Really nice free find today, just finished hauling it upstairs.

Over the summer my girlfriend mentioned that there were a few arcade cabinets at the school she teaches at. On the way to California Extreme back in July we stopped by and I took a look at them. Basically they're Jakks Pacific TV Games joysticks built into half size replica arcade cabinets. Two are Galaga replicas and one is a Pac-Man replica. One of the Galaga cabinets was totally dead but the other two worked fairly well. I guess they've been there for a few years and were donated to the school for one of their media rooms. A couple months ago she mentioned that the other Galaga quit working and that the Pac-Man would periodically reset.

A few weeks ago I asked if anyone had fixed the cabinets and she said the school had asked a couple places and they were told it would cost more than it would be worth. I offered to take a look at the cabinets and repair them in exchange for taking one of the Galaga cabinets home. Everyone at the school jumped on the opportunity, the principal herself replying "He just wants one of them? He'll fix the others for free? He can have it!" They were all pretty enthusiastic about getting the other two machines repaired.

I was there for about four hours working on the machines. Each one has a Jakks Pacific TV Games plug and play gutted and mounted inside, with the inputs running to arcade controls. The Galaga cabinets feature Pole Position, Galaga, Mappy, Ms. Pac-Man, and Xevious. The Pac-Man cabinet has Pac-Man, Super Pac-Man, Pac & Pal, Pac-Man Plus, New Rally-X, Bosconian, Dig Dug, and Galaxian. The Galaga cabinets have the parts from the rotating joystick (for steering) mounted to a little spinner adjacent to the joystick. A 13" CRT TV with the back removed is mounted inside each, using the standard AV jacks. The TV's are securely fastened to a TV shelf that slides out for access to the game electronics.

The cabinet construction is arcade quality as are the controls. The TV audio has been relocated to a professionally mounted speaker above the display area, beneath the marquee, as is done on an actual cabinet. The marquees light and are vinyl sandwiched between two pieces of glass. The TV area is covered with a piece of smoked plexi and the controls are standard arcade fare. The joysticks are selectable between 4 and 8 way (a slider on the underside sets this) proving that if Jakks would spend a little more Xevious and Bosconian would have proper 8 way movement, the game can do it, it's a control blockade. The plug and play is hardwired to use the AC adapter. The plug and play AC adapter, TV power, and marquee light all plug into a power strip inside the cabinet which is then hardwired to a fused socket and switch on the back of the cabinet. From the outside a standard three prong PC power cable is used, keeping everything safe and secure. Official artwork is used on the sides, front, marquees and control panels.

Problems with the cabinets were mixed, covering blown fuses, loose grounds, broken connections, worn switches - pretty much the standard wear and tear. Figuring out the order things have to be taken out (remove back, disconnect speaker, loosen bracket and slide out smoked plexi, unscrew TV shelf, slide TV out, disconnect plug and play, etc.) took up most of the time as did testing things as I went along. Really these weren't designed to be worked on with how buried the control panels are. However I was able to get them all fixed and tuned up to 100% functionality. Then of course it was time for me to collect my cabinet as payment (and just get the sucker to fit in the back of a Camry).

So here she is, four hours of hybrid arcade repair for this...

And yes, I got this one working too, just needs a new fuse for the external power connection. They really are beautifully made, I couldn't make one nicer if I tried. With the graphics and T-molding, it really does look like an authentic Galaga cabinet, just half the size.

My plans for it? Well, after I haul it to my parent's house in a couple weeks to put it into storage (I REALLY don't have the space for it but it was now or never - notice how one of the pictures was taken from outside my apartment?) I eventually plan on turning it into a classic vertical MAME cabinet. Pretty much everything I need is already on the cabinet. I'm going to rework the control panel a little (remove the "spinner" which is useless for anything other than what it's being used for now) and cut a new monitor mount for a vertical PC monitor but that's about it. Wire up an encoder, wire the speaker to a little computer speaker amp and it's ready to go.

