I played a tiny bit more Super Mario RPG for Super Nintendo just to ensure that the battery is working properly. Man, what a fantastic game, I'm really looking forward to the day when I replay this (again, I've already played through it at least a couple times).

Just finished this one recently for the first time, and yes it is damn fantastic! I regret that I couldn't quite appreciate rpgs back in the 16-bit days (I did rent this one and thought it was good but still.. rpgs didn't get my moneys back then).

Just started Phantasy Star IV and I'm loving it so far. It's so fast paced, and the music is great. Seems like it will be a bit grindy, but the battles are over in seconds anyway. I've tried all the classic Phantasy Stars but this one grabbed me right away, perhaps because it's not ass-hard!

I would have to say Super Mario RPG is probably tied with Secret of Mana for my favorite RPG. I usually play through it once a year.
As for games I've currently been playing:
TMNT IV: Turtles in Time on SNES (I just introduced this game to my 5 year old son and he loves it.)
COD: MW3 on Wii ( It's not a classic game, but I play online everyday nearly.)

I'm at 95% completion in The Fast and the Furious (PS2). I've completed all of the freeway races, beat 39 of the 40 roll-up racers, and have five drift battles left (I'm starting to think that the last racer doesn't show up until you've beat everything else - we'll see).

I've racked up about seven hours in Mega Man Legends 2 on PlayStation now. I just beat the Manda Island ruins and got the first key. Then I spent around an hour on the damn quiz mini-game, haha. I got all of the items from the two students, then I cleared the teacher's 10 question quiz. Now I have the option for the 100 question quiz or paying two million zenny, but I'm not going to consider either right now. Man, these quizzes really mean business. I feel like I'm taking some Japanese placement exam or something, haha. While some are no-brainers, others are just ridiculous. I'm pretty hopeless with the questions about chemistry or the history questions involving dates/years. Some of the pop culture questions are really obscure too. I had to go through the quizzes many, many times until I figured out the answers to the tricky questions via trial and error.

I now have over 10 hours in Mega Man Legends 2 on PlayStation, and I'm on Calbania Island, chasing after those annoying kids who scream incessantly. I just cleared the optional ruins and poked my head into but didn't complete the next story mission. The funny thing is that I knew playing through this game, especially if I would enjoy it, which I expected and do indeed, would be a slightly depressing experience, what with everything that happened with Mega Man Legends 3, which I was excited for even before playing this one, yet the more I play, I find I'm more depressed in regards to how ridiculously expensive The Misadventures of Tron Bonne is. All the characters in the Legends series have so much personality and charm, but Tron and her Servbots are definitely among my favorites. I want to play her game more than ever now, but the average going rate is so high to the point that I just can't justify paying that much. It's one thing to be bummed about games that were never even finished, but here's a game that was finished and released that I can't reasonably get my hands on. :( Maybe I'll be more bummed about Mega Man Legends 3 once I finish this game, though. I hear it ends on a cliffhanger, so I'm sure that makes the cancellation of MML3 all the more frustrating.

I have around 16 or 17 hours in Mega Man Legends 2 on PlayStation now, and I just cleared the Bonnes out of Kimotama. Spent a bunch of time with the racing mini-game, although I still stink at it and can't really wrap my brain around the awkward controls (having to use all four directions on the d-pad plus the shoulder buttons for maneuvering and boosting/breaking and holding the circle button to use the jet skates in the first place). Now I'm ready to hunt down the third key. I'll have to try to pass the next license test sometime soon too, since I don't have access to the optional dungeon on Saul Kada just yet.

