#29 - Akumajou Densetsu (Famicom)

Decided to finally try out the Japanese version, doubly so because of Kitsune Sniper's translation patch. I hadn't really sat down to play the game with the intention of beating it in over 15 years, so it was a fun ol' time of relearning stage layouts and enemy patterns. Wound up using Trevor for pretty much the whole game once I realized that I didn't much care for using any of the other characters :(

For the most part it wasn't too hard, though that last stage was fairly tricky and Death can just go fuck himself. Thank god for double shot boomerang/cross action; triple shot by the time I got to Drac.

Off the top of my head:

Castlevania: Bloodlines (Genesis) - An absolute blast to play. I've only recently gotten into the Genesis library after getting a Nomad/Genesis lot off of ebay earlier this year. It has fantastic graphics and sound for a Genesis game, and I like the little gameplay twists for the two playable characters. Short, somewhat difficult game. The level design is generally solid, although the Versailles level had me swearing more than usual. I preferred this game over Super Castlevania.

Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES) - Solid platforming bliss. Getting 100% on the game is a bit much, and sadly I required GameFAQS for a few of the DK Coins. Other than that, I loved the game.

Bonk 1,2, and 3 (TG-16) & Super Bonk (SNES) - So I really got into this series via emulation a few months ago. Bonk 2 is easily the best of the series, IMO. Bonk 3 adds in the twist of changing sizes, and I found it to be more of a detractor to the overall solid gameplay. I got Super Bonk in an SNES bundle last month, and I guess my expectations were high from the previous games. It's just ridiculously easy; I only died on the second to last boss, but I had amassed around 30 lives by that point, so it really didn't matter. Takes most of its elements from the third Bonk.

Ninja Spirit (TG-16) - Amazing game. Beat this on an emulator, and it pretty much secured the thought that I will buy a Turbografx when I save up a bit of money. The different weapons add a great strategic element to the game, while the powerups are perfectly balanced. With that said, the game plays more like a shmup, so expect to die. A lot.

Voodoo Vince (Xbox) - I continue my platformer kick with Voodoo Vince. I highly recommend this game. Although it's not as solid, it feels somewhat similar to Rayman 2. There is a lot of variety in gameplay, and the Voodoo doll element adds a unique element. It is a blast to play (took me around 8-9 hours); it's a bit on the easy side, but the difficulty does ramp up towards the end (at the carnival). Easily worth the $6 I spent on it at EB.

Syberia I & II (PC) - Graphically beautiful adventure games. Although technically two games, the second is simply (an inferior) continuation of the first game. I found the puzzles to be logical, to the point where I was able to complete the first game without help. The second game is a bit more frustrating, and the previously strong plot really starts to crumble. Overall, I did enjoy the game(s) as a whole, but I found the first entry to be a better experience.

Blade Runner (PC) - I had never watched the movie, but I picked the game up from a thrift for $2. Wow, for a game made in 1997, it's easily one of the most immersive I have played to this day. It is a fantastic adventure game with multiple endings and superb voice acting. It's unique in the sense that you really don't collect inventory; instead, you advance the story via uncovering clues through examining photos, etc. There is even some rudimentary gunplay thrown in for good measure. Highly recommended. It also ran off of Win XP without a hitch for me.

Others:
Sonic 1 (Genesis) - 1st time on original hardware. Stupid water level sucked, but otherwise fun.
Tony Hawk Underground 2 (Xbox) - Bought for $2. Not sure it was even worth that. I still think the series peaked with TH2 (on the DC for me).

I'm sure there are others, just tired of writing at this point. I'm close to finishing Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, and I love it. Buy it if you see it.

Got off work at 7:00 am this morning and didn't feel like going to bed, so I busted out the Gameboy Color. I ended up playing TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan since it was laying on top of all the other carts. Took me roughly 30 minutes to play through it and I only lost one turtle (Don right at the final boss, and only because I entered the battle with a little under half life). A very easy game. The first level is about 1/3 of the entire game, and the levels continually get shorter leading up to the Technodrome. I had a laugh at the end when the credits roll the epilogue and the game (referring to the disappearance of Shredder) say, "Vaporized to milk shake?" I have no idea what it refers to. The credits also show that only a handful of people designed the game, so you shouldn't expect to much if you play it.

Also beat Gold and Glory: Road to El Dorado (GBC) since I recieved it in the lot with the GBC. Not a bad platformer, but a lot of repetition, and also on the easy side. I managed to beat this one during a few sessions while the Minnesota Twins were getting their asses handed to them.

6. Psychonauts. Thought it was great. Didn't enjoy the Meat Circus very much because I forgot about the glide control that's necessary to beat it. I kept missing this one jump and almost reverted back to my childhood "This game cheats!" mode. I think I liked the Paranoid Milkman level best. I liked how the action wasn't rushed, but there was never any lull. Definitely one of the best games of the past generation, and the visuals hold up very well.

