Its all good... Were all up for finding them variant covers... As some people are close to complete PSOne NTSC/U libraries ::cough:: Dangerboy, 40 games to go ::cough:: and they are gonna need to find some reason to continue to hunt for PSOne stuff ;)

I wonder... do the "completist" collectors seek out Demo Discs and Jampacks and PS Underground and mail-away demos as well?

@_@

Dangerboy

Spooie: Some people do. I don't kow if I will or not. Except maybe for the demo that had Metal SLug original on it.

Ah yes... my brother has the underground disc with the original Metal Slug on it. Too bad that one never came out here.

kevincure
03-04-2004, 04:46 PM
Titan AE also had a demo and wasn't released; I think I was told that there's a demo disc with the "missing Madden" on it as well, and there's definitely a PS Underground disc with Net Yaroze games. My pdf does list demo discs, as well as Star Gladiator having a normal and an FE cover, as spooie mentioned. Spooie - throw me an IM at zkman01 and I'll IM you the pdf; they're supposed to bump up my webspace soon and I'll reload the file then.

This seems like a good place to ask this: Are they still making new ps1 games? I could have sworn I saw MLB 2005 on a storeshelf recently.

PapaStu
03-04-2004, 08:38 PM
They are still trickling out... and i mean trickling... They will probably make them until the end of the year, releasing budget crap for the most part... but who knows... EA tends to be the only US publisher to keep pushing their sports titles when everyone else has long gone home... I havnt seen it out yet myself, but id not be surprised in the least....

upon investigation you sir are correct...

I've got a question about Strider 2 listed on the site here...

http://www.digitpress.com/lists/playstation.htm

It's listed as a scarcity of "1", which I assume if the most common right behind "0"... correct? I'm curious to know how scarcity is measured here, by the number of copies pressed into circulation, or the number of copies most easily available at stores or on eBay and whatnot.

The reason I ask is, back when Strider 2 was released, I recieved it as a Christmas Present and of course, noticed that the Strider 2 disc was printed as Strider 1, and Strider 1 as Strider 2. I thought it might have been a random error, but I had a friend who had also recieved recieved Strider 2 as a Christmas present. He decided to call up Capcom USA to see if he could exchange it for a fixed version. Capcom's rep told him there weren't any fixed versions, and the game only had 1 wave of releases. It didn't sell enough to warrant a re-issuing and Capcom didn't make any money off the release.

Further discovery at various websites, such as IGN.com, who covered the Strider disc printing errors said that the single wave of release was less than 50,000 copies. And another site, which the name of escapes me, mentioned that only 30,000 or so of those were actually distributed to stores by Christmas (I can only assume Capcom sold some on their own site, because they had it for nearly 2 years at 12.95, and eventually the others were distributed later on to clear backstock or such).

But I wonder, isn't 50,000 copies a rather low print run? I know that according to old issues of Next Gen, or EGM or Gamepro, back by the end of the year of Resident Evil's release, 1 in 7 PSX owners had one. And it was the first PSX title, to my knoweledge, to sell over a million copies in the US. Yet, that has a "3" Scarcity level. Much like, say, MegaMan 8 which I could find all over for ages and even more later when it was re-released in the Greatest Hits line.

So... I'm curious, exactly how is the scarcity scale measured? Cause I would assume a million game seller like Resident Evil would be more common than a game with a single, limited print run like Strider 2.

If anyone can clear my mind and enlighten me on the process, I'd love to know. Thanks.

;)

Speaking not for the PSX, but on other systems, rarity is based on a number of factors. 1 is the lowest it can go. Game stores, eBay, hints at actual production runs, popularity (i.e. how many copies are 'liquid', this is used to a lesser degree), common sense, and a few DP secrets.

50k is low, yes, but I'd gather it may be the kind of game you can walk into any game store, and more often than not, it'll come up. The RE they may be talking about could be the longbox version, which you don't see that often.

But I shouldn't be talking for them, just my guess.

dave

spooie
03-06-2004, 01:21 PM
It's possible, since Strider 2 did NOT sell at all. Chances are, you can probably find it all over used, and probably some new still. I guess people just weren't interested in a sprite-driven 2.5D game. But it was the long box of RE that sold the million, though.

So what does the "O" on the scale mean?

PapaStu
03-06-2004, 05:49 PM
the 0 is in reference to an indecision in its rarity, or in other words, an unknown until they release DP8 later this year, which will have everything all updated in it.