L.A. Noire (PS3)

I found this at Walmart for $19.96 with an extra bonus case ("A Slip of the Tongue") besides the bonus case included ("The Consul's Car"). I heard many good things about the game and had been interested in it ever since it showed on Game Theory. I am digging the game. I haven't been posting updates on my Mega Man Legends 2 progress on PlayStation, but I have been playing a fair deal. I have over 30 hours on the clock, and I assume I'm in the final dungeon. Probably a good third, maybe more, of those hours can be attributed to purely optional stuff, though. Nothing in the game has been more challenging than passing the S class license exam, clearing the 100-question quiz, and beating Mad Mossa's times in the racing mini-game. I spent at least 5 hours on the racing mini-game alone, destroying my thumb in the process. And once I finally beat all 3 of that bastard Mad Mossa's times, I got a grand prize of jack and squat, haha. I couldn't believe the game challenges you to beat his times (which are incredibly difficult to beat) and gives you absolutely nothing for it, not even some acknowledgement (outside of entering your initials in the 1st place spot, if that counts). Now I'm just finishing off the last few optional things I have left, like turning dark to buy the secret items from the shifty merchant, and then I'll probably have to grind for more money with that gold bird on Manda some more if I intend to buy everything.

I think I'm somewhere near the middle of Killzone 2. It is super tedius, one of those games I just want to finish to say I beat it and never play it again. However, I'm also going to try out the multiplayer soon. Beyond that I hit up some Halo Reach and Uno on 360.

Trying to force myself to play old Xbox games like Breakdown (drab looking, boring, bad controls), America's Army: Rise of a Soldier (drab looking, boring, slow paced), and Brothers In Arms: Earned In Blood (OK, but slow paced). I finished off most of the optional stuff in Mega Man Legends 2 on PlayStation, so now I just have money grinding left. I've bought everything in the shops except all of the Energy Canteen and Medicine Bottle upgrades, and I have around half or so of the weapon upgrades done. The more money I blow through, the more I see how much more I still need, haha. It was a whopping 2 million zenny to get back to light Mega Man and around another 1.5 million on the three final Buster Parts available in the shop. I still have some really pricey weapon upgrades remaining, and with the Energy Canteen and Medicine Bottle maxing out at 99, I believe, that'll be a good chunk of cash. Before I grind more, I think I'll finish off the final dungeon up till the final boss, just to see what treasure I may find.

This is how I've felt with some of my PS3 games. Parts of Resistance and Killzone 2 are dragging on forever, where as Heavy Rain, Uncharted and Tekken Hybrid were all enjoyable from start to finish. I hope that No More Heroes: Heroes Paradise(my next PS3 game to beat next month) is much more enjoyable than Killzone 2 has been so far.

And since you brought up old Xbox games, I just so happen to be starting Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast later today. I already played thru the sequal(Jedi Academy) and loved it although I'm sure Xbox live multiplayer helped with that opinion. Beyond that I'm still dredging thru Killzone 2 and playing a bit of Halo Reach and MW3 on the side.

Lately I've been less "playing" Mega Man Legends 2 on PlayStation and more just turning it on and letting it do its thing in the background, haha. I can't believe how much zenny it takes to get everything and how tedious it is to get that zenny. Since I got tired of manually grinding, I'm now wrapping a rubber band around my controller and abusing a trick to earn and collect money basically on auto-pilot, only having to deal with Mega Man getting hit once every, say, 20 minutes on average. I can get over 3 million in 2 hours, so that's not bad. And then I spend it all in 2 minutes, haha. Definitely beats manually fighting either way. A few more sessions like that I'll have everything, and then I'll go ahead and beat the game and retire it to the shelf.

I've been playing Ni no Kuni (DS version) exclusively. I didn't have to consult a guide, until I got the first town.

Using the spellbook took a bit of trial and error. At first, I only knew I had to cast a spell because the game displayed a screen beforehand telling me to take out my stylus. But I didn't know what spell I needed to use. I eventually realized that the correct spell is usually highlighted in red during the conversation preceding the spell casting screen.

That made things a lot easier, as I could anticipate when I needed to use the spell book. I've now gotten to the point where you can recruit the game's monsters, called Imagen/Imajinn. I spent several hours backtracking to previous areas, to capture one of every kind. It's becoming as addictive as a Pokemon game!

I have now gotten thru the first two levels of Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast on original Xbox. While I like parts of the game I'm getting annoyed at how much like Sherlock Holmes they want me to be. I should be use to this since the original Star Wars: Dark Forces on PS1 was the same way. You will only get so far before you have to start really using your brain to figure out how to get to the next section. It's also reminded me of one of the worst things I hated about early fps games: motion sickness:puke: Muddy dark textures and running fast do not mix well. So it may take me a bit longer than I'd like to get thru this game but I have until November 1st to finish it.