Man, I love that game. I beat it on a rental when it came out, and I've been wanting to buy it since then. I love the Milkman level, as well as the Matador one. The game is so well designed, and it has that unmistakable Tim Shaeffer humor in it.

Ms. Pac-man (SNES)
Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES)
Boogerman (GEN)
Ghoul Partol (SNES)

Now DKC3, and Boogerman I have beaten in the past. I put them in this forum just because its the first time I've beaten them this year. Ghoul Patrol I beat for the first time. I also guess I beat Ms. Pac-man I was playing then I get a screen of Mr and Ms Pacman sitting next to each other looking at the sun-set, Hell I didnt know there was an end to Ms. Pac-man.

Shining Force (Virtual Console)

Man I love that game. Bit easier than I remembered tho, but that might have been because I wasn't trying to be all clever and swapping out for the "best" characters for each map (like getting a bunch of flyers and foresty-types to overcome the movement penalties on the outdoor maps) so everyone got more exp. I also stuck with almost all the original people instead of trying to find better ones. The last swap I made was the first archer (Hans) for Domingo... Hans had started lagging behind Dianne and wasn't doing any damage at all after he got promoted.

Forgot how brutally bad your characters first suck after they get promoted, too. Had a problem for a while of having all my characters promote within 2 fights of each other.

Super Mario Bros. on the NES.

No, this isn't the first time I have ever beat that game. I bet I have beaten it at least 50 times or so, since the 1980's. Maybe more. Why did I list it then?

It is the first time I have beaten Super Mario Bros. (for the NES) in 2007. I don't play it nearly as much as I used to. What I try to do is run through it once every year or two, just to see if I still have the old "skills." Looks like I do.

I like to play straight through from 1-1 to 8-4 without any warps. It is the only way to truly explore this brilliant game. Playing it through again today for the first time in a year or two reminded me once again why this is one of the greatest video games of all time.

#30 - Shenmue (DC)

Beat the game yesterday after having quit it 5 years ago in disgust. Everything I hated about it then felt worse this time around. Control, writing, pacing, save system, etc were atrocious. Graphics are still fairly impressive despite some of their quirks (magically spawning NPCs and magically disappearing forklifts). Dream Passport disc is completely useless since you're unable to view information about your save data anymore :(

Since I didn't finish it the first time around, I'm starting all over again with Dragon Warrior 3 on the GBC. I got up to about lvl 43 on my first save, but I have no idea where I was or what I was doing as it was about 5 years ago, so I figured it would be better to start fresh.

7. Beyond Good and Evil (Xbox) Mixed feelings on this one. Jade is a great character, and I wish there were more like her, but the story left me flat. Seemed like it was all build up and didn't deliver many climactic moments. Characters were left undeveloped and most seemed superfluous. I actually got bored with the gameplay, especially in the Slaughterhouse level. Not a bad game by any stretch, but not quite the caliber of other underappreciated greats from last generation.

Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee (for the first time) for the Xbox.

#31 - Warship Gunner 2 (PS2)

Addictive as fuck. Seriously, the game is pure crack. The strategy isn't too deep and the R&D system begs for you to abuse and exploit the hell out of it. Fairly difficult on an initial playthrough, but you have the ability to raise/lower the difficulty before any mission in addition to being able to go back and replay previous missions any any point in time. Hell, there's even a New Game + option along with 3 slightly branching storylines and a couple of extra gameplay modes.

Incredibly fun and sadly overlooked.

I finally beat Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back for the NES. I got it when I was a kid and could never get past the post-Boba Fett Bespin level, and then some kid in middle school "borrowed" it and refused to give it back.

I got another copy a few months ago and was finally able to beat it! (admittedly with the help of a faq. :-/ ) Nevertheless, I felt very triumphant!

Just beat the tank game in WiiPlay in coop finally! Invisible tanks, damn that sucked. Actually I beat it on the first try :) It was the two before it (esp. the one with the 6 green-missile-bouncers) that gave us difficulty. That and the almost irresistible urge to send shells towards your coop player hehe.

Area 51 (PS2) - Probably the best looking FPS on the console with no slowdown to speak of. The story is ho-hum and reviewers seemed to bash David Duchovny for his voiceovers, although it really didn't bother me that much. Some of the combat was fairly intense, especially when fighting the Greys (aliens) with their damn combat shields. The game also packed a ton of extra content that I really haven't had a chance to look through yet.

Wii Play - Gold medalled all the events. Probably would have felt ripped off if the game didn't include an additional Wiimote.

Jackal (NES) - Took me about 5 times to finally beat it. The only real challenge is the final boss, but once you figure out a pattern to beat him you will probably only need a couple of lives. The game loops after the ending sequence and I had more lives than I started the game with so maybe I'll try to play through again and see if the difficulty or anything else has changed.

