Highlights included a complete Resident Evil collection (including the elusive RE2 and RE3), Smash Bros Melee, and Mario Tennis.
Raj also mentioned that we took in a bunch of quality PS3 titles and common but popular PS1 games. Good day.

I didn't get to this last night so I'm catching up on yesterday.
GTA IV was released on Tuesday, which meant loads and loads of trade-ins as customers scraped together whatever they could to cushion the financial blow. The good news is that we saw a lot of quality PS3 and 360 games traded in (Call of Duty 4, Ace Combat 6, Ratchet and Clank, etc). Only a few other things were notable and unrelated to the GTA launch.
3DO Collection - a collection of about 15 games. Mostly good titles, a few uncommon ones like Super Street Fighter II, Snow Job, Strahl... everything in great condition.
Genesis Mutant League Hockey (loose) - a tiny entry but such a great game and so very uncommon.

No kidding, Mutant League Football and Hockey are the only Genesis sports games I've spent more than a buck on (I paid $2.50 each, both are well worth the price, imo).
It'd be awesome to see some new Mutant League games (well, as long as they didn't mess them up).
guitargary75
04-30-2008, 06:48 PM
Mutant League Hockey is awesome. I haven't seen a copy of that game in a store in about 4 or 5 years. It has to be pretty rare.
Of all the stuff traded in today, we had a nice pile of Dreamcast stuff.
Dreamcast Skies of Arcadia (complete)
Dreamcast Prince of Persia (complete)
Dreamcast Street Fighter Third Strike (complete)
Dreamcast Mortal Kombat Gold (complete)
Dreamcast Star Wars Jedi Power Battles (complete)
While none of these things probably seems very interesting, remember that I'm doing this thread as a sort of personal diary. At this time in the store, our Dreamcast stock is severely depleted. These games as well as the more common (yet just as welcome) titles like Soul Calibur and Shenmue mark a very TIMELY trade-in.
not intersting?! :(
Skies of Arcadia is amazing! ;p

Still riding the wave of GTA IV but the trade-ins have finally died down. That's good because I might be able to catch up before the weekend when it will probably flare up again. That said, just one nice piece today.
Atari Jaguar System (complete) - complete in box, everything in pristine condition. When I tested it in front of the customer it didn't work. I gave him $10 for the box, controllers, and wires, he left the broken console behind. Later on I tried a different power supply and PRESTO, we're back in business. I'm not sure I've ever seen this guy before but if he turns up again I intend to give him more for the now working system.

Question, how do you determine how many new games to initially stock for games like gta4? Or new games in general.

Question, how do you determine how many new games to initially stock for games like gta4? Or new games in general.
Experience. In general I keep my "new games" stock at a minimum because my local distributor calls and delivers every day. They're awesome.
Normally even for fairly big releases I don't stock more than 8 copies. However, there are exceptions. GTA IV clearly was one of them. I started with 60 copies of 360, 36 for PS3. I have about ten left of each but again, thanks to the daily communications with my distributor, there's no danger of "running out", at least not as of today.
The trick is simply to keep them in stock just until the price drops. Because if the price drops and I still own the game NEW, I've probably LOST money on the sale of that game.

I spoke too soon. The wave of GTA IV, now on its fourth day, has clearlly spiked the trade-ins. We got all manner of things today, though mostly current-gen stuff, I had a few young people trading in pretty old systems (for them). Sega CD and a couple of Genesis systems among them. Good software for 360 highlighted the day's common stuff. As for uncommon:
Nintendo Wii System (complete) - that's complete in box. Go back aways and you'll find that we seem to get these in spurts. That seems to be a pattern because we also got...
Nintendo Wii System (complete) - the second complete in box system had some pretty nice virtual console stuff on it. Hours had gone by but near the end of the night...
Nintendo Wii System (complete) - crazy. I actually had to put a Wii system in the basement as overstock for the first time. This third one had been reset to factory defaults. As I was testing it I asked if he had ever even used it, he told me he was a GameStop employee and this is what they do with the systems they get traded in. I don't usually pry beyond that, a shrug is good enough.
Nintendo DS Lite Systems - These kinda go hand in hand with Wii's, don't they? We got three of these in today as well. A fairly well used white one, a very nice looking crimson/black one, and a collector-quality in box onyx one.
Tomorrow is Saturday, usually the busiest day of the week. It should be interesting to see how tomorrow stacks up to a week that has been simply crazy considering that it's not the summer nor the holiday season. Stay tuned.

