PS3 Devil May Cry 4 Collector's Edition (complete) - I'm a sucker for the metal tin "special editions" so this one is coming home with me.
N64 Pokemon Stadium 2 (complete) - nice because it's complete in the box, otherwise traded in fairly commonly.
Sega CD Lunar (loose) - ack, where's the case and the manual? I hate it when this happens.

I'm honestly surprised you took that in loose. But being lunar I guess it will sell. I'm stunned that so far, only two Turbo Grafx items have been traded in so far this year. Two that I'm madly hunting, but still, I thought you guys would see those traded in on a daily basis.

Joe is not listing every trade-in only the highlights. I can tell you for a fact that he has had more than 2 TG-16 games traded in. :)

Back when I was at Blockbuster and we were still dealing in VHS, people would play some interesting practical jokes. You know how hard it is not to laugh when someone storms in saying the copy of The Little Mermaid they rented was actually a porn? I figure every store has a fair share of complaints like that.
yep, my MiL got tricked when she rented an old film on video named 'Guess who's coming to dinner', turned out to be 'Guess who came at dinner'

Nice GameCube collection traded in today.
GameCube Legend of Zelda 4-in-1 Collector's Edition (complete) - this is the gray box one, with the original NES games etc. very nice, good condition and all.
GameCube Mario Tennis (complete) - why mention it? Maybe a personal observation but of all the Mario sports titles, this one turns up the least and even though it's tennis it seems to command more than baseball, golf and even soccer.
Other GameCube titles that I've already forgotten - but a good day overall for GC fans.

That 4 in 1 used to be a promotional give-away. I never thought it would become as expensive as it is now.

Besides Super Mario Strikers, Mario Power Tennis is the best Mario sports game and probably one of the best overall tennis games out there, even though it is a little unreal. :wink 2:

Oddly enough. the guy who used to sell me $1 Nes games at my local thrift store told me an interesting story like that. He can't take VHS anymore because he got a Betty Boop tape in; the tape was like the original cartoon cover. But the actual tape was someone dressed up like Betty Boop doing some guys. So someone had switched the tape and box before giving it to the thrift store.
Speaking of trade-ins, when I worked at EB before the merge, I remember taking in Ps2 and Xbox, and later opening them up only to find hardcore and some incredibly disgusting porn; so vile it would make Larry Flint get out of his chair and dance in disgust.
Hey Joe/ Mr. Digital Press, have you ever had an incident like that with a traded in system?

I actually prefered the original N64 version of it to be honest... Golf on the other hand, yes the Cube version was better.

SOOO much traded in today. In fact, today was a really weird "busy on both ends", with lots of trade-ins and sales, uncharacteristic for a Tuesday. Thing is, nothing on the trade-in side REALLY stands out, just a lot of good quality stuff.
NES ROB Robot (complete) - how do you like that? It actually works and I can play Gyromite with it, also included in the lot I bought from this fellow.
NES Castlevania, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, Super Mario 2 & 3 and Contra, among others (loose) - hey, this is what I'm looking for when some random guy stops in with a box of NES games. Thank you, sir.
XBox 360 Frontlines, Call of Duty 4, Orange Box (complete) - alone, pretty pedestrian. All together in good condition in exchange for a single game (Army of Two), priceless.
N64 Mega Man (loose) - I just don't see this one very much, and it was traded in with another game I don't think has ever been traded in to my store, Chameleon Twist. Stuff we don't see often is good on any day.
ColecoVision Gateway to Apshai (loose) - part of a pretty big trade-in of Atari 2600 and ColecoVision games and systems, this one just stands out. There were other good titles included for both systems in the lot.
Probably more but these are the stand-outs.

Regarding the porn talk, I just remembered when I came across a blank DVD case at a thrift store that had a $1.00 price tag on it. I opened it up to find that there was some Hustler magazine DVD inside. That's the only time I've ever seen porn at a thrift.

I've always wanted a ROB, but I've never run into one before. I hope his addition to Brawl doesn't make the price skyrocket or anything. Just out of curiosity, is it an item that's often in-demand at your store?

Today:
My day off. Well, hardly a day off, because these days my days off are spent in the dentist chair getting some long overdue work done. Anyway, today was Mike's day, just got off the phone with him.
PS3 40 GB System (sealed new) - Hmmm.
PSP Piano Black System (sealed new) - Um...
Wii No More Heroes (sealed new) - Uh oh.
PS3 Army of Two (sealed new) - So here we are again. All of the above from the same person. Is this stuff stolen? We now require ID from customers on this kind of thing, and we have it. What transpires next, who knows... All I know is that we paid pretty much what we pay for it used anyway. My guess is that whoever traded this in thinks we're not going to rat him out. But we SO will.
PSP God of War (complete) - a "legit" trade, first time this 2-week old game has been traded in which means I get to try it out. Trying games out makes me happy.