I also dived back into COD: Black Ops for the double experience weekend and of course Halo Reach. But lately I've been playing alot of Reach due to a new co-op partner. Tomorrow or Tuesday I should also be starting No More Heroes: Heroes Paradise on PS3 now that I finally beat Killzone 2 yesterday. K2 sucked by the way.

It took a ton of money grinding, but I finally got enough to purchase everything in Mega Man Legends 2 on PlayStation. Then it was a quick and easy matter to beat the game. It's a good thing I bought all 99 Energy Canteens because the last boss drained me of most of them (actually, I died on my first attempt). Granted, if I practiced more, I could've gotten much better at dodging the attacks. Anyway, I gotta say, the people who claim that this game ends on a big cliffhanger are morons. I mean, yeah, it doesn't end perfectly resolved, but it's played for comedic value. There's no reason to believe that it won't be eventually resolved, so there's no need to worry or anything. In fact, I applaud Capcom for not spoonfeeding players, giving them a braindead, cliche "Everything ends super duper happily ever after!" ending. I don't think there's anything at all about this game that suggests that a third game was intended back then. Obviously they started a third game regardless many years later, but that's a different matter. I don't think it damages the story or leaves it incomplete by not having a third. Quite the contrary actually, I think that Mega Man Legends 2 pretty well explains and resolves everything in its universe, so I don't know how they'd come up with a new crisis for Mega Man to address. Of course, it still majorly sucks that Mega Man Legends 3 got cancelled, especially in such a ridiculous, awful way, but Mega Man Legends 2 is definitely no Shenmue 2.

Im going through the Sega CD and 32X library, the GOOD parts of those libraries. So only about 2 handfuls of games really.

So far Ive played:
Lords of Thunder, awesome game, love the Thunder Armor guy most, great music too.
Robo Aleste, i dont like how slow your firing is, like its not made for people who are keeping the fire button down.
Kei Squadron, a cute em up, theres a ton of power ups, but i think your character is too big for the space allowed to move around in.
Knuckles Chaotix, apparently this is the only good game thats exclusively for the 32X. I need to play it more so I can get used to the controls. I dont like Sonic games that much, but it looks good and I want to play in those falling levels that look cool.
Virtua Fighter, its fun, a little weird with the jumping of course and i have to wait a bit to get back up. I like it.
Kolibri ,its a shooter game where you play as a humming bird of all things. At least you dont play as a dolphin. I have no idea what Im supposed to do in the first level. Weird, I have from a review you can shoot stuff, but I can only dash now. :/
Tempo, this is the worst 2D platforming game Ive played, there are worse ones Ive seen reviews of, but this is one Ive played. You dont get any story or motivation for why youre wanting to go through the levels. The colors are colorful, but thats the only good thing about it.

Since I spent a good chunk of time on Mega Man Legends 2, I'd like to get in a couple games that will hopefully be short before I head into my next long-term game commitment. Since it was brought up in another topic, I figured now was as good a time as any to play through the 3D remake of Rondo of Blood via Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles on PSP. I've always been pretty down on this remake, as they took a game that looked stunning in 2D and gave it a remake in mediocre 3D (not that I have a problem with 3D, just that this 3D is undeniably nothing remarkable for its time or in general artistic direction). Now that I'm giving it a serious chance, I see that it's not just the visuals that took a downgrade. It doesn't sound as good either, nor does it play as good. The controls definitely feel a lot more sluggish and the hit detection isn't as tight. That said, it doesn't seem bad taken on its own; it's just a needless remake given that the game was already practically perfect to begin with and this version only manages to be worse. But Castlevania is still Castlevania, so it's still something I want to play through.