Needless to say, I'm pretty psyched to have this.

Very nice machine. Can I ask the physical dimensions? I'm just curious as to how "mini" it is but it looks fairly large. Difficult to tell from the pics without a common frame of reference like someone standing next to it.

Picked up the following new at Walmart for $10 each:

Xbox 360
Beowulf
Spider-man 3

NDS
N+

I've never had the chance to play N+, and at $10, I couldn't pass it up.

I was at GameStop last night. The cute girl behind the counter gave me all these because I asked nicely. Actually, I just said something like "I got a Gordon Freeman, any chance I could get an FF6?" She walks over and starts putting a stack together. She is very awesome.

It really depends on which one. Not all of them qualify as rare and/or have any value.

In my opinion they are all very, very uncommon/slightly rare except for Captain Comic and Bible Adventures. I used to see Bible Adventures all the time, though I haven't seen it in the wild recentluy.

Yeah, those are some of the rarer ones. What portnoyd and ryaan1234 said is still true. Crystal Mines and Raid 2020 are more common Color Dream games as well.

Geez that seems pretty high. I do have Challenge of the Dragon CIB, didn't think it was all that uncommon. 50 seems really high for a loose cartridge.

Also keep in mind finding most of the black variants for Color Dreams/Bunch Games games will net you more value as they are pretty rare. I have #4-5, #7-12 on this list. If you ever find #1-3 or #6, let me know. I'll pay handsomely for them. :P I'd probably had them all if I didn't take a break from collecting - at the time, those 4 hadn't surfaced yet!

http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=5&threadid=10081

Raid 2020, Crystal Mines, Captain Comic, Metal Fighter, Baby Boomer and Bible Adventures are borderline common/uncommon and the most common out of the bunch.

Silent Assault, Robodemons, Master Chu, and the rest of the Wisdom Tree games would be uncommon.

Galactic Crusader, P'Radikus Conflict, Moon Ranger, King Neptune, Castle of Deceit and Pesterminator are borderline uncommon/rare.

Mission Cobra, Tagin Dragon, Challenge of the Dragon, Menace Beach, Operation Secret Storm and Secret Scout would qualify in my book as firmly rare. However, none really break the barrier of being worth more than $50 loose in my opinion.

>_> Hey don't look at me. I own Pesterminator, Tagin' Dragon, and Captain Comic (upside down label lol, as well as boxed) in blue and Exodus and Bible Adventures in black.

I did mention that Bible Adventures is really common, but I think the blue cased version is really hard to find, as all of the Bible Adventures I've ever seen is in black.

If anyone sees these unlicensed games in the wild BUY THEM. I've watched them steadily go up in value over the past few years and I predict the ones that are more uncommon now will be rarer in the future and likewise the common ones will go towards the uncommon side.

Hmm, interesting, thanks for the nice synopsis. I own Castle of Deceit and Challenge of the Dragon CIB and will have to check the cart color variations. I have noticed these games have become more and more rare to see in the wild over the past year or so. I use to see stuff like captain comic, metal fighter, crystal mines ect. all the time but never anymore. Think I'll go check my cart colors ;D.

Excellent day today!

My cousin woke me up at 8 am this morning and asked if I wanted to go to a swap meet and I was pissed, but it turned out to be great! He wanted to go to one we had never been to before way on the edge of town that's owned by the indian reservation. This place was a dump, it looked like we were in some town in a 3rd world country, all the stores were sheds built out of pieces of scrapped plywood. There was a truck completely covered in junk that I didn't even realize there was a truck under it until I saw the wheels on the bottom, should have took a pic of that.

We also decided to hit up some pawns thrifts etc on the way back. Here's what I got:

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff73/pogeyman101/IMG_0033.jpg

That entire lot of Genesis games was $5! The guy said they have been sitting there forever and he just wanted them gone. All are complete except for Mortal Kombat II which comes with no cover art and oddly the manual for the SNES version of MKII. All have rain damaged outer boxes but the carts are excellent condition!