I was in the store when that went down. The guy seemed pretty taken aback when Mike asked for identification. I'm not one to make accusations, and I won't here. All I'll say is that it seemed a bit dodgy from the perspective of an outsider. Whether or not the stuff is hot isn't for me to say. But if it is hot and if people come sniffing around, then the only real option is to be honest and say something like "I don't know where this stuff came from. Here's the information I have about the person who traded it in." The last thing Digital Press needs is to be labeled as the store that knowingly accepts stuff stolen from Gamestop/Best Buy/Target/etc.

Today was pretty light in interesting trades and heavy in sales. It was one of those weird days where things sold that had been sitting on the shelf for quite a long time. Example: I sold a boxed Jaguar and a boxed Commodore 64 to two different customers. The Jaguar's thermal price sticker was so old that you couldn't read it (the display case's light is on 24/7 and actually wears out the thermal stuff on the top shelf over time).
White Import PSP System (loose) - in pristine condition, this came from a gal who also traded in a black PSP with version 1.5 firmware and a perfect Nintendo DS, also black. This is also the same customer who used the store credit to buy a Commodore 64 and a Commodore monitor.

Sorry to stray off topic, but at some point in the near future I am going to be making the pilgrimage to mecca, and hit this store up.
I don't care how far it is, I'm doing it.
I just can't decide if I'd rather go on a regular day, or hit a NAVA event.
The other part of the trip was going to be the ''Soprano's Tour'', to pay homage to the greatest show in television history, but I don't even know if that even exists anymore, especially now that they tore down Satriale's.
a boxed Jaguar and a boxed C64...respect to both customers.

Super-busy Saturday with a fair number of trade-ins. I haven't had anything really spectacular in over a week now, so I'm sorry if the thread is getting dull. I'm trying to stick with it so it paints a clear picture at the end of a full year.
XBox 360 Collection - the premium system was traded in with arguably the system's best titles: Call of Duty 4, Bioshock, Gears of War, Mass Effect, and a few others. The guy wanted a new PS3 because he felt the libraries were similar enough and he'd have a blu-ray player to boot. I've been getting a lot of that lately.
Nintendo DS Drawn to Life (complete) - interesting mainly because it's never been traded in before and I've been wanting to try it :) Looks like fun.
Nintendo DS Front Mission (complete) - I was kinda surprised to see this because for whatever reason, I totally missed when this came out. Never had it in my store, even when it was new. Otherwise, as above.
I also forgot to mention one interesting trade-in over the past few days that I looked up today. Turns out this one isn't just "old PC game", it's "pricey old PC game".
Windows Neverwinter Night Collector's Edition (almost complete) - this huge box has the game, a map, an artbook, some other stuff, but is missing the t-shirt (probably thankfully). Cool looking but after finding none on eBay I was surprised at how much it was fetching on amazon.com.

Joe... I had to GIVE AWAY a copy of this because nobody wanted it on eBay! Not even for ten bucks!
Besides, Amazon sellers inflate the price to make up for the shipping "credit" Amazon gives them. They overprice them by 15-20 bucks to make up for the fees and shipping costs.

03-23-2008, 12:03 AM
Yeah it seems pretty worthless to me too. I'll probably just stick it in my eBay store at a quarter the amazon price and hope for a bite. I don't really care about its value, just the fact that it isn't anywhere on ebay - that always intrigues me.

dont be too hasty. this is a very very rare item that really not many people even know about. the ebay ones are very rare and long apart, the people who are interested in them have to know theyre up there, or else itll fade into oblivion. i personally have sold my copy for 100$ shipped. and bought a like new one 100% complete for around 75.

You would be surprised. The record store I work at has had tons of thieves turn over personal info for a couple bucks in cash. There was the guy we called "The Silver Fox," who worked at Starbucks and snagged a couple copies of the last Shins album to sell to us every week. There was also an older guy that would bring in epic lots of Blockbuster DVDs and we even called every Blockbuster in a ten-mile radius to let them know and they acted disinterested until a few weeks later when they called us back after busting the guy's ass in the act. There was also a construction worker-type guy who would bring in new releases with stickers ripped off of them. He got a little overconfident one day and left Circuit City tags on a few of them and CC as well as the police received a call that day with not only his personal info, but his vehicle's tag number.
The worst offenders were an old fat woman named Priscilla and her husband Robert. They would bring in TV show box sets and the occasional Blu-ray movie sometimes several times a day. Their downfall was stealing from another record store in town (no one else in town is going to have more than one or two sealed Frank Zappa CDs...they brought about 6 and some Zappa DVDs). We contacted the owner of the other store and returned his goods (I don't even think we were compensated) and he returns the favor by being a complete and total pussy when they showed up to his store later that week and didn't call the cops. He called us a little while after they left and asked if they brought anything by...what a pussy.
Honestly, I'm surprised that the DP store wasn't already collecting personal info when trade-ins were taken. I would have assumed there's something on the books in most states requiring it, even though 90% of trades are legit. Not knocking Joe's practices, I'm just used to every store I've ever sold stuff at requiring personal info as a requisite.