One other thing that's bugging me, though, is what's up with publishers localizing games with an option to play in Japanese yet not providing translations for the full game? I replayed the beginning multiple times over because of that, and I still don't know if picking Japanese will bite me in the ass at some point. I started with Japanese, saw that there were no subtitles for the little bit of voice in the opening scene with Death, restarted in English, got to the cutscene in the next stage and saw the dialogue boxes to go along with the voice acting and heard how lousy the English dubbing was, then started over again in Japanese. I just hope that scene with Death will be the only one like it. After my experience with Resonance of Fate, this kind of stuff is getting pretty frustrating. It seemed like everything was going to be subtitled in Resonance of Fate, but then when characters started chatting away mid-battle, I was screwed out of understanding that dialogue. Why do localizers think that's acceptable? If you can't subtitle everything (everything of significance, that is; little battle cries and such don't matter), then don't include the option to play in Japanese (as much as it pains me to listen to poor dubbing), or AT LEAST provide a warning that not all dialogue is subtitled.

I've also been playing Mega Man Legends 2. Well up to the first dungeon at least. (I want to finish the MML 1 first before I really get into it.) When I first heard MM's new voice actor, it sounded awfully familiar. After 20 minutes of listening to him I figured out who it was; it's the actress who played Sailor Jupiter in the english dub of Sailor Moon!

I've also been playing alot of Eternal Sonata on the PS3. Although I had to redo several hours of gameplay today, because I missed a weapon upgrade for Viola at the Glissando Cliffs area. Several players seem to have trouble with the second fight with Tuba, but I didn't find the first fight all that bad. However, I think it's because I overleved a bit when I got lost in Fort Fermata.

It took a lot of practice on Dracula's brand new third form (and a lot of tedious repetition of the first two forms), but I beat the 3D remake of Rondo of Blood today via Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles on PSP. I first "beat" it getting the bad ending, if that even counts, but then I rescued all the maidens and beat it for real. Too bad both endings were pretty nonexistent. I mean, they were better on PC Engine, for crying out loud. But so was the game as a whole. I stuck with Richter the whole time, but now I'm starting to use Maria some as I work on getting a 100% file. It requires quite a bit more effort than on PC Engine considering all of those secret music tracks to find. I also have yet to beat Stage 5', although I have gotten up to the Hydra boss in it. I'll need to work on Boss Rush mode as well.

I'm slowly but surely closing in on maxing out my percentage in the 3D remake of Rondo of Blood via Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles on PSP. I've beaten stage 5' now (just with Maria so far and just along the upper path), and I've gotten all but three or so of the music tracks hidden within the stages. I've also unlocked half of the stuff from the Boss Rush mode (since I have to beat each of the three modes three times over).

I'm up to 98% in the 3D remake of Rondo of Blood via Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles on PSP. That damn full boss rush is the sticking point. I've cleared it once, but many other attempts have been foiled by a little bit of screwing up or bad luck and even the game freezing once. None of the bosses are challenging me much on their own, so it's really getting tedious. And if I die on Drac's third form, that's 15-20 minutes of playing for nothing and having to start all over again. It's dumb enough that the boss rush mode is required to 100% a file, but it's even dumber that they make you do each three times over. There's no justifiable reason for that at all, besides to create redundant busywork. Just give me all three rewards for one clear. Or make them earned for beating different times, and if you clear more than one time in a single go, then give out all the rewards you've qualified for.

Tons of fighting games:

Capcom vs SNK Millennium, awesome, really cool fighting game, totally washed out the horrific putrid taste out of my mouth from....
Shaq FU, reviewed it today in the Shaq review thread. Though I did read up that the PAL version is better, but I really dont see the point of playing it, nothing cool about it, and all the characters are too spread out in power. If you choose Voodoo or Shaq in the tournament mode youre gonna win against your buddies.
Marvel vs Capcom, god, this is a very accessible game and you can win it in one day, then keep going back to play as other characters. Love the graphics, totally reminds me of the cartoon Marvel shows I watched as a kid. And the special moves are done with buttons mainly, AWESOME!

That's a tough question, because I still play a lot of retro games. Last night I played The Firemen on SNES, which is a really awesome and quick game to play if you don't have a lot of time and want something fun and pleasing to the eyes and ears.

Every so often, my fiance challenges me to Kirby's Avalanche, which I royally suck at. I can beat her with Dan in Puzzle Fighter, but I am her gimp when it comes to Kirby's Avalanche.

