I hope everything is okay though.

Yeah, is he allright? No second game posted yet....
I DID just notice the scores had been posted for last week, though. :embarrassed:
What were the matchups this time, if you would be so kind?
Note to self -- beware Mr Food Monster, he is on a RAMPAGE! X_x

Yeah I dont know where Gapporin is either. If we dont hear from him in the next few hours, Im going to go ahead and pick the other game as well.
And yeah I'll post the matchups. Speaking of matchups, do people still have a problem with this system? Would you prefer I post some matchups for this week instead? How about getting some challenges going on again?

I must have had InsaneDavid this week :(
Only 2 people beat my Cameltry score, and only one of those 2 beat by Gunsmoke score, and I ended up with 2 losses some luck I've got :(

Howdy. Since Gapporin is MIA, I figured I needed to pick another ROM ASAP or we were all going to be SOL PDQ. Go to the sticky to check it out.

Cool, it's retro week! I love both games but I don't do to well at either, so my scores will calm down this week. I had a supremely lopsided week last week, but I pwned you all at Cameltry. 8-) I would have done a lot worse if it had been Food Fight. LOL

Crapcakes.
I am so sorry about what happened this week. I had to leave on short notice for the entire week, so my mind was preoccupied with that, and not with the MAME Tournament. I think it was around Wednesday that I thought to myself, "Hey, I wonder what game I'll pick for this week...waitaminute, did I pick a game this week?...crap."
So, once again, I am very sorry about that. To make up for it, I'll pick two games next week!
No, that won't work.
I dunno. I'll give everybody in the tournament a meseta. There. That sounds about right.

Uh, the Asteroids rom will not work with my Mame (MAME32 0.95). I found a revision 2, and it does work. Can I use that or is it very different from the original?

07-15-2005, 03:51 PM
Yea, same here, we need a different Asteroids ROM, won't work with the MAME we're supposed to play with :)

Figured I'd submit my scores now as high temperatures mean its rarely dropped below 90 degrees all week (even at 4am) where my MAME v0.95-able computer is. Caught a break tonight to get in some play time. Two excellent games, I've never been very good at Asteroids but I was shocked at how rusty I was at Rally-X, one of my all time favorite coin-ops. :/ My scores will reflect this.

Hey guys, once again I am on the road in Charlotte, NC a couple thousand miles away from home. I was able to put mame on the pc I'm currently using.. but can someone post the email address we're supposed to send the scores to again? I have zero records of anything here :D

07-17-2005, 04:06 PM
Well, I'm back to doing badly here. I guess I've never played any Asteroids revisions, this was too fast and swervy for me. LOL But I never did make it to the 2nd maze in Rally-X in the arcades, so I did good there. My MS Sidewinder pad gave out on me today. That's good though, I never did like that slanted D-pad. The only backup I had was a PC Propad 4 (4!) which never worked right with MAME. I took a chance and it worked perfectly. The first game of Rally-X I played was my high score, so I hope the MS Sidewinder burns in hell. :devilish:

Sent mine in a few hours ago as well...nothing stellar here. 23K on Asteroids (believe it or not it was an all time Personal Best, I've never been good at Asteroids). And 32K on Rally-X, first time I've ever passed the first board.
I can say with some pride (even if I don't make the playoffs or whatever) that every game we have played I have broken my previous personal best score. :D

Including this week, there are three weeks left in the regular season. I thought there were only two, but I forgot that one week was a fake week. So there will be a total of 14 weeks, and we are into week 12.
We lost another player this week, so there are 10 players in each ocnference right now. The top 6 playes in each conference will advance to the playoffs, and the winner of each division will recieve a first round bye. With three weeks (6 games) left, everyone should still be in the running for a playoff spot, so hopefully wel'll see some pretty competetive scores in these last weeks.

Well, I've been *THINKING* about transforming the MAME league into an emulation league after the chamionships are over. That might give it more variety and keep it interesting. We would have regular, meseta-based tournaments, and eash tournament would feature one specific system. So there would be a SNES tourney, a NES tourney, a TG16 tourney, etc, etc. This sounds cool, and it would keep us from stepping on the toes of the Monday morning MAME club any more than we already have.
Everyone feel free to post your thoughts on this here, whether you're in the league right now or not.

Anyway, good pics for this week's game.
The Japanese game -- that reminds me of a cross between Pac Man and Arkanoid. :D You're running around in the car picking up dots to clear the mazes and also getting power capsules with abilities like you would get in the latter game.
Frogger I'm pretty good at, so I just have to hope for some good games.
Who did we lose this week?

We lost AdamG. No scores submitted for 2 weeks, no explanation as to why, and he's still posting so it's not like he's not around. Hate to kick out a DP mod, but I set the rules at the beginning of the tourney.