Being a PSOne hunter, rarity is gawd awfuly subjective... some of it is market push (what game stores ram down the throats of the masses), or ebay push (look at DBZ:FB)... And even if a game only had a 30k or 50k release, it doesnt mean that its automaticlly going to be on the top of the list of must owns.. then you need to start factoring in gameplay and how franchised it is, who developed and published it. Some of it is just whats hard to get in your area. I live in the Bay Area, there are more technologically savy people here than say in bumpkinville, Georgia (this is a hypothetical example city mind you) and more money to kick around, so there are a gaggle more games, and often the rarer ones to boot.

I dont see Strider 2 all over the place when I hunt, and thats partially becuase it DIDNT sell. But if i do see it, i dont think that it would warrant much more than 10-15 depending on the store. And that to me isnt RARE but a moderately hard thing to find, all be it not impossible..

Welcome to the fickle fickle creature that is collecting PSOne games, when the system sold how many units stateside, was out for how long, and there are how many games for it???? @_@

Some of this crazyness just doesnt make a ton of sense, but hey, thats what makes it so fun LOL

Dangerboy
03-06-2004, 06:38 PM
PapaStu brought up an interesting point about the game's availabilty relating to the Rarity factor. I don't care how few DBZ:GT there were printed; if I can go on ebay and see 10 at any given time, I'm not that impressed.

Now, try typing in "The Divide: Enemies Within" or "Silverload" and see how many catches you get. These games, the no mass ads, no brand name, no recognition in any way, shape or form; the games that nobody wanted at launch: THOSE are the games that become the ultimate hunts.

Another rwason why I enjoy hunting and playing through the oddball games. I want to give the programmers some karmic payback knowing that *somebody* took a look at their work, regardless of how bad/obscure it was.

spooie
03-07-2004, 01:31 AM
Okay. I think I got it. So the rarity guide is based more around how hard to find something is and how much money someone will pay, than it is about how many copies are actually out there.

:)

Speaking of The Divide: Enemies Within... I saw a bunch of those on eBay, NEW/SEALED, around November for about 7 bucks. I guess I should have bid on one, huh?

@_@

So whats anyone heard about Robo Pit 2???? Just got myself a copy of the game today, having never seen it anywhere else before, in fact I didnt even realise that it was released...

How IS the game... and what is it? :P

BTW... I was checking out Telegames' website and noticed they have a PSX game coming out this month called "Rascal Racers", as well as GBA to PSX conversions of Soccer Kid and Santa Claus Saves the Earth coming out sometime later.

Has anyone spotted Rascal Racers anywhere?

http://www.telegames.com/rascal.htm

Dangerboy
03-07-2004, 01:48 PM
Not yet, at least around here...and Santa? I need to add ANOTHER FRIGGIN GAME TO THE LIST?

PapaStu
03-07-2004, 02:42 PM
Robo-Pit 1 is an earlier title (but when it came out im not exactly sure) which i have, but I am missing the back insert, so i do not count it in my collection. I was thinking of picking one of them up thats on ebay, to get it out of the way, but i dunno.

Checked on IGN, GameSpot, GameStop, and EB and got nothing for the game. Makes this a little more annoying is that the copies on ebay, either showed a japanese cover or showed a picture of cover W/O the title and all of that, and not showing the game itself (which just pisses me off)

I want Santa Claus Saves the Earth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And ive not seen Rascal Racers either...

Oh and all of the 430 PSOne games i have are all brilliant masterpieces.. :::points at Army Men games, Mary Kate & Ashley, Hooters Road Race:::

Its because of the name, something so bad has to be good in some form or another. SHUSH! dont ruin it (i saw a few screen shots, and it looked horrible but thats besides the point)

The Manimal
03-07-2004, 07:03 PM
Were all those ARMY MEN games any good? I have no interest in them currently, unless they are good and someone recommends them. Just judging from the idea of the game, I think they sound pretty dumb.

kevincure
03-07-2004, 11:21 PM
I'll add MLB 05 and Robo Pit 2 to the list; also I'll make sure to keep an eye out for those Telegames titles. The PSX games keep coming!

PapaStu
03-07-2004, 11:47 PM
Army Men 3D (the first one) is pretty good. And the Air Attack one is very good. Every other one is just another poor rehash of the 3D one, getting staler and staler with each game after it. On the PS2 Army Men RTS (Real Time Strategy) and Air Attack 2 are both good.