One game I truly recommend for retro collectors is Super Mario World 3: Return To Dinosaur Land. I know it isn't a retro title, but it is a really well fan-designed game that takes the heart and soul of Super Mario World to generate a direct sequel that did not have to exist. It is not just a testament of how influential Super Mario World is, but a testament to how badly people wanted more. I swear up and down, the game offers more of that charm and challenge that gamers growing up with the SNES grew to love.

Even though I've been buying plenty, my gaming diet has been severely lacking in strategy RPGs in recent years. I played through one on PC-FX last year, but I was in the mood for another so I started up Jeanne d'Arc on PSP. I think part of my problem is that a lot of the ones coming out in recent years have been really grind-y and time-consuming, and I'm not in the mood for a strategy RPG that'll take me 100+ hours. Jeanne d'Arc seems good since it feels like a "back to basics" kind of strategy RPG, and even though I've heard some refer to it as a "beginner's RPG", it seems like it has a decent level of challenge. I breezed through the first battle, unsurprisingly, but I actually got a Game Over in the second. No complaints so far, so hopefully I'll like this one.

Other than that, I got a couple cheap games from Amazon, so I tried out Glory of Heracles on DS. Cute sense of humor, but no plans to seriously play it any time soon.

Eh, hello everybody. I recently bought a Super Famicom to put together a collection of the games that made a big impression on me as a child (and also finally play the ones I couldn't afford back then) and your forum kept popping up in Google searches I was doing for stuff so I joined in the hope I could switch off the black background but also to read your wise, wise words.

Just finished Yoshi's Island (SFC). It's undoubtedly a very good game but I feel a little ashamed I don't love it as much as everyone else seems to, for me it's nowhere near the standard of SMW. Some of this I think is the focus on collectable stuffs (which unlock the secret levels) as opposed to the first game having secret exits and so on which directly rewarded exploring rather than just picking up so many of a thing in every level. I've never been the type of gamer to 100% games so it's a shame it's such a focus of this, there are large swathes of several levels I could run past because all that was down there was a flower or some red coins and it didn't give me any incentive to explore. Also the vehicle transformation bits were all pretty bad.

Everything else is very well done though. Graphically it's utterly stunning and I'm pleased I got to play it full screen on Super Fami through RGB (although sadly not on a CRT). The animation is glorious (that wee march on the spot Yoshi does when you leave him :swoon: ), everything's smooth and fast and the fancy dan scaling stuff they used the Super FX chip for still looks really nice to my eyes. The bosses are a welcome change to the norm, the music is the perfect blend of catchy and annoying and the level design, once I'd got past my hangups about the collectables and focussed on just getting to the goals, really did take me back to being 12 and playing Mario World with a big shit-eating grin on my face. And it's hard. There are bits of this that caused more swearing than anything in recent memory and I've platinum'd Dark Souls. If you can 100% this then you are a hero in my book. Overall, worth the tenner I paid for it anyway.

Now going to start Mickey's Magical Quest (SFC) I think it's called, the first Capcom Disney game of the SNES era. This is short and easy apparently, which is fine by me.

I keep getting tricked back into Halo Reach because of my women. I really need to finish up Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast(Xbox) and No More Heroes: Heroes Paradise(PS3) before Halo 4 comes out next month.

Things are moving along well in Jeanne d'Arc on PSP. I'm in Chapter 2, and I believe I'm up to the 9th story battle of the game. I've gotten a fair number of Game Overs, but not so many as to be really frustrating and not so few as to be way too easy. I got one due to the turn limits, which is a pretty interesting aspect of the battle system. While it sucks to lose because of it, it's nice that it forces the player to move along swiftly and not hide in a corner healing up. Of course, it's basically a necessity in this game considering MP regenerates some after every turn, so unlimited turns would allow you to heal infinitely. I like that the battles don't tend to take more than 30-45 minutes at the most, as opposed to other strategy RPGs where I've been in battles that can drag on for over an hour, even upwards of 2 hours (I remember just barely clinging on to life for so long in many Vandal Hearts battles). So far I've been avoiding free combat for the most part, only doing 2 or 3 optional battles. I'm sure I could see fewer Game Overs if I grind up my levels more, but I'm happy with the challenge level where it's at.