Given the (predictable) wave of trade-ins for GTA4, how long before you are likely to get people trading GTA4 in for something? When it comes to immensely popular titles such as this, do you put a limit on how many copies you will take and have in stock at any one moment post initial new buying phase? Does the same principle apply to the yearly sports updates?
Volcanon
05-03-2008, 01:31 AM
I presume for new games that aren't scratched to hell he probably gives somewhere around 40-50% of the new value while the game is hot, because people will buy the 75% retail priced used one unless they are a collector.
That being said, I guess it's another factor to consider when ordering GTA4 - if he's got a lot of used ones, there's less of a need to buy new ones.
I'm safe because I'm purposely an entire generation behind. I just got a PS2 last year. I wont be getting GTA4 for probably 5-6 years.

Given the (predictable) wave of trade-ins for GTA4, how long before you are likely to get people trading GTA4 in for something?
Usually immediately. I got my first GTA IV traded in yesterday. I've got three used copies of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 right now.
When it comes to immensely popular titles such as this, do you put a limit on how many copies you will take and have in stock at any one moment post initial new buying phase?
No limit, I just pay less and less as my used pile builds up. Halo 3, Mass Effect, and Assassin's Creed are good examples of this. I was paying 25-30 for these a week or two into the game's release, then 20 after about 3 weeks, now it's about 15 (and Ass Creed price has dropped so that one's about 10).
Does the same principle apply to the yearly sports updates?
Yes, though the amount I pay drops faster and farther.

Yeah, 90% of the trade-ins do NOT have the customized and/or personal info wiped out. Especially true of PSP where I've seen some rather interesting photos and video. Just before wiping it out, of course.
Today was INSANE with sales, best day of the year so far, but not as big on trade-ins as the rest of the week's pattern had prepared me for. That's good because for a change, Raj on Sunday isn't facing an island full of stuff that needs to be priced. We didn't get too much I'd call interesting...
Genesis Mutant League Football (complete) - Weird, eh? After getting Hockey for the first time in ages, just a few days later Football turns up, this time complete. Love this game, love having it in the store. Not for long, I bet.
GameCube Super Mario Party 6 (complete) - This is the Mario Party that I see the LEAST, FYI. I wouldn't go so far to call it rare, but it's got to be more scarce than 4 which we seem to get all the time, and 5 or 7 which trickle in.
XBox 360 GTA IV (complete) - Though this isn't the first one traded in, it WAS the first one traded in used. That's right, someone traded a factory sealed one in two days ago. Said it was a gift and he had played the game on a friend's system and didn't like it. Today's guy just didn't like it. I don't ask why they don't bring it back to the store where it was purchased because I don't wanna know.

Thursdays. What is it about Thursdays?
Side note to today's trade-ins. They don't make short buses short enough to transport in some of the dummies I get on Thursdays. I don't know why this day is the way it is, but it's fairly consistent. On Thursdays I'm going to have guys who can't find the "sync" button on their 360 controller, people who can't form a complete sentence over the phone and some folks who buy imports marked "IMPORT: YOU NEED A MODIFIED SYSTEM TO PLAY THIS GAME" then return them because they don't have a modified system. Today was just another one of these predictable Thursdays. Despite that, a decent sales day with some interesting trade-ins.
PS1 Silent Hill (complete) - in great shape but the disc is an 8 out of 10 and I'm going to resurface it. I haven't had as many requests for Silent Hill lately as I did say, 6 months ago, but it will be sold by the weekend, rest assured.
PS1 Time Crisis 3 and Time Crisis Crisis Zone (complete) - wow, both games complete in box with the gun AND that elusive crossover video cable. Very nice.
Genesis ToeJam & Earl (complete) - I've got TWO of these in the store as of closing tonight, first time that's ever happened.
N64 Stunt Racer (loose) - Here's a little bit of a rarity for N64. Traded in with a bunch of N64 titles, most of which were fairly common but lots of good titles (Smash Bros, GoldenEye, Yoshi's Story). Pretty sure this is the first time I've had this traded in.
PS1 Parasite Eve with Strategy Guide - ALMOST complete... the game is missing disc one which really sucks. I was hoping it was inside the PS1 system this guy was trading in but nope.
We also took in two PSP's and a 360 today.