Different platform leagues sounds like a great idea. Then you can have like a Marathon tournament with the top players from each, kinda like a pentathlon or decathlon (however many different platforms there are) where there would be a game from each platform to declare the outright champion for the year, like the DP olympics or something.
fergojisan

I like the various platform tournament idea a lot. I'm not sure if one game would be better, or stick to the original two. Sometimes I don't have time for any, unfortunately. But I do like the idea of playing a different game or two every week. I was planning on joining the MAME club after this was over, because I think I would miss the weekly pick(s). So count me in if you decide to continue!

Well, no matter what I am going to continue the league in one form or another, but either way you should definitley join the MAME club! That gives you a chance to read and write reviews on the weekly picks, plus you get to pick the game one week.

I think it's funny that everyone is so gung-ho about new league ideas when we're barely struggling to retain half of our original membership for this league, and it's still the regular season!
If people get bored with just MAME games when there are thousands and thousands to choose from, I don't think adding more systems/games is going to be the answer.
In retrospect, two games a week may have been a little much for some of the more busy people, and the longer it goes, the harder it is to retain people's interests. Also, selecting obscure games sounds like a good idea on paper because it introduces people to games they may not have otherwise seen. But in reality, these same obscure games turn a lot of people off.
Maybe shorter system-specific leagues with only one game a week is the answer. I'd be all for a 10-game/10-week NES Decathlon for example, but all the members would have to be in on game selection. (Mind you, I still plan on winning this league, I'm just coasting into the playoffs right now ;) )

I understand what you're saying, but the league seems to have some die-hard participants, and we may find that after the tournament is over, we will pick up some new players.
From now on the league will just be tournaments (no regular seasons) so they will go quickly, which should keep people from getting bored.

Two EXCELLENT picks this week! I just submitted my scores, earlier than I would have liked to however. Figured I might as well do so now while I have the chance as my computer may not even boot tomorrow let alone load MAME. The other game -- quite fun, too bad this one stayed in Japan only. I got around 55k on this one.

Gah, I suck at frogger. I didn't do half bad on raimais though, mainly due to the fact that I somehow ended up warping into a boss fight with a giant mantis, the defeat of which earned me a nice 20,000 points! :D

I am editing the scoreboard right now, so by the time most of you read this, it should be posted.
We lost two players this week, Lady Jaye and hydr0x. Because of this, we are down to 9 players in each conference. Therefore the playoff format will be as follows: The top 6 players in each conference will advance to the playoffs, with the division winners recieving a first round bye. It will be single-elimination, and we will probably play one game every 2 or three days, unless there are major objections. I would like to see the playoffs be more fast paced than the regular season. INP files will be required.

If you are above the dotten line, you're in. Below the dotted line, and you have some work to do. I want to point out though that NO ONE has been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs yet. Dr Morbis has won his division at this point, but the other three divisional titles are still up for grabs. Since all of the players left at this point have a shot at the playoffs, I hope that I won't see any more drop-outs.
I would also like to point out that point total is making a difference as far as playoff contention goes. Remember that you can still submit missing scores and have them added to your point total, but they will have no effect on your win/loss record. I reccomend that you take a look at your situation, and see if submitting some missing scores might help you out. If you want to know what scores you are missing, PM me and I will tell you. Don't e-mail me, as I only check this account about twice per week.
This week and next week, I will be posting matchups during the week. Matchups will be randomly chosen using slips of paper and a hat. I figure you guys should know who you are up against ahead of time so you can strategize.
That is all.

Three days sounds fine but two is pushing it. With no AC in my computer room (err.. the room my decently powered PC is in) I'm limited to when I can boot up. Three days per playoff game shouldn't be a problem at all however.

So how many weeks are left before the playoffs?
And I would second the suggestion that playoff games be given three days. I know I work 40 hours a week plus other stuff. Maybe we can have one playoff round go from Sunday to Tuesday night, and then the second one from late Wed night to Sat.
It looks like I won all four of my matchups, somehow. @_@ :D

Can I ask why I am being rewarded with 2 ties for not being able to submit scores this week? I didnt have time to play this week, and I don't think its fair to people who submit their scores on time and get 2 losses.
I believe you're still scheduling by when a player submits a score. If 4 people don't submit than you are scheduling them against each other, therefore giving them 2 ties apiece. If I'm wrong let me know. If you don't submit a score you should be penalized with 2 losses and it would probably be better to reward the players who get their scores in 1st by playing against them. I have no problem with you taking my ties away, turning them to losses and giving the wins to someone who earned them.

There are two weeks (4 games) left in the regular season. The two that you should be playing now, and two more next week. That brings the grand total of games up to 25.
3 days for the playoffs is probably what I will do. Then the Playoffs will last 2 weeks, and should end right before CGE.

Your assumption is correct. I did it this way to help out players who couldnt submit scores for a particular week for one reason or another, like vacation or whatever. The penalization for not submitting scores is that you will be removed from the league if you do it two weeks in a row, and if you don't subit scores enough non-consecutive times, you aren't going to be able to rack up enough wins to make much difference.
The problem with your suggestion of first submission plays last submission is this: I don't think a single week has gone by where I didn't have at least one player who didn't submit scores. If I did what you suggest, there would be someone who always submitted their score super-early, like on Tuesday or Wednesday, so that they would be sure to play the flunkie and get the automatic wins.
Once the emulation league starts, it's going to be all tournament style, so I won't have to deal with this kind of scheduling anymore.