They are:
Ghouls N Ghosts
Phantasy Star II
Streets of Rage
NFL College Football 94
Wonder Boy in Monster World
Phantasy Star III
Technocop
Dark Castle
Phantasy Star (SMS)
Whip Rush
Streets of Rage 2
Mortal Kombat II
Altered Beast
Super Street Fighter II

Here's all the other stuff I got:

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff73/pogeyman101/IMG_0035.jpg

Other stuff from the swap meet:
Ghostbusters (PS2) - $3
Parasite Eve + Phelios - $5
Gunstar Heroes missing manual - $3
Monster Rancher 3 disc only - $5
Polywhirl Pokemon Figure - $1

EZ Pawn:
Super Mario 64 - $5
Pokemon Stadium 2 - $5
Pokemon FireRed - $5
Obscure - $6
Resistance 2 - $15

Video Express:
F1 Championship Edition - $17.99

Another EZ Pawn:
F1 Championship - $10
DBZ Seasons 2 and 3 - $8 each

GS:

Sorry for the crappy pics

I'm planning on picking up A LOT of stuff for my collection this week, 1200 profit on ebay just last week, i love the christmas season!

That thing is just too cool. Was that a regular production type item, or was this a more custom deal? Man am I jealous. Nice find.

It's hard to say, no one at the school seems to know anything about them other than "they were donated years ago." I'm guessing they were probably made in small batches since each cabinet has pencil writing on the inside and back door that correspond to the phonetic alphabet. Pac-Man is Charlie, the Galaga still there is Hotel and the one I have is Golf. The work inside is pretty damn professional. They mounted the boards from the plug and plays inside and then ran all the wires to a CAT5 jack. The arcade control side runs to another jack and then they are tied together via a coupler. If I was to guess I'd say it was someone doing small custom jobs. However one would assume there would be some kind of maker's mark somewhere on the cabinet but there's nothing anywhere.

Also, nice shoes. Wish there was a galaga version.

Went to a local flea market today to see a vendor that is always selling games there. She has pretty reasonable prices and I sometimes take her my doubles and she usually trades me even.I took 7 games with me and traded for:
Bible Adventures
Karate Kid
Wrestlemania steel cage challenge
Wheres Waldo
1942
Astyanax
Back to the future

I saw another vendor that had a few games as well and picked up Kirbys Adventure for $5 and Gyromite for $3. Cool thing about the Gyromite was when I got it home and took it apart it had the Famicom adapter thing in it so I was pretty stoked about finding that.
I needed all of the games I picked up today and I am up to about 220 different NES games so far in my collection.

Isn't the 360 remote a Logitech Harmony if it is then you should look up what all that thing can do. I got one when thay first came out and love it. The best thing about it is it can turn on like five things at once and auto change the channel of the TV with one button. It does take some time to program but after that it's all good. If anyone sees these unlicensed games in the wild BUY THEM. I've watched them steadily go up in value over the past few years and I predict the ones that are more uncommon now will be rarer in the future and likewise the common ones will go towards the uncommon side.
Speaking of unlicensed games, I got Baby Boomer and Mission Cobra, both blue cart versions, for $4.95 each at a local game store (Games N' Things).

Don't forget about Italy, TX and Palestine, TX. And of course, down here in Texas we jacked with the pronunciations:

Italy is pronounced IT-lee (2 syllables, not 3)
Palestine is pronounced PAL-uh-steen

Yes, but you're Texans, you can't even speak proper English. :D

I seen a Mission Cobra cart at the flea market last week for $30, I considered buying it as trade bait. I ended finding another SEI Impossible Mission 2 boxed at another flea the same day.

Bunch Games' and later Color Dreams' games are hard to find boxed in decent condition, most of them seem trashed when I see them on ebay.