My financee bought me a Wii for my birthday (8/23), I've been playing quiet a bit of it although besides the pack-in and Wii Play the only game I've been persuades to buy was Zelda: Twilight Princess. Hopefully the will be pumping out some great games for it in the future.

#32 - Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (GBA)

This game has not aged well. When I last played it, I had just finished up the massive trainwreck of Metroid Fusion, so I came away fairly impressed. Now? Not so much. The pacing is awful, level design is fairly bland, and the bosses have at least twice as many hitpoints as they should (which just encourages tedious, heavy grinding).

Up there with SotN in quality. Fanfuckingtastic game. Wonderful castle design keeps the flow strong without feeling linear; you never really feel lost. Getting the "true" ending was too tricky for me, though. Had to use a FAQ for that part :(

#35 - Operation Vietnam (NDS)
Cannon Fodder + Ikari Warriors. Pretty fun game with lots of content (10 regular levels, 10 bonus levels, 1 super secret bonus level) and some decent action, but the lack of a strafe button and not having any mid-mission saves/check points really hurt it in the long run. Still had enough fun with it to clear it out 100%.

I beat my first longer RPG (30 to 50 hours long) in a LONG time. Before yesterday the last longer RPG I had beaten was Final Fantasy X the first month that it was out, so it's been a while since I actually finished one.
Yesterday with roughly 40 hours logged in I beat Kingdom Hearts 2, for the Playstation 2. I only got the normal ending because I didnt complete 100% of Jiminy Cricket's journal (I was close with 88%) So I may go back and finish the last 18% to get the alternate ending. Overall I really enjoyed the game from finish to end and was satisfied with the whole experience.
I own and played the original Kingdom Hearts but never beat it. In the original I made it to Maleficent when she turned into a dragon. From what I remember and the way I am with RPG's I lost a hand-full of times against Maleficent and just gave up. I think now that I've finished and enjoyed the sequal I'm going to go back and try and beat the original again.

Beating one of these always gives me a feeling of accomplishment even though I should probably feel bad about all that time in front of the television. I spent hundreds of hours playing Oblivion before I beat it a few months ago, and before that I think the last rpg I beat was Skies of Arcadia two or three years ago.

Knights of the Old Republic (Xbox) - Wow, what an incredible game. I was hooked from beginning to end. As a matter of fact, the wife was half the country away last week so for the entire duration she was gone I sat around in my underpants, drank beer, and played KOTOR. I chose to go through as a light side character, but can see the definate appeal to go back through and be very very evil. The plot...is freakin' sweet, the plot twist was totally unexpected, and damn cool. Xbox - Stubbs the Zombie :hail:

I've been looking for this one for a little while, and I happily bought it up for 12.99. For the ~7/10 reviews it got, I was remarkably surprised. The game is fantastic. Outstanding concept, soundtrack, atmosphere. The gameplay is varied enough to keep me interested, and it's just fun. Yah, it's a bit on the short side, but who cares? Quality should always be the focus.

I want to try coop on it now...too bad the only guy I know who would be interested in it is going to school in Edmonton.

#36 - Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (NDS)

Castle design was a bit disappointing after how amazingly well done Aria was, but the soul fusion thingy for weapons was cool as hell. Touch screen gimmick really hurts the game, unfortunately. The whole sealing concept is terribly tacked on and the rare times where you have to erase blocks to move on are more annoying than anything. The only time where the touchscreen was used well was when you were doing the room-rearranging puzzle.

Well, being able to tap on the point to teleport to was also pretty neat.

#37 - Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (NDS)

Massive disappointment. Basic, overly linear level designs with a grind-happy focus (unless you wanted seriously drawn out boss fights on par with Circle of the Moon) in addition to a fairly weaksauce quest system. Wonderful graphics and the bonus dungeon that you can unlock to fight bosses from previous games completely rocked, but good lord was the rest a damn hollow shell of the previous two games.

Actually, the game had a lot in common with Circle of the Moon. Sad. :(

So my rankings for the GBA/NDS Castlevania games would go:

Aria of Sorrow > Dawn of Sorrow > Portrait of Ruin > Circle of the Moon > Harmony of Dissonance

...with a fairly sizable gap between Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin.

I finally got a city going on Sim City 4 without using cheats. I have always sucked at those games.

Well, there is a big difference between beating a particular game and beating the crap out of it. In my case I always strive to do the latter. Just beating games isn't nearly enough, especially if I've got a score to settle. I strive to to make each game experience absolute humiliation, but fortunately for games, they have no feelings lol.

I often go out of my way to thoroughly dominate the games that have given people so many problems. So you can call me the classic video game hit man, but without pay. I clean up the classic gaming streets for free.