Rockman X on the Super Famicom. This is the first Megaman game I've ever played somehow and I'm rather enjoying it, done one boss a session for the last few nights. Utterly beautiful looking game.

Finishing Super Metroid Redesign, and it's awesome hack of the original Super Metroid, but much harder.

I beat the main storyline for Ni no Kuni last night. The final boss wasn't really hard, just long. Although, the guide I was using was completely wrong about the boss's weakness.

I also discovered how to download the DLC, including several exclusive monsters. However, three of them look to be re-colors of creatures that you can catch during the normal game.

I just cleared the first story battle of Chapter 3 in Jeanne d'Arc, which if I'm not mistaken puts me up to the 14th story battle in the game. I had my fiance look up the total number of story battles in the game (I didn't want to see any spoilers), and I believe there are 36 so I'm a third of the way done in that regard. The last few battles of Chapter 2 were definitely tricky. I got another Game Over due to running out of turns, not to mention some normal losses. The main problem was that the terrain was getting a lot more difficult to work with. Seems like the best path in terms of safety and killing off all the enemies efficiently will often end in me getting trapped in some spot, blocked by enemies, and by the time I clear the way, I don't have enough turns left. I was just one measly turn and a tiny bit of damage away from clearing every enemy in Chapter 2's final battle. I took a different path the next time which got me to the boss enemy quicker, but I ended up beating the battle with around 5 other enemies left alive. Ideally, I'd really like to clear out all of the enemies to get the EXP. Oh well, there are always free battles to grind with if need be.

Chapter 3 in Jeanne d'Arc on PSP sure came and went fast compared to Chapter 2. I'm now up to, I believe, the second battle of Chapter 4. I think that would be story battle 15? 16? Something like that. Now I know why people say to always keep Liane in your party. She's not quite as high as Jeanne but still at a higher level than anyone else, so I seem fine. The Colosseum also opened up, but I haven't touched it yet. I have a special optional battlefield I still haven't done as well. When I checked it out, I saw that it was loaded with dragons and golems and such, and all of the enemies are around level 30. I'm only just now starting to get all my characters around there, so I'll probably take a stab at it soon.

Been in a big arcade mood, and taking cool screen shots I uploaded to facebook. Giga Wing, Mars Matrix, Progear and Dimehoo all in one day. Theyre quarter eaters for sure, but Progear is the easiest. Glad I dont have to actually go to an arcade to play them. Most of my deaths stem from taking the screen shots.

I'm up to story battle 20 in Jeanne d'Arc on PSP now. It sucks that I had to pick one battle and recruitable character or the other for battle 19. I ended up going with Rose, since I believe she's the only playable whip user in the game, but I also did the entire battle with Claire just to see what it was like. It's nice that they at least open up both fields after you've made your choice so you can do free combat on whichever field you didn't go with.

Things are moving along in Jeanne d'Arc on PSP. I'm up to story battle 25 now, and it's starting to feel like I'm moving into the final stretch of the game. I also did a cleared a couple optional battlefields that required a ton of bridge-building. I just BARELY beat the Reaper in the previous battle. I was on my last character, on the last turn, and if I had done 6 fewer hit points of damage, it would've been Game Over. It's my own fault for making it so close, though. Instead of sending my four characters through one side or the other, I split them into two groups of two, which wasn't very efficient for clearing out the handful of enemies and moving forward.

I think I'm up to story battle 32 in Jeanne d'Arc on PSP now? Something like that. I spent some time checking out both paths in the split I just got up to, so that meant repeating one battle twice and then doing two battles a piece for each path. Nothing too exciting, it's not like they offer unique recruitable characters like in the previous split. Just a slightly different take on the story, which has no lasting effect beyond these battles. Now to get back to making real progress. If I'm not mistaken I'm on the last handful of story battles in the game, so it probably won't be too long before I have it beat. I'll have some optional stuff to check out beyond that, though.

I'm playing Epic Mickey, nearing the end. The end of my sanity. Dealing with the broken camera angles has fractured my psyche. Having NPCs ask me to mow their lawn AND do their laundry just to open the gate to the next area is spurring my urge to gore innocents. I don't know who I am anymore. This is it for me. I've lost it.

Let the killing begin..