Other ridiculous variants out there, 3/5 screw and "cut"/"square" AVE cart collectors.

Picked up a new GP2x Wiz and Last Hope Pink Bullets (DC) from VideoGamesNewYork. Picked up a new copy of Twinbee Portable (PSP) from J&L in NYC. Got my copy of Mushimisama Futari 1.5 (360) from Play Asia as well. Luckily, I got a copy with the 1.01 DLC so I'm stoked about that! Finally, picked up Half Minute Hero (PSP) at lunch today.

Hmm, I'd like to get those Color Dreams/Wisdom Tree games, but I really don't like to own crappy games regardless of rarity. Other than about 3 of them, they're really only worth $10-15, aren't they?

I actually looked into what color dreams games I had last night and found in a tote:

I've never even opened them before to check the contents, heh. Both of them are in mint condition...the challenge of the dragon doesn't even have the plastic wrap around the cart taken off. I think I also had Joshua (iirc) or some religion game in there that was a black cart variant. I don't really see a difference in price when these things are on ebay though, black or blue. I've seen both these games up for about $100 BIN but doubt they'll ever sell for that high, being such terrible games.

All Wisdom Tree games have black carts AFAIK. There are a couple of blue carts out there, but I don't know if they were real, or just someone who peeled the label off a black cart and put it onto a blue cart. They're rare regardless.

The most playable Color Dream games are Crystal Mines, Baby Boomer, and Captain Comic IMO. The rest vary between average (at best) to horrible.

Isn't the 360 remote a Logitech Harmony if it is then you should look up what all that thing can do. I got one when thay first came out and love it. The best thing about it is it can turn on like five things at once and auto change the channel of the TV with one button. It does take some time to program but after that it's all good. Maybe it's the tec. geek in me but that thing is definitely worth it!

Looks like it can do some fancy stuff. I was just giddy that the buttons lit up. :P That's how I found it, actually. I saw something glowing at the bottom of a box of remotes and went exploring to see what was making all the pretty lights.

I don't know if it will still work on my TV or not. Now the Comcast has forced me to use their converter box, its crappy remote has hijacked remote duties. I haven't looked into whether or not I can program another remote to take its place. That'd be swell if I could.

The reason why you sometimes see Wisdom Tree games in blue is because Wisdom Tree was some little sub-company owned by Color Dreams. I think the blue plastic was cheaper and they used that late in Wisdom Tree's life during the NES years. I'm not exactly sure if that's why, but the whole "just someone who peeled the label off a black cart and put it onto a blue cart" thing you said is just not right.

btw, I mentioned I just today got Baby Boomer and Mission Cobra for $4.95 each. I did not know Mission Cobra was an R6. I figured Baby Boomer was the find and Mission Cobra was just some common Bunch Games release.

Hmm, I've always wondered what Captain Comic was like. Is it coincidental that it's named that or does it actually take after the excellent DOS games? Captain Comic I & II were two or my favorite old dos side scrollers. I'd be quite interested in trying it if it's related to that series.

I've got a boxed copy of Captain Comic sitting right here on my shelf and on the back they use quotes from the review of PC version LOL. Like this:

"COLORFUL AND WELL THOUGH-OUT ARCADE STYLE GAME."

I've never played the PC version, but to be honest I never liked the NES version. Controls were a bit stiff and the animation was very... jerky. I didn't put much time into playing the game, though. I might try it out again in the future. My copy has an upside down label LOL. Great quality there.

Lol...awesome review there, and nice fail on the label. I would expect nothing less from color dreams, hahah. It looks like I'll be sticking with the pc versions. If I ever see a cheap cart in the future I'll still give it a whirl for disappointment's sake.