Okay...so I posted in the Sony PlayStation forums of "How many game syou have?" and this person comes back and tells me there are 1500 (not 1270+) games for the system. I checked Sony's list and they seemed to have cleaned up, but between Queen, Kevin, Papa, myself and others, I can't imagine we'd miss TWO HUNDRED + titles. Unless, he's counting Lightspan (asked, waiting for response...)

Let's see what he replies with...I'll keep you updated.

Jason

Queen Of The Felines

If he counted announced games and those shown at various expos (but ended up not getting released) then I can see where he got the 1500+ number from. There's a LOT of proto/rumor mill titles (for obvious reasons). :)

Or he could be counting cover variations too. This should be interesting.

Even counting the "variants" i dont think that it would add the 200+ that we seem to be missing....Ive been trying my damnest to stump us all with games, the best ive been able to do has been getting Robo-Pit 2 it seems before most anyone else.... No way that we've missed 200 general release games...

::thinking outloud::::
The Longbox to Jewelcase variants... +
The Alternate covers/Occasional game variant (ie, Lost World Jurassic Park) +
The Lightspan games +
that would be the 200 right there

ORRRRR - I think this might be what he's thinging.

Dude is counting the SLUS#'s as though they were the "game count", because if thats the case, then were sitting at 1560ish not counting the SCUS#'s [which are another few hundred in disc counts...SCUS 94100-SCUS 946XX/ or even possibly as high as 949XX] Though all these numbers are based on title registration and total disc counts with Sony and not actually released game counts (Example FF VIII SLUS 00892, 00908-10)

Quick reference checks... what are the SCUS#'s for Adventure Of Lomax, Beyond The Beyond, Crash Bandicoot, Discworld 2, Hotshots Golf 2, Jersey Devil, Jet Moto, Jet Moto 2, Lemmings 3D, Raiden Project, Speed Punks, Wild ARMS
The numbers I have listed in my Excel sheet seem high based on their release dates, and compared with other SCUS releases. A little help to confirm would be appreciated since my PSOne games are at my parents house.

One final beg for help, whats the SLUS# for Tall:Infinity and who published it (my excel sheet has a hole that needs filling)

The 1500+ figure probably comes from the fact that the Sony number on licensed games are in the SLUS-1500s. FIFA Soccer 2004 has the number SLUS-1578. With released games, a few unreleased games, some demos including the Official Playstation Magazine Discs and the lightspans, I have a list of 1614 discs. Pull out the demos, lightspans, unreleased games and disc 2+ for multidisc games, I end up with about 1300 known released games.
And that is considering my list is missing some new games and there are some games I am missing information on.

oops....missed some of PapaStu reply on the SLUS #s.

Here is some info:

Name Year Publisher Sony # UPC #

Chronicles of the Sword Disc 2 1996 Psygnosis SCUS-94701 11719-47002

I think that Eggs may be the only BB exclusive... for I dont remember them being all hot to trot in snagging exclusive PSOne games (Hell, i didnt even know that Eggs was) but i knew all about the N64 stuff.... this makes me think that they didnt do many more than one or two in total.

Didn't know you guys were in Chicago; I was in Evanston until last Tuesday and in the South Side until yesterday.

As for the 1500 SKUs, there are at least 200 demo discs + 1280 or so games and 80 or so Lightspan games, so the total is somewhere in the 1500s for official releases.

25 dollars is probably closer to the going rate right now, but it has sold for 50 in the past. Not a bad game either.

Yeah. I got it mostly because i remember playing it on a friend's 3DO back in those days.

When i saw the rarity list i got like: DAMN! :D

Anyway, i never buy games thinking on profit later. I buy them for me :)

Pretty sweet, but I think I like the GT4 Prologue even better - I can not wait for the game. I think I'm going to have to pick up that slick wheel (with the 900 degree rotation and everything) that's being released. Big speakers + my projector at like 90" diagonal + GT4 + sick wheel = damn awesome.

Kevincure: The only way I'd plunk down for those $150 sterring wheels is if it cuaranteed me I could pop a wheelie in my desk chair ;D

PapaStu

Hey Dangerboy, you can pop-a-wheelie over this game that ive got for you... Its some sort of Disney Dancing game thing.... They all think that they are at a Rave, but its really just a Mix kinda thing..... PM me some address info.... and it will be sent out Tomorrow.....

Also I went to Target to grab a present for a friend and hit up the PSOne games.... In the blowout budget section included American Pool and All Star Racing 2, both ghetto fabulous Mad Duck games at the blowout price of 3.24... Needless to say that they came home, as well as a lovely bundle pack that had Motocross Mania 2 and ATV Mania for 14... Im starting to buy up this ghetto goodness, cause i just have this feeling that this crap is going to disapear sooner than alot of the other PSOne stuff because of the weird print runs and availibility.