Chris
Chris I understand where your coming from, but there are people who legitimatley played the game who are getting 2 losses for having the misfortune of playing against someone who scored better. They made an effort, I couldnt, but I still basically got rewarded. Unless someone couldnt play a game because of a ROM problem or something a person who doesnt submit should get losses. You can only penalize people who actually want to stay in the league. If people are getting kicked out for not submitting, they had probably lost interest anyway.

But I can't keep track of people's reasons for not submitting scores. I don't see how taking two ties can be seen as a reward. It's completely neutral. It doesn't help you. Players are ranked by number of wins. A tie is almost as bad as a loss.
I put this system into place so that people would be able to take vacations or miss a week for whatever reason without getting totally screwed.
I have recieved several e-mails from people saying that they are going on vacation and can't submit scores or whatever, and they are always concerned about their league status. And what's funny is that they think that taking two ties instead of two losses is somehow unfair to everyone else, but the same person will have no problem asking me to let them turn in their scores late, which I see as being totally unfair.
What this all stems from is me trying to be a nice guy. Here's the bottom line: What I should do is give everyone two losses when they don't submit their scores. You forfeited the game, you lose. End of discussion. It doesn't matter if it's because you didn't feel like playing that week, or if it's because your mother died. That's what I SHOULD do.
BUT
No one ever e-mails me and says "Hey Jibba, I'm going on vacation the week of blabbablabba, but that's my fault. I'm just letting you know so that you won't schedule me against anyone. Just mark me down for two losses and I'll play extra hard the following week to try and bring my win/loss back up." No one. It's always either they want to submit their scores late, or they want me to choose the games ahead of time so that they can do it befoore they leave. They always want me to bend the rules for them. So I worked out this system, where you just get two ties for not submitting. It doesn't help you or hurt you. That way, I don't have to bend the rules, and you don't feel like you are being fucked. If someone is habitually not submitting scores and abusing the system, then how are they going to get into the playoffs? You aren't going to make it if you have 6 or 8 ties when the regular season is over.
Look Trippps, I know you are trying to be fair and be a gentleman here and all, but I think the system works the way it is. If you REALLY want me to change two of your ties to losses, I could do that, but it isn't really fair unless I do it to everyone. Someone else shouldn't make the playoffs because you insisted on taking two losses thhat you shouldn't have.
If you want to keep discussing this, then we can do so. If anyone else has a suggestion or opinion, feel free to do so as long as it is in a civilized manner.

Cool, looks like I won all but one of my matchups. Although, this week could hurt me, a game that I simply cant controll be it mouse/gamepad/keyboard, and a game I blow at. Well, I'll do my best.

Chris there is no problem here, its your league and you should run it how you see fit. I must have missed somewhere that you were only counting wins. In most sport leagues ties are basically considered 1/2 a win.
I was just trying not to get any advantage out of not submitting. I just thought it would be better to take the loss and leave the ties for legitimate scores that are in fact ties.

Players are ranked by the following factors (in order):
-Number of wins
-Number of losses
-Total Score
So a tie only helps you in that it does not increase your number of losses. but at the same time, you gave ourself no chance of increasing your number of wins, so it also hurts you.
See?

Yes, I see perfectly. If the season ended today Cryomancer would not be in the playoffs because he has more losses than Cmosfm. Crymancer participated every week and is being penalized. I'm not trying to beat a dead horse, I just want it to be fair. And please don't take this as a knock either, I appreciate you for running this and do enjoy it.

Yeah, I'm having control problems in Questor as well. The < > keys on the keyboard work but not super well. Any ideas?

You are making the assumption that if Cmosfm had submitted scores instead of taking two ties, that he would have recieved losses for the scores. Had he won one or both games, he would still be in the playoffs and Cryomancer would be out. The probability would be that Cmosfm would have split with his opponent, and would therefore have one more win than cryomancer.
Look, all I am saying is that you guys can't have your cake and eat it too. If you want me to be completely fair, then you guys are going to feel like you are getting screwed when you accidentally forget to submit scores or have to go on vacation or have computer problems or whatever.
I simply can't make everyone happy. I stand by my opinion that the way I am doing things works the best. If when the season is over, you missed the playoffs because of something like this, you can either blame me and my faulty scheduling and scoring techniques, or you can ask youself if you could have tried a little harder on one or two games and picked up a couple of more wins.

I'm back in Seattle! Once again I've been travelling all week. Yeah I know I travel a lot. (I was in North Carolina for over a week and a half for a wedding)... and for the past few days haven't had access to any mame whatsoever.
I got in at 1am last night... so once I get off work today, I'll submit my scores for last weeks games and I haven't looked at any results so I'll can submit them blindly. It's up to you guys if it'll be accepted or not. I'm fine either way (I'll take my losses) ;) I just wanted to say I'm still ALL IN this thing. :D