2007 has been a highly inspirational and overall awesome year thus far. I had stopped gaming competitively for nearly an entire year before making an unexpected comeback in April. A chance meeting with FAQ writer extraordinaire Brian Sulpher, gave me new gaming life. Since then, I haven't looked back and have been taking on some of the most frustrating challenges, in order to prove that virtually anything is possible. Here is a quick list of the games that have been taken to school thus far:

Bad Street Brawler (NES)
1.Finished without dying

Godzilla (NES)
1.All in one shot (same play-through) without dying in just over two hours and a half of playing time [what a bore lol!]

Gun.Smoke (NES)
1.Without ever buying any items without dying

2.Without ever picking up/using any items, except for the Wanted posters of course and bags of money the odd time or two, while using five continues.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (NES)
-Finished without dying while using the warp found in Wave 1 that takes Indy to Wave 7, if he enters the appropriate door.

Last Action Hero (NES)
1.Finished without dying

NARC (NES)
1.Finished without dying and had gotten up to the second last level while only being hit twice

Power Punch II (NES)
1.All in one shot (same play-through) with a 13-0 13KO record with all first round victories and without ever getting knocked down

2.Finished with a maximum Final Rating of 200 with a 13-0 13KO record (my greatest feat in this game by far, since it is extremely difficult to have a perfect fight against Fly-Mo to reach 200. It would be much easier to lose some fights earlier on and beat certain opponents twice, in order to double up on points.

+more individual fight wins and the like

The Punisher (NES)
1.Beat Kingpin with the supergun without dying (this weapon considerably slows down Frank Castle's foot speed, but is extremely powerful and can destroy Kingpin in the least amount of time)

Renegade (NES)
1.Finished on difficulty Level-3 without dying (I definitely got lucky with this one lol!)

Rocky (Sega Master System)
1.Finished in about four minutes with all wins coming by way of TKO in the first round

2.Finished while skipping all of the training sessions, while still managing to beat all of the opponents in the first round

3.Finished game with a 0% Rocky (chose to train, but did not throw any punches, this is worse than skipping training altogher oddly enough)

+more individual fight wins and the like

Street Fighter 2010 The Final Fight (NES)
1.Finished without dying in less than twenty-five minutes

2.Finished without dying without ever technically using any items (a full energy capsule was accidentally picked up near the end, but Ken did not make use of it, as he would have still had an energy unit remaining had he not picked up the item)

The Terminator (NES)
1.Finished without dying

Terminator 2 Judgment Day (NES)
1.Finished without dying

I am currently trying to clean up the boxing scene on the classic systems. Riddick Bowe Boxing and Foreman For Real for the Super Nintendo are currently next in line, since no one seems to want to play them lol.

A lot of the gaming footage that I have recorded on VHS has already been posted, or will soon be posted, on Youtube if all goes well. shincyriades has been uploading them and we are working together to provide the gaming public with inspirational videos that prove that if one truly believes in his or her self, is patient enough and has the desire to succeed, then just about anything can be achieved.

shincyriades is also going to be trying his hand at various Neo Geo games, so fans of that particular system might want to check out those videos once they are up.

I don't remember what I finished earlier this year, but in the past month finished off 2 NES classics: Metroid and Faxanadu.

Does T2 on NES have that impossible truck level like it does in the arcade? I can't imagine someone beating that level w/o dying, in fact I don't think I've ever beaten that level (although I'm not very good at games).

Last night I beat Winback for the PS2. Also within the last few weeks I've beaten Kingdom Hearts 2, The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. I'm not sure if I posted the later two in this thread.

#38 - Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (Gamecube)

Some of the Sonic and Shadow levels were pretty cool, but everything else was fairly subpar (especially the tedious Rogue and Knuckles stages). Shame they didn't bother to fix up the camera at all for the Gamecube release, but at least they didn't botch anything that worked in the process of porting it.

No way in hell will I go back for all 180 Sonic Medallions. I'm done with the game once and for all. Let's hope Sonic Heroes pans out better.

Just beat Shining Force III! Decent enough game, but DAMN I get enough political intrigue crap playing every other tactical RPG... give me the good ole straight-fantasy story from SF1 & 2 anyday.

Fun battles, though! Some real clever stuff. The optional characters were significantly harder to find than in SF1 and 2, I actually didn't get a single one of them =/ I ran into 2 of them but couldn't figure out how to get them in my party. Oh well, I still finished the last battle with just the mercenaries :)

13th game beat on the year:

- 9/30 Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - Starts out slow, up until just past your first visit to the Forsaken Fortress. Had to get this game done before Phantom Hourglass' arrival. Actually enjoyed most aspects of this game, a good play for any fan of the series. Upon conquering this game I actually find my self even more pumped for Phantom Hourglass.