I'm a fan of rainy days. This rainy Friday was a fairly average day, just a few good trade-ins.
NES Collection (loose) - there were actually TWO of these today. An older hispanic gentleman was there as soon as I opened the door. His kids have grown up and no longer play Nintendo. They no longer play River City Ransom, Maniac Mansion, 2 Mario 3's and a few other choice titles. Later on, a customer traded in a huge pile of crappy Madden SNES games and a small pile of really great NES games including Dragon Warrior II and Castlevania.
Neo Geo Pocket Color System and Collection (loose) - one of the night's last customers brought in a light blue NGPC handheld system and a stack of games including Dive Alert (which I've never had traded in before), Pac-Man, Metal Slug 1st Mission, Baseball Stars, Samurai Shodown 2 and others.

I can't agree more. I had it as a child and tracked it down again a couple years ago for $25 complete, and don't regret it at all. I can't believe how much I missed the jam out mode. It's like a trapper keeper has come to life and brought gifts of alien hip-hop. The delivery of the big earl voice sample is priceless too.
I'm not really an RPG gamer, although I deeply enjoy most hyphen rpg's, especially Castlevania. Anywho, the real RPG I've spent the most time with is probably Dragon Warrior. Nintendo Power sent it to me for free, like so many in my age range. I think it might have turned me off of RPG's all together. Thou art bored to death. I did enjoy Princess Tomato and Return to Zork (?!) so I guess there might be a sliver of hope. I bought Phantasy Star 3 and Shadowrun for $3 a piece a while ago too, but haven't touched either. San Andreas felt like an RPG to me, but I actually enjoyed the grinding...
funny cause dragon warrior isn't a real rpg either ;p

This is a great thread! I am always very curious about the status of the store business wise and this thread offers good insight on that. I'm personally sorry for accidentally getting into one of those "customers under buying games that another customer is trying to trade in" situations with you at February's NAVA when Chris [don't know his tag yet on the forums] was selling his Gradius 5. I always hate getting into awkward social situations like that even though I always seem to keep getting into them probably due to my idiotic lack of awareness and lack of real world people to talk to on a daily basis besides my mother. If I ever see that Splatterhouse 2 that was traded in floating around in the store one day I have to buy it [probably already sold though I bet].

Yup, already sold, Chris. And at NAVA I bend the rules a lot. I expect people to barter with each other, that's what NAVA is all about. It gets a little weird when the bartering is done right at my register but on this one day a month I consider myself one of the gang, and rules of trade are equal across the board. So, no worries.
Now then, onto yesterday's busy day. One of my customers invited me to a party after the store closed so I couldn't get to this thread, catching up now. A pretty typical Saturday with boatloads of trade-ins. A higher than average quality trade-in day, as well.
SNES Collection (loose) - Two customers literally back-to-back brought in some large boxes. Both had a wide variety of stuff. The first guy went all the way back to Atari 2600. The second guy was more NES and SNES only. The SNES games between the two of them will really help our depleted SNES section. Over 30 cartridges in all, including some really nice ones like Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario World, All of the Mortal Kombats, Yoshi's Island, Contra 3 and more.
NES Collection (loose) - The two guys above, plus an older gentleman who came in just as I opened the door yesterday contributed to about 40 loose NES games which included several copies of all three Super Mario's, all of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games, Mega Man 4 and many more.
PS2 Klonoa 2 (complete) - In "collector" quality. This is what my games at home (and probably many of you here) look like. No dust. No scratches. Checking later it doesn't look like Klonoa 2 is a particularly expensive title but it's the first time I've seen it in the store.
PS2 Itadaki (complete) - A young Asian girl brought in several imports because "you're the only one who takes these". The most interesting to me is Itadaki, which is a Mario Party-style game with characters from Dragon Warrior and other Square Enix games.
PS2 ParaPara Paradise (complete) - Same girl, this is a large pink box with a handle that includes both the game and the controller. Pretty neat.
PS1 Rival Schools 2 (complete) - Don't make me type out the Japanese title, it barely fits on the spine of the CD case! Pretty cool because this game was not released in the US. I'm not sure if it's the same game as Project Justice (Dreamcast) in the US.
Game Boy Color Collection (complete) - That's right, complete. A guy and his son were in earlier in the day to trade in a GBA system. He mentioned that he had some games and I quoted him some prices. He also asked if we pay more if the games are in the box which of course I replied positively. He came back several hours later with two shopping bags of boxed complete games. Some pretty cool stuff in the GBC pile included Super Mario Bros Deluxe, Wacky Races, and 3D Ultra Pinball (the one in rumble cart style) and maybe a dozen others.
Game Boy Advance Collection (complete) - About ten more boxed games from the same guy included Mario Kart, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Pokemon Sapphire, and Super Mario Advance 1-3 among others.
GBC Mario Party 6 and 7 (complete) - Complete in box with microphone, neither of which had ever been used. Minty! Same guy that brought the GBC and GBA games above.