Anyone have any updates on these games? I want to bring my needed list up to 100% correct to see how close I really am to finishing off the library:

- Dino Master
- Ghostbusters
- NeoPets (Was listed...now missing?)
- Soccer Kid (Coming Soon, Telegames)
- Here comes Santa Claus (Coming Soon, Telegames)

None have been released in the US yet. The first two at least have PAL releases, though I would doubt a US release. The Telegames are almost certainly coming. Neopets has been "coming soon" for a year now, so it may have vanished to vaporware.

Someone was talking about Neopets having been canceled for the PSOne and pushed to the PS2, but ive seen nothing to either confirm or deny...

Saw this sneak by on our release lists yesterday:
Cat in the Hat pushed back till April 20th, and now there is a Driver Compilation coming out.

Variant possibility:
I just noticed on my Gundam BA 2, on the spine they spell it "Gundum" ;D

PapaStu

Hahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!! Thats hilarious... I'll check my copy tomorrow, when i go home. Sounds like the error with City Crisis for the PS2 where they just forgot to put the title on the spine of the case

Okay, a little note comparison.

While at work today, I deciced to look up CT Special Forces 1,2, and NeoPets. All SKUS display a "Discontinued" Description, so phooey.

I wander over to Game Stop, and they can't look up release dates by system, only by game title. I tell them the titles, and zip, zilch, nada.

So...these are the games that seem pretty much gone:

- CT Special Forces 1
- CT Special Forces 2
- Ghostbusters
- NeoPets
- Dino Master (spotted in Target.com, not there anymore)

Confirm, deny? Any help at all?

Well after spending a little time hungting... heres what im seeing (or not in these cases)

NeoPets: Only info on Sony's site is from last years San Diego Comic Con, saying that they were previewing it along with a bunch of PS2 games (all of which are out, SOCOM 2, EyeToy, Arc The Lad, Downhill Domination, Jak 1+2, R&C 2, and FF XI). IGN has nothing, GameSpot doesnt either.

CT Special Forces 1+2: There was nothing on IGN or Gamestop, except a 2004 release date,
http://psx.ign.com/objects/655/655847.html, has a few screen shots and a little talk about the game that says 2004 as a release

I got nothing at all on Dino Master, and Ghostbusters...

Rascal Racers has been released..keep your eyes peeled! O_O

PapaStu

Shit..... I'll keep an eye out.

So if any of us sees them, should we buy more than one for the other PSOne collectors here? Im up for it should i find it. Anyone else? Just let me know...

Dangerboy

If it's $9.99 titel I can snag a few myself to help distribute amongst the insane..i mean collector's.

Oh yes, got in a pre-played Gundam BA 2....there's a variant typo. The one traded in was correctly spelled. No book though =/

New information duly noted.

Also, I've reuploaded the pdf to:

http://people.bu.edu/cure/playstation.pdf.

I haven't heard about CT Special 1 being cancelled, but I'd say the others are unlikely to be released.

PapaStu

Remembering to look at my copy of Gumdum 2, mine also has the typo variant. I got mine the day it came out, which means that the inital release was the errored run, and there was a correction run at some point. Great, chock another variant up for the hunt. Now which one is rarer?

@ Dangerboy: Yah, if you see this Rascal Racers out there and its cheap, pick one up for me. I will also do the same if possible, but if for some reason its more, I will be willing to snatch up one or two for the insane, Just drop me a line if anyone wants one, so i know to keep a look out for a specific number.

@Kevin: The site says that the file can not be found on the site. :(

PapaStu: Kevincure's punctuation demon came back. Click the link, then backspace once on the address to get the goods. Once again Kev has kept us well fed.

Also, I'm currently in the middle of an aucion on ebay that if won, will snag one of the rarest import games ever for the PSX. Drool. 8-)

I also may have found the rare variant I was looking for in an auction lot, but we'll wait and see before making any claims on that one. God I hope he ships priority :D

Yup, the board automatically makes an http:// into a link, and isn't smart enough to realize that the period at the end probably isn't part of the link. So here goes once more, sans period

Yah!!!! Thanks Kevin. :D

So Dangerboy, what game is it??? HuhHuhHuh??? Now you've got me all curious, the only one i can think of is the Jewel case variant for MK3 (or 4) that you cant ever truly find anywhere.