It is inspired by the DOS original, but really it isn't as good. It is kind of insteresting though, the levels are clearly inspired by the original levels, they're just redesigned for the new graphics engine. Hope you like poor controls and a lot of frustration though, because this game has them in spades... not that the DOS game isn't hard, it is thanks to its total lack of a save system (though evidently the second game, which was registered-only, allowed you to save? Not sure, haven't played it myself), but thanks to the controls and enemies the NES game is probably harder, and not as good either.

Still, for fans it might be worth a try... just don't expect something as good as the original. I thought the DOS one was okay back in the day... nothing outstanding, and I don't think I ever got that far thanks to the lack of saving, but decent stuff. Unfortunately I don't think it's just the much stiffer competition that caused the NES game to be thought of much less fondly. Still, sure, try it sometime if you can. :)

... What the heck is up with the controls of the DOS version though... I mean, Insert is the default attack button? Really, with the arrow keys as movement and Spacebar as jump? So awkward... (you press Alt to go through doors of course, and Tab for teleport. Such obvious controls!) Why DO keyboard games so often feel the need to scatter the keys all over the keyboard from one end to the other... well, at least they can be redefined to something normal like Control and Alt (the most common DOS game action buttons) or Z and X (common in emulator defaults, Japanese PC games, etc).

If you think that's jerky, you don't want to play early '90s DOS shareware games... now THAT'S jerky. Stuff like, oh, Captain Comic... compared to the DOS version, the NES one is actually very fluid. That's because it took a while to develop good scrolling mechanisms on the PC, so even in 1990 many games still had very jerky scrolling. The original Commander Keen trilogy was the first DOS shareware game with smooth scrolling...

But anyway, as I said, even so the controls are definitely better in DOS. The scrolling may be jerky, but at least the controls are precise. Not much music though, can't expect much from the PC speaker... not that the music in the NES version is much of an improvement though. :) So yeah, overall I'd say it is better on the PC. The shareware version of Captain Comic 1 should be easy to find and run in DOSBox, try it out.

As for Wisdom Tree/Color Dreams/AVE, I only have one of their 'games', but it's the US Maxi 15, Pyramid/Double Stack version. I got it for like $5 locally, cart only... and I'm kind of glad i did, no way would this be worth the $30 or $40 or whatever it goes for online. I mean, sure it's fifteen games, but it's fifteen Color Dreams and AVE games... not exactly quality stuff, most of them. :) A few are entertaining though, like Menace Beach, Chiller, and a few more. (Pyramid, by the way, I find virtually unplayable...)

Oh, I did get one more game yesterday. Perhaps the last one for a little while, but it was impossible to pass up... Mario Kart DS (card only) for just $10! I'd love to have more DS games, but most are kind of pricey, and MKDS still sells for about as much as it did when it came out. It's awesome to finally have the game, and for a very good price too.

Oooh also got the newer Battlestar galactica season 2.0 set for $1.00, sans disc one. I will sell the discs for something like $5 a piece as replacements on eBay. I prefer the old Battlestar Galactica anyway :P

I don't doubt that. I was just joking around. Some of those old giant speakers are literally boat anchors. Fisher is actually an alright brand and their speakers should have good fidelity. as long as you stay away from old Radio Shack (Realistic) and Panasonic speakers you should be fine.

There was actually an old Rat Shack speaker that used to get the audio nuts all hot and bothered. Well, the ones that were interested in good sound more than the name written on it, anyway. It was a medium-small size speaker. I'll ask my father-in-law what the name of those were.

edit: I think even some of the old realistic ones are now considered decent (again, if you don't care about the name it says). Not sure what 'old' means though. Maybe I should say 'vintage'? Anyway, I'm just basing this off half-remembered conversations.

I haven't found any of Don Johnson's albums on CD yet. Just vinyl... and laserdisc. o.o

Anyway, it rained yesterday so there were almost no booth people selling stuff. I went there today and found a shareware disc for a buck. I also had to buy a replacement door knob and deadbolt set because my brother and mother destroyed the set in one of our entrance doors. Even after I've told them to not torture the poor things.

The set cost me $14.