@_@ I smell ebay for the lot, might make a killing with someone who loves portable gaming.

Rival Schools 2 JAP for PS1 isn't so much of a sequel as a 1.5. It only has one or two new characters and a few new modes that if you can't read Japanese text aren't really accessible.
Still a great game, but no need to go after it if you already have the 1st US release or the Dreamcast version (more of a true sequel with 3 character tag modes).

Pretty average Tuesday, very little in the way of interesting trade-ins.
PS1 Silent Hill (complete) - In mint condition but it's the greatest hits version.
PS3 Gran Turismo V Prologue (complete) - First time traded in.
PS3 Lair (complete) - First time traded in since the non-sixaxis control feature was added via online patch.

Missed a few days, trade-ins have been unspectacular. Yesterday we did get:
PS3 80GB System (loose) - in immaculate condition, everyone is looking for the 60GB these days but the 80 is a close second.
PS1 Silent Hill (complete) - greatest hits version lasted in the display case for a few hours, it's already gone.
I've got some good stuff today, I'll wrap it all up later when the day's done.

You know, I haven't posted in this thread, but I read it religiously - I find it fascinating... I worked in an independant video game store (which ultimately became a successful franchise, but when I was there, there were only two of them) circa '89-'92, and I miss the place (not the salary, though)... Keep up the great posts! I'll be lurking... ;)

OK, Friday Friday.
Dreamcast Last Blade 2 (complete) - included in an otherwise blah lot of Dreamcast stuff which included a broken console and five controllers. Only three games and the other two were super common.
TurboGrafx-16 Collection (jewel cased) - a set of about a dozen TG-16 titles including It Came From the Desert, Turrican, Veigues Tactical Gladiator, Dungeon Explorer and Neutopia. Neutopia was sold before it even got priced.
TurboExpress System (loose) - in great shape and with no dead pixels but no sound. There's a fix for this, so the system will have to wait a bit before turning up for sale. This was traded in by the same guy who had the games above, a recent regular at the store.
NES Collection (loose) - along with his seriously blinking NES, this guy brought in three of those Nintendo simu-leather cartridge holder boxes, about 35 games in all. He had most of the staples including Contra, Tyson, Double Dragon 1, 2, 3, Super Mario 3, Donkey Kong 3, Battletoads and Metroid. Most of these were gone before the day was over.

Saturday! Not as cool as some of the cooler Saturdays past, but lots of quality stuff traded in.
SNES Collection (loose) - a nice lot of top-rate titles including Zelda, Super Mario RPG, Turtles IV, Donkey Kong Country 2 & 3, and that pack-in cart with Super Mario World and All-Stars on the same cart.
N64 Collection (loose) - from the same guy who traded in the stuff above. Included Smash Bros, Mario Kart, GoldenEye, and the first Mario Party.
TurboGrafx-16 Super Star Soldier (in jewel case) - pretty sure this was the first time the game was traded in here.
TurboGrafx-16 Double Dungeons (in jewel case) - traded in by the same guy who traded Super Star Soldier. Not all that great of a game but I'm happy whenever ANY TG-16 stuff comes in here.

Nice Turbo stuff. Too bad its stuff I already have, so I won't get the luxury of watching your ebay store again.

All of that stuff will be sold in the store. It's just the high-end and overstock stuff that goes on eBay.

Sunday, bloody (and I mean that in more of a Brit way than a horror way) Sunday.
Dreamcast Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (complete) - always welcome here, on any system. The DC version is the least expensive but it's still a display case item.
Dreamcast Capcom vs. SNK (complete) - see above :)
Dreamcast Project Justice (loose) - I was just thinking about how this game should be in the top five most wanted Dreamcast titles, when one turns up today. Sadly, just a loose disc but a great one.
Nintendo DS Oendan (complete) - what a great game, and an import to boot. Hopefully someone will trade in the sequel so I can try it out.
Nintendo DS Oendan 2 (complete) - w00t.