Pretty light day overall.
NES Game Collection (loose) - Contra, Mike Tyson, Super Mario 3 among others. You've seen this here before but as "common" as it may seem, I can never get enough of these and they never stick around very long.
Genesis 3 System (loose) - Again, not a big deal, just interesting in comparison to the other stuff traded in today.
... from earlier in the week (on days I wasn't there):
GBA Tactics Ogre (loose) - Ah, I've filled an "orphan" spot. I've had the box and manual for quite some time, figured this would eventually get traded in. We get SO MANY GBA games! BAM right into my collection.
Commodore 64 System (complete) - Not such a big deal but not often traded in working and in the box all complete and such.

That's a good question. I also wonder how many people buy a NES, 2600, etc. because it's hip these days and then return it after they realize it's not quite the same as they remember it being?

See thats my problem when it comes to the older stuff. I never return the stuff, but I have to make sure to keep my expectations intact. Like I'm a nes/turbo grafx kid. I try playing an atari 2600 and can't find any appeal in it at all. Strangely, I like playing the 5200...

I was in my senior year at West Essex High School when that Unibomber business happened ...
My friends and I drove by the house a few times (had to pass it anyway to get to a mutual friend's house) shortly after it happened and there were F.B.I. vehicles staked out there for weeks.
Scary suff, and very sad.

Interesting day. Big piles of stuff traded in. I turned down a potential NES complete in box over the phone because the woman kept challenging my buy price. I did my best to be diplomatic but after one too many "how can you only offer me... " comments I told her I was no longer interested, goodbye, and hung up.
We did get:
SNES Cartridge Collection (loose) - these are the ones I really like. A shoebox full of games from someone who liked the games everyone else likes: Super Mario All-Stars, Super Metroid, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country, and about a dozen more.
PS3 80GB System (loose) - three months ago this would have been no big deal, but the 80GB system is three months' ago's 60GB system. Hard to find, no longer hanging around in new condition, and constantly asked about by customers. It's funny how the 60GB wouldn't move until it was discontinued and now the same goes for the 80GB. As long as Sony keeps cutting back on the features the older the model, the more desirable. Ah, the customer was interesting too. She called in early in the day claiming that no GameStop in the county would take the system for cash because they didn't keep that kind of money in their register. Well neither do I, but I do have a safe. She also said "I need to get this thing off my hands as soon as possible". I told her that didn't sound so great and asked if it was stolen. She laughed and said she'd be in later. When she arrived I got a similar explanation. I took a wild stab "Let me guess - an ex-boyfriend's system?" Cha-ching, Joe still has some intuition.

I hate haggle customers. Was it the "I can get more on ebay routine?" Or was she just being a dick?

She never mentioned eBay. She simply didn't understand that I have thousands of dollars of bills to pay each month and that making $20 on her item was just a drop in the proverbial bucket.

Um, $20 is a more than fair price; unless its a toploader. All the stores in my area that still take them only give $5 if its loose or complete.

Um, wait. I GIVE way more than that on core systems alone. I estimated that I would MAKE $20 - you know, profit - on her boxed (and by her estimation) complete and mint system. I offered much more than 20. I didn't even mention in my original post about this that the conversation started with her asking if we FIX NES systems because hers didn't work.
That BEOTCH.

You need a sign at the counter
"I have a business and need to make a promit, so my prices are low becasue I need to resell this stuff"
or something like that.

Heh its so funny cause now all my friends own the 40GB and their dying to play their PS2 and PS1 games so now they have their awesome LCD setup with the PS3...AND the ps2 lol. Waiting for 36 hours at CC for the win!
Also that lady seems crazy to me, she probably just found the game in the attic and thought OMG its like 20+ years old this has to be worth HUNDREDS! I wouldn't be surprised if she wanted something ridiculous like $200 at first..

That lady needs to realize that "mint" includes "working."
As far as the PS3 model fiasco, you think people are just going to start holding on to their ps2s? Maybe ps2 will be one of the systems that still retains its value after its death.

I am not trying to be a smart ass here, but I thought you don't give prices over the phone. Did I think wrong on this?

Well, he is the manager/owner of the store. But yeah, when I worked at Eb, they told us not to give out prices over the phone. I see exactly where you are coming from though.

I know this might not get answered but I think I'll ask anyway for pure curiosity sake.
Joe have you ever had someone bring in a item you wanted to buy off them and had a customer/regular buy it out from under you?
